KIRKPATRICK CENTER

Opened in 1995, the George G. Kirkpatrick Jr. Center is located on 160 acres in Northeast Gainesville, near the Gainesville Regional Airport, about 11 miles from the Santa Fe College (SF) Northwest Campus. Programs offered at the center accommodate the growing need for skilled personnel in emergency medical services, law enforcement and corrections professions in Florida and nationwide.

The Kirkpatrick Center is home to the Santa Fe College Institute of Public Safety (IPS), which encompasses SF’s Emergency Medical Services degree program and certificate programs in Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic. IPS also offers basic recruit training in law enforcement and corrections, courses that lead to certification required for employment in public safety, and continuing education for sworn law enforcement and correctional officers.

SF’s Criminal Justice Technology program also resides under the IPS umbrella, though courses for this program are offered at the Northwest Campus and online.

CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES DEFINED CERTIFICATE Certificate programs offer career and technical courses to prepare you for entry directly into employment. A certificate typically takes four months to two years to complete. However, students must meet specific basic skills requirements in English, mathematics, and writing.

ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program is designed to get you ready for a career, but in some cases it may transfer to a bachelor’s program. A.S. programs are a good balance of general education coursework and hands-on training with the end goal of preparing you to enter the workforce with a competitive skill set.

The A.S. degree typically takes two years to complete.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE A bachelor’s degree is the highest degree you can achieve in undergraduate education.

Santa Fe College offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degrees in certain program areas.

For most, a bachelor’s degree at SF is the next step after obtaining an A.A. or an A.S. degree. It allows students to continue to build skills and advance in a career field.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT WITH A CONCENTRATION IN PUBLIC SAFETY BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE (B.A.S.) The Business Programs department offers the Organizational Management, B.A.S. with a concentration in Public Safety Management. This track prepares students to lead public safety agencies. The program is designed for students who are already involved in law enforcement, fire services, corrections, security, and emergency medical services for managerial positions. The track focuses on developing decision-making abilities in emergency management, public safety, leadership and grant development.

The Organizational Management degree will help you develop the knowledge and tools to succeed in leadership positions in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. The degree is designed for students who hold either an A.A. or A.S. degree in any field and can be used by those who are new to the workplace or who seek advancement to leadership positions in their current field.

The program is flexible and is offered in multiple modalities, giving individuals increased opportunities to find schedules that meet their needs. The coursework can be completed entirely online, in person, or as a mix to give you the method of instruction that best fits your lifestyle. Class times are optimized around the schedules of students with a busy work life. Finally, the program is divided into a core set of courses and a specialization. The core coursework develops a base of knowledge useful in any operational environment while the track courses focus on public safety.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CERTIFICATE The Law Enforcement Officer basic recruit training program prepares students for a career in law enforcement to protect the lives and property of fellow citizens. Law enforcement officers patrol the community, investigate crimes, and prepare cases for prosecution. For those seeking dual certifications, the Institute of Public Safety also offers a law enforcement officer to correctional officer certification.

The law enforcement academy at the Institute of Public Safety prepares students as entry-level law enforcement officers in Florida. The program design is fast-paced and highly structured, consisting of a curriculum developed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The program spans two semesters at 770 contact hours and runs 40 hours per week. Instructors with years of real-world experience deliver the entire curriculum to students outfitted with training equipment that simulates the uniforms and duty-belts worn by police officers daily. We have found that the use of these aids greatly enhances mental and physical cognition as students prepare for their new profession. Finally, the program culminates in a crucible known as scenario weekend, where students demonstrate their newly acquired skills during reality-based training scenarios.

The programs offered are presented in one of the most innovative and high-tech facilities in the nation and cover a broad range of academic and hands-on training that qualifies students to take the state certification exam from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC).

To increase earning potential and help career advancement, students who complete this certificate can sign up for the Criminal Justice Bridge Course (see page 11). In one threecredit summer class, you can earn up to 24 credits toward an Associate in Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology.

CROSSOVER FROM CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CERTIFICATE The Crossover from Correctional Officer to Law Enforcement Officer basic recruit training program prepares students for a career in law enforcement to protect the lives and property of your fellow citizens. As a law enforcement officer, you will patrol the community, investigate crimes, and prepare cases for prosecution.

The correctional officer to law enforcement officer academy at the Institute of Public Safety prepares students holding certification as a correctional officer to become entry-level law enforcement officers in Florida. The program design is the same fast-paced and highly structured program as the law enforcement academy and consists of 518 contact hours.

Hourly attendance requirements may vary as our crossover programs are held in conjunction with those attending the basic law enforcement officer academy. While we recognize previous work experience, all crossover students are held to the same standards as students attending their first program, including the uniform and training equipment requirements.

Because of these standards, all students should find that this method delivers consistent, fair instruction to all students regardless of which program they attend. The program culminates in a crucible known as scenario weekend, where students demonstrate their newly acquired skills during reality-based training scenarios.

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER CERTIFICATE The Correctional Officer basic recruit training program prepares students for a career in corrections. Correctional officers oversee the custody of those who have been accused or convicted of crimes. For those seeking dual certifications, the Institute of Public Safety also offers a correctional officer to law enforcement officer certification.

The correctional officer academy at the Institute of Public Safety prepares students as entrylevel correctional officers in Florida. The program design is fast-paced and highly structured, consisting of curriculum developed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The program is 420 contact hours taught by instructors with real-world experience to students outfitted with uniforms and equipment worn by correctional officers currently. Using these aids greatly enhances mental and physical cognition through scenario-based training as students prepare for their new profession.

The programs offered are presented in one of the most innovative and high-tech facilities in the nation and cover a broad range of academic and hands-on training that qualifies students to take the state certification exam from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC).

CRIMINAL JUSTICE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE (A.S.) The Criminal Justice Technology A.S. program prepares students for a career in law enforcement, corrections, criminalistics or community-based control functions, but does not include certification as a law enforcement officer or corrections officer. Graduates of this program can begin a career as a skilled technician or specialist within a law enforcement agency, or apply to SF’s Law Enforcement or Corrections Academy for further training as a law enforcement or corrections officer. Courses for this program are offered at the Northwest Campus.

This program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of 60 credit hours. Content includes, but is not limited to, law enforcement and investigative activities; the handling and care of incarcerated individuals; procedures for initial and post contact with the public in such matters as obtaining and relating information; developing critical thinking and decision making processes; preparing reports; techniques for collection, preparation and transportation of physical evidence; methods of crime prevention; and methods for investigation, counseling and referral of neglected/dependent children, delinquents and youthful offenders.

To increase earning potential and help career advancement, students who complete any of the college’s Law Enforcement Officer or Correctional Officer certificate programs can sign up for the Criminal Justice Bridge Course (see page 11). In one three-credit summer class, you can earn up to 24 credits toward an Associate in Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE BRIDGE COURSE The three-credit Bridge Course allows Law Enforcement Officer basic recruit graduates to receive up to 24 credits toward the A.S. Degree in Criminal Justice Technology (AS 3702), and Correctional Officer basic recruit graduates can earn up to 12 credits. This course “bridges” the gap between topics presented in the basic recruit programs and classes on the same subjects that are offered in the Criminal Justice Technology Degree program by requiring independent study, research, and writing components not included in the training programs.

The Bridge Course is presented completely online, offering students the flexibility to further their education while still managing a job, family, or other obligations. Students engage in discussions, submit assignments, and participate in other course activities through the college’s electronic learning management system, known as Canvas.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program prepares students for a career caring for the sick or injured in emergency medical situations. As an EMT, you will provide on-scene life support, working with other emergency personnel (paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement officers) to stabilize and transport patients to hospitals.

The program at Santa Fe College is a limited-access, one-semester credit/certificate program, offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. This program consists of 320 hours of classroom, lab, hospital emergency department clinical, and ambulance rescue clinical components.

Students who successfully complete all components of the EMT program are prepared to take the State of Florida EMT and/or the National Registry of EMT’s Certification Exam. EMT’s are employed with EMS agencies, local fire rescue, hospitals, nursing homes and other various healthcare facilities. Graduates from this program will be eligible to apply for a State of Florida license.

The Santa Fe College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).

PROGRAM LENGTH: 12 Credit Hours | AVERAGE SALARY: $27,930

PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATE The Paramedic certificate program builds upon the skills learned in the EMT program on a more advanced level and prepares students to provide greater life support care to the sick or injured. As a paramedic, you will be part of an ambulatory response team and may work as an emergency medical services provider in the field. These agencies include private ambulance services, fire departments, public safety or police departments, hospitals, urgent care facilities, law enforcement agencies, the military, and municipal EMS agencies.

Paramedic students will learn advanced life support patient care procedures, which builds upon the knowledge of EMT. This program provides hands-on training in classes, laboratory settings, hospital emergency departments, and ambulances. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT’s Certification (NREMT) exam to become a licensed paramedic. Nearly 100 percent of SF paramedic students pass the NREMT exam.

The Paramedic credit/certificate program is a limited-access, three-semester 43-credithour program (minimum 1100 hours ) and is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) through the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Courses meet the requirements of the most current US DOT National Standard Curriculum (NSC) for paramedics. In addition to the NSC, courses include State of Florida specific information.

Students who successfully complete the requirements are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT’s Certification Exam and, upon achieving National Registry certification, you will be eligible to apply for a State of Florida license.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE (A.S.) The Emergency Medical Services A.S. program prepares students for promotions and advancement within the EMS industry. Students who are a state of Florida certified as EMT and Paramedic, and graduated from a Florida accredited EMS Training Program, have already fulfilled the core requirements and can earn an A.S. degree in as little as one or two semesters. With an A.S. degree in Emergency Medical Services, it is possible move beyond providing care in the field and seek a position in management with a public safety agency or healthcare provider.

The Santa Fe College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).
