The fire originally started off Highway 395 at around 3:49 p.m. and quickly burned east fueled by high temperatures and the afternoon winds. By 6 o’clock Monday morning it had consumed an
estimated 4,389 acres and containment efforts had reached 45 percent.
Evacuation orders were given just before 7 p.m. on Sunday for around 50 residences on County Road 64 (Jess Valley Road), including those east of West Valley cut off, Juniper Acres, as well as residents in the Mill Creek Falls campground and Soup Springs campground
areas. The West Valley boating access sites were also closed to the public, as fire suppression aircraft are utilizing water from the reservoir. Fortunately, no structures have been reported damaged or involved in the fire at this time.
A team of 200 personnel is currently working on containment operations using dozers and the
natural rocky landscape to construct fire lines, aiming to halt the fire’s advance. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with updates provided regularly as the situation develops.
“Our crews are making great progress getting containment on this fire”, said Jeff Fontana, the BLM Northern California
Despite heightened concerns from citizens regarding fireworks over the past week, the Alturas Fire Department responded to only one fire-related call within the community.
A fire occurred in an alley behind Maple St. The Alturas Fire Department was unable to confirm what the cause of the fire in our community started
although neighbors believe it was due to fireworks. The homeowner of the residence was in the hospital at the time of the fire unable to access the home and belongings but luckily a loved one was able to get over to the fire and gather his animals. Fire Marshal, Eric Hunter is still investigating the damage and does not have an update at this time.
Leading up to the holiday and the events that followed, multiple residents expressed apprehension about potential fire risks associated with fireworks displays. The minimal incidents reported by the Alturas Fire Department demonstrates the success of proactive safety measures and community awareness initiatives. As
Modoc County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two individuals early Sunday morning after a traffic stop for expired registration that led to the discovery of drugs, driver with felony warrant and a stolen vehicle. At approximately 4:40 a.m. on July 7, deputies stopped a vehicle in the City of Alturas and identified the driver as Arthur Craig Valenzuela, 63, of Van Nuys, California. Valenzuela had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Los Angeles County for violating the terms and conditions of his Post Release Community Supervision. According to the District
Attorney’s Office, Valenzuela has been unable to be found since 2021 making his arrest a big accomplishment for our Sheriff’s Office.
Alicia Marie Messoria, 48, of Cedarville, California, a passenger in the vehicle, was found in possession of approximately 2 ounces of methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed the vehicle had a fraudulent license plate and the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Both Valenzuela and Messoria were arrested and booked into the Modoc County Jail. Valenzuela was booked for possession of a stolen
vehicle, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and on his warrant for violation of his Post Release Community Supervision terms and conditions. Valenzuela is being held on $110,000 bail. Messoria was charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, transporting a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She is being held on $26,000 bail. Valenzuela and Messoria are expected to be arraigned on their charges Tuesday.
temperatures continue to rise residents are encouraged to prioritize safety and cooperation to maintain a resilient and secure community environment.
Alturas Rural Fire Department had been contacted multiple times for comment but were unable to get a hold of at this time.
District’s Public Affairs Officer. “We are asking the public to please be careful anytime you’re doing anything outdoors. Yard work, driving or camping for example. Be aware, don’t park over dry grass or brush. Fire safety has to be top of mind, especially in this heat.”
Evacuation orders were lifted at 8 p.m. Monday evening however, West
Valley Road will remain closed at this time. As of 7 o’clock Tuesday morning, containment efforts have increased to 50 percent and the Modoc County Sheriff’s office is urging the public to please slow down and take caution, as there is still increased traffic from fire personnel.
Dear Editor,
At the risk of breaking my own arm patting myself on my own back, all of my friends know that I have always championed the downtrodden, the exploited, the abused. To possess an altruistic compassionate soul has zilch to do with whether one is a liberal Dem or a conservative Republican. It has nothing to do with one’s ethnicity or gender or education or socioeconomic status. More than anything it has to do with how one is raised and one’s DNA. Though I was a liberal Dem in my youth who evolved into the non-aligned, freethinking, independent true Jeffersonian Libertarian I am today who loves the Second Amendment, I have never lost my compassion for
those who are incapable or fearful of standing up for themselves. My friends all know I have never been fearful of standing up to the exploiters and the oppressors. Do not tread on me, y’all, get it? So it is that I must call out the politicians of Modoc County for not providing that sweet gal at the Lookout dump with an AC unit. As we all know, when it’s cold it’s easy to bundle up against the cold, but when it is oppressively hot as it is right now, there’s no escaping the heat unless one has AC or a swimming pool. You cannot escape the sweltering heat even if you strip all your clothes off.
That gal at the Lookout dump was hospitalized last year during a heat wave after a day spent in the dump’s shed.
With local temperatures reaching and exceeding 100 F right now that gal is at risk of another medical incident. The County needs to provide a small gasoline (maybe even solar powered) generator for her and a small AC unit so she can stay safely cool. I mean, really, when one of Modoc’s supervisors can get her gravel road treated with lignin at the County’s taxpayers’ expense to cut down on dust, certainly the County can afford a small generator and AC unit for the gal at the Lookout dump.
Step up, Modoc County, and do the ethical right thing.

As temperatures rise and the sun blazes down, staying hydrated becomes more crucial than ever.
This last weekend many cases of heat stroke and dehydration are on the rise. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues, especially during dangerous hot weather. Whether you’re working outside, exercising, or just trying to stay cool,
here are essential tips to keep you hydrated and safe. Water is vital for maintaining body temperature, lubricating joints and transporting nutrients. In hot weather, your body loses water more rapidly through sweat. If this lost fluid is not replenished, dehydration can set in, leading to heat-related illnesses like
heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Knowing the signs of dehydration can help you take action before it becomes severe. Common symptoms include thirst, dry mouth, dark yellow urine, fatigue, dizziness and confusion. As temperatures are now reaching over 100 degrees it’s important to prevent dehydration

or heat stroke before it occurs. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. In hot weather, increase this amount based on your activity level and how much you sweat. Having an insulated water bottle nearby is a great way to ensure you are staying cool and hydrated. Make sure to consume water rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, oranges and strawberries that have high water content and can contribute to your hydration needs. Try to avoid drinking caffeine and alcohol on extreme heat days. Both can dehydrate you. If you do consume these beverages, make sure to drink extra water to compensate. A good way to remember to hydrate is to set a reminder for yourself. If you often forget to drink water, set reminders on your phone or use hydration apps to keep track of your intake. If possible, avoid being outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When working or exercising outside, take regular breaks in shaded areas to cool down and drink water. If you’re sweating heavily, water alone might not be enough. Sports drinks or electrolyte tablets can help replenish lost salts and minerals. Children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are more susceptible to dehydration. Ensure they have access to plenty of fluids and are monitored closely during hot weather.
Just like humans, animals are also at risk during extreme heat. Pets, livestock and wildlife can suffer from dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here are some tips to keep animals safe: Provide ample water: Ensure that pets and livestock have access to clean, fresh water at all times. Refill their water bowls frequently and consider adding ice to keep it cool.
Create shady areas: Make sure animals have access to shaded areas where they can escape the direct sunlight. Use tarps, trees or shelters to provide shade. Limit exercise: Avoid exercising pets during the hottest parts of the day. Take them for walks early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Never leave animals in cars: Even with the

windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can quickly become deadly. Never leave pets in a parked vehicle. Watch for signs of heat stress: Symptoms of heat stress in animals include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, move the animal to a cooler area immediately and provide water. Contact our local veterinarian if the symptoms persist. It’s also to be aware when you take your animal for a walk or are outside how hot the ground may be for them
to walk on. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too hot for you to walk on, then your furry friend shouldn’t either. Staying hydrated in dangerous hot weather is not just about comfort; it’s about health and safety for both humans and animals. By following these tips, you can help prevent dehydration and protect yourself, your loved ones, and your pets from the dangers of extreme heat. When the temperature rises, your water intake should, too. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe.

Kathryn Paulette Velasco, known by her family and those close to her as Kathy, came into our world on February 19, 1947, and left our world on May 20, 2024. She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. She is the daughter of the late Birdie Alice Flowers and Joseph Kaylor. She is survived by her children Sheila, John, Kathileen, Michael, Misty, Valerie, Jimmy, and Paulette.
Kathy always longed to have a large family and that she did. It didn’t stop at her children though. She has many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well. Her door was open to anyone that needed a helping hand, and she gained extended family beyond what she could have dreamed. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Kathy was known as strong and fierce, but also as compassionate and gentle. She loved and protected her family with all she had and always, always put them first. She had an adventurous, fun and crazy 77 years on this Earth filled with a love that cannot be replaced. Her family will miss her dearly, but we know she
is watching over us from afar. And for all that knew Kathy, know that she wouldn’t want you to mourn her in death, but to celebrate her wonderful life that each of us had the honor of sharing with her. She will continue to live on through our memories. Kathy left letters for her children…a few last words of love and strength to help us get through after her passing. Always thinking of us, even after she is gone. The following is a letter I believe she would write to us all now.
“I just wanted to tell you; I finally made it here. I have heard about this place my whole life, but I must tell you, beautiful is an understatement. The views are absolutely stunning. The colors… unreal. I journeyed here alone but it doesn’t feel as such. So warm. So inviting. A reunion that was absolutely amazing. A feeling of comfort and complete fulfillment. I am truly at peace. I am home. And I have no reason to feel anything other than pure happiness. And love…for you. Know the tears you shed when you miss me are temporary. The pain…only temporary. For this home is yours too. I just got here ahead of you... that’s all. Nobody ever knows when it’s their time to be called home.
So, for now…you just have more living to do. Take in those sunsets. Breathe in the crisp Autumn air. Taste the salt of the ocean. Listen to the rain as you fall asleep. There is still joy to be had. Tuck me into your heart. Move forward with our memories. Take those steps and picture me cheering you on…and
smiling when you smile. I want nothing more than for you to smile. Keep taking those steps. Oh, I know they must be heavy some days, but with each step of each day, you get closer to my doorstep. And the reunion will be amazing when I am among the first to welcome you home.”
We will all be home with you again one day. We will continue to love and miss you until then. Thank you for all the wonderful years.

Sheri Patrice was born June 7, 1957 to Tom and Isoma (Lamb). She lived in Southern California except for a short time in Texas with her mom, step dad, brother Vince and sister Staci. Sheri graduated from Rim of the world High School in Lake Arrowhead, California and attended Chaffey College. Her favorite job was working the corkscrew ride at Knott’s Berry Farm. In the spring of 1985, Sheri met Brian, the garden center Manager at the strip mall where she cut hair. After finding out she had a cousin that had lived in Modoc and flirting through a 1 ½ hour haircut, Brian asked her out. They got married in September 1985, and moved to San Francisco Bay Area with her son Jason. There in 1988 daughter Jessica was born. The family moved to Alturas in 1991 where Sheri worked at Top Hat video store, Dawn’s paper clip, and helped Brian with their landscaping business. “Harden’s Gardens.” After Brian joined the post office Sheri became a full time volleyball/basketball mom. Family was always super important to Sheri. She loved the big family Christmas parties and visiting cousins in Utah, Las Vegas, and Southern California. After winning a battle with cancer Sheri got to fulfill a bucket list of swimming with dolphins in Cancun, Mexico. After a bunch of health issues and some more Carribean vacations, Sheri and Brian started a new chapter in life raising grandchildren: Zoey, Patrick, Autumn and Sophie. Brian became “Apa” and retired from the P.O. and Sheri became
“Ama” and a volleyball, football, wrestling mom. Sheri passed suddenly of cardiac arrest June 25th at the end of a family visit to Oregon to see granddaughter Madi. Sheri would be thrilled to know she got to be an eye donor, despite having cancer and chemo. She was always so proud of her eyes. There will be a celebration of Sheri’s life Sunday July 21st noon to 2:00 at the Alturas Elks Lodge.

Alturas’ Fandango Days Fourth of July celebration is looked forward to by many every year; and while this one was HOT, it was another great success! The Alturas Chamber of Commerce did a great job adjusting usual plans due to Dorris Park’s current renovations.
This year’s parade started about 10:30 a.m. with Modocers lined up and down Main Street ready to see all of the creativity, and maybe even catch some candy. Floats lined up on Glen Street, heading north on Main Street and turning onto W 8th Street to end at the Rotary Fields. There were around 30 parade entries in total, including this year’s chosen Grand Marshal, Maxine Madison. Each year a Grand Marshal is chosen either by the Chamber, or with the help of nominations from the community! “This year, Maxine was chosen because of her dedication to the community, and to Modoc County’’ said Dianna Bass, the Alturas Chamber’s Secretary/Director. “She spent 40 years as a Modoc County employee, with her last 24 years as the County Clerk”.
For the parade float competition there were 5 categories to enter, and 9 winners in total. The VFW Veterans and Family float was the overall Sweepstakes winner. In the Commercial category, C8 Custom Metal took 1st place and JavaDoc/Shipright took 2nd place. In the Car category, Dave Crenshaw took 1st place. In the Equestrian category, the Lake County Roundup Queen took 1st place and the Modoc County Queen Court took 2nd place. In the Youth category, the Modoc Youth Football float took 1st place. Finally, in the Civic/ Service category, the Alturas Elks Lodge took 1st place and the VFW Auxiliary took 2nd place.
This year’s after parade festivities took place at the Alturas Rotary Fields for the first time ever! While it was hot out there, it was another amazing turnout and the community responded well to the change of location. The Rotary Fields were lined up with the Classic Car and Motorcycle show, there was live music, a “Kids Corner” with games and water toys and just about 30 vendors in total. Everything from food vendors, small businesses sharing their goods, informational booths and more.
The Fandango Days celebration has been happening since 1963, allowing the community to come together to celebrate our independence, freedom and the big spirit of Modoc and the U.S.A.; it is one that is cherished and loved by many.
Many past Modocers came together this last week to train and teach local youth at a football camp held at Ed Carver Stadium. The camp, led by current football players and coaches, focused on mentoring young athletes and developing their skills.
Leaders of the camp expressed their gratitude for the dedication and turnout, highlighting the event’s potential as a foundational experience for future footballers.
MHS Principal Kristen Budmark states, “putting on any type of event is never easy, but camps are even more so. There are tons of moving pieces in the planning & implementation process that most people don’t even think about. That is just another reason I am so proud and honored to be a part of my MHS Family.
Nicole Addison went to Coach Valena with an idea to build bridges between our older and younger youth and our programs while making some money for our football program. Wyatt agreed and here we are. Nicole worked hard to facilitate and organize this event that gives our students the opportunity to give back
to our community and build some healthy bonds with younger kiddos. Our students are so caring and acting as mentors in this camp is just another example of them building and supporting our BRAVE culture and becoming the role models they are born to be. Thank you to our Nicole, Coach Valena & ALL of our MHS Football Staff, our MHS Football Players, participating campers, and our community members who trusted us with your children. I think a lot of good is being done here.”
Nicole Addison, organizer of the camp who is also SPED Instructional Assistant on the MHS campus tells families, “we have created this camp fundraiser in efforts to raise funds for our Football team, our hope with the camp is to give our mentorship through our experience in the sport as well as to physically and emotionally enrich the youth of our community by offering; physical conditioning, Fundamentals of all skill positions, offense and defense strategies, Game-like scenarios but most importantly responsibility,
accountability, sportsmanship, teamwork, the importance of education and respect not only for their team and coaches but also for the community that supports them. Our Football team has put a lot of work into where we stand not only in our sport but as well as how we represent our community, without our love for athletics and the support of our community our camp wouldn’t be possible. We hope that our efforts in this event help shape some of our younger community peers as we remember what it was like for ourselves to be younger, watching and looking up to the high school athletes. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Notice To Potential Bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate
the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information.
If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (877) 440-4460 or visit this Internet Website https://mkconsultantsinc. com/trustees-sales/, using the file number assigned to this case 2410880. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not
immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice To Tenant: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (877) 440-4460, or visit this internet website https://mkconsultantsinc. com/trustees- sales/, using the file number assigned to this case 24-10880 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Lassen County, the City of Susanville, and
Rancheria are working to update the 2019 Lassen County Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires that LHMPs be updated every five (5) years to receive Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants. The current Lassen County LHMP expired January 2024. The intent is to have a FEMAapproved and locally adopted LHMP by the end of 2024. The Lassen County Department of Planning and Building Services is taking the lead and is responsible for coordinating this effort. The current LHMP is available on the Planning and Building Services Department’s portion of the Lassen County website: https://www.lassencounty.org/ dept/planning-and-building-services/hazard-mitigation-plan-update What is Mitigation: Mitigation is defined as any action taken to reduce and/or eliminate impacts from hazards and threats. Mitigation can reduce the enormous cost and lengthy duration of disaster response and recovery by protecting citizens and critical facilities.
Hazard Mitigation Plan Purpose and Approach:
The purpose of a LHMP is to identify actions Lassen County, the City of Susanville, and the Susanville Indian Rancheria can take to reduce risk from hazards and threats. This is accomplished by facilitating a Planning Team through a comprehensive planning process to learn about the hazards and threats, understanding the current local capabilities, and then identify appropriate actions that can be implemented to reduce and/or eliminate risk.
Hazard Mitigation Planning Team Members: The Planning Team representatives include Lassen County, City of Susanville, the Susanville Indian Rancheria, LMUD, Janesville School District, CAL FIRE, Susanville Sanitary District, Bureau of Land Management, and the Lassen County Fire Safe Council. Other agency/organization representatives may be added if necessary based on information and/or project needs.
Hazard and Threats
The Planning Team has identified the following hazards and threats to be included in the updated LHMP: Agriculture Pests/Disease Infestation, Aircraft Accidents, Avalanche, Civil Disturbance, Cyber Security Threats, Dam/Reservoir Failure, Droughts/Water Shortage, Earthquake, Energy Shortage/Outage, Extreme Temperatures, Flood, Hazardous Materials Release, Infectious Disease, Landslide, Infrastructure Pipeline/Storage Hazards, Severe Weather/Storms, Terrorism, Volcano, and Wildfire.
Public Involvement Public comment is welcome throughout this process, and there will be specific opportunities for public comment as the update is prepared. Public meetings will be announced on the Lassen County website. At the end of the process, public hearings will be conducted by the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, Susanville City Council, and the Tribal Business Council of the Susanville Indian Rancheria to adopt the updated LHMP.
As part of this outreach effort, a public survey has been created to capture relevant public information. The public survey can be accessed by using the following QR Code:
