ORt® BorbeirQ. To THE Reader; It is not my object to try to tell you all that can be said in praise of Santa Barbara County, nor to tell you anything new, if you have chanced to read former publications, but to fill the proverbial “long-felt want.”

Every mail brings to our

newspaper offices, and individual citizens, letters of inquiry too numerous to be answered.

As all literature descriptive of

Santa Barbara, suitable for mailing to such parties, has been exhausted, tliese few pages have been hurriedly compiled, to supply an immediate deJnand, while a more pretentious pub lication is being prepared.

It has been my intention to give a fair and impartial account of our climate, soil, productions, industries without favoritism ; two

In addition to the knowledge gained by a residence of twenty years in the county, I have obtained valuable informa tion from other publications, especially the “New Year Edition” of the Morning Press; “Santa Barbara As It is,”

by Mrs. M. C. E. Hall-AVood of the Independent; and “A Business Mans Estimate of Santa Barbara,” by Mr. Joseph J. Perkins.

I am also indebted to our Mayor, Mr. P. J. Barber, our City Council and others for valuable assistance, who will be credited in tlie proper place.

Realizing that this little book may be scattered some what widely, and that many who have tired of the rigors and fervors of the eastern climate, and are now looking to our golden west for a new home, where tliey may regain health, engage in business, or having hnished their life's work, pro long their declining years, may be influenced by its contents; and remembering that very many have been induced,by highly colored advertising literature, to make great sacrifices in order to come to California, only to be disappointed, I have carefully avoided exaggeration.

That I may not over-tax the credulity of those who may chance to read in the following pages, what may seem to them Munchausen tales, I have procured articles from leading citizens, in various sections of the county, especially qualified to write on their respective subjects, and the mention of whose names to anyone at all acquainted in Santa Barbara will be a sufficient.guaranty for the truthfulness of their con tents.

Some of our enthusiastic citizens, who have escaped the horrors of disease by coming hither, as well as some enthusi astic writers, have described Santa Barbara as an “Earthly Paradise,” and the “Land of Eternal Sunshine,” which may be the impressions they have received, but which may work on the imagination of the stranger and cause him to expect too much.

Kind read(ir, if you will come, not like Ponce de Leon, looking for the “Fountain of Life'’ or the “Land of Perpetual Youth,” you will not be disappointed, and the contributors to this pamphlet will join a host of hospitable people in welcom ing you to our midst.

HE Coast of the State of California is about 800 miles in length, corresponding in latitude to a strip on the Atlantic coast from northern New Jersey to the

southern boundary of Georgia.

One-third of the distance up from the southern extremity of the State—latitude north, or about that of Atlanta, Georgia—there is a sharp turn of the coast where the general direction, for a distance of 70 miles, is exactly east and west and is the only portion of the coast thus situated, with a southern exposure.

The County of Santa Barbara is in the shape of an irreg ular parallelogram, 35 miles wide and 70 miles long—that portion of tlie coast line running east and west forming tlie southern boundary. It is this curvature in the coast, tlie Santa Ynez mountains that parallel it, and shield us from the north winds, and the warm currents of the Pacific, that give the southern portion of Santa Barbara County a climate, that even in California is considered remarkable.

As we have already stated, the county is traversed by the Santa Ynez mountains, whose general trend is east and west.

It is thus divided into two portions, the northern and southern; the former being much the larger and comprising four import ant valleys: Santa Maria, Lompoc, Los Alamos, Santa Ynez.

Two islands . . . 150,000 acres

Our present population is from 18,000 to 20,000, of which something more than one-half are gathered in the City and suburbs of Santa ● Barbara; so it is plain that we are not crowded.

Probably we are in a position to say to 15,000 or

20,000 farmers:

Come hither witli your families; here is land

equal to your needs; out of our soil you may support your homes, schools, court, churches, all the needful institutions of a civilized coinuuniity.

Nature here is an exhaustless lesson, a perennial charm!

It would seem as if Flora must have upset her seed basket here, such is the profusion of our native plants and flowers; and from the sea mosses washed up by the tide, to the lichens on our mountains, all are on a scale of such luxuriance!

The charm that wins all eyes and from vvhich none turn weary, is the charm of scenery.

We have mountains, bold,

rugged, massive; canons deep cut, in which are noble growths of oak and sycamore and through which flow trickling streams .vhich winter rains swell to imposing rivers; foot-hills which look down on valleys spacious and picturesque; the ocean with its ever varying light and shade, its vast and beautiful expanse.

STOCK RAISING. The industries o£ this most wonderfully favored section are numerous and varied.

From the first settlement of the county by the missionaries and Spaniards, over one hundred years ago, until very recent years, stoclv raising was the only industry engaged in.

The rich valleys, that are now dotted

with tlie cosy and happy homes of a prosperous population, swarmed with immense herds of cattle, slieep and horses.

Stock raising is still a great and leading industry, but is carried on in the foot-hills and the isolated valleys of the interior.

The large ranches supply our markets with the

choicest of beef, and contribute largely to the markets of the big cities.

Sheep are still raised in large numbers.

The channel

islands are almost exclusively d(!voted to sheep raising. The Santa Rosa Island supports 70,000 and Santa Cruz 100,000 head. Here they require little or no attention, They roam tlie island at will, and are collected twice a year to be sheared.

Wool is one of our principal exports.

The total absence of cold weather,

snow and blizzards—which an eastern winter implies—make the labor and expense very light. The farmer is not obliged to house his stock in winter, and feed it what he has raised durino- the summer. He turns his vouno; calves, colts and lambs into his pasture, where they prosper the year round, without his care or attention.

DAIRYING. Dairying is an extensive and protitabie industry.

Some

of the large stock ranches are devoted exclusively to butter and cheese making.

Most of tlie small canon farms support a few cows, and make their contributions of butter to the larife shipments that are made to San Francisco.

POULTRY. Poultry-raising is indulged in by most farmers to a limited degree, with an occasional sheltered nook by a rippling mountain stream where some man with delicate health, and perhaps limited means, may be found devoting his whole time to the chicken and turkey, with pleasure and profit. Chickens sell at from $5 to $7 per dozen; turkeys from fifteen cents to twenty-five cents per pound. Eggs are now (January) forty cents per dozen, but the average price, however, is twenty to thirty cents. Poultry-raising offers an occupation to every man and woman able to do anything.

MINING. Mining of various kinds is carried on.

Quicksilver has

been mined extensively, but is not now, on account of the extreme cheapness of that metal.

Asphaltum and bituminous

rock we have in abundance. The most extensive asphaltum mines on the Pacific Coast are those of the California Asphaltum & Petroleum Company, about ten miles west of the city of Santa Barl-ara. Several eastern cities have their streets paved with material from these mines.

Sulphur is abundant and impregnates several mineral springs with medicinal virtue.

We have extensive beds of gypsum, now being worked for the manufacture of plaster-of-Paris, also limestone, from whicli is obtained lime for use in the mechanical arts.

Gold, silver and copper are found in small quantities.

Oil has been discovered in paying quantities, and the industry is being developed.

Natural gas

is indicated

in

many sections, and at

The immense shipments of

the almost water-white product, from these: apiaries, is simply astonishing. Much of our honey finds a market in Europe.

Agriculture, horticulture and arboriculture are industries that have made our county famous.

As these

will

be

mentioned in articles on the several valleys and their products, I will only refer to them now.

FLOWERS. Floriculture, particularly in the Satita Barbara valley, is followed as an industry—a paying one too. Santa Barbara is celebrated for the beauty and abundance of her flowers.

Here are geraniums used for hedges; fuchsias with propor tions of trees ; and beds of lilies and roses estimated by acres.

A rose bush in the Arlington Hotel grounds has spread over sixty feet of the veranda, and three lady guests have clinibed into its branches at once.

Our flowers are shipped to San Francisco, and even Chicago has her churches decorated with our lilies at Easter time.

SOIL. The arable soil is for the most part either alluvial or

adobe.

The alluvial soil found usually in the lower levels is very deep, rich and fertiln. It is this soil that produces the Lima bean for which our county is celebrated, and affords us fresh vegetables and strawberries every week in the year. This soil grows well all varieties of fruits found in the Eastern and New England States, besides prunes, figs, olives, peanuts, English walnuts, grapes, plums, lemons, limes, oranges, loquats, guavas, persimmons, cherimoyers, dates, bananas and numerous other semi-tropical fruits.

The adobe soil is black and quite fertile.

It is best

adapted to barley, mustard, oats, wheat or fiax and furnishes tlie richest, of pasturage.

Land suitable for stock raising and dairying can be had from

per acre upward.

Good agricultural lands can be purchased in the county

for $50 per acre, better for |75, choicer for $100; while in especially favored spots land especially adapted to especially profitable crops, $150, $200, even $300 are asked.

It is said

we charge for climate. In some cases perhaps we do. What were Santa Barbara climate wortn in Chicago or New York'S Land at these larger figures, as compared with Eastern prices, seems exorbitantly high ; and when one reads of apricots, prunes, olives, walnuts, lemons, all implying trees that require time to grow, the‘ query is, “How can such prices be paid for soil in which to plant them

It is because these trees will

grow in our soil, and because they are so profitable that such prices can be demanded.

The reader will appreciate this better when he has read of what can be produced on an acre in a season.

NO IKRIGATION. Many an eastern farmer is possessed of the idea that nothing is produced in California without irrigation—some thing he has never been accustomed to.

Such is not the case.

The writer a short time ago received a communicatioi> from the Department of Agriculture at Washington,requesting a report of the acreage under irrigation in the county, and received lengthy blanks to be filled out. Investigation proved that we have not a single acre irrigated for a general farm crop of any kind.

So the report forwarded to Washington on

irrigation in Santa Barbara county consisted of two words: “No irrigation.’^ The county contains no arid sandy tracts.

There is sufficient well distributed rain through the so-called “winter”—which a New Englander once spoke of as “a refined

e<lition of au eastern spring”—to produce most wonderful farm crops, and the valleys are threaded with streams from ttie tuountain caSons, so there is no lack of water for irrigating citrus fruits and berries when it is needed.

There are few places in the United States where crops can Ije relied upon with such unerring accuracy as here.

PRODUCTS. What do we raise?

It were much easier to tell what we

do not raise than to enumerate the great variety of crops that are grown successfully.

All cereals and root crops are grown

very profitably.

Thirty-six cwt of beans, 130 bushels of corn, 80 bushels of barley, 400 bushels of potatoes, 40 tons of squashes, 4 tons of hay and 60 tons of beets have been raised per acre in a season, on our best land, but of course the average yield is nob so large.

There is a good market for all farm products, and prices perhaps a little better than in the East.

It is

common thing to cut alfalfa hay eight or nine

times in a year, averaging a ton per acre to the cutting and worth $8 per ton on the ground.

On the 2nd of last June a farmer removed a crop of hay from

piece of land, plowed it and planted it to corn the same day. On the 1st of September he exhibited a hill of corn 15J feet high with six large well formed ears—a fair sample of the crop, the second for the year.

At the last District Pair in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara county took premiums for the best bunch of green dates, 60 pounds; best bunch of bananas; best display apples and pears, (71 and 18 varieties respectively) from one orchard, some of the apples measuring 15| inches in circumference, and some of the pears weighing as high as three pounds and two ounces each; best display of native wines; best exhibit of semi* tropical fruits ; best and largest potatoes, four of them (sweet

potatoes) weighing 43^ pounds, viz: 9, 10, 10| and 13J pounds each; the largest squash, 273J pounds, besides many others. The above is not from hearsay. The writer was in attendance at the fair, as representative from Santa Barbara county and knows whereof he speaks.

At that gigantic undertaking by the counties of Southern California the “Orange Carnival” held in Chicago last April, it was conceded that Santa Barbara county had the largest, most varied and iiiteresting exhibit.

Of our fruits, Rev. Mr. Jackson says in his Barbariana: "One who has lived in a temperate zone may write down the names of all the fruits he ever saw,and then add to the list all those his memory can call out of the books he has read, and in this county he shall be reasonably sure of finding them.

Could it be shown that the primitive Eden bore as many fruits pleasant to the taste, it would add a new pang to the thought of original sin.”

The reader may conclude, after reading the above and an article elsewhere, on the profits of orchards, that all those who engage in farming and fruit raising must get rich. Many do, but not all.

“Do our farmers surrounded by such opportunities ever fail T Yes, some fail, just as men fail in every business.

In

competency, extravagance, ignorance and indolence fail, but our soil and climate do not fail.

If the successful farmer of the Eastern States will bring with him the intelligence, industry and economy, that enable him to provide in summer what will make him comfortable during the long, cold winters, he will prosper and be able to live in comparative ease.

POPULATION. Of the population perhaps one-fifth are of Spanish descent; the remainder are Americans largely from the middle and Atlantic States.

Though they have refrained from the

violent “booming” which prevails in some other parts of the State, the people of Santa Barbara county are not lacking in activity and progressive spirit.

As the railroad advances, new communities are being built up and the surrounding country developed.

When the

“gap” of about 100 miles in the coast line is completed (which will be within the next year) we will then have the main traveled line of the Southern Pacific from the East to San Francisco running the entire length of our county, which will give us closer connection with the outside world and make a most beautiful route, combining as it does, ocean, mountain and valley scenery.

Our county off«'s unlimited opportunities for the indus trious and ambitious, and the soil, climate and examples of well rewarded industry, are encouraging many more settlers to come among us.

In this brief article on the county in general, limited space has made it necessary to pass unnoticed a thousand things that might be interesting and instructive to the reader, but who will, however, learn more of the towns and valleys, their resources, industries and climate in following articles.

Governor of the new province of East Jersey, he seemed well pleased, not only with the country, but also with the climate, and wrote back to England that the '"^weather v)as admirably situated to the humors of mankindf it hardly being for two days in succession of the same character, and that changes they often longed for at home and did not get, there came quickly.

Now, Santa Barbara has no claim to that sort of praise.

Its weather is not “admirably situated to the humors of mankind.

They who delight in snow, ice and sleet, with now and then a blizzard in winter, or in hailstorms, thunder storms and cyclones in summer, cannot be gratified here.

All, or nearly all, our changes, except the diurnal ones, come slowly—so slowly as hardly to be noticed.

Even the

change from summer to winter is not striking, except that the former is rainless and the country brown, while the latter is not, and the fields are green.

Winter for distinction is called the “rainy season,^'but is not for all that a rainy season, as many suppose, but only a season of rain.

On an average there are probably not half as

many rainy days in Santa Barbara during the winter, as in most places east of the Mississippi during the same season; and besides, as a general rule, a great part of the rainfall occurs at night and is followed by bright and pleasant days.

The average annual rainfall is about 17 inches, which is more or less irregularly distributed throughout the season, from October to May. But sometimes rain does occur on nine or ten days in succession, making it, during that time at least, a real rainy season, and giving the country at one time half a year’s rainfall. Such rains, however, are not common, and, when they do occur, are generally followed by long periods of clear weather.

It is a common opinion at the East that California is a

hot place in summer; and so it is in certain parts, for there are deserts in it where the heat is often intense, and other places in the interior where the mercury rises very high in the middle of the day; yet, even there, the heat is by no means so oppress ive as the moist lieat of the Atlantic sea-board. But along the Pacific, and for many miles inland, the temperature is so modified by the ocean, as to be quite comfortable at all seasons, and especially so in summer at Santa Barbara, whose location is such as to be well protected from the strong sea breezes that prevail at San Francisco and at many other points on this coast.

As a winter resort, it is admitted by all who have tried it by a few months’ residence here, and who, by experience in other places, are qualified to judge, to be unequaled.

But if

relatively so pleasant in winter, it is really far more so in summer, when for months together, the weather can be fully relied on never to interfere with anybody’s plans for either pleasure or business.

To convey to persons familiar only with the variable weather at the East, with its extremes of heat and cold, a correct idea of our Santa Barbara climate, which is peculiar even in California, is no easy matter.

Ordinary tables of

temperature fail to do it. They are seldom read, and rarely understood when they are.

Therefore, omitting figures, I give instead, the equivolent month and place on the eastern side of the continent, whose average temperature last year, according to the Signal Service, nearly corresponded with that of the different months at Santa Barbara.

From these comparisons it will be seen that both winter and summer appear to have been left out of our calendar, and so far as it relates to temperature it is no exaggeration to call Our coldest month is the climate here a perpetual spring, warmer than April at Philadelphia, and our warmest one much cooler than June at the same place.

Not only does the thermometer show this spring-like Green character of the climate, but vegetation confirms it. peas and strawberries are perennial, and so are ordinary garden vegetables. Some trees blossom in the fall, others in the winter and spring, while roses and many other flowers are always in bloom.

A few years since. Win. Smith Brown, in an article in Harper^s Magazine on “The Health Resorts of Three Con tinents,” objected to Santa Barbara because it was a windy place, and subject to frequent dust storms and fog.

Where

he could have obtained this information is a puzzle to those who live here, as a careful record of the movement of wind shows the average velocity of it to be 3.3 miles an hour, or only about one-third of that at Philadelphia; proving it to be one of the least windy places in the whole country.

As to dust storms, they do occur occasionally, as in all other places in Southern California, but so far from being frequent, they are really of rare occurrence, so raie that whole summers may pass without even one.

Fogs, except on the ocean, can hardly be said to be common at any season.

differs from that of Santa Barbara, being warmer in summer and cooler in winter, but the heat is dry and not oppressive, cool nights being the rule, while the winter is clear and bracing.

The growth of the valley has been retarded in the

past by the large land grants. These are now being gradually segregated and put on the market. The great Rancho Gailada de los Pinos, or College Grant, is now subdivided and for sale in small holdings and at reasonable figures, by the Santa Ynez Land and Iniprovement Company. The West Coast Land Company has also a large tract for sale near Los Olivos in small farms from three to eighty acres,

exports large quantities of grain of a superlative quality, and fruit trees of all descriptions thrive, The soil is diversified and comprises rich bottom lands, and rolling hills of a gravelly and sandy loam. This latter soil has been found peculiarly adapted for olive culture, an industry which has already assumed the proportions of a speciality. There are now planted over 30,060 olive trees, and a mill for the manufac ture of oil is just completed to handle this season’s crop.

The pioneer orchard belongs to Mr. Ralph R. Selby of Menlo Park, who is electing the mill; adjoining this property He the

orchards of Messrs. Hayne Bros, and Gould, comprising 13,0.00 trees, and up the valley are situated the ranches of Messrs. A. S. and A. M. Boyd, comprising 4000 and 5000 trees respectively. The raisin, wine and prune industries have been successfully exemplified by Mr. Louis Janin, who also has a fine apricot orchard, while Mr. Max Dormer has a thrifty young peach and prune orchard of some 14,000 trees.

There are numerous small orchards of from five to twenty acres scattered through the valley.

The old Santa Ynez Mission adds an air of romance for those interested in the past history of this State, and the Nojoqui Falls and Zaca Lake are charming points for the tourist to visit.

The valley has three .small towns,.Santa Ynez, Ballard,

and Los Olivos, the latter being the terminus of the Pacific Coast Railway, a narrow gauge road running between that place and Port Harford, the shipping point of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company.

The Gaviota Landing is fifteen

miles distant arid is also a favorite shipping point of the farmers.

The valley is reached from the north by the Pacific Coast Railways and from Santa Barbara and the south by stage over tne San Marcos Pass, the latter a drive no tourist can aftbrd to miss, the scenery being magnificent.

There are three schools in the valley, those at Santa Ynez and Los Olivos being large and handsome structures.

The hotel accommodations are also excellent in both the above mentioned towns.

The Los Alamos valley comprises about 40,000 acres of the very richest of agricultural land, and as much more in the hills tributary to it, of excellent graaing land, The valley is situated between two ranges of hills or low mountains that separate the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez valleys, and about twenty-five miles back from the ooast. Although one of the first settled, it has not progressed as rapidly heretofore as other v'alleys of the county, on account of all the land being held in large ranches. Coming from Los Angeles, take the steamer to Port Harford and then the Pacific Coast Railroad, or come by train and stage by the way of Santa Barbara.

The valley, including its upper extension, the Sisquoc, is thirty miles from the foothills to the sea, its width, including the adjacent mesa lands, is from three to ten miles.

Many

tributary cailons break into it through the hills, mostly small but containing rich, protected and generally well watered land, excellently adapted to all kinds of deciduous and citrus fruits.

The main valley has perhaps as varied resources as

any in the State on account of its large extent and consequent differences iil climate and soil.

On the west it opens to the

sea, has a heavier soil and more fog.

This, the Guadalupe

region, is noted throughout the State for its dairying interests.

Many industrious Swiss have settled on the adjacent hills and in the little intervening caflons and have grown rich making butter. The soil of the middle valley is a sandy loam, whilst that of the Sisquoc and the tributary caflons is deeper and richer.

The lower and northern valley, especially the Oso

Flaco side, grows large crops of beans, potatoes, etc., whilst further up wheat and barley are yet grown.

Still the future of the valley lies in its adaptability to fruit culture, in the parts best adapted for the special kinds.

One hundred thousand trees have been set out within the last few years, and hardly an appreciable area seems as yet under cultivation. Prunes, apricots and walnuts are the main output so far, though other fruits such as apples, pears, peaches and grapes do well. Citrus fruits require irrigation.

No general plan of irrigation has yet been introduced; how ever, where locally irrigated the lemon and orange equal any grown elsewhere.

Prices of fruit land are still low compared with elsewhere, for the reason that the valley is not yet in direct connection with the Southern Pacific. The right-of-way, however, for the Southern Pacific has been secured, and the railroad will

soon be here.

The town of Santa Maria lies near the center of the valley, and as indicated, is on the line of the narrow gauge— the Pacific Coast Railway.

It is an enterprising village of

about 800 inhabitants, who are noted for their energy, pluck and ability to pull together.

It has fine schools and the requisite number of churches to insure the correct moral tendency of the people; good hotels, a substantial bank and several good general and special merchandise stores and a good steam flour and feed mill, etc., etc.

The climate is equable and very healthful.

A cannery is the latest enterprise; it is to be put up the coming season.

The town and valley are yet comparatively in their infancy, but the tendencies all point to a future which shall equal many and surpass some of the older and better known L. E. Blociiman. valleys of the State.

This colony, located in the western portion of Santa Barbara county on the Ranchos Lompoc and Mission Vieja, comprising an area of about forty-seven thousand acres, was fouiided in che fall of 1874.

The properties were purchased of the late VV^, W. Hollister and Albert and Thomas B. Dibblee, for the sum of 8500,000.

The colonists took formal possession in the fall and winter of 1874 to the number of a thousand or more, and

have steadily increased in numbers until this vast area is occupied by over two thousand population, with all the modern conveniences such as telegraph, daily mails, two newspapers, six churches, one bank, a high school, and a firstclass public school with five teachers.

The town o£ Lompoc, a corporation, has a populatiorl estimated at fifteen hundred and rapidly growing, and with the certainty of railroad facilities within the coming year' great impetus is given to industries in all quarters.

There are forty odd business houses and places in ther town already with ample opportunity for more.

The Lompoc valley comprises an area of 13,000 acres of as choice soil as can be found anywhere, and adapted, without irrigation, to the production of all kinds of cereals, vegetables and deciduous fruits.

well, while the peach, apricot, cherry, plum, prune and quince do fairly well. abundance also.

The profits of products at times are simply marvelous.

In 1880, Mr. I. M. Clark and others cleared a net profit of $300 per acre on onions and $200 on potatoes, and the profits of orchards planted to apples have exceeded these sums, and the fruit from our section has always taken the first premium at all fairs at which it was exhibited, not excepting the New Orleans Exposition.

This portion of Southern California is covered by large unsegregated ranches, still devoted to stock raising, which the advent of the railroad now in process of construction will cause to be subdivided and sold in homestead tracts. There are over 200,000 acres of land, fully one-half choice for agriculture and fruit growing, tributary to the Lompoc.

Purissima ranchos, owned largely by John H. Wise, with 28,000 acres; the Jesus Maria rancho, owned principally by Benjamin Burton, with 48,000 acres; the Sal si Puedes, owned by the estate of W. W. Hollister, of 7,000 acres; the La Espada rancho of 14,000 acres, and from 30,000 to 50,000 acres of government land, mostly already occupied by settlers.

When these great estates fall, as they soon must, under the dominion of agriculture, homes for ten thousand population will be afforded, with their chief center of business the town of Lompoc.

With these adjuncts of success ready fof utiliza

tion, and with a world of people seeking homes in the finest and most equable section of the Pacific Coast, what is to hinder our town from becoming the chief city between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, with a population of 8,000 or 10,000, located as it is just midway between those two already famous cities.

We must not fail to speak of the dairy and stock interest, to which about one-half of this vast area must inevitably be devoted.

The San Julian rancho is now grazing over 6,000

graded cattle and 40,000 sheep.

’Tis said by experienced

stockmen that no other like area of natural grasses in all the State can do as well.

This condition is peculiar to the

counties of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo bordering the coast where the Spring and Summer fogs supply the need of rain, which leaves the interior outside the irrigable belt, so dry and arid.

To this section, then, we invite the attention of home seekers, feeling certain that no other portion of the Pacific Coast offers greater inducements for profitable investment.

If ’tis health and climate you desire and seek, no other sec tion of the Pacific Coast is so singularly free from extremes of heat and cold or so completely exempt from conditions that in the arid valleys create malaria and enervation,

could not be otherwise with the ocean breezes sweeping gently inland throughout the entire round of seasons.

The city of Santa Barbara has an

ideal situation on a .gentle slope between stately mountains and calm sea. The mountains, that form the background to this unsurpassed landscape, 3000 to 4000 feet high, do not rise abruptly, but are set off by undulating courses of the foot hills and the broad, eveti sweep of mesas or table lands.

In the midst of the rain in the winter their summits are sometimes tipped with sriosv, but whether rugged and grey as in summer and autumn or green and velvety, as h\ winter and spring, they are always beautiful.

The ocean, unvexed

by .storms, smooth and calm, stretches away to the dim, hazy outlines of the islands.

Whichever way the eye turns, it meets only an endless vista of calm, inspiring beauty.

Tliirty years ago, when the rest of Southern California wms a forgotten corner of the world, Santa Barbara was already famous for its climate and its scenery

of quaint red tiled adobe buildings, some of them occupied by the civilized Indians, and the more pretentious by the Castiliaa owners of the ranches of the surrounding country.

Gradually the Americans crept in—a few before the annex ation,many afterwards—untilthey outnumbered theSpaniards, and the sleepy, shiftless village of the past, became the thrifty, well kept city of to-day.

The climate of Siinta Barbara valley is remarkable for its absence of rudeness^ for its mildness, its evenness. Snow blockades, blizzards, thunder-storms, cyclcmes, sun-stroke, scorching days and sultry nights are unknown.

Malarial

fevers and epidemics have never Ixien experienced, and dreaded consumption is here robbed of half its horrors, if not cured.

It is for our climate that the invalid and tourist come, so no wonder we commend it.

We have but two seasons—Summer and Winter, Winter is a misnomer.

It is the prettiest part of the year—when we

have our rains, and the hills are clothed in green, and the landscape is aflame with the bright colors of the wild flowers; when the birds sing their sweetest songs, and picnic parties roam the grassy hills, explore wooded canons and lunch by the music of some mountain brook. Our winter is not a season of protracted rains as some suppose it to be. We sometimes have two or three heavy rains, between November and April, lasting one, two or three days, and occasionally even longer; but it generally comes in showers, and at night, and then clears oli’ bright and warm during the day, so that we have but ten or twelve days during the year tliat could be called rainy days and, indeed not more than twenty when the invalid cannot walk, ride or drive in the open air without

injury.

The day on which this is written, the twelfth of January, is an average Santa Birbara winter day.

open, I see ever-blooming gardens in every direction and hear the birds singing in the warm sunshine. Through my north window I see the foot-hills in their coat of verdure, while through my south window I see the grand old Pacidc dotted with the Channel Island, and the balmy sea breeze brings with it the murmur of the waves as they break upon the hard s»nd of the broad beach a mile.a way.

In the gardens in the imme*

diate vicinity can be found lilies, heliotropes, fuchsias, carna tions and fifty other rare and l>eautiful flowers; three hundred varieties of roses; almond trees with their snowy blossoms; and orange and lemon trees laden with their golden fruit. A stroll to the canofis would reveal myriads of delicately colored wild flowers, and the farmers could be seen turning the rich soil making ready for planting.

By going to the beach, the

tourist might be seen takin'i a plunge in the rolling surf; ladies clotlied in their summer gowns gathering sea moss; and the nursery maid watching her little charges frolic in the sand.

Would our friends in the East not gladly exchange their fields of snow, base-burners and furs for a winter day like

this?

Our summer is about seven months in duration—from May to December—and is called the dry season, owing to the absence of rain.

The grass dries up and the country roads

become more or less dusty, according to the nature of the soil.

The scarcity of high winds make this less objectionable than it would be otherwise. We do not claim to have a total absence of wind, h\it \ve do claim that the average velocity of the wind here is less than anywhere in the civilized world, where a record is kept.

The summer season is when hunting, fishing and camping excursions are so popular.

The bright^

sunny days continue for weeks and weeks, until they become monotonous.

Then there may be a few foggy days, and we

welcome the change.

Our fogs generally come at night and

vanish before the I’ays of the etirly morning sun; but occasionall/they remain all day as fog clouds, high above the valleys —obscuring the mountain tops.

If the day should prove a

little warm, there is always the refreshingsea breeze to temper it.

The nights are always cooly requiring about the same bed

covering, and making refreshing sleep possible, every night inthe year. As the eastern visitor finds our winter a refuge from his snowbanks and blizzards, so he will find our summer a refuge from his thunder storms,scorching days, sultry nights, hydrophoebia, sunstroke and fevers.

The city of Santa Barb-ara contains about 7,000 people, mostly from the Western and Atlantic Stiites. She has shared exceptionally well in the population she has gathered.

Her reputation as a city of refinement and culture is wide spread.

The outlying districts, settled in small vilja tracts, prac tically make the number much larger, aud in the course of the winter it is visited by thousands of tourists, wliich causes it to present a more metropolitan aspect than many cities four times its size. During the summer months, come the visitors from San Francisco and the interior of the State,so at no time of the year is Santa Barbara lonesome Horseback riding, driving among the canofis, and getting the views from the foot-hills, or merely dreaming away the hours in the calm enjoyment of tlie delicate atmosphere, the visitor experiences no difficulty in passing the time.

Horselmck riding is a most popular amusement. Every one rides—the natives because it has been the custom here from time immemorial, and the visitors because the experience is a delightful one.

When the tide is out, the beach is the favorite “hippo drome;” and on clear, beautiful mornings, which means nearly every morning, a race on its hard, smooth floor, with the salt breeze blowing deep into one's lungs, is worth a good many bottles of cod liver oil to the convalescent.

It is a city of charming homes, rehned beautiful gardens.

rlie modest cottage of the mechanic, and the more pretentious residence of the merchant to the elegant and costly villa of the capitalist, who, tired of the constant battle of business life, lias come here to establish a new home and enjoy his remaining days in restful leisure.

Every modest dwelling is over run with roses or covered with clambering vines, or encompassed with trees and tropical foliage, and blooming shrubs from every quarter of the globe. are

Many of the streets, sloping gently toward the ocean,

bordered with the graceful pepper

tree, the elegant

grevillia, and the towering eucalyptus.

The cost of living here compares favorably with other places. A person economically inclined can live in Santa Barbara, perhaps at less cost than anywhere in the United States.

State street, the principal street, is one of the most magnificent thoroughfares on the continent. It is paved with bituminous rock, mined near the city, and is as smooth as a floor for a distance of two miles back from the beach.

Stearns’ wliarf at the foot of State street, is a commodi ous structure, and extends nearly half a mile into one of the most perfect harbors on the coast, where the largest ocean steamers land in perfect safety, in stormy weather, when it would be impossible in many of the harbors of the coast. Just east of Stearns’ wharf and connecting with it at the outer end is the railroad wharf.

Here, car and ship come together, giving us most excellent shipping facilities. The Southern Pacific Company runs two trains daily, each way, from San

Erancisco and Los Angeles that connect with all trains over their Central Pacific and Sunset routes. The Pacific Coast Steamship Company’s magnificent steamers land passengers and freight from the nortu and south, daily.

The Santa Fe

Company also maintain a general office here.

Although we

are not on their line, they ticket passengers and bill freight direct to Santa Barbara over all their roads.

Street car lines extend along the beach to the bath houses, through the business center and various portions of the residence part of town and to the old mission.

The city is now supplied with good, pure water from Mission Canon:

The Mountain Water Company is developing

a new supply by tunnelling into the mountain which will give the city an abundance for all purposes at reasonable cost.

The city is abundantly supplied with electric lights aiid the principal business and residence streets are sewered.

The Sunset Telephone Company have their lines extending to all parts of the city and we are connected by a long distance telephone system with all the larger cities California.

The most notable of the buildings is the grand old Mission, situated at the top of the beautiful slope on wnich the city is built, about two miles back from the ocean. In the towers of solid masonry, still swing the ancient bells, whose chimes have called the good gray friars of St. Francis to worship for 106 years.

A source of much pride to the citizens of Santa Barbara, is their public library and building, of which a city many times our proportions might well be proud. There are eleven church edifices, some of them of beautiful architecture and handsomely finished.

The services of all are well attended.

Four splendid modern school buildings, well filled with “young ideas” requiring the services of twenty-six pedagogues.

the Santa Barbara Business College, all of high standard, besides several private schools and a well patronized public kindergarten.

An Opera House with a seating capacity of 1,200 accommo dates the play-loving citizens.

There are three banks with a

combined capital of $300,000; there are also three newspapers, the Herald, Independent and the Morning Press. 'I’he last two are dailies, publishing the Associated Press dispatches.

We hav^e prosperous lodges of all the secret societies, well equipped clubs for gentlemen, a choral society, nourishing Y. M. 0. A. and W. 0. T. U. organizations, Agricultural Association pavillion and race course, Horticultural society.

Natural History society, with unique quarters in an old historical tile roofed adobe building, where they have a splendid collection that never fails to interest and instruct the visitor; Arlington Jockey Club, composed in most part of tourists, have an elegantly furnished club house, where they receive their friends once a week, an Orchestra Club that numbers among its members many prominent society ladies and gentlemen.

They have a handsome suite of parlors and

a concert hall, where they entertain their friends.

On the twenty-sixth of last month a proposition was carried by an overwhelming majority, to bond the city for $70,000 for the purpose of constructing a boulevard to extend nearly two miles along the beach and around Castle Rock to the beach beyond.

It will be paved with bituminous rock,

and connecting with State street, as it will, will make a drive and promenade that will rival any in the country.

Among the contemplated improvements, is an electric railway, that will connect the Southern Pacific hotel property, four miles west of town, Arlington Heights, a mile north, the Montecito valley and the Hot Springs with the city, which will afford a ride that can’t be equaled in all California for beautiful scenery and commanding views.

SANTA BAEBARA.

Nature has been so generous with Santa Barbara, and her attractions and advantages are so numerous that the whole truth may be told. The objections, if there are any, which a new comer might find, are forgotten after a short residence.

As someone has uniquely expressed it,“they amount to as much as a freckle on the face of a young lady who is delightful and beautiful notwithstanding.”

All that has been said about the climate, etc., of Santa Barbar City, is essentially true of its suburbs lying in the Santa Barbara Valley, therefore a brief discription of their location, improvements, etc., will be sufficient.

MONTECITO. The Montecito Valley, the pride of Santa Barbara, lies east of the town, over a low range of hills, and is accessible by several roads, all of them picturesque, and affording a fine view of ocean and mountain. Its longer diraention, parallel with the coast, is about seven miles, while the distance from mountain to shore varies from one to two miles. It would be hard to fancy a spot more charming than Montecito. spots indeed

From the base

of the mountains the valley slopes to the ocean, with its groves of oak, orange orchards, vineyards, open fields and villa homes, in the midst of luxuriant foliage. Montecito has attracted a most desirable class of home seekers who have added much to its natural beauty.

A All the field and orchard crops grow to perfection, lemon is produced here, that on account of its excellence, has a market of its Own.

celebrated Hot Sulphur Springs, and the Big Grape-vine, supposed to be the largest in the world.

Considering its great natural beauty, its pre-eminent charm of climate throughout the year, its singular exemption from contagious diseases, and its many out-door attractions, Montecito Valley is destined to become a great sanitarium, not only for our county, but for the world.

CAKPINTERIA. The Oarpinteria valley lies ten miles east of Santa Barbara, and like Montecito, its greatest dimension is parallel with the coast. It is about nine miles long, from Ortega Hill that separates it from the Montecito valley on the west, to the Rincon mountain on the east, and slopes back four or five miles from the ocean to the crescent shaped mountains that wall it in on the north. It contains about 8,000 or 10,000 acres of the richest and most productive soil in the world.

Oarpinteria has done much toward securing for the Santa Barbara valley its enviable reputation for natural advantages of climate, scenery and productive resources.

The population

is perhaps 1,000. The village of Oarpinteria is situated about the center of the valley, near the beach and on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It has several stores, shops, etc., a good hotel, a town hall, four churches, a splendid school building, a depot and a wharf.

Its citizens are hospitable and cultured

and are always pleased to show the stranger the wonders soil and climate work, which must be seen to be appreciated.

SUMMERLANB. Between the Montecito and Oarpinteria valleys, on a gently sloping mesa, or table-land, is the new town of Summerland.

It is a Spiritualist colony and was founded about three years

SANTA BARBARA.

It has grown steadily ever since and now has about

sixty neat cottages and residences, a town hall, a public library and building, a newspaper, two hotels, a livery stable, several stores, shops, etc.

An annual camp meeting is held here and

is attended by many prominent Spiritualists from all parts of the country.

The town is supplied with pure water from the

mountain back of it.

Natural gas is had for the boring, and

is used for fuel and lighting.

The excellent facilities for

shipping both by land or water, and the natural gas for fuel, are great inducements for manufacturing.

GOLETA. The Goleta valley, celebrated for its mammoth squashes and beets, its walnut groves and pampas fields, lies seven miles west of the city. It is a veritable garden. Its orchards, vineyards, fields of graceful callas, veri-colored roses and waving pampas plumes have called forth many an exclamation of surprise from Eastern visitors.

This pamphlet would be

exhausted in an attempt to fully describe this most productive and picturesque spot, alone.

The village is situated about

the center of the valley, where are a store, market, blacksmith shop, a creamery, a large school building and one of the best halls in the county. Half a mile west is a pretty depot surrounded by palms, bananas and all kinds of fiowers. Five miles west,is a famous ranch, the home of Mr. Ellwood Cooper.

Here are the pioneer olive groves where the visitor may see the pure olive oil pressed from the fruit.

battle of flowers, was given at the time of the Wsit of Presi dent Harrison to Santa Barbara in April, 1891. The program for the festival this year includes five days and will surpass in beauty and glory that of last year, TTie annual visit of the Goddess Flora to Santa Barbara is destined to rival in fame the “Batailie des Fleurs” at ^vTice, or the “Mardi Gras” at New Orleans.

MRS. HARRISON S OPINION.

After the return of the presidential party to Washington last year, Mrs. Harrison wrote to one of our citizens requesting photographs of the floral procession and battle of flowers.

In acknowledging the receipt of them Mrs. Harrison wrote as follows: “It needs no photographs to hold your lovely place in our memories, but it is very pleasant to have them to show to our friends what they do in that ‘Land of Flowers.’ Whenever Santa Barbara is mentioned you would be gratified to hear the enthusiasm which follows. I can assure you that if they intended to give us pleasure, they more than succeeded.

California did everything that was possible for our pleasure and we fully appreciate the efforts of the kind hearts and busy hands that contributed to our happiness, but Santa Barbara was the most refined and unique affair I ever saw. I think the people must be unusually cultivated and charming.

^0t©r Santa Barbara is well supplied with good hotels and private boarding houses. The celebrated Arlington, is the most capacious, having accommodations for 300 guests, and is strictly first-class, It is surrounded by emerald lawns and stately palms and luxuriant foliage.

Situated near the upper end of State street, it affords an excellent view of mountain and ocean. The fame of the Arlington is as widespread as that of Santa Barbara.

SANTA BARBARA.

One block from the Arlington is the San Marcos with accommodations for 100 guests.

Its appointments are first-

class and charges moderate. Like the Arlington it has spacious lawns, with palms, live oak and other trees.

It is very home

like and its guests never fail to praise it.

The popular Commercial, is situated in the business part of the city and is the business man’s hotel.

It is first-class in

its management and can accommodate about 200 guests.

Besides the above, there is the New Morris, a family hotel, and several excellent restaurants.

Those who prefer

private

boarding houses will find several that are first-class.

We also have a Cottage Hospital where invalids can have all the comforts of home life. It is in charge of a Board of lady managers, who are composed of some of the most promi nent ladies of our city.

EDITOR’S NOTE This pamphlet, which is from the library of Mr. Harold Chase and which is reproduced here with his permission, was published by the Board of Supervisors of Santa Barbara County in 1893. It gives so clearly the viewpoint of Santa Barbarans of three-quarters of a century ago that its historical importance is to be seen at a glance. We present it to our members as “Oc casional Papers, Number Two”. The first one was the manifest of a shipment of goods from the Philippine Islands to Fr. Junipero Serra that was published in the summer of 1961.
