AH. IT'S A BIT QUIETER NOW, more like how Santa Fe usually is. For many, this is the most pleasant time of year in Santa Fe. The weather is often a touch cooler, though it hasn’t felt that way just yet, and visitors are still here, but at a very manageable level. It's the perfect time to be in Santa Fe. One big reason is Santa Fe Music Week, August 23–September 2, when the city celebrates our rich and varied music community. We at the Santa Fean are avid music enthusiasts who delight in all that Santa Fe has to offer on the musical front. We are not just an art town. The performance schedule over the next 10 days will keep your foot tapping and your soul alive. Be sure to enjoy at least some of the great music, from headliner and former Beatle Ringo Starr to many local musicians playing all over town. The festivities begin with the Platinum Music Awards on Friday, August 23, at the Lensic. Kudos to Tourism Santa Fe for pulling this together. It's going to be a gorgeous weekend, so get out and have some fun.

SANTA FE MUSIC WEEK
EVENT Now in its second year, the City of Santa Fe has designated August 23–31 Santa Fe Music Week (SFMW). SFMW opens with the Platinum Music Awards, August 23 at the Lensic. A program of the State of New Mexico, the third group of recipients come from the worlds of classical, jazz, mariachi, Native, and New Mexico folk. Concerts at The Santa Fe Opera with Ringo Starr (sold out) and Boz Scaggs are lined up for August 25 and 27. Hard choices on Sunday afternoon: Branden and James are at the Lensic and the Santa Fe Soul Festival presents God’s House Women’s Choir and operatic bass Soloman Howard at the Cathedral Basilica, both at 4 pm. Branden James, a singer whose resumé includes stints at the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago’s Lyric Opera, and James Clark,
a cellist and pianist, will be familiar to some Santa Feans as they performed regularly at Vanessie a few years back while literally getting their act together. Santa Fe Soul Festival was formed to celebrate African American art forms. SFMW will present mariachis on the Plaza August 26–29 at 3 pm, and the music will continue each of those evenings plus August 24 at 5:30 pm. Check the website for updates.—Lisa J. STORYTELLING AND MUSIC CELEBRATING DAVID ARBEN

EVENT When David Arben was marched into the forest and told to dig his own grave, his musical abilities were the only thing that saved him. The teenager was in a labor camp in World War II–era Poland, and, according to an article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, a prison assistant recognized him as a violinist and pulled him from the crowd of soon-to-be-executed. Arben went on to survive seven concentration camps. After the war, he made it to the U.S. as a student at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. When he died in 2017, it was after playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra for 34 years. A program of storytelling and music honoring Arben happens at Temple Beth Shalom on Monday. Arben’s protégé, violinist Rebecca Jackson, performs. THE SANTA FE TRADFEST
PERFORMANCE The Santa Fe TradFest celebrates the many varieties of traditional acoustic music in New Mexico and beyond. The festival began in 1974 as the Santa Fe Banjo and Fiddle Contest and has evolved ever since, now organized by the Santa Fe Friends of Traditional Music. Beyond the numerous performances happening each day and evening, workshops and jam sessions bring the woods of Camp Stoney to life. The performance lineup includes Lone Piñon, Jim Trujillo, Lara Manzanares, Sevda Choir, Full Owl, Mariachi Sonidos del Monte, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Jane Voss & Hoyle, Cedric Watson, Karina Wilson, and more. This exhibition shows around 25 paintings by Gregory Horndeski. The paintings are “narratives” in the sense that each one tells a story, either in the painted image itself or in text appearing around its frame. Most often, the painting and the surrounding text embellish and complement one another. In some works, large bits of text leave the frame and are incorporated into the composition, melding into Horndeski’s flowing nature scenes. This show focuses on the historic pottery of San Ildefonso Pueblo, also including early painting and some specially selected contemporary pottery. Among the work, some of which is by artists unknown, is pottery by Tony Da (1940–2008) and painting by José Disiderio Roybal (1922-1978). Da, the grandson of renowned potters Julian and Maria Martinez, was famous for his highly intricate animal designs. A motorcycle accident in the 1980s caused brain damage, cutting his artistic life tragically short. Roybal was particularly known for his finely outlined, jovial depictions of Tewa clowns, also called Koshare or Koosa. He used water-based paints, sometimes incorporated abstract designs, and had a strong attention to color and detail.—SE

For Arlene LaDell Hayes, Victoria Taylor-Gore, and Alexandra Stevens, this show is a celebration of lasting relationships. Stevens represented Hayes from the early 1980s to 2003 in Texas and Taos. When Stevens moved her gallery to Santa Fe, Hayes had representation at Joe Wade Fine Art, her family’s business. After Wade closed earlier this year, Stevens was delighted to welcome Hayes back. Hayes works in a variety of media and styles, and her work has a surreal edge. Taylor-Gore has shown with Stevens since 1995, her pastel paintings of landscapes and architecture bringing a warm glow to the gallery. Stevens is delighted to have both artists back under her gallery roof. Hayes and Taylor-Gore will paint at the gallery August 24, 11 am–3 pm.—Lisa J.
