Have a fantastic LABOR DAY WEEKEND

The Modoc County

Honoring The Heart of America: Celebrating Labor Day

Labor Day is more than just a long weekend or the unofficial end of summer, it’s a day to honor the dedication, strength, and resilience of the American workforce.

From the construction crews building our cities to the healthcare workers caring for our loved ones, every laborer

contributes to the fabric of our nation. This holiday reminds us to pause and appreciate the progress we’ve made, not just in our individual careers but as a society. The eight-hour workday, safe working conditions, and fair wages are victories born from the efforts of past

generations who fought tirelessly for workers’ rights.

As communities gather with family and friends, fire up their grill, or take that last summer dip in the lake, let’s remember the true essence of Labor Day: a celebration of the hard work that drives communities like Modoc forward. It also happens to be one of the most dangerous holiday weekends when it comes to drunk driving in the United States. According to TrafficSafetyMarketing. gov’s Labor Day Stats, “during the 2022 Labor Day holiday, there were 490 crash fatalities

Fire near Upper Cal Pines leading to An Arrest

A man has been arrested in Upper Cal Pines in connection to fires that took place over a week ago. The suspect, taken into custody in Sutter Creek, faces several charges, including taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, receiving known stolen property, allowing a fire to escape, burning without a permit, failing to prevent a fire from spreading, and unauthorized nonagricultural burning. He is currently being held on $37,000 bail. Local citizens of Modoc County reported on Facebook that stolen items, taken in previous thefts, were found at the site of one of the fires but unfortunately perished in the fire. Thankfully

the owner of the stolen vehicle was able to obtain it before it was further damaged from the fire.

Citizens in the area praised the emergency personnel for their quick response time and how effectively they were able to extinguish the fire. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

nationwide. Of these 490 traffic crash fatalities, 39% involved a drunk driver, and 25% involved drivers who were driving with a BAC almost twice the legal limit”. This statistic highlights the serious risk that drunk driving poses during the holiday, and serves as a reminder to prioritize safety not only for yourself, but for everyone else on the roads as well.

So, here’s to the men and women who keep our world turning. Happy Labor Day Modocers, and please remember to celebrate safely!

Tragic Accident Claims Two Lives, Injures One Near Klamath Falls

Three residents from Alturas were involved in a fatal collision while traveling North to Klamath Falls, OR earlier this week. The driver reportedly slumped over the wheel all of a sudden, accelerating on the gas and causing the vehicle to veer off the road into

a tree. Sadly, both the driver and backseat passenger lost their lives in the accident. The third passenger in the involved vehicle sustained multiple injuries but survived the accident and is currently in the hospital receiving medical attention.

Names of the involved

will not be released until all families have been notified. This devastating incident has deeply affected the Alturas community, and thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved as they navigate this difficult time.

Obsidian Mines Collection Closes for the Season

September 2 on the Modoc NF

Calling all rockhounds!

The Modoc National Forest announces the obsidian mines Season closure. As the 2024 season draws to a close, the obsidian mines will shut down on Labor Day, September 2. Permit holders have had the pleasure of exploring this natural wonder since June 24, and we are thrilled about the nearly 500 permits issued this

year, compared to just over 800 last year. Let’s savor the remaining time of this season and anticipate an even more spectacular 2025 season, where we can once again immerse ourselves in the stunning obsidian from the North Warner Mountains. Keep treasuring and respecting this unique natural resource!

The Emotions And Catharsis Of Telling Our Tales

Joan, far right, with her nanny, in 1938.

Not unlike a plumber unclogging a stuffed pipe, recalling our past and telling or writing our stories can release a floodgate of emotions that have long been blocked within us. As a professional biographer/ personal historian, I have witnessed how summoning the details of our lives from our memory banks, or even learning missing

information about our own or our forefathers’ and foremothers’ life stories, can bring us both joy and pain.

One biography client was Joan, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor who hired me to capture and preserve her life story. During a discussion, she mentioned to me how during her childhood in Prague, the family’s beloved live-in nanny, Ida, one day announced that she could no longer work for the family because they were Jewish. Ida showed the Nazi swastika pin attached to her shirt collar and disappeared from their lives forever.

Thinking back to the enormity of that heartwrenching moment, Joan let out a soft wail and wept for the next several moments.

The laughter was so hard that it turned to

tears when I interviewed one client about his 1950s youth in Cleveland. He was describing his high school fraternity and the age- appropriate hi-jinx he and his buddies pulled as frat members. Unlocking that piece of his past was an unexpectedly joyous experience. His endorphins obviously flowed freely, as the neuroscience of laughter has taught us. I somewhat nonchalantly mentioned to another client, Anthony, what I had learned about his dad’s immigration to the U.S. His father had arrived on these shores in a journey from Naples to Ellis Island in July of 1922. I was shocked when the response was an audible gasp followed by sobbing. The revelation about his father’s journey must have been like finding a

missing piece of himself. All his adult life, he had wondered how, when, and exactly from where his dad came to this country.

During an interview with one client, I asked about her three adult children, having no idea she was completely estranged from them all.

As she talked about the circumstances leading to each estrangement, the anguish on her face

became increasingly apparent. It was a cold February day in New York, yet sweat appeared on her brow. Her insistence on including this aspect of her life in her biography speaks volumes to her commitment to honesty and authenticity in capturing her whole story. Moments like these highlight the profound trust and connection that

can develop between a biographer and a client. Together, we take a path to create a legacy that reflects the entirety of their life, both the joys and the struggles. Bringing the past to the forefront can be a richly gratifying and rewarding experience. It is often a huge relief. In fact, this was labeled by Sigmund Freud as Cathartic Emotional Release (CER). Perhaps best of all, preserving these life stories for the next generations prevents them from being lost to history forever.

fire near Hunters Ridge on the Big Valley RD at approximately 3:38 p.m. last Wednesday. The Hunters Fire was discovered by aircraft en route to another incident, which allowed for quick response by fire crews, preventing it growing beyond 5 acres. By 6 p.m. that evening, dozer lines and hose lays had been established around 50% of the fire’s perimeter. Crews worked overnight to strengthen containment, and by 5 p.m. Thursday, containment was up to 80% with full control of the blaze expected by Friday. The cause of the Hunters Fire is still under investigation, though it is believed to be human-caused.

How many times do sexual assault survivors relive their original trauma?

When they report it to Law Enforcement.

When they have a medical exam for Sexual Assault.

When they talk to an advocate. When/if they go to therapy. When they try to sleep.

When a nightmare awakens them. When they have to retell their story in court.

When a friend asks, “What happened, are you alright?”

ANYTIME something reminds them of the assault (familiar neighborhood, vehicle, sight, smell or sound).

Is this not enough suffering? There is more. It starts all over again when the survivor is told that their perpetrator will soon be release from jail, back into the same community where the survivor is living! NOW...

The survivor has so many more things that they have to navigate, along with the trauma they are already dealing with.

Why does the law allow the person that did this to me to be released in the same town?

How many others will this happen to after they are released from jail? I’m afraid my perpetrator will seek retaliation. Am I going to see them everywhere I go?

Will they be trying to contact me?

What do I do if they start following me, I have no current protection order?

Will my perpetrator find where I live?

Will my perpetrator find where I work?

I didn’t tell my husband/wife, it happened so long ago, now I have to tell him/her! I have a family and children now, will this happen to them?

Do they know what my family looks like?

I want to move away so I don’t have to see my perpetrator.

Can I afford to move?

What if my family and I can’t find employment elsewhere so we can move away?

What if my family refuses to move?

Why do I have to leave everything and possibly lose everything I’ve worked for?

Why do I have to seek safety, I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG!

SURPRISE VALLEY ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS NOTICE:

Have you noticed higher electric bills this spring and summer
That’s because they are!

As of February 1st, Surprise Valley Electric increased rates 22% for residential and small business customers and 27% for irrigation.

I’m Ron Ketler and members of the community have asked me to run for Surprise Valley Electric Director of District 2, which includes Canby, Cal Pines, Likely, Madeline, Termo, and the Alturas area.

My wife Julie and I own the Kelley Hot Spring fish farm in Canby. It’s a family run farm, that includes our son Jacob, his wife Jessica (mom of our 3 grandsons), Jessica’s father Cole and her brother Joe Breakfield.

Not everyone is aware that Surprise Valley Electric is an Electric Cooperative. That means that it is owned by the members. (Us!) The definition of an electric cooperative is a private, not for profit company whose purpose is to safely deliver electricity to its consumers or members , at the most affordable price possible.

My goal as a director would be to make sure that it is indeed provided to you at the most affordable price possible.

My years of experience running a large successful business gives me the expertise necessary to be able to spot areas where things could be managed efficiently and ways to save and update equipment and supplies.

If keeping rates low is also your goal for a director, I would appreciate your vote. To vote for me, come to the annual Surprise Valley Electric Meeting on Sept 6, anytime between 3-5:30 pm. You can drive through, vote, and pick up your free tritip dinner, $25 voucher, and swag bag at the same time.

I will also be at the Surprise Valley Electric building from 2-3 on that day, to answer any questions you may have for me. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve you and keep our cooperative serving the community.

Modoc Medical Center Enhances Patient Care with New Infusion Department and Expanded Facilities

(MMC) is making significant strides to improve the quality of healthcare available to the community.

Alongside the fastmoving construction of a brand new Skilled Nursing Facility, MMC is also expanding its hospital facilities to include a dedicated Infusion Department, aimed at providing a more comfortable environment for its staff and patients.

The new four bay infusion department will provide a designated area for outpatient treatments, a luxury staff didn’t have before. Currently, the infusion nurse must coordinate with other departments (surgery bays, the inpatient physical therapy room, etc.) to find available space to administer infusion therapy.

MMC’s Acute Nursing Manager, Susan Sauerheber, shared, “This becomes very challenging on surgery days and when the Acute floor is at full census”. The addition of this dedicated space will allow for a more streamlined process for treating patients and offer more reliable resources for the staff.

Some of the infusion treatments that will be offered on an outpatient basis will include IV and injectable antibiotics, blood transfusions and blood components, infusions of medications such as Actemra; Remicade; Rituxan; Ocrevus; Tysabri and

other Auto-Immune Disorder medications.

MMC is also expanding its inpatient care facilities by adding two new semi-private rooms, providing four additional beds. “These four beds will expand our overall capacity to serve patients who require skilled care in our inpatient or swing bed programs. Ultimately, this gives MMC a greater ability to offer specialty care and treatment programs to patients while remaining close to home. We understand the tremendous financial, physical, and emotional burdens that extensive travel for fundamental care can place on patients and their loved ones. Our hope is that this addition will help to alleviate these burdens” said MMC’s Marketing Coordinator, Rylee Pedotti.

The Swing Bed Program at MMC, which has been in place for some time, is designed to assist patients transitioning from acute care to home care. The goal of this program is to help

patients regain strength and independence after significant medical events, such as cardiac diagnoses, orthopedic surgeries, postrespiratory illnesses, strokes, and other conditions. Patients are provided with a physician-led care team, with services tailored to their unique needs. “MMC provides comprehensive skilled care, from medication management and infusion services, to nutrition plans and physical therapy to improve patients’ physical, emotional, and social abilities to ensure a smooth transition to their home and daily lifestyle” Rylee explained. 8th Annual Modoc Heritage Foundation Hot Summer Car Show

The 8th Annual “Hot Summer Car Show,” organized by the Modoc Heritage Foundation, took place on Saturday August 24th, despite being almost “a wash, literally,” according to event organizers.

Heavy rain kept many car enthusiasts at home, but a few diehard participants braved the weather to showcase their vehicles.

The event, which featured a wide variety of summer cars, also included a sock hop, street dance, and live music by the Joey Carmon Band. A free lunch was

provided for seniors in the afternoon, courtesy of the foundation.

Organizers expressed their gratitude to local businesses for donating door prizes, which added excitement to the day despite the challenging weather conditions.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this internet website http://search. nationwideposting.com/ propertySearchTerms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2400290238 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee

auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916)9390772, or visit this internet website http://search. nationwideposting.com/ propertySearchTerms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2400290238 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.

Recreation Facilities received improvements in the 2024 on the Modoc NF

The Modoc National Forest team is diligently engaged in the comprehensive management and enhancement of various recreational facilities including campgrounds and trail systems. Through the allocation of funds from the Great American Outdoors Act, many campgrounds are undergoing significant improvements, with the addition of new amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, signage, and grilling

facilities. Notably, the Modoc County Farm Bureau stands as a key collaborative partner in this endeavor. Moreover, trail systems, notably the South Warner Wilderness trail system, are the recipients of substantial funding from the Great American Outdoors Act, complemented by additional support from the Student Conservation Association and the Backcountry Horsemen of America. Furthermore, the implementation of 19

new vault toilets across Modoc, encompassing locations such as Medicine Lake, Payne Springs, Duncan Reservoir, Lassen Creek, and Cave Lake Campground is made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds. These strategic initiatives are aimed at improving the overall visitors’ experience and promoting the sustainable utilization of the natural resources within the area.
