Santa

As we draw the curtain on the 30th season of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association (SFYSA), I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey we have embarked upon together. It has been a season filled with unforgettable performances, growth, and most importantly, the unwavering passion and dedication of our young musicians.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our donors, supporters, and the entire Santa Fe community. Your belief in our mission and your generous contributions have been the cornerstone of our success. Your support has enabled us to nurture and inspire the next generation of musicians, providing them with opportunities to learn, grow, and shine on the stage.

As we look ahead to the future, I am excited about this next chapter as we merge with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. This move promises to further enrich our musical landscape and create unparalleled opportunities for our talented young musicians. This union represents a coming together of two esteemed organizations with a shared commitment to music education and community engagement.

While we are closing the chapter on our 30th season, we are opening the door to a new era of collaboration, innovation, and artistic brilliance.

Once again, thank you for your continued support of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association. Together, we will continue to make a difference in the lives of young musicians and ensure that music remains a vibrant and integral part of our community.

The Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

Youth Symphony Association closes its 30th Season, I feel great joy in congratulating them on this outstanding year of education, programming, and service to the community. The Santa Fe Symphony Family is so thrilled to be merging with SFYSA, and in many ways we are a perfect fit. Our two organizations have collaborated for a number of years on side-by-side performances, sectional rehearsals, and more. We already work so well together and the skills and experiences of each of our artists, instructors, and staff members enhance one another. Many of The Symphony's orchestral and choral musicians are also educators, and needless to say we are all thrilled about this merger. The Symphony and the Santa Fe Youth Symphony are strong separately, but we’ll be even stronger together. I am excited to open this new chapter in our histories, and I am excited to meet each and every one of you involved with SFYSA. Thank you for your support of music, education, and children in our community. I look forward to seeing you soon!

WHYADIGITALPROGRAM?

Due to the rising cost of paper and environmental impact of producing printed programs, we have made the decision to switch to digital programs. This decision will help us prioritize your students’ music education needs by using our dollars wisely, providing more private and sectional instruction time, and continuing to provide financial aid to any family who needs it.

Over one year, the dollars saved on printed programs could provide:

120 hrs.

Private Instruction

Financial Aid for 20 Students

120 hrs.

Sectional Coaching

Thank you for helping us save 36,000 pieces of paper!

She has enjoyed playing and teaching ever since, alongside other pursuits such as graduate work in cell biology, teaching high school science, and homeschooling her own children. Naomi and her family have lived in New Mexico since 2006. She has maintained a small violin studio for the past 8 years, and has served on the Board of the SFYSA for about a year. For the 2023-24 season, she is the coach of SFYSA's Sierra Quartet. Program Notes

Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) was not only a cellist and composer, but also a chemist who made significant early contributions to the field of organic chemistry. He wrote his second string quartet in 1881. The piece was dedicated to his wife, possibly upon the occasion of their twentieth wedding anniversary. The movements feature beautifully lyrical exchanges among instruments, notably between the cello and first violin. The entire work was well-received during Borodin's lifetime. However, in 1953, adaptations of themes from the quartet’s second and third movements were featured in the musical “Kismet,” which made them even more broadly familiar.

Program Notes

“One By One”

Wayne Shorter

First recorded in 1963 by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for their live album Ugetsu, "One by One" is emblematic of the hard bop style, which heavily incorporated blues, soul, and latin music. Written by saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who went on to be a pioneer for modal jazz, this song exemplifies the large combo arrangements and dynamic shifts that the Jazz Messengers are known for.

“Organic Multicolor Quinoa”

Evan Strohmeyer

OMQ (or Organic Multicolor Quinoa) is an original composition by our keyboardist, Evan Strohmeyer, who is a Sophomore at LAHS. Inspired by 70s funk and fusion jazz, this song features fast arpeggios and rich harmonies in the horns while the rhythm section alternates between funk and samba grooves. Look out for this up and coming composer!

“Fly Me to the Moon”

One of the best known and most beloved jazz songs, Fly Me to the Moon was written in 1954 and became one of Frank Sinatra's signature songs after a recording arranged by Quincy Jones and accompanied by the Basie band. We have chosen this piece to feature three former SFYSA jazz instructors who shaped this program: Jan McDonald, Richard Snider, and Chris Ishee.

JAZZGUEST PERFORMERS

Richard Snider Bass

Richard taught band, jazz band, choir, guitar, music theater and humanities in the Santa Fe Public Schools from 1972-2000 where his ensembles received numerous superior awards in district and state competitions. After retiring from SFPS he taught at St. Michael’s High School winning the State 3A Concert Band Trophy in 2009. He taught instrumental music, double bass and music theory at NM School for the Arts from 2010-2013. He was awarded SF Partners in Ed “Teachers Who Inspire” award in 1994, NMMEA “Hall of Fame” award in 2001 and SF Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2015. He received both BMusicEd and MMusEd from Texas Tech University.

His professional performing career has spanned nearly 45 years and continues today. Ishee toured as keyboardist for trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, singer Engelbert Humperdinck, Latin singer Alvaro Torres, and others. In 1994, he settled in Santa Fe and joined local artist Jono Manson. Chris has two recordings under his own name, “Saguaro City” and “Saints and Sinners.” He is currently finishing a project of meditative healing music called “Mining Inner Wisdom” with his therapist wife, Carrie.

Greetings, and thank you for sharing this May evening with us in celebration of these fabulous young musicians. We are so pleased to be sharing the stage with SFYSA’s Mariachi Estrella, Quemazon Jazz, and Sierra Quartet.

As I reflect on this season, I’m so proud of the students for working through their first season with our Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO and Youth Philharmonic (YP) in shared rehearsals. I’d like to congratulate the YP students for tackling this level of repertoire, and not shying from the challenge. And, my congratulations to YSO for embracing the new musicians in their ranks, and helping set the standard of what this year of music could be. Finally, my deepest congratulations to this class of seniors, for their continued musical growth, consistent musical perseverance, and the palpable impact they’ve had on our orchestra.

As a reflection of 30 years of music making, at tonight’s concert you’ll see many former SFYSA directors returning to the stage to make music once more with our ensembles before the merger with Santa Fe Symphony. I’d like to thank each of them for joining us. Also, for setting the stage for the last decade of music I’ve been fortunate enough to make with the current and past young musicians of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association. Thank you, and enjoy! - William Waag

Bachelor and Master Degrees in Piano Performance, emphasis in pedagogy, decades of teaching experience. I believe music belongs to each of us, and that we each can enjoy lifelong active participation. I enjoy all ages and levels, and teach a variety of genres, including music theory and history. Member of national and local music teachers associations. My childhood in northern NM instilled in me a love of the surroundings, varied cultures and history, and (of course) green chili.

I especially love working with youngsters of 6 and up. I happily teach in groups when the opportunity arises. I use a comprehensive approach with theory incorporated into learning pieces and sight reading.
