Enhancing Quality of Life through Park Improvements Sergeant Derby Park Playground Renovations
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in our recent playground design outreach meetings at the park. Your time, feedback, and ideas have been invaluable to us.
Throughout our conversations, we’ve gathered a wealth of insights and suggestions, and we’re excited to share some of the key themes that emerged:
• Neighborhood Park Atmosphere: Many of you appreciate the cozy, neighborhood park atmosphere of the playground, providing a safe and enjoyable space for younger children.
• Eng aging Play Features: There’s a desire for the new playground to offer play features that both engage and challenge children, encouraging them to explore and develop skills like climbing, swinging, and sliding.
• Swings: Swings are a favorite among children and caregivers alike. We plan to include swings suitable for younger children, older children, and adults.
• Ad ditional Seating: Requests for more benches and picnic tables, along with new refuse/recycling receptacles, have been noted.
• Exciting Slides: There’s a desire for bigger slides with twists and turns, as well as a slide for younger children to enjoy with their friends.
• Imaginative Play Features: Imaginative play features, located closer to the ground and accessible to all ages and abilities, are highly valued.
• Spinner Feature: Incorporating a spinner feature into the new design has been a popular suggestion.
• En hanced Mobility: Many have suggested the creation of rubber surfacing at the playground entrance and around key features to enhance mobility.
We’re excited to share the design renderings that we’ve been working on. Our goal is to begin construction in November/December and reopen the playground in early to mid-December. Thank you for your support and participation. We look forward to creating a new playground for generations to come.
Director’s Letter
Greetings! Thanks for exploring this fresh edition of the fall 2024 activity guide. The guide is packed with information on events, classes, programs, and opportunities to get involved in the community this season. There are many ways to connect. Volunteer through CityServe, donate to Friends of Parks and Recreation (FOPAR), or reach out to our many community partners.
We’re celebrating a big milestone. This year marks the 50th anniversary of our sister city relationship with Shingu, Japan. The year-long celebration will culminate with a special event on October 5, and you’re invited to join in on the festivities.
Autumn is a time of change--as the weather cools, kids go back to school, the city’s leafy trees offer vibrant color, and ocean currents shift closer to winter swells. Seasonal change is perhaps a relevant metaphor for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Within the past year, I’ve had the opportunity and pleasure to appoint our new Recreation Superintendent – Tremain Hedden-Jones. Tremain has worked for the city for many years and has served in a variety of roles within the department, including working in youth and teen programs, city museums, the London Nelson Community Center, community events and classes, and most recently, in administration, where he oversaw customer service and department systems. We are thrilled to have Tremain at the helm of recreation for the City.
In recent months, I’ve also appointed a new Parks Superintendent - Mike Godsy. In his prior role as a Parks Field Supervisor, Mike oversaw the care and maintenance of 32 parks, 13 miles of street medians, the downtown business district, and diverse gardens and landscapes. Prior to his work in Santa Cruz, Mike served for ten years as the Park Section Supervisor for the City and County of San Francisco. Mike is a tremendous service-oriented leader, and we are fortunate to have him as a leader.
We’re also grateful to have our newly assigned Public Information Officer, Joyce Blaschke!
As editor-in-chief, Joyce is instrumental in creating the activity guide. She is also responsible for managing the department’s communications and social media. This season, please join me in welcoming this new cadre of recreation and park leaders!
More exciting changes are on the horizon. The San Lorenzo Park redesign project will wrap up, the Harvey West Park design and program assessment will launch, the city received approximately $7 million in grant funds from the California Coastal Conservancy, which will be used to make improvements to Santa Cruz Wharf. Seargent Derby Park will be upgraded with a new playground and a communityled fundraising project will expand the skatepark. Finally, the activity guide will get a new look starting with winter-spring 2025 edition. We wish you a fantastic fall season.
See you in the parks!
