01 GO WILDLIFE WATCHING AT THE RANCHO GUADALUPE DUNES PRESERVE COUNTY PARK Tucked away inside the sprawling Guadalupe Dunes is the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve, home to 550-foot tall dunes (the tallest on the entire west coast) and an extraordinarily unique ecosystem. With opportunities for everything from hiking to fishing to bird-watching, we happen to think the Preserve is the best area along the entire coast to reconnect with nature and unplug from the everyday. The Preserve is home to a wide variety of bird species and wildlife, so be sure to bring along a pair of binos—keep your eyes peeled for everything from snowy egrets to the western snowy plover.

Cost: Free | Hours: Daily, 7 a.m. - dusk (with restrictions from March 1 - Oct 1 for plover nesting season) Tip: Walk along the ocean to Mussel Point (a 2.5 mile hike from the parking lot) for some seriously serene views. Or, pack a blanket and a cooler and treat yourself to an al-fresco oceanfront meal.

02 SOAK IN THE VIEWS AT OSO FLACO LAKE With walks suitable for any age and expansive views of the surrounding landscape, Oso Flaco Lake is a must-visit locale for anyone looking to find some serious serenity on their Santa Maria visit. This surprisingly woodsy area is home to spanish moss and marshy grasess, and feels more like a far-away forest than sandy dunes. The natural canopy supports an incredibly wide array of wildlife, including the sweetest songbirds you’ve ever heard. (Parking here will also give you easy access to the Preserve.)

03 KICK UP SOME DUST AT OCEANO For those who think of riding when they think of sand dunes, Oceano is for you. Bringing in over 2 million visitors each year, the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only area within the Guadalupe Dunes where vehicles are allowed on the beach. With five-and-a-half miles of open beachfront, be sure to bring your quads and dirt bikes and get ready for a day of downright-dusty fun.

What was the inspiration behind the Bike + Bottle project?

The idea was to combine my two passions—cycling and grape growing— with my knowledge of California’s Central Coast to offer an experience visitors wouldn’t otherwise get. We wanted to offer an expert guide and a local insider’s look at the area—not just a typical wine tour.

From start to finish, what can someone expect from the Bike + Bottle experience?

Every tour is unique to each group—the experience is super flexible and varies depending on a group’s skill level, what wineries work with their travel dates, etc. Tours can range anywhere from 1-3 days, and we’ll

A typical ride is a circuit-type ride or a loop, and we’ll visit no more than 2-3 wineries, as we don’t want to over-saturate the experience. We’ll ride past vineyards and talk about when each started, what kind of wines they’re known for, any cultural practices, etc. We’ll later come back to one of those wineries for a tasting and a great, local lunch.

How many people are on a Bike + Bottle ride, and are there options for private groups (bachelor parties, etc.)?

Right now, we’re solely focused on private groups, which allows us to completely customize each tour. Groups can range anywhere from a couple wanting to do a single, one-day tour of Central Coast wineries, to a group of 10 (or more) booking a three-day experience. Pricing also varies depending on how many are in your group.

How experienced of cyclist should someone be to join?

It’s really for all levels. Once I understand your group’s needs, I’ll customize a route, and we’ll go over a course profile beforehand. You’ll know exactly what to expect—whether that’s a flat 20-mile ride, or a 45-mile ride with hills.

Do you provide the bikes?

We don’t—everyone brings his or her own bike, which is how most cyclists prefer to ride. An ill-fitted bike from a rental shop can result in an uncomfortable ride or even knee issues.

What do you love most about Santa Maria Valley?

The authenticity—I really enjoy that. People are pretty real here. You also can’t beat the weather and the ability to go outside year-round. It’s just an

weekends), they can reach out a few weeks in advance. If they’re coming on a weekend or during a time that coincides with an event (i.e. car shows in Santa Maria), they should reach out at least one month or so in advance.

What do you love most about Bike + Bottle?

As a cyclist, it’s bringing a whole experience together where a visitor can exercise, have great food, enjoy great wine and meet new people. I also love its flexibility—it’s really unique in that way. My knowledge of the area allows me to change things on the fly if need be—we can add wineries if we have extra time, alter the route of it’s too difficult or not difficult enough, etc. I love that our tours aren’t so dogmatic—it’s all about creating a truly authentic experience and tailoring that experience to work for each individual group.
