Pride and Identity An exploration of Queer Santa Cruz

6th-12th grade Background Queer Santa Cruz Stories of the LGBTQ+ Community in Santa Cruz County is the MAH’s first virtual exhibition curated in collaboaration with the Diversity Center of Santa Cruz County. Queer Santa Cruz explores the rich history and diversity of Santa Cruz County’s LGBTQ+ community. What does “Queer” mean? Queer is a term used for all sexual and gender identities that are not heteroexual or cisgender. Many queer-identified people prefer the term to describe their identity because it is both broader and deliberately ambiguous than the identities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Ideal Grades The Pride & Identity lesson plan is suitable for 6th graders to 12th graders. Adjust the lesson according to your class or group. You can also ask a MAH staff member to give you a virtual tour.

Objective Introduce the virtual exhibit in a way that highlights the importance of having a visible and accepted identity in the Santa Cruz queer community. Participants can connect their own identity to the group’s larger identity by creating their own Mind Map.
