The Legend of Gavan and His Wife

The Legend of Gavan and His Wife

Once upon a time there was a Master in a town by the lake. His name was Gavan. He lived in a castle by the beautiful lake. He had an evil and mean wife. She despised poor people and wouldn't give them old bread pieces.

God punished them for this behaviour. One day, a huge wave came from the sea. The land shook and a hole opened under Gavan's home. Gavan and his wife disappeared without any trace. The land swallowed people, trees and other houses.

Gavan had a baby boy. His nanny, Liburnijka ran away trying to save him. After a few kilometres, the nanny was so exhausted that she dropped the baby. On that very place, a bottomless lake appeared. Nobody ever saw the baby again.

Gavan's shepherd saw the whole event from the top of a hill. He came down to the nanny and told her: „Our tyrant has gone. The child will come back once the world becomes a better place.“ The two of them founded the town at the mouth of the river. They named it Skradin. They married and lived happily ever after.
