¡VIVA LA FIESTA! Old Man Gloom has burned our troubles away, so it’s time for Fiesta de Santa Fe. While we often associate it with the parties and joviality, Fiesta is also a sacred holiday honoring the history of Santa Fe. The Candlelight Procession, Sunday night, is very solemn and serious. The entire Fiesta—this year is the 307th—commemorates our history. It is truly a cause to celebrate who we are today in this community. I personally look forward to the parades, especially the Pet Parade and the Historical/Hysterical Parade. What a wonderful opportunity to see our friends from around town all together on the Plaza! Take a look around—I doubt you will see many people on their phones. People interact face-to-face during Fiesta. They want to see and relate to each other. It’s a time to leave the cell phone at home and focus on connecting with old and new friends, live and in person. We all know how wonderful Santa Fe is, and this weekend we get to scream it to the heavens. Have a wonderful and safe Fiesta de Santa Fe. ¡Que Viva!

ROBIN D.G. KELLEY

Event For more than 300 years, exuberant cries of “¡Viva la Fiesta!” have reverberated through the historic Downtown Santa Fe area each autumn. The Santa Fe Fiesta Council put on the first Fiesta de Santa Fe in September of 1712 to commemorate the anniversary of the city’s 1692 reconquest. During this history-laden festival, Downtown is full of mariachi performances, arts and crafts booths, and food vendors. Events include food booths and live music, parades, and the Fiesta Fine Arts and Crafts market, all on the Plaza September 6–8; special masses; and the final candlelit procession to the Cross of the Martyrs the evening of September 8. Don’t miss the Desfile de los Niños, better known as the pet parade, September 7 at 9 am and the Desfile de los Gente, the historical/hysterical parade, September 8, beginning at 1 pm.—Sarah Eddy Fiesta de Santa Fe, Through September 8, 2019, free, Santa Fe Plaza, 63 Lincoln, and other locations, santafefiesta.org

EVENT As the summer comes to a close, talks hosted by the Lannan Foundation start up again. Kicking off the second half of the Readings and Conversations 2019 season is a conversation between Boots Riley and Robin D.G. Kelly on Wednesday, September 11. Riley is a prolific poet, rapper, songwriter, director, and screenwriter dedicated to social change. He is the author of the poetry book Tell Homeland Security—We Are the Bomb. Kelley is a United States history professor at UCLA. His books include Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original and Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class. Lannan’s Readings and Conversations events continue once or twice each month for the rest of the year. Then the first half of the 2020 season starts with talks from February–May.—SE Boots Riley with Robin D. G. Kelley, $5–$8, 7 pm, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, lannan.org

“As a younger painter I always swore I would never paint still life . . . and we all know how that promise worked out,” says oil painter Karen Haynes. Invited to participate in an invitational show of, yes, still life paintings, Haynes gritted her teeth and took a hard look at the subject. Her innate love of inconsistency and contradiction took over. Haynes’s still lifes eschew vases of perfectly arranged flowers. A single stem will be there, arranged horizontally between bricks. Her fondness for abstract expressionism comes through in the textures and patterns of her backgrounds and her use of repetition of form.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

PREVIEWS

EMILY’S GARDEN Obscura Gallery 1405 Paseo de Peralta obscuragallery.net September 6–October 19 Reception September 6, 5–7 pm

“My first photographs were of flowers and I suspect my last will be as well,” says Brigitte Carnochan. For this exhibit she combines her love of flowers with another passion, the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Carnochan notes that there are hundreds of flower references in Dickinson’s 1,800 surviving poems, and that the poet was well-versed in the 19th-century “language” of flowers, where particular blooms were symbols of human traits and emotions. She includes lines of texts from the poems in the images. Carnochan’s photographs are distinctive. She makes platinum/ palladium prints on handmade Japanese paper backed with gold leaf. Edges of both the image and the paper are uneven, lending an air of antiquity to the print.—LVS

BRUCE CASCIA Giacobbe Fritz Fine Art 702 Canyon giacobbefritz.com Through September 30

Bruce Cascia paints in a photorealistic style, mostly with oils and sometimes with acrylics. His neon signs, roadside diners, and hot dog stands are nostalgic windows into a past era, and wide-open rural landscapes and vintage cars also flow from his paintbrush. His Dogs in Pick-ups series grew from an association with the Boulder Humane Society, and a recent focus has been his Chicago Hot Dog series. While his paintings are highly realistic, he often utilizes dramatic skies to instill senses of emotion and scale. Cascia studied at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He is represented by Giacobbe Fritz Fine Art in Santa Fe.—Sarah Eddy

ANDRÉE HUDSON: CAPTURING LIFE Canyon Road Contemporary 622 Canyon canyoncontemporary.com September 6–13 Reception September 6, 5–7 pm

Andrée Hudson’s expressive paintings utilize strips of bright, contrasting color to depict movement and light. Her dramatic brushstrokes evoke an energetic, living quality in her paintings, which often depict the people and animals of the West. The painter received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Early in her career, her skill at portraying skeletal and muscular form lead her to illustrate for various medical publications and textbooks, but she soon found herself drawn away from meticulous detail and towards a lively, soulful focus on form, color, and light.—SE
