SFC SUMMER COURSES

Registration begins at 9:00am March 1, 2024. Visit the Enrichment Programs tile on MySchoolApp.

Upper School summer courses taken for credit will be offered in one of three formats: In person, Hybrid Synchronous Remote Learning (HSRL) or online.

Hybrid Synchronous Remote Learning (HSRL) courses include synchronous and asynchronous learning five days a week. Each day, the teacher provides two to three hours of synchronous time to bring the class together, build a learning community, and to ensure students are on track for successful completion of the course. Students will also have two to three hours of independent or small group learning tasks each day.

Online courses are asynchronous and require students to complete work and stay up-to-date on assignments without as much oversight from the course instructor as the HSRL courses. All tests, quizzes, and assignments will be posted on the class page. Students will submit essays through their SFC email account.

ACADEMIC FOR-CREDIT COURSES

College Prep World History Online + FOR CREDIT (Asynchronous, with individual Zoom as needed)

This six-week intensive course is equivalent to the World History course offered at SFC during the school year; it covers world history’s economic, political, and cultural trends from the 15th century through the contemporary period. Students will focus on the movement of goods, ideas, and diseases through trade routes, the shifts in political power that accompanied these routes, and the radical transformation of the world from the Industrial Revolution and the resulting period of imperialism. This course focuses on the skills of critical reading, analytical writing, and logical rhetoric. Through a variety of assignments, students will encounter art, influential historical figures, and transformational world events in their attempt to understand who they are in the history of our world. Students will gain more appreciation of other cultures and their preconceptions of the world will be challenged in order to form a more robust Christian worldview. The goal of this course is a transformative encounter with world history that results in a student who can critically think about historical events to respond as a Christian to contemporary issues in the world.

The course is built for six weeks of assignments to be completed within a seven-week window. Assignments must be satisfactorily completed on time in order to receive a grade and credit for the course.

Algebra 3

This math camp is probably very different from most math classes you have taken before. Math education research supports the idea that the best way to learn mathematics is by solving problems in which, at first glance, the solution path is not obvious. It helps students develop what is called “adaptive expertise.” Students with adaptive expertise can go beyond routine competencies and can be characterized by their flexible, innovative, and creative competencies. A must for any student considering a STEM major.

The purpose of the math camp is to help students become better problem solvers, develop their adaptive expertise, and learn advanced algebra topics, many of which are not taught in most high school algebra curriculum. Topics to be learned in the math camp include multivariable polynomials, Vieta’s formulas, arithmetic-geometric series, and an in-depth exploration of conic sections. Learning these topics and the problem-solving experience is excellent preparation for all classes that come after Algebra 2, as well as good preparation for the ACT, SAT, and the American Mathematics Competition.

We will use the Art of Problem Solving book “Intermediate Algebra” by Richard Rusczyk. The book and solution manual can be purchased for $74 at the following Art of Problem Solving website: artofproblemsolving.com/store/item/intermediate-algebra

Prerequisite: Must have completed an HonorsAlgebra 2 course and earned at least a B+ orAlgebra 1with a 95% or above.
