YouTuber BitWit Donates High-End Computers to Modoc High School, Empowering Students in Video Production and Mechanical Form Classes
Modoc High School
received a generous donation of two stateof-the-art computers on July 24, 2025, from Kyle Hansen—known as BitWit on YouTube— and his sponsors. The donation, presented to teacher Mr. Marcussen and his students, will enhance the school’s Video Production and Mechanical Form classes by providing advanced technology to support their creative and technical projects.
About a month ago, Kyle posted a video on his YouTube channel asking if anyone in rural communities needed upgraded computer hardware. Mr. Marcussen responded, expecting no reply but felt it was worth a try. Kyle answered the call, visiting Modoc High School to personally deliver the computers and film a YouTube video featuring the students, set to be released soon on his BitWit channel.
During the unveiling, Kyle presented the class with a high-end prebuilt computer ideal for their classroom needs.
In a surprise reveal, he then gifted a second computer: a top-of-theline PC equipped with the most powerful video card and processor combination available today—specifically for Mr. Marcussen to elevate his teaching capabilities. Both computers were donated free of charge, made possible by Kyle’s sponsors, hardware manufacturers, and
industry partners.
Principal Kristen Budmark praised the donation, saying,
“This gift is more than technology—it’s a reminder that even in our small corner of the world, our students’ creativity and dreams deserve the very best tools to bring them to life. Kyle Hansen and his sponsors have given our kids a glimpse of what’s
possible when passion meets generosity.”
She also acknowledged the crucial role of the teacher who made it happen:
“A special thank you to Mr. Marcussen for believing in what’s possible and reaching out on behalf of our students. His initiative is the reason this gift found its
WHAT’S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN????
Modoc Performing Arts Theater is presenting our 13th Annual Children’s Musical Theater Camp production of What’s The Worst That Can Happen written in 2020 by 18 MPAT campers in a virtual Zoom environment due to the constrictions of COVID.
Dan Roeder utilized his talents to direct and edit this production as they wrote their own roles, developed their characters, wrote song verses and choruses, and developed scenes and a comedic plot with unexpected twists and heart-warming resolutions. Five more campers joined to produce a film version of the musical utilizing green screen shots and using a WURRLYedu service to record the music. All of the Covid restrictions were followed and the film was made. 5 years later we are able to present the original play as it was intended-for a live audience. Our story finds an unlikely group of adventurers, fantasy creatures and villains all meeting on a magical island where their stories intertwine in irreversible ways. There is trouble on the island as the trees are turning evil and start stirring up trouble. All of the characters must decide what is the right
way to proceed in each of their quests. This original musical features 5 original songs. (Writing and producing a play in 3 weeks: What’s The Worst That Can Happen?) Big Changes Coming Next Week at the Modoc County Record
Hello from your Modoc County Record team!
comments Big Weekend Ahead in Surprise Valley: Art,
We’re proud to share that subscriptions—both in print and digital—have grown steadily over the past year. This tells us that our community continues to value local news and the role it plays in keeping everyone connected. But we also know that not everyone can or wants to subscribe, and that’s why our decision to make the paper free to pick up starting next week matters so much. Local news should be accessible to everyone, and this change ensures that every member of our community can easily get the paper each week.
Free Paper for All—Delivery Still an Option
While you’ll soon be able to pick up the paper for free at any of our distribution points, we understand that many readers appreciate the convenience of home delivery via USPS
To continue offering this service, we must align the cost of home delivery with what it truly takes to provide it.
Beginning July 2025, home delivery will be priced at $2 per issue, or $104 per year. This ensures that we can cover the rising costs of postage and the labor involved in preparing papers for mailing—our team begins work as early as 6:00 a.m. each Thursday to get everything processed and into the postal system.
Important reminder: If you subscribed or renewed your plan any time through June 2025, your current rate and subscription plan will remain fully honored for the remainder of your term. The new pricing applies only to new and renewing subscribers going forward.
ModocRecord.com: Even More News, Anytime
Our website, ModocRecord.com, continues to be a major part of how we serve the community and the wider region.
We’re now reaching 10,000 visitors per month, generating more than 60,000 page views! For only $25 per year, you can get unlimited access to all of our digital content— which includes everything in the newspaper and more. Subscribers get breaking news, extra photos, and expanded coverage you won’t find anywhere else. If you enjoy reading the Modoc County Record each week, we strongly encourage you to subscribe online as well. It’s a simple and affordable way to stay connected to the stories that matter most.
More Value: 3 New Games Every Week!
We’re also excited to add even more fun and engagement to your weekly paper! Starting next week, each issue will feature three new games every week: A crossword puzzle • A sudoku
And a word search
We know how much our readers enjoy interactive features, and we’re thrilled to add this extra value for everyone— whether you pick up the paper for free or receive it by mail.
A New, Easier-to-Read Format
Another change you’ll notice starting next week: the Modoc County Record will shift from a traditional broadsheet format to a modern tabloid size
This new size will be:
Easier to hold and read
Simpler to pick up and take with you
Better suited to how our readers enjoy the paper
We believe this will make the paper even more enjoyable while maintaining all the high-quality content you count on.
Expanding into Lassen County—Becoming a True Regional News Outlet
We’re also proud to announce that distribution will expand into Lassen County. There is a significant gap in true print and digital news outlets serving Northeast California, and we are committed to filling that role.
Our digital analytics confirm that we are now a regional news outlet, reaching over 100,000 people per month across all platforms combined. This milestone puts the Modoc County Record firmly in the conversation as a trusted local and regional news leader.
Why It Matters
Our mission is simple: to keep everyone in our community and region informed. By removing barriers to access through free pick-up, while maintaining the option of home delivery for those who value it, we are ensuring that local news remains strong and available to all.
Thank you for reading, subscribing, sharing, and supporting us. We are excited about the future and grateful for the trust you place in us each week.
Warm regards,
The Modoc County Record Team
Letters to the editor
Dear Editor,
Hospitals At Risk of Closing
Cuts to Medicaid were signed into law, and because less funds in Medicaid mean less funds for hospitals, we all, regardless of our insurance, will feel the effects of this.
`The Sheps Center for Health Services recently identified 338 at-risk hospitals that either are in the top 10% of Medicaid providers, or have experienced three consecutive years in the negative, and face risk of closing. Throughout California’s 52 congressional districts, 28 hospitals have been identified. 6 of those are in La Malfa’s district for top Medicaid providers: Oroville Hospital, Orchard Hospital (previously BiggsGridley Memorial Hospital), Modoc Medical Center, St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff, Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, and Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka.
The New York Times reported in February that California District 1, LaMalfa’s district, has 42% of its population covered by Medicaid, much higher than the national average of 23%, and ranks 31st in Medicaid enrollment out of the 435 districts. When you only feature districts that are Republican-strongholds, it’s the 4th highest in the nation in Medicaid enrollment.
These cuts to Medicaid do not go into effect until after the midterms, so Republicans like LaMalfa won’t have to answer for their constituents’ loss of healthcare access before receiving their votes again. This is an area that has supported and trusted LaMalfa for seven election cycles to protect their interests. Does cutting Medicaid in a district with 42% enrollment and the highest share of at-risk hospitals per California district sound like a congressman with your best interests at heart?
Thank you for your consideration,
Kayla Lewis Yuba City, CA

John William Ford
John William Ford was born on February 12,1946 in Emmett, Idaho, to Roy and Mary Ford. He was the second of four boys and two girls. His family moved to Alturas later in 1946 when he was six months old. Following his graduation from Modoc High School he went to Shasta College for a year before he joined the army and was sent to Vietnam. After discharge in 1969, he went back home to Alturas and continued his relationship with the US Forest Service, working as a crew chief on a survey crew.
In 1969, he married the love of his life, Charlotte McDowell and used his G.I. Bill to go to college, graduating from Chico State in 1973 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was offered a full-time position with the Forest Service and returned to Alturas. An oft-related family story was that his first day at work coincided with his graduation ceremony. He chose to skip the ceremony as he was excited to start his new life in his hometown.
In 1973, Charlotte and John’s son, John Ford Jr., was born, followed by a daughter, Katina, in 1977 and another daughter, Tiffany, in 1985. John served the public at the Forest Service for over forty years, ending his career as the head of road maintenance for the Modoc National Forest. After two months of retirement, John was restless, so he worked for the Herald and News delivering newspapers, working for them until his youngest daughter, Tiffany, moved back to Alturas. John switched
jobs, working at Best Western and ending up at the Super 8 Motel, where he could again enjoy working with people. During this time, Charlotte and John became grandparents: Ava and Ari to Katina and Ella, Karah, and Bailey to Tiffany. John loved his grandchildren, taking them out to ice cream and bringing cookies in to share with their preschool class.
John was an enthusiastic supporter of local sports his entire life, being on the track team in high school as well as playing on Modoc High School’s baseball, basketball, and football teams. He enjoyed playing on a recreational basketball team and going to local sporting events. John loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter before replacing his rifle with a camera and switching to his hobby of photography. He loved reading and always had a book within reach. He loved sitting in his car for hours reading and people in the community knew when John was parked, he would be deep in a western. John Ford passed away on January 7, 2025, in Alturas. He will be remembered for his kind and giving nature, his love for his family and community, visiting his mother-inlaw Edna Mcdowell at home and Warnerview, and always being willing to help someone in need. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Roy Ford, his sister, Janet Ford, and his brothers Ken, David, and Jim Ford, his mother-in-law, Edna Mcdowell, and his father-in-law Percy
Mcdowell. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, his three children and their spouses (John Ford Jr. and Maggie Eirenschmalz, Katina and Andrew Martin, and Tiffany Ford-Banks and Nick Banks five grandchildren (Ava and Ari Martin, Ella and Karah Battram, and Bailey Banks), Sister Barbara Aristo (Don), Brother-in-laws Eddie Hill (Marilyn), Danny Hill (Betty), Sister-inlaws Carlyn Harrington (Bill), Barbara Ford (Jim), multiple nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews,
longtime friends Melody and Russ Davis and so many more friends in the community that were such an important part of John’s life. John loved all his family, extended family and friends very much. He will greatly be missed by all. His services will be held on August 9 at 11 a.m. at Alturas Cemetery followed by a reception at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you would like to bring a potluck item, please feel free to bring your favorite dish.
Dorothy Fay (Hays) Campbell
Our heavenly Father has called his angel home. Dorothy Fay (Hays) Campbell passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on July 21, 2025. Dorothy was born on August 4, 1931, in McCloud, California to Lewis and Edna “Ruth” Hays. She was an only child and spent her schooling years in Mt. Shasta, Adin and attended St Helen’s Hall in Portland, OR. She attended San Francisco College for Women and then St. Luke’s Hospital for Nursing, and she then worked at St. Luke’s for ten years as a nurse. She married Richard Campbell in San Francisco on August 10, 1955. They had three children, Deborah, Jeanette and Edward, while living in San Francisco.
In 1968 they decided that rural life would be a better place to raise their children, so they moved their family to Adin, California. There they joined her parents in running the family business of Adin Supply, a general store. They became very involved in the community and Dorothy still enjoyed participating in as many local events as possible. After selling the store
in 2004, she and her husband enjoyed going on new adventures with friends and family, including cruises, bus tours and camping trips.
Age seems to get the best of us, and it was no different for Dorothy. With the advent of some minor health issues, she moved into her daughter Jeanette’s home in Redding full-time, where she enjoyed visits from family and friends, short trips for family and Big Valley events. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard Campbell. She is survived by her children Debbie (Ron) Rynearson, of Sacramento; Jeanette (Jim) Holcomb of Redding; Edward (Sasha) Campbell of Susanville; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Dorothy was a blessing in the lives of so many, always positive and never stopping to be an inspiration to others. We are thankful for the 94 years she had here on earth, the many years she was in each of our lives and the joy we have knowing that Jesus welcomed her home with open arms. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August
24th, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at the Adin Community Hall, with a reception to follow. A main entre will be provided and those attending are welcome to bring a salad, side dish or dessert if they wish. Memorial donations can be made to: Oregon

LaMalfa
A suspicious package left outside U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa’s Chico office Thursday led to an evacuation of nearby businesses and a major emergency response.
The package was found outside the Philadelphia Square office complex on Independence Circle just after 1 p.m. Police, firefighters, hazmat crews, bomb squad members and the FBI arrived to check it out. After examining the package, officials said it contained soiled diapers and the white powder seen at the scene was just sugar.
LaMalfa said in a

NOTICE TO TENANT:
You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able
to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer”
or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. “Oil & Water” by Jan Tandy: Studio 540 Showcases
Local Legacy in Dual Mediums, August 1–September 1
Studio 540, Modoc County’s premier contemporary art gallery, will host” Oil & Water” by Jan Tandy from Aug1 to Sept 1. There will be a public opening on Aug.1 from 5:30 to 8 pm, coinciding with Cedarville’s First Friday monthly summer festival.
Gallery hours: Friday – Monday 1-4 PM or by appointment: call Nick, 415 350-0994.
Jan Tandy also known as Jan Bittle or Jan Walthers has been a longtime California artist with ties to the Sacramento valley and Surprise Valley. Growing up living on a farm in Madison CA, and her mother being a long time resident of Eagleville, has given her inspiration one can see in her work.
Jan chose art as her vocation under her father’s begrudgment. Her father agreed under the condition she attended a commercial art school. She was shipped off to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena,CA, where she majored in advertising and package design. She left school and worked briefly in Detroit for General Motors Styling and then for Chrysler Graphics Arts.
Jan has vivid memories of placing the new Chrysler Pentastar logo in various advertising scenarios.

in a man’s dominant field at the time, she moved back west and landed in Oregon in the Eugene area. Jan for many years taught adults and children privately, adult education and community art classes for Lane Junior College in her home studio. She also had stints working in graphic arts at Lane Council of Government in the maps and graphic department. Jan made a lifestyle change and moved to Cedarville in 1995 where she lives and paints currently.
In this show at Studio 540 there are two distinctive styles that are unique to Jan and they are reflected in her two favorite mediums of watercolor and the other oil.
Jan’s proficiency in water color stems from her advertising background where it was a widely used medium in the 1960’s as color photography and printing became an industry standard. Her subject matter reflects her roots of California valley scenes of water fowl and simplicity of farm life. Her artistic influences often come from her Oregon friendships with painters Tom Browning and Don Prechtel. Nature and being alone are often depicted in a delicious stoppage of time in Americana. She deviates from them, allowing the alchemy of water color to create a
linked to the same contamination concern. The ham salads were shipped to food service and retail locations in the same region. No illnesses have been confirmed. Both warnings were issued as a precaution.
The affected products include 12-ounce tubs of Reser’s Fine Foods Ham Salad with a sellby date of September 1, 2025, and 5-pound tubs of Molly’s Kitchen Ham Salad with a sell-by date of August 31, 2025. The recalled tuna salad items have sell-by or sell-thru dates between July 16 and July 19, 2025, and were distributed under various labels.
Although these products were not initially sold in California, food safety officials note that regional foods can enter other markets through redistribution, especially near the end of their shelf life. Because the ham salad alert is not a recall, some items may still be in circulation. Consumers are advised to check packaging, avoid eating any matching products, and clean surfaces the food may have touched. Symptoms of listeria
unique atmosphere . Jan’s other distinctive style is oil medium used extensively when she moved to Cedarville. The expansive views of Surprise Valley lent itself to a newly found attention to detail. Painstaking details create a realism that feels like you’re alone staring off in your own thoughts. One is overtaken by these panoramic landscapes allowing a feeling of discovery. Jan’s use of color deviates from realism making the views cinematic. Where am I, where am I going, all feelings of discovery, perhaps being a cowboy and enduring it with love.
Jan Tandy’s work is a
local treasure. Anyone who finds themselves immersed in themselves while leaning on a fence post or sitting in a clump of grass will recognize the strength and beauty of her work….
