Santa Barbara Yacht Club September 2022 Scuttlebutt

On September 17, Santa Barbara Yacht Club along with Santa Barbara Fish Mar ket and the Paddle Sports Center will be gathering at the Harbor in support of the 2022 Coastal Clean Up Day. We will be removing trash all along the Breakwater and throughout the harbor all the way to Shoreline Café. For those of you that have some free time on the 17th please join Whitney and I to support this worthwhile effort! More details to come as we get closer to the date. Most of you are probably aware of the fact that this is not only the 150th anni versary of Santa Barbara Yacht Club but it is also 150th anniversary of Stearns Wharf. The city will be celebrating the Stearns Wharf anniversary on October 8th. The celebration will be held out on the pier where there will be live music, food, and other festivities. Additionally, the Mystic Cruzar owned by Roger and Sarah Chrisman will anchor off the wharf and I’ve even heard rumors that cannon fire may be in the works. Hoping we may even be able to pull together a SBYC boat parade as well in celebration of this 150th anniversary milestone!

As we head into this month, I’m looking forward to beautiful crystal-clear September and October skies along with brisk morning tempera tures that signal the transition into the last quarter of the year. Since joining the club I’ve heard amazing stories about the annual Catalina cruise held in August of each year. After hear ing that Matt Wilson, Kent Pierce, Harry Atterbury, and several others were going to make the trip over in a smorgasbord of dinghy’s, whalers and tenders, Whit ney and I decided to take the plunge. We made the trip over for the first time and enjoyed four incredible days in Avalon. We were blessed with beautiful weath er, warm water and amazing activities thanks to our fleet captain Stephen Mil lard and many others who helped keep all those who made the journey over busy and entertained. Special thanks to Kent Pierce who made the enormous yacht club Burgee available for the weekend and Roger and Sarah Chrisman for allow ing us to use Polaris for the judging of the dinghy parade!

3 VICE COMMODORE DAVID SADECKI Well, another successful King Harbor race is in the books. Thanks to Race Chair Rob Miller for his time orga nizing this regatta that started 75 boats this year. Also, thanks to Staff Com modore Tony Papa and Sabrina for suppling the Race Committee boat, as well as Staff Commodore John Berryhill and Caron for suppling the Check In boat. The race was followed by a fun Catalina Cruise. Whether you went for the first week at Avalon, the second week at Cherry Cove or both weeks, Fleet and Cruise Captains Stephen and Bente Millard did a great job of keeping ev eryone busy with fun events. Thanks again to all the mem bers who volunteer their time to make these great events happen.

The Santa Barbara Yacht Club has a long history of contrib uting time and funding for a variety of causes and projects. As most of us have heard, our front desk assistant Lauren Russ, lost her car and some of her possessions in a vehicle fire. Suesan Pawlitski organized a Go Fund Me page to help Lauren recoup her unplanned loses. This allowed members to contribute and help Lauren with the purchase of her first new car. This generosity by our members and willingness to help others is an example of why I love the club!

One of the duties of the Vice Commodore is to appoint a Nominating Committee. This committee will select a Vice Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, and three Directors. This year’s committee Chair is Staff Commodore Tony Papa. The committee’s goal is to propose a list of nominees for election at the Annual Meeting.

See you on the water, David Sadecki Vice Commodore

By the way, summer is not over! The weather for July and August was spectacular. As most of us are aware, the months of September and October are historically the best months in Santa Barbara. The club has a lot of events planned as well as some great racing on the calendar for September. The month kicks off with the Labor Day Cruise, followed by the Charity Regatta, the Friendship Paddle, and one of my fa vorites, the Luau. Our beach with the Palapa is a great place for a beach party. Some great racing is also planned for Sep tember including Harbor 20 Singlehanded Race, Women’s Skipper Championship and Shalhoob Women’s Invitational and the Miramar Anchor Down Race.

REAR4 COMMODORE DENNIS BONECK

The Fiesta Cup followed and again we want to thank Jane Watkins who has been the Race Committee Chairperson for the last 17 years. Now that is dedication! It was a great couple of days of racing in perfect conditions. Pat Toole skippered 3 Big Dogs to a first-place finish in the J70 fleet, Geoffrey Slaff on his Harbor 20 won his fleet and Jeff Fargo brought Mocos in for a 1st in the Melgas 24 fleet.

One house keeping note, we all enjoy using our dock carts, however, if the carts are not returned to the club the mem bers who need them also can’t use them. If you take one, please return it to the club ASAP. Carts are showing up in public parking lots, bushes, launch ramps, etc. On that note, we’ll see you on the water, Dennis Boneck, Rear Commodore. All Virgos SBYC

The Santa Barbara to King Harbor regatta had over 70 boats start after an evening of dancing, eating, and drink ing at the Palapa. Chaired by Rob Miller, racers endured light winds on this storied race. Bolt from Balboa YC was the overall winner skippered by Craig and Carson Reyn olds. After leading by a wide margin, Adjudicator was given the Sportsmanship Award, they missed the last mark, called it on themselves and retired from the race. Dr. Laura Schlessinger skippered her boat Trifecta, a J109 to win her fleet. By the way, they also came in 6th overall. Tom Cullen and his crew brought in Fuego for a 3rd in the same class. Dirk Freeland and crew picked up a 1st in thier class on Sundowner and Bernie Girod and crew with a 2nd in the same fleet on Rock & Roll. Argo, skippered by Ken Keid ing also recorded a second. The Lipton Cup Tropy (housed at the top of the Staircase) was deeded in November of 1923 by Sir Thomas Lipton and has been raced for by the Star fleet for 99 years! It features such names as Dennis Connor, Lowell North, Paul Cayard, George Szabo, Mark Reynolds and Eric Doyle. This year’s winners were Nick Madigan and crew Mark Strube.

Team Blue was the overall winner and consisted of Scott & Emma Deardorff, Andra & Taylor Escola, Carly Kieding, Larry Leveille, and GT Koljeski. Special thanks to all that donated the use of their Harbor 20’s and helped make this a great weekend.

Staff Commodore Francie Lufkin and her team of volunteers deserve a special thanks for all the work they have been doing for the last several years making the Charity Regatta such a success. THANK YOU!

Last month several regattas were enjoyed by racers and spectators of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club.

Upcoming events In September include the popular Goleta Beach Race, Biltmore Paddle/Row and the “Pride of the Club,” Charity Regatta, benefiting Visiting Nurses/Hospice.

The Staff Commodore Regatta had a great turnout with eleven Staff commodores participating, Scott Deardorff, Andra Escola, Larry Leveille, John Demour kas, Dennis Friedrich, Ken Clements, Francie Lufkin, Kent Pierce, Bill Guil foyle, Jim Pattillo, and Bob Young.

We are just over the halfway point in the 2022 CHRF racing season. It has been a great year so far with 31 boats participating and battling it out for the series champion ships as well as the high point championship. With 10 races left in the season, a lot is yet to be determined.

We have a busy schedule in the next month. Upcoming races include Summer #4 on Aug 18th, Goleta Beach race on Aug 27th, Labor Day race on Sept 4th, and the Charity Regatta on Sept 10th. of & Doug Johnstone

The Full Monty was raced on July 17th with Ferdinand serving as race committee. The Full Monty sends racers up to the Goleta Beach Pier and back to finish on the line in front of the club. Fourteen boats including 1 qualifier started the race in very promising conditions with winds of 16 -18 knots. Unfortunately, the wind died on the return leg which resulted in boats struggling to get to the finish line in 2 knots of wind. In seventh place was Remedy; in sixth, Repeat Offender; in fifth, Skookum; in fourth, Escapade; in third, Tinka; in second, Valhalla; and taking home first place was Fuego. Summer #3 was raced on the last day of July. Mojito served as race committee and sent 14 boats including 1 qualifier on a course of K4. The wind at the start was a light 3 knots but built to 16 knots on the course be fore returning to light conditions. Finishing seventh was Webster; in sixth, Skookum; in fifth, Repeat Offender; in fourth, Escapade; in third, Sprite; in second, Cat Nip; and finishing in first place was Cherry Bomb.

Summer Sailing Program

As I type this message, we are wrapping up the final day of our 2022 SBYSF Sum mer Sailing Program. This year we ran our largest Summer Program in history with over 250 registrants over the tenweek span. Our Garibaldis class which debuted in Summer 2021 was a huge success once again. This class pairs a few sailors as young as five with an instructor on their boat. Offering a safe and comfortable environment for learning. We saw major successes in all of our learn to sail programs, especially our ever popular Novice program. In our racing programs, we saw great competition and Corinthian spir it across all fleets. I would like to thank all our amazing coaches who deliver our program in a safe and effective manner. We hope that everyone had a fantastic Summer, and we look forward to seeing many of our sailors back in the future!

For many years the Westlake Yacht Club has hosted around the Island Race on the Fourth of July. The race is a celebra tion of Independence Day and a great chance to go sailing, enjoy the lake and summer, and have a nice competition.

“ROUND THE ISLAND” By Ole Eichorn

Making things more interesting, Westlake Lake has an island connected to the mainland via a low bridge. To race “Round the Island” in a sailboat, it is necessary to capsize or drop your mast to get under the bridge. This makes for an interesting diversion and includes lots of spectators in power boats, squirt guns of every description, people swim ming in the lake, etc. There’s usually an interesting mess as everyone gets to the bridge at about the same time, and this year was no exception. (See pics attached!)

As a longtime resident of Westlake, I have sailed in this race for decades. This year, I invited a couple of SBYC Junior Skipppers to join me, Ryan, and Sam Wells (each 14), who sail with me on my J/70 Mojito in Santa Barbara. (Their Mom Anne Wells is also an avid J/70 sailor.) Ryan and Sam sailed an FJ and won! I’m pretty sure they’re the first SBYC members to have their name on the perpetual trophy for winners of this race. (Last time I’m bringing them to a regatta) Cheers!

MAKING HISTORY SINCE

DEDICATION CEREMONY – December 1966

The present Santa Barbara Yacht Club dedication ceremony on December 18, 1966, at 4:00 P.M. was the culmination of much effort on the part of many members. Preliminary plans for the facility were formulated by the architectural firm of Cooke-Frost-Greer & Schmandt, and presented to the Directors in 1965. After approval by the membership, the firm of Richard Nelson, Architect, was commissioned to provide working drawings, specifications and supervision of the work. At a cost of $2,859, Villal ba House Movers moved the then existing clubhouse to a temporary location on the same site so that we would have a facility in operation during the construction of the new building. Bids were received on 17 March 1966 from five General Contractors, and a bid from the firm of J.W. Bailey Construction Company for $113,117 was accepted on 25 April 1966. Work commenced shortly after with the driving of 30’ to 40’ foundation piles. In order to finance the improve ments, $120,000 worth of Bonds were purchased by the members, to be paid back by Club operations. Several mem bers provided interim construction funds. Several changes and additions were made as work on the building progressed and the final cost was just under $118,000.

Dedication of the clubhouse was carried out by Commodore Cooke on 18 December 1966, with the City Counsel, Board of Supervisors and other yacht clubs being represented.Betty Cooke smashed a bottle of champagne over the flag pole, newly rigged by Eric Graham. The Jefferson saluting cannon was fired. Officers hoisted their flags for the first time and Mayor Don McGillivery said a few words. An American flag secured by Harry Idding and Congress man Teague, which had been flown over the nation’s Capital, was raised under the direction of the Girl Mariners. We were well launched in our new clubhouse.

1872

In writing this month’s article on our Club history, I thought about the turmoil and disagreement that happened during the current remodel of our clubhouse. Some of the club’s historical reading that I have done indicates that when our current clubhouse was proposed and eventually built in the early 1960s there was a lot of turmoil and disagreement. Some members felt the old club house was just fine and others questioned where the money for this new club house would come from. In 1965, local banks were unable or unwilling to make a financial proposal unless half of the project was guaranteed by the membership. The banks were concerned that they may have to foreclose on members, creating ill will in the community. A Bond Issue idea was floated and eventually came into being, but with a lot of set backs and controversary. Several members had to provide interim financing for the project, which was already in the construction stage. (Sound familiar?) The whole procedure took much time and dedication from many members.

The following is a reprint of the DEDICATION CERE MONY – December 1966. This reprint is from THEN & NOW, the Yacht Club’s 1st history book, written in 1978. It is unknown who wrote this article.

The Youth Sailing Foundation ended their season with a wonderful Awards Banquet in August. As the President of the SBYCW’s group, I was given the honor of assisting our YSF Chair, Lil Nelson, in presenting the “Outstand ing Jr. Woman Sailor for 2022”. The Katherine Brown perpetual award is given annually to the young woman who has been judged to have made a significant contribu tion to the junior sailing program. It is not solely based on excellence in competition but on sportsmanship and integrity as well. Carly Kieding, representing the San Marcos High Team, was selected as the outstanding Jr. Women’s sailor this year. We are so proud of her accom plishments. Thank you to Lil Nelson, Marilyn Goodfield, Linda Stirling and Francie Lufkin for attending. Our calendar is full this fall, and we have had some changes, so I want to share them with you.

It’s great to see everyone back at the club in the fall. I hope your summer adventures were awesome. It looked like the trip to Catalina was wonderful. Several of you had long awaited trips you got to finally enjoy and I’m sure it was well worth it. In July we were able to watch “live” on Instagram, as the 4 young paddlers crossed the Pacific Ocean, starting in San Fran cisco paddling to Hawaii, the transpacific course. They were on a 20’ boat with no support team following them and they broke the women’s world record. They will be our guest speakers at our October luncheon. You won’t want to miss that!

President’s Retreat – Thursday, November 10th thru Saturday, November 12th I am really excited about our Presidents Retreat this year. We will be close to home in the Solvang/ Santa Ynez Valley. I have reserved rooms for us at the Landsby in Solvang. There are a couple of photos here for you to see it. You can call The Landsby to reserve your room under the SBYC Women’s group. There are so many fun things to do, a beautiful courtyard and fabulous sitting area for us to gather, lots of wonderful restaurants, wine tasting, hiking, bike riding and shopping. Our Commodore, Eli Parker and I are working on a fun gathering at his tasting room! More details to follow in an email very soon.

The SBYCW’s group hosted the “Pedal the Pacific” ladies for lunch in July as they made their way through Santa Barbara from Seattle Washington. Their destination was San Diego. These young women are bringing awareness to the horrific situation of Human Trafficking. Those of us Board members that were able to attend were honored to listen to them speak and tell us about their individual journeys. We also learned a great deal about what is hap pening with the human trafficking issue in Santa Barbara County from our local DA, Joyce Dudley, Victim Witness Assistance Program Director, Megan Rheinschild and Brea Burkholz, Co-Chair of the Junior League of Santa Barbara Impacts Committee One of our philanthropic focuses for the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Women’s group is to raise funds for scholar ships for young aspiring sailors to be able to pursue their goals through the Youth Sailing Foundation. The YSF Program Director for the club, Nick Kaschak, has done a fabulous job at building an extremely successful program.
