The N-C-O Railway historical society purchased the property in 2023 to save the last railway employee cottage on Main Street. The cottage was designed by renowned architect, Frederick DeLongchamps, the same architect who designed the Modoc County Courthouse. It was built by the N-C-O Railway in 1917 after selling their Reno facilities to the Western Pacific and moving their operations and headquarters to Alturas. Employee Cottage No. 2, as referenced on the blueprints, (photo) became home to the railway’s Traffic Manager, J. H. Mahan until the purchase of the N-C-O Railway by Southern Pacific in 1926.

Over the last few years, volunteers have worked to refinish the wood details, paint, wallpaper and

“The restoration of the cottage has provided local youth with more than just a space—it’s offered a connection to history, craftsmanship, and community roots. By preserving the historical character of the building, rather than replacing it with something modern and generic, we’ve created a meaningful environment where young people can gather, learn, and feel a part of something larger than themselves. Community Unites to Honor Deputy Jack Hopkins at Annual Memorial Run

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

The Modoc community came together this past weekend for the annual Deputy Jack Hopkins Memorial Run/ Walk, a heartfelt tribute to a beloved deputy whose service and sacrifice continue to inspire strength, connection, and remembrance.

Even as rain fell, spirits remained high. Law enforcement officers, family members, and residents joined side by side for the four-mile run along Highway 395, which was dedicated

The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties. Stories will highlight resilience, sacrifice and

Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post. “Though the years pass, this day never gets easier. We remember the good times, support one another, and ensure Jack is never forgotten.”

Veterans Day is not only about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the ongoing contributions of veterans in our neighborhoods, workplaces and families.

Community members are invited to help shape the guide. If you or someone you know has served, Modoc Media encourages you to submit a photo, name and years of service.

The guide aims to provide both inspiration and practical resources, ensuring local stories of courage and commitment are remembered and celebrated.

Comments Looking Back

Dear Editor:

I hope everyone is paying attention to the proposed Congressional district map for Modoc. We are lumped in with the North Coast all the way down to San Francisco. Republicans have no chance at representation.

It’s my understanding that those states intending to redraw district maps mid-decade are doing so because millions of illegal migrants were counted in the 2020 census, giving an unfair advantage to Democrats. Prop 50 is a bad idea and should be defeated.

Thank you,

Vaudine Cullins Alturas, CA 96101

Dear Editor,

My wife and I got back Wednesday night from 5 days away down to Sonoma County where she grew up. It was my birthday week so we stayed near Bodega Bay. We are not standoffish people, we are engaging and gregarious. We probably spoke with 100 people down there and only one out of dozens knew where Modoc County is, and that was a State Parks ranger. He said we live in a gorgeous part of California. Not one other person had a clue where Modoc County is, and we love that fact except when it comes to redistricting our state. The idea that Modoc County might be subject to millions of Californians who haven’t a clue where Modoc County is, well, that’s frightening when it comes to state politics. We don’t want their insanity and ignorance dictating to us.

Dear Editor,

Jeff Middlebrook

My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The thought of being at the mercy of the far-left coastal population is way beyond unacceptable. Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey

folk who have no idea of the challenges and problems and issues of ranchers, farmers, loggers, and so on. I bet that if a survey was done on the coast that asked where their food comes from they’d think that their food grows on the shelves of grocery stores. If that same hypothetical survey asked coastal folk where the lumber comes from to build their houses they would not be able to answer that question.

Some Modoc County folk were born-and-raised here so they had no choice in finding themselves here, but some of us came here from coastal urban areas and we came here to get away from all that madness. My wife and I are not clueless former coastal folk, and we cherish the unique character and issues

Spectrum Expands Fiber Broadband Network in Modoc County

Modoc County is getting a major digital boost. Spectrum announced the expansion of its state-of-the-art fiber broadband network across Modoc County, connecting more than 2,300 additional homes and businesses in Alturas and surrounding communities to high-speed internet, mobile, TV, and voice services.

At a celebration event held Wednesday afternoon at the historic Niles Hotel in downtown Alturas, local leaders joined Spectrum representatives to mark the milestone. The initiative demonstrates Spectrum’s ongoing commitment to closing the digital divide in rural California, giving more residents and small businesses access to the fast, reliable connectivity needed for education, work, healthcare, and commerce.

Spectrum leadership highlighted that this expansion is part of the company’s broader rural broadband initiative, aimed at serving historically

underserved and remote areas.

In addition to improved internet access, Spectrum announced a community donation to T.E.A.C.H. (Training, Employment and Community Help, Inc.), a respected Modoc County nonprofit organization dedicated to workforce development and community support. The contribution

will help T.E.A.C.H. continue providing essential programs and resources for local residents.

With fiber broadband now extending deeper into Modoc County, residents can look forward to possible faster speeds, greater reliability, and expanded digital resources — paving the way for stronger communities and a more connected future.

John’s early years were spent in the rugged mining camps of Sulphur and Winnemucca, where he developed the resilience

During her time in Modoc County from 1993 to 1999, Uyttenhove developed a deep love for the region’s natural beauty and rich history. As she learned about the Lava Beds and the story of Captain

Jack, she felt a profound connection to both the land and its people.

In Letters to Captain Jack, Uyttenhove shares a series of reflective letters written to the historical Modoc leader. Through questions, observations, and updates about the land and its changes over time, she explores themes of belonging, displacement, and care—for the land, for others, and for oneself.

Modoc Varsity Lady Braves Dominate on Senior Night Against Fall River

The Modoc Braves made quick work of Fall River on Tuesday night, earning a 3-0 sweep in a match that concluded after press time.

The win marked a bit of payback for Modoc (1211-2), which fell to the Bulldogs in five sets earlier this season. The Braves controlled the rematch from start to finish, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-13.

Before the match, Modoc honored its senior players and their families:

Allie Weber , with parents Gerese and Kyle Weber

Katie Erquiaga , with Jim Erquiaga and Erin Sandage

Jordyn Sandage , with father Tom Sandage Aubree Knighton , with parents Jacee and Duane Knighton

Eliza Pena , with mother Cynthia Pena

Katie Erquiaga led the way for Modoc with nine kills, while Allie Weber tallied 17 assists. Aaliyah Sevilla added three aces to fuel the Braves’ offense.

The victory continued a strong stretch for Modoc, which has now won three of its last four matches.

Modoc will travel to face Trinity at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Braves Crush Weed 64-14 in Homecoming Rout

After a week of community service, the Modoc Braves capped off Homecoming night with a statement victory, overwhelming the Weed Cougars 64-14 in one of their most dominant performances of the season. The win marked a season-high score for the Braves, who showed no signs of slowing down as they surged to a 3-4 record.

From the opening kickoff, Modoc came out with a vengeance, executing on both sides of the ball with confidence and precision. The Braves lit up the scoreboard early and left no doubt who ruled the field Friday night. The crowd roared as Modoc’s offense unleashed a relentless attack, while the defense shut down the Cougars’ advances.

Head Coach David Toaetolu spoke of the Braves determination to keeping momentum throughout every quarter.

“Friday’s game was all about showcasing their grit, firepower, and hunger for

success. ” Toaetolu said. “The Braves didn’t just win—they dominated every phase of the game with precision and passion.”

The victory extended Modoc’s home winning streak to six consecutive games, a run dating back to last season. On their home field, the Braves have become a powerhouse, fueled by community pride and the unwavering support of local fans.

Toaetolu praised this year’s team by saying, “Modoc is more than a team—they’re a force, and the season is theirs to claim.”

The team also extended thanks to Holiday Market and Coach Noury for sponsoring the JV and varsity team dinner last Thursday night. With confidence and momentum on their side, the Braves now turn their attention to their next challenge. Modoc will travel to Mt. Shasta to face the Grizzlies on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Modoc Medical Center Receives Interim Licensure for Hospital Addition

Modoc Medical Center

(MMC) is pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has granted interim licensure for its new hospital addition, marking another major milestone in MMC’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to highquality healthcare in the community.

The newly licensed addition includes two semi-private inpatient rooms, providing four additional hospital beds to serve patients locally and enhance inpatient capacity. These beds will also strengthen MMC’s ability to serve more patients through its federally approved Swing Bed Program, which provides skilled, transitional care for individuals recovering after hospitalization.

“Our expansion reflects our commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community,” said Kevin Kramer, Chief Executive Officer of Modoc Medical Center. “By adding new inpatient rooms and expanding our infusion and swing bed services, we’re ensuring that more patients can heal and recover close to home with the care and compassion they deserve.”

About the Swing Bed Program

MMC’s Swing Bed Program offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach for patients transitioning from a hospital stay to home. After hospitalization, some

patients require additional therapy, support, or medical treatments to continue healing. The duration of stay depends on each patient’s individualized treatment plan and goals. Patients in the Swing Bed Program receive 24/7 physician oversight, access to in-house emergency services, on-site laboratory and imaging services, physical therapy, and pharmacist and dietitian consultations. The program’s goal is to provide each patient with the best opportunity to make a successful transition from hospital to home.

For more information about MMC’s Swing Bed Program, contact Christine Nelson-Fults, Discharge Planning Coordinator, at (530) 708-8889 or cnelson@ modocmedicalcenter.org.

About the Infusion Department

The addition also features MMC’s new Infusion Department, which brings specialized, therapeutic

treatments closer to home for patients throughout Modoc County. The department includes four treatment bays and offers a range of outpatient infusion therapies, allowing patients to receive care without facing travel-related burdens. Infusions are administered by qualified staff experienced in numerous types of intravenous therapies. Outpatient treatments available at Modoc Medical Center include: IV and injectable antibiotics, blood transfusions and other blood components, auto-immune disorder medications, and outpatient injections. MMC’s infusion team also provides care for patients with established PICC lines and port-a-caths. Infusion services are available Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Linda Sawyer at (530) 640-1811.

While the hospital’s addition is now licensed and operational, MMC is still awaiting CDPH licensure for Mountain View Skilled Nursing Facility. A site inspection is scheduled for November 4, 2025, with a timeline for opening to be determined after that date. MMC will notify the public as soon as this timeline is established.

TRUSTEE’S SALE

T.S. No.: 2025-15755CA APN: 024-450-018-

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED PLAN: The current Administrative Plan must be updated in accordance with Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act (HOTMA) and National Standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate (NSPIRE). HOTMA made significant changes to the statutes that govern U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs, including the authorizing statutes for the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) and Project Based Voucher (PBV) programs found in Section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937 (42 U.S.C. 1437f). HUD implemented several of HOTMA’s HCV and PBV provisions through Federal Register notices issued in 2016 and 2017. On May 11, 2023, HUD published the final rule “Economic Growth Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act: Implementation of National Standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate” (88 FR 30442) to align expectations of housing quality and consolidate inspection standards across HUD programs. This final rule establishes a new approach to defining and

assessing housing quality: NSPIRE. This rule is part of a broad revision of the way HUD-assisted housing is inspected and evaluated. The purpose of NSPIRE is to strengthen HUD’s physical condition standards and improve HUD oversight through the alignment and consolidation of the inspection regulations used to evaluate HUD housing across multiple programs. This final rule also incorporates provisions of the Economic Growth and Recovery, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act that will reduce administrative burden on small rural public housing authorities. The Administrative Plan is available for review at the Housing Authority office, 2600 Park Marina Drive Redding, CA., Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. It may also be accessed online at https://www.shastacounty. gov/housing-communityactionprograms/page/ shasta-county-housingauthority-administrativeplan or by scheduling an appointment with Melissa Nave at (530) 225-5160.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
