FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

At 40 years old, one can start to worry about showing signs of age. In our culture (and specifically in California), people race to beat the clock with specialty creams, Botox, or even a very faint nip and tuck to counterbalance the years. As our beautiful publication celebrated its fourth decade this summer, it was time to stare deep in the mirror and ask, “Is it time for a refresh?” And indeed it was! We have loved the look we've had for the past 15 years but want to stay current and modern. With that realization, we have made some slight changes—and a sleeker size—that add up to a big bang! A huge thanks to our wonderful team (many of whom have been here for the last 15 years) and to our consulting creative director, James Timmins, for the vision he brought to this project. With the new direction, we needed a strong cover, and I can’t think of a more beautiful family to feature in this first issue of our new look than Nacho Figueras and Delfina Blaquier (“Coast to Coast,” page 128). The polo power couple is ready to take on the world with many new exciting lifestyle ventures while traveling between Argentina and Santa Barbara. The twosome is definitely adding more glamour to the already stunning landscape of our city. Speaking of our town, people the world over want to export a piece of our American Riviera to their neck of the woods. Much like Palm Beach, Aspen, or the Hamptons, the very mention of Santa Barbara transports people. With that in mind, many companies are branding their product lines with the evocation of our sun, sand, and style. In our feature “Santa Barbara, Inc.” (page 160), we explore what big business—and even Hollywood— wants to tap into. The original John Woolf-designed home of Simon and Karen Fry (“Regency Redux,” page 140) is a gorgeous example of mixing old with new. The recently renovated abode nods to its illustrious cinematic past—Woolf’s iconic Hollywood Regency flair—while infusing collected antiques with a contemporary art collection and a lust-worthy, only-in-Santa Barbara view. And if you are going to lust after something, the jewels on display in “Glass Menagerie” (page 150) are stunning ones to start with. Shot by fine art photographer Lindsey Ross using 100-year-old cameras (that she personally rebuilt), our fashion feature captures the beauty of the bauble. It is a haunting story that captures so much more than just a flash in the pan. And doesn’t that sum up our city (and our redesign for that matter)? Not just a onehit wonder, our town is historic in its own right. It is legendary! Our job at Santa Barbara Magazine is to share all of its magic and celebrate it within every (newly revamped) issue. Here’s to the next four decades in our Garden of Eden....

Russ Spencer “When you die, your soul rises out of your body and immediately goes to Santa Barbara. So I figured, Why wait? “Since we usually spend long hours in photo studios, we loved the chance to style outdoors,” say this duo who dressed Nacho Figueras and his wife, Delfina, for “Coast to Coast,” (page 128). “Watching them with the horses was an amazing experience in itself. Plus, being on the beach—it was a dream shoot!” S.B. MUST DOs Guacamole and a margarita at Cava. • The Outpost at the Goodland Hotel for its great atmosphere. • Visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo.

“One of the great privileges of photographing people is meeting and working with personalities like Delfina Blaquier and Nacho Figueras,” says the Carpinteria-based photographer who shot our cover and “Coast to Coast” (page 128). “They were elegant, athletic, and effortless in sharing their joie de vivre throughout the day.” S.B. “Hanging out with David was like experiencing a freshly minted hybrid human—a surfer with an easygoing manner but a thoroughly urban ability to converse on film, classical music, and travel,” says this local writer who got to know the Santa Barbara Symphony’s new executive director for “In Tune” (page 105). “Santa Barbara for me is an authentic slice of Old World Europe in California,” says our consulting creative director who lent us his eye in designing our new look. Timmins, originally from England via Milan and New York, came on board as art director at our sister publication, C, this year. “With epic landscapes and stunning architecture, the city has a real Mediterranean charm.” S.B. “The images reminded me of photos of Ganna Walska. The vintage process, location, and styling triggered my visual memory to what took place nearly a century ago in Santa Barbara,” says the photographer who shot “Glass Menagerie” (page 150). “This is what I love about working in historical photographic processes: Their aesthetic acts as a catalyst for memory to create the story as well as a sense of connection to the past.” S.B. We’ve been wanting to work with photographer Lindsey Ross on a fashion story (“Glass Menagerie,” page 150) for a long time. Her archetypal tintype portraits are timeless, and to conjure a contemporary editorial with this authentic colloidal process was a true creative gift. Ross developed each individual glass plate of model Catrina Stella on set in her pop-up darkroom, allowing our team to stitch together the story right in front of our eyes. Zest for Life

History by the Glass

The wine at Standing Sun Winery’s downtown BODEGA is being served with a side of history. One of the newest tasting rooms in town, the bodega (Spanish for “winery”) is housed in what was once the wine cellar inside Casa de la Guerra. In the mid-1800s, the casa was the home of the Presidio’s fifth comandante, José de la Guerra, as well as a social and cultural epicenter. It’s been a museum run by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation for decades, with the old cellar used for little more than storage. The trust approached Standing Sun Winery’s John Wright as much for his skill in winemaking as his expertise in restoration. With myriad degrees in historic preservation from the University of Maryland, Wright spent years refurbishing old farmhouses along the East Coast. He and his wife, Emmy-winning soap opera star Laura Wright, moved to Santa Ynez in 2007, and a career shift to winemaking soon followed. The Bodega is a chance for Wright to return the quaint 400-square-foot adobe room to its 19thcentury roots. But “this is not a renovation,” he insists. He’s using what’s already there—paintings are hung from existing holes in the walls, for example—and his only decor is free-standing pieces such as bar stools, a leather couch, and barrels as tables. Old charm prevails from the hand-thatched ceiling to the worn wooden floors. Bodega guests can taste six Standing Sun wines for $15 and can also purchase Wright’s limitededition Wine Art Music project (from $100), a two-bottle gift box that includes original lyrics by Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz and label art by renowned painter Felipe Molina. 15 E. Boasting an array of dishes using fruits, CITRUS: SWEET AND SAVORY SUN-KISSED RECIPES ($19.99, Ten Speed Press, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-6826787, chaucersbooks.com) is the new cookbook by Valerie Aikman-Smith and Victoria Pearson. Flavors from lemons, limes, and oranges are preserved in recipes such as honey oranges with lavender flowers. The idea for the book stemmed from Aikman-Smith’s childhood memories. “One of the highlights of Christmas was finding a tangerine at the bottom of my stocking—a magical treat,” she says. Paired with Ojai-based Pearson’s signature photography, Citrus explores the ingredient through inventive recipes. B I N N G U Y E N

Jon Baird, Kevin Costner, and Rick Ross.

Storytellers

Pssst...

“Dream it and they will come…” seems to be actor/director/now author Kevin Costner’s credo. In collaboration with Jon Baird and illustrator Rick Ross, Academy Award-winning Costner journeys into yet another cinematic medium with THE EXPLORER’S GUILD ($29.99, Atria Books, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-682-6787, chaucersbooks.com), a 700-plus-page hardcover tome recalling adventure/mystery classics such as Jules Verne’s Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The imaginative read appeals to all ages, as Costner, a father of three young children, adds, “as a storyteller and filmmaker, I am intrigued by the inherent resourcefulness and wit embodied in these characters.” With a reputation for epic projects, we predict his next Hollywood blockbuster billboard to say: “The Explorer’s Guild…Coming Soon.” G . T .

As part of the creative team behind the New Age book empire The Secret, writer Skye Byrne and illustrator Nic George have teamed up for their first children’s story—THE POWER OF HENRY’S IMAGINATION ($17.99, Simon and Schuster). “I love the anticipation created with the words, ‘And so Henry began to imagine...,’” says George. “I can really feel how parents, on their second reading of the book, will add a little performance to the delivery of these words, knowing the excitement coming on the following pages.” Look for readings with the authors at area bookstores and grab a copy, your kids, and curl up. Design DETOUR

Inside a renovated Los Olivos barn is the refreshing ATMOSPHERE ATELIER . Owner and designer Collette Kaplan had a vision for a more sophisticated “valley-style” shop filled with found objects, classic furniture, designer fabrics, custom pillows, and artisanal accessories—vowing nothing to be mass produced. “When I search for treasures to bring into the store, I don’t want to see them everywhere, I want them to be special or one-of-a-kind,” Kaplan says. “My shop is tiny and I buy thin. That means I have to keep moving and changing, but I like that.” 2933 Grand Ave., Ste. B, Los Olivos, 805-693-1200. J . B . K .

Surf, skate, fashion, and art worlds collide.... BOOMART , boom-art.com, and Euro surf giant UWL have joined forces in creating limited-edition surfboards ($2,140, pictured above) and skate decks (from $202) featuring the works of Gustav Klimt and Jan Davidsz de Heem, while EMILIO PUCCI ’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection includes an exclusive line of professional street skateboards decked out with the Italian designer’s signature patterns. Swing KIDS

Here’s proof that Dad plus garage time pays off. One afternoon, Sean Malarkey disassembled a dusty skateboard in his Santa Barbara garage and three hours later, came up with a cool distraction that was instantly approved by his daughters Mia, 11, and Isabel, 6. The next day, he upgraded the materials to be safer and stronger with a sturdier board and rope tough enough to hold an elephant and the SK8SWING ($97) was born. “Kids are attracted to it not only because it looks fun—but it also goes against convention,” he says. “It encourages them to stand up and swing, something they’re normally advised against.” J . The newly opened TRIM SHOP .

Ryan Lovelace’s TRIM SHOP not only serves as a shop for his custom surfboards (from $775) that all feature unique fabric inlays and color work but also True Ames fins, surf films, apparel, and books. The transition to storefront has been a long-term goal. “I was talking about the idea with a friend, and he asked me, ‘Why not now?’” Lovelace remembers. “It struck a chord, and my girlfriend, Katie McLean, and I started hunting for places.” The shop itself—decorated with local art and Santa Barbara history—feels more like a living room than a store. “The hardest thing so far has been keeping surfboards on the shelves,” he says. 27 Parker Way, Santa Barbara. FOR those girls ABOUT to ROCK

They say it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock ‘n’ roll, but G IR LS R O C K SB specializes in giving local girls a little help up through year-round classes and workshops as well as summer programs such as day camp and Amplify sleep-away camp. Girls learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform their own music, make band merch, and more in an empowering environment with one simple caveat—no boys allowed. One of the 10 weekly programs takes the form of a 13-week after-school rock band where participants form a band, write an original song, participate in workshops, record in a studio (a partnership with Notes for Notes

[see “And For the Boys”]), and perform at a live showcase for sold-out crowds where celebrities like Pink have been spotted on occasion. Girls Rock SB also offers photography and filmmaking programs and can curate custom home parties or classes. “I was born and raised in Santa Barbara,” says founder Jen Baron. “I started Girls Rock SB to create a space where girls could feel empowered to find their voice, collaborate among peers, know that they are enough in all that they do, and generally rock out.” Don’t miss the end-ofthe-year fund-raiser at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club, sohosb.com, on December 13 at 6 pm. Generational GAP

Designer AMBER SAKAI comes from a family that has kept a black book on Santa Barbara since the late 1700s, beginning with her fifth greatgrandfather, José Canuta Guevara, who was born in Santa Barbara at the Presidio, and his wife Maria Eusebia Crisanta Lugo. The stunning jet-setter finds time to balance her career and family and remains connected to her childhood by visiting relatives in Ojai who have lived there for decades. “Ojai is my foundation of influence—its art, architecture, and landscapes— that is always present in my inspiration for each collection,” she says. BEAUTY

Winter WISH LIST

Let’s face it, winter in Santa Barbara is not a beauty emergency. But the change of season still calls for a switch up, and JOUER ’s founder and creative director Christina Zilber has a few tricks up her stylish sleeves. “I love to explore the architecture, beaches, and unique style of Santa Barbara; the easy pace and rhythm is so refreshing,” Zilber says. “Every inch of Alchemy Wellness Spa is beautiful and the treatments are wonderful. I love the Shake & Bake (TheraVibe and infrared sauna) and then going to the cafe for the Alchemy salad in a big beautiful bowl—I walk out feeling amazing.” Between dishing about her other faves—skinny margaritas at Carlito’s and shopping at Diani and Maison K—Zilber shares her seasonal beauty secrets. Christina’s BEAUTY TIPS

1

Between rainy days, Santa Ana winds, and central heat, skin takes a beating during the winter months. A light face oil is just the prescription for perfectly hydrated skin. Jouer’s DAILY REPAIR TREATMENT OIL ($48) contains plant-based oils to quench and rejuvenate.

2

When your skin is feeling the winter blues, nothing beats highlighter to instantly illuminate cheekbones and brighten the eyes. Jouer’s HIGHLIGHTER ($22) in Tiare, a golden shimmer that blends into the skin for a seamless, lit-from-within glow.

3

Holiday parties mean stepping up your makeup game. The easiest way to go from day to night is with a smoky eye, and Jouer’s CREME EYESHADOW CRAYONS ($24) glide on and

smudge effortlessly.

Montecito-based makeup artist SHANIE CROSBIE —who made our “Glass Menagerie” (page 150) model even more gorgeous—says the biggest trend for this season is the no-makeup makeup look. “This year, we’ll see fresh-faced, barely there beauty that’s almost undone—the just-rolled-out-of-bed kind of look.” Crosbie’s tips for a natural, polished look include enzyme masks or professional peels for resurfacing to add a glow back to the skin, as well as spritzers and serums for hydration. For makeup, matte skin with enhanced eyes and deep lips are popping up throughout the holidays well into 2016. “Naturally enhanced, full-looking brows with a bit of concealer just applied where needed and a black currant lipstick or stain is very modern and minimalistic,” she says. the bedroom.

In her new book, HOME ($35, Hachette, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-682-6787, chaucersbooks.com), ELLEN DEGENERES talks about her passion for design, featuring seven of her own homes. The talk-show host, who also launched a line of home furnishings called ED and has a design show, Ellen’s Design Challenge, on HGTV, professed her love of interior design at age 13 and has since become a serial renovator. However, her latest project—this Italian-inspired villa in Montecito, which she shares with her wife, Portia de Rossi— has been called their “forever home.” With rustic stone walls and 13 acres of dreamy, droughttolerant landscaping, the home was previously owned by interior designer John Saladino. Now, the couple has adorned the farmhouse with collected antiques and accessories they’ve picked up locally at Lucca Antiques and Michael Haskell Antiques. “My first visit to Santa Barbara was around 1990. I stayed at the San Ysidro Ranch,” she says. “I would continue to go back up there for weekend retreats because it was the most relaxing place. So close to L.A. and yet felt a million miles away. The air was different. The light was different. The smells were different—in a good way. “Having those beautiful mountains and the ocean in such close proximity was like a magical paradise. I performed stand-up at the Arlington Theatre in 2001, and I told that audience I was going to live there someday. I kept my word. I also told them that one day I’d drive a car powered entirely by peanut butter, but I’m sorry to say I haven’t been able to follow through on that yet.” ●

Rustic LUXE

When it comes to winter entertaining, lifestyle expert JENNI KAYNE creates a comfortable vibe that’s both beautiful and manageable. “I find beauty in an imperfect table setting,” says Kayne. “It's easy to get caught up in every detail when you're hosting a big gathering, but oftentimes what might seem like imperfect elements come together to create a more natural and beautiful tablescape.” Here are her tips for layering a little holiday magic into the home. >>

GET THE LOOK With Jenni Kayne

Incorporate lots of GREENERY . On this particular table, I used a handmade garland mixed with hemlock, spruce, and Carolina cedar for more of a California feel. When working with greens, it’s fun to use plants with different textures to create a lot of dimensions on a table. Remember to work with the natural shape and direction of the greens for an effortless-looking centerpiece. LAYER PLATES with different colors and textures

for a simple look that’s easy to replicate. I like to include a singular decoration, like a pinecone or a sprig of green, on a linen napkin to add an interesting element to the place setting.

CANDLES are my favorite way to add a

festive and romantic feel to any table. For this event, vintage silver candleholders created an amazingly imperfect effect. The different heights of the candles added a whimsical element.

I’m a big fan of using SHEEPSKINS in my space, whether by the fire in the living room or draped across the dining room chairs. They add warmth and soften the decor of any room.

Noteworthy

Since settling into their new downtown digs, the minds behind FOLIO PRESS & PAPERIE and WOOTTON PRINTING are running both a busy storefront and in-house letterpress line. Owners Marlene and Frank Bucy have the front stocked with gifts, candles, tabletop decor, jams, jewelry, and more. But the real gem is the expanding paper business, now gearing up for holiday cards and coasters, which are designed and printed on-site. If you’re thinking of throwing a sophisticated soiree, Marlene advises to set the mood and send locally designed and letterpress-printed invitations (cotton paper is hot right now), which standout for their touch and beauty. 301 Motor Way, Santa Barbara, 805-966-1010.

DEPTH of FIELD Every human emotion can find a place in photography, and this universal visual language is rarely more evident than in many of the scenes depicted in the SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF ART ’s latest exhibition “Looking In, Looking Out: Latin American Photography.” On view October 18 to February 14, images reveal a sense of nostalgia between photographer and homeland. In lieu of a survey of works from every country, the exhibition gives outsiders a glimpse into Latin America through images that offer singular views suggesting both the extreme unity and vast diversity of the region. Through the lenses of both iconic and emerging photographers from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, and Mexico, these 47 works produced after the 1930s—displayed together for the first time— engage viewers with the people, political propaganda,

social perspectives, history, and future of the region. This is also the final exhibition by the late Karen Sinsheimer, who served as curator of photography for 25 years, and just one example of her vision for a variety of genres and her trendsetting curation. “Her knowledge of visual language through photography was in-depth and constantly expanding. She opened doors to visual exploration and language for many,” says Susan Jørgensen of her colleague, mentor, and friend. During her tenure at the museum, Sinsheimer expanded the photography collection to nearly 7,500 works—acquiring notable pieces from the 19th century, science-related, and photojournalistic images—and organized more than 120 exhibitions. 1130 State St., Santa Barbara, 805-963-4364. Fragile BEAUTY

Susan Jørgensen,

65 Fallen Petals,

Lurking behind SUSAN JORGENSEN ’s magnificent photographs of animals and the earthly habitations they leave behind—nests, feathers, shells, and skeletons—is a poignant reminder of our own fragile mortality. “Being a naturalist,” says the Brooks Institute-trained artist, “I have always reflected on the cycles of life.” A Midwest childhood spent outdoors collecting nature’s detritus (twigs, pods, leaves, insect casings) foreshadowed the exquisite images Jørgensen’s camera would capture years later at her Santa Ynez ranch and on frequent safaris in Africa. “Photography is hunting of another sort,” she notes, “observation and discovery without end.” Exhibited and collected nationwide, Jørgensen’s work is available at San Francisco’s John Pence Gallery, johnpence.com. Closer to home, her images reside in Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s renowned photography collection, overseen by the late Karen Sinsheimer (see “Depth of Field”). L . D . P O R T E R

Rocktober arrived in full force at the Santa Barbara Bowl, most notably with a marathon performance by NEIL YOUNG + PROMISE OF THE REAL supporting his current album, The Monsanto Years, recorded in Oxnard at the Teatro. (A conditional use permit requires bowl shows to end at 10 pm; Young played until nearly 10:40.) He and the band— featuring a pair of Willie Nelson’s sons—dug out deep cuts like “Time Fades Away” and even distributed organic seed packets in defiance of the new California Seed Law. C . B .

His micro fashion film series titled 21, instagram.com/21episodes—21 episodes lasting 15 seconds—is a classic love triangle with aesthetic overtones inspired by 1960s French films like Roger Vadim’s La Bride sur le Cou (1961) featuring Brigitte Bardot. Maclennan’s überstylish series also serves as a clever marketing device replete with subtle product placement—brand sponsors include French clothing giant Lacoste—and a candid love letter to Santa Barbara, where 21 was filmed. Perfect tan, loose blonde hair, engaging smile, easy-going manner. Meet David Pratt, the youthful new executive director—and face—of the increasingly hip SANTA BARBARA SYMPHONY . Surfer? Yep. When he wasn’t riding waves, Pratt made his mark from his native Australia to Hollywood, creating and developing hugely successful arts organizations. He has similar plans for our symphony (now in its 63rd season) and is anxious to engage a hyperevolving musical demographic. “I’m very driven,” he says. “In my mind, I know exactly what I’m trying to create with this organization.” His vision is collaborative, progressive, and cool. He’s lived all over the world, and along with cosmopolitan conductor Nir Kabaretti, Pratt plans to entice his core audience and new recruits in decidedly metromusical ways. He’s also anxious to expand the symphony’s education component from 5,000 students countywide to 10,000. “With schools continuing to cut back, it’s our responsibility,” he says. This winter, the symphony rings in the New Year, as always, with one of the best parties (tickets from $38) of the year at the Granada; on January 16 and 17, musicians strut their musical chops on Bartók’s challenging, majestic Concerto for Orchestra (tickets from $28); and February features two of Rachmaninoff’s most popular and romantic piano pieces (tickets from $26). 1330 State St., Ste. 102, Santa

Using a surplus of local, organic red peppers from Mano Farms, Felix stuffed them with fish and corn and then roasted them before plating them atop a chamomile-infused sauce. “I love using herbs like chamomile, which have medicinal purposes,” he says. The Argentina-meets-Ojai mash-up vibe went on with pixie tangerine oil, a local Riverbench wine pairing, and a finale of dulce de leche gelato—an homage to traditional Argentine gelato. Says Felix: “Our job is to get people together to celebrate life through good wine and creative food that represents where we are.” J E N N I F E R B L A I S E K R A M E R C O L E C TI V O F E L I X .CO M

On a warm night in Ojai, guests sip spiked South American iced tea under strung lights. The patio of Tipple & Ramble looks more like a neighbor’s bohemian backyard than a home store, especially with chef Diego Felix—who is garnering buzz all over the globe for his friendly, food-focused events—at the helm. Along with his wife, Sanra, his team, COLECTIVO FELIX , zigzags between Buenos Aires, New York, and California, hosting private dinners and creative pop-ups full of Latin American flavors and local ingredients. “In Buenos Aires, I focused entirely on vegetables and seafood, which made me unique in Argentina. However, in my first weeks in Ojai, I stumbled upon a local familyowned butcher, Watkins, who raises and butchers their own cows. Their meat was so good I had to use it,” Diego says. “I also wanted to branch out and start using meat because I have been focusing on only seafood for almost 10 years.” Centering this dinner around traditional Argentine grilled skirt steak, Diego added a twist with “kimchimichurri,” which melds Argentine chimichurri with a kimchi fermentation technique he “relearned” in Los Angeles. “I wanted to have a

Opened late August, NOCCIOLA RISTORANTE , 805-640-1648, nocciolaojai.com, serves authentic Italian fare with an Ojai flair (and, of course, local ingredients). Try the Casoncelli ($17)—homemade beet ravioli with poppy seeds, Parmesan, and brown butter. “I love that food is a very raw form of communication between people, especially in this day in age,” says co-owner Julie Hara. “I really believe that you can tell a lot about a person from their relationship with food and their attitudes toward dining as a whole.” Nirasha Rodriguez’s THE FOOD LIAISON , 805-200-3030, thefoodliaison.com, lunch counter in Carpinteria is the result of her dream to “unite the community through food and education,” she says. There, diners line up for healthful, organic yet rustic bowls, salads, tartines, and more that incorporate local produce and proteins. Sign up online for Rodriguez’s bimonthly cooking classes—learn to prepare a vegan holiday feast ($75) on December 12. Not your typical sushi joint, chef Yoichi Kawabata’s namesake off-the-beaten-path YOICHI’S, 805-962-6627, yoichis.com, is frequented for its refined Kaiseki menu ($85)—seven courses of traditional, seasonal Japanese fare such as soup, wagyu tataki, fresh kumamoto oyster with ponzu sauce…. Sashimi and nigiri are also offered, but you won’t find sushi rolls here. Reservations are highly recommended. The newest addition to Lompoc is SCRATCH KITCHEN , 805-819-0829, scratch-kitchen.com, where

the area’s winemakers and foodies go for the freshest housemade lunch, dinner, and brunch dishes such as a cheese plate ($15) garnished with pickled grapes, jam, nuts, and fruit or a fried tomato caprese salad ($13) with balsamic reduction. “We are working on fertilizing the epicurean desert that is the Lompoc Valley,” says chef/owner Augusto Caudillo. “We have nurtured relationships with talented local farmers and winemakers that support our vision of what Lompoc really is.” G I N A Z . Part of an ongoing revamp of the OJAI VALLEY INN & SPA is the unveiling of the resort’s new signature restaurant, Olivella and Vine. At the helm of the kitchen is Michelin-experienced chef Truman Jones, who, with chef de cuisine Andrea Rodella, incorporates the best local ingredients into the menu, which features Italianesque California dishes such as seared scallops with artichokes, farm peaches, galletta di riso (rice cake), and mint before an entrée of perfectly prepared branzino with fennel, watercress, and citrus grown on the property. Savor an aperitif and light bite at the Wallace Neff Heritage Bar before dining at a table on one of the restaurant’s patios while you take in Ojai’s legendary fiery sunsets. 905

Brothers Brendan and Emmett Malloy recently opened M. SPECIAL BREWING COMPANY ’s tap room and brewery in Goleta to offer lagers and ales specially crafted by brewmaster Josh Ellis. “We incorporated a lot of friends and local tradesmen in the buildout of the brewery, which has a backyard barbecue-style environment,” says sales manager Chris Miller—including homegrown woodworker John Birchim’s 50-foot handmade wood bar and a mural painted by their longtime friend Jeff Canham. As for the brews, of which there’s a rotating menu of about six, “I have beers for palates of your whole crew, not just one or two of you,” says Ellis. “Not all beers are for all people, but that’s the beauty of making different portfolio beers and one-offs”—everything from the light M. Special American Lager to the hoppy Greatland Special IPA and a citrusy All-Time Farmhouse Saison. “People ask me which beer is my favorite,” says Ellis. “I always say the same thing, ‘Which of your kids do you love the most?’” 6860 Cortona Dr., Ste. Fijian FAMILY FUN

The very thought of a private South Seas island conjures up images of idyllic luxury and romance, and LAUCALA ISLAND , in Fiji, has all of that in spades. Once the private domain of publishing entrepreneur Malcolm Forbes, Laucala’s 4.7 square miles embrace tropical rainforest and stunning white-sand beaches surrounded by a sparkling turquoise sea. The resort itself occupies the northern section of the island, and indeed the 25 exquisite residences—one, two, and three-bedroom beachfront, bayfront, and hillside villas, as well as the exclusive Overwater, Peninsula, and Hilltop Villas—bring Oceanic-inspired design and indooroutdoor living to a new level of bespoke pampering that not only welcomes couples but also appeals to families with children. While the adults enjoy the championship-level 18-hole golf course, pristine water adventures, and spa treatments, an extensive kids program tailors these and other activities to the youngsters. For the sports minded, there's horseback riding, mountain bike tours, and nature walks as well as private golf instruction. The kids' club offers arts and crafts, but children may also learn about Fijian language, cuisine, and crafts on visits to the island’s traditional cultural village. At the beach, kidfriendly pastimes range from tubing, knee boarding, and snorkeling to waterskiing and sailing on a Hobie Cat. The entire family will be interested in a tour of Laucala’s 240-acre hydroponic farm, which not only produces the fruit and vegetables for the resort’s five superb restaurants but is also home to the cattle, pigs, ducks, and quail whose meat appears on the gourmet menus. Meals range from the fine dining of the Plantation House and Asian specialties at the Seagrass Restaurant to barbecues at the Beach Bar, while the Rock Lounge is the perfect place for a sunset cocktail. But there may be nothing more memorable—for young and old alike—than simply relaxing around the spectacular pool and feasting on Laucala’s natural beauty. Montecito-based designer Steve Hermann and his wife, Talina (known for her namesake women’s wear line), recently refurbished the midcentury bungalow resort hotel L’HORIZON PALM SPRINGS. An adults-only, architectural buff's retreat, the luxury property features 25 private guest suites, a spa, and a lobby boutique Le Shop that exclusively sells Talina’s latest resort wear line among other fashionable items. When you're done lounging at the pool cabanas, it's a short walk to SO•PA restaurant, the alfresco dining grotto on the property, where global flavors influence dishes such as poached Hudson Valley foie gras or roasted Spanish octopus with crushed potatoes, parsley pesto, and roasted baby tomatoes. "I am very excited about adding our signature restaurant SO•PA to L’Horizon Resort and Spa," says Steve. "We have created a worldclass hotel, and we needed a world-class restaurant to accompany it." Helmed by Michelin-starred chef Giacomo Pettinari, who honed his craft at the legendary elBulli, the dramatic and intimate space is finished with firepits, Lindsey Adelman chandeliers, and a family-style 26-foot live-edge walnut communal table. "I designed the interior courtyard to be intimate and romantic, with a little bit of an edge," says Steve. "The mix of soft lighting from the chandeliers and the firelight provide a special experience that transports you. This in conjunction with Pettinari’s unparalleled cuisine has created a dining experience that is unparalleled." Rates: From $485. 1050 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, 760-323-1858.

Located in Maui's upscale Wailea, the recently renovated FAIRMONT KEA LANI is a fitting destination for a Hawaiian sojourn with kids. The allsuite property—there are also 37 private two-story villas if you’re traveling with multiple generations—offers an abundance of activities for keiki (children) and luxe leisure for grown-ups as well. Start the day with a sumptuous breakfast of the freshest Maui-grown fruit along with kid-friendly standbys. (The keiki dining program is a boon when traveling with children, as it caters to picky palates and children under age 5 can dine gratis). In addition to the regular menus throughout the resort’s restaurants, the Lifestyle Cuisine menus are designed for guests with special dietary needs. Stake a place next to one of the two family-friendly pools and enjoy a day of fun in the sun. They tend to sense that, and they love you because you love them…

COAST TO COAST

Nacho Figueras is polo’s answer to David Beckham. The 6-goal professional player is the whole package. Married to his teenage sweetheart, photographer and model Delfina Blaquier, the jet-setting father of four travels the globe with his picture-perfect brood in tow. The handsome Argentine rose to fame playing on the fields of the Hamptons, where he just so happened to be discovered by fashion photographer Bruce Weber at a dinner party. He’s that enviable trifecta—with the look, the family, and the accent to boot. And now they’ve set their sights on the sunny sands of California as a new seasonal hub. “A mission in my life is to bring polo to the world a little more,” says Nacho, who has saddled up with both Prince William and Prince Harry and cohosts the annual bicoastal Veuve Clicquot Polo Classics on Manhattan’s Governor’s Island and at Pacific Palisades’s Will Rogers State Park. The 38-year-old is as comfortable straddling a horse and hitting the game-winning goal for his Black Watch team as —NACHO FIGUERAS he is in front of the camera modeling for major designers, most notably with Ralph Lauren for the past 10 years. He couldn’t have a better teammate in Delfina. They are the real deal, a modern fairytale in the making. From love at first sight in their native Buenos Aires to a wedding on the family’s estancia in 2004 and whirlwind trots around the world, the charming couple even starred together in Ralph Lauren’s Romance campaign in 2011, aptly titled “A Love Story.” No one knows the glamorous polo world like “Delfi” (as Nacho calls her), who’s watched four generations of players—her grandfather, father, husband, and son—play in countless matches. The striking mother of Hilario, 15, Aurora, 11, Artemio, 6, and Alba, 2, is a force to be reckoned with on a horse as well. A fluid and fearless rider (yes, she is commanding the reins bareback and barefoot in beaded gowns and swimsuits in the preceding pages), the 5’11” stunner is just as passionate about the game

“Horses are like children.

and the life they have created in Argentina and abroad. The Latin power couple has built a modernist manse outside of Buenos Aires that contains an art studio for Nacho to paint his colorful abstract canvases and to house Delfina’s oversized black-and-white photographs. The concrete and wood barns host more than 500 horses with an adjacent breeding facility and turn out prize-winning ponies at worldclass prices. “Horses are a very important part of the game. Without good horses, you can’t win. It’s like race-car driving. You could be the best driver in the world, but if I give you a 1964 Oldsmobile, and I drive a Ferrari, you can never beat me,” remarks Nacho. “With polo, it’s more or less the same. If you have great horses and are playing someone who is as good as you but doesn’t have good horses, 99 percent of the time you will win.” Delfina adds, “When you see the horses race down the field, it is very emotional. You know the grandmother and the aunts of those ponies. It’s even more special to watch our own horse, because it’s like having your own child.” It’s no surprise that they’re keeping their eyes on the ball rolling toward the West Coast—fashion, art, entertainment, music, food, film, and even the luxe biz of polo— layering into the cultural zeitgeist of the new California. New Yorkers are moving to the City of Angels in droves, and our American Riviera is seducing Hamptonites. We also happen to have one of the finest polo clubs in the world. John Muse, president of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club adds, “Nacho is a brand of his own in fashion and the equestrian lifestyle. He is one of the most effective promoters of the sport of polo.” “Santa Barbara has a very special vibe,” says Delfina. “I could make it my home very fast.” This past summer, the Figueras tribe roadtripped up the 101 and made camp at Tom Barrack’s Piocho Ranch in Santa Ynez. Nacho played in casual games at the Happy Canyon farm while the children and Delfina took in trail rides in the valley, sunsets at Santa Claus beach, and ice cream at Rori’s Creamery. “We love it as a family here,” says Nacho. “The beach, the horses, the people, the polo club, and every once in a while an In-n-Out burger!” ●

They will always tell you the truth.” Top to bottom: JOHN VARVATOS shirt, LEVI’S jeans; on

REGENCY REDUX

Sometimes a detour makes all the difference. Fifteen years ago, London residents Simon and Karen Fry were on their way to Hawaii when they stopped off in Los Angeles and decided to drive to Montecito. “We loved it,” Karen remembers. The couple not only stayed for a few days, but the following year, they returned and rented a house for six months while their home in England was being redone. “We always wanted to come back,” Karen says, and in 2013, when the couple’s son, Jack, was about to enter eighth grade, they seized the opportunity to relocate. Not to, however, a Spanish colonial rancho or Tuscan villa. “We didn’t want a Mediterranean house or something remotely formal,” says Simon. “We tried to find something different.” That turned out to be a Hollywood Regency home with a towering entry, a steep mansard roof, and a symmetrical floor plan that showcased a swimming pool and pavilion. The place had been designed in 1959 by John Elgin Woolf, one of the major proponents of this glamorous midcentury architecture. Inside, the home retained much of the glitz that also characterized this style, including the lavish use of marble floors and finishes and glossy white lacquer walls. “When we first saw it,” says Simon, “we asked ourselves, ‘Does the house support anything different? Does it have decent bones?’ There was nothing wrong with the design; it just wasn’t our taste.” The 6,200-square-foot, X-shaped floor plan did have certain advantages though, including stunning views from almost every room. The layout “is very open,” says Simon. “We didn’t want rooms you don’t go into. We visually use them, even if we don’t go in and sit down.” At the same time, the X offered separate living spaces. “We have our wing,” he says, “Jack has his. There’s a leg for the kitchen and utility and one for media.” The place would prove a superb backdrop for the couple’s penchant for bold art, their self-confident mix of the modern and antique, and the family’s contemporary lifestyle. “Simon’s background is in finance,” notes Karen, “but his passion is architecture and design.” In addition to redoing several of their past residences, he had designed racing yachts and—with Karen—devel-

oped, designed, and run a private members’ spa and fitness gym in London. Here, they began with extensive cosmetic changes, pulling out the marble, removing the shiny walls, and replacing the floors with rich Mayan oak. To tame the scale of the entry hall—which offered an arresting view through the center axis of the house—they commissioned two tall paintings by Los Angeles abstract artist Ron Piller. For the spacious living room, where a curved glass wall reveals a spectacular ocean panorama, they ordered a leather couch from Italy. “We found Reed Floors & Interiors” in Carpinteria, notes Karen, “and asked them to source pieces we wanted.” Reed introduced them to a Mexican company that sold “live wood,” and the family commissioned a substantial rustic oak coffee table for the living room and had them use the same wood—quartered and mirrored and with cracks and holes filled with black resin—to create a more contemporary dining table. Artfully mixed in with the new furnishings are cherished pieces from the Frys’ previous homes—an antique gilded chest, a contemporary feathery wall hanging bought in Notting Hill two decades ago, works by Miró, and assorted objects that range from a sleek British jockey’s saddle to four 19th-century French snuff boxes in the shape of canine boxers’ heads. Art lines the walls to the bedroom wings, where Jack’s room has a painted Union Jack filling an entire wall, while the master suite includes separate offices—hers in aubergine and gold, his in taupe—separate dressing rooms, and a bedroom whose color scheme echoes the blue and white of the elegantly textured silk rug. The Frys did leave a few touches of the Hollywood Regency aura. There are marble finishes in the baths, and the well-appointed kitchen (“Simon loves to cook,” says Karen) centers around a massive island of the gray-veined stone. But the pool pavilion has been reincarnated as a personal gym. And tucked away there are some fanciful artworks: a few of Jack’s childhood drawings enlarged to poster size and colored in, unmistakable evidence of the family’s witty approach to personal style. ●

S A N TA B A R B A R A , I N C .

When I first moved to town more than 10 years ago, friends back East scratched their heads. “Santa Barbara... Is that a suburb of Los Angeles?” they’d ask. “Oh yeah,” I’d say. I didn’t want to let the hordes in on what I thought of as my secret. Santa Barbara had been hiding in plain sight for decades. It had long been a Shangri-la to the movie stars, titans of industry, artists, and dreamers who came to get married, juice up, start over. But, cognoscenti apart, most people viewed Santa Barbara as a provincial backwater—and locals were all too happy to play along. Well, it’s not a secret anymore. Bold-faced names such as Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe, Kevin Costner, Jeff Bridges, Ellen DeGeneres, George Lucas, Conan O’Brien, and Ashton Kutcher have made sure of that. With their help, Santa Barbara isn’t just a town—it has become a lifestyle. Santa Barbara’s fate was sealed when some of its best homegrown experiments turned into global movements. Channel Islands Surfboards, founded by Al Merrick, has evolved from a low-key company into a global powerhouse, merging with Burton Snowboards to capture a significant share of the market. From its original headquarters in Carpinteria, Lynda.com has transformed online education and training. And let’s not forget the consumer electronics company Sonos, another homegrown initiative that has revolutionized wireless audio systems and applications around the globe. Scott Anderson, Channel Island Surfboards’ general manager, says Santa Barbara and its environs are critical to their branding. “There is a definite parallel with the brand and the region,” he says. “Santa Barbara is held at almost mythological status in the global surfing community. With Rincon 0.8 miles from our factory, we use it as our testing facility. Santa Barbara literally helps shape our products.” The “Jewel of the American Riviera”—as the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club describes itself—capitalizes on its brand of refined, sporty luxury through a licensing program that has penetrated markets in more than a dozen countries. A range of products—from leather goods to fragrance—all bearing the club logo sell briskly in the shopping malls of Milan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Tel Aviv. Santa Barbara has become a name that people and companies from far away want on their work, too. When the Italian luxury linens giant Frette created a bedding line with a Spanish-Moorish aesthetic, they called it Montecito. Pottery Barn has also bestowed the name on some of its products. Restoration Hardware’s Montecito collection of outdoor furniture has a midcentury look, tailored yet glamorous. Barclay Butera named a polished nickel round tray with bamboo handles Montecito, perhaps a nod to the enclave’s tradition of stylish at-home entertaining. Fashion and personal-care companies have followed.

As if living there wasn’t enough, Montecitans could wear the Tory Burch Montecito cover-up or Trina Turk’s Montecito dress and burn the Montecito candle—a blend of green jasmine buds, natural eucalyptus, and cedarwood— from Hudson Grace. San Francisco-based home fragrance company Agraria named a delectable array of scents the Santa Barbara Collection, “since it was our second most favorite California city (we did leave our hearts in San Francisco),” says Agraria president and CEO James N. Gentry. You know that a place has become a brand when people start talking about how great it was before it became what it is. Incubrand Studios founder Brooks Branch, who has lived in Santa Barbara off and on since the 1970s, notes that for many years, Santa Barbara was off the mainstream radar. “It was a hidden jewel,” he says. “The Santa Barbara soap opera was the first time people looked in on the fantasy that is Santa Barbara.” Mother and daughter Nancy and Caroline Law, who own The Santa Barbara Company, an online shop and boutique specializing in homegrown products, say a surprisingly large portion of their clientele is local. “There’s an old-school crowd that is proud to remember Santa Barbara when it was a little sleepier, slower, and quieter,” says Caroline. “These customers tend to be the ones who are passionate about supporting the artists and artisans that thrive here. Locals tend to care that the products are produced here, while visitors are more interested in items with the words Santa Barbara on the label.” One of the secrets of Santa Barbara’s branding success is its history of proactive local governance. In recent years, Visit Santa Barbara, the official mouthpiece of the city’s tourist industry, has been aimed at defining a vintage identity. Thanks to Pearl Chase and other city planners, our town will never be dotted with billboards and high-rises that plague other urban destinations. But insiders know better than to imagine we’re frozen in time. New cultural resources are in the works, including the forthcoming Museum of Exploration and Innovation, which will bring science and technology alive for Santa Barbara’s youngest citizens. Certainly Santa Barbara’s profile has been raised immeasurably by films such as Sideways (2004) and It’s Complicated (2009), which were as much about the region as the stories. And on any given day, you’re likely to run into one of the stars of TV shows such as The Bachelor and Montecito around town. So, as Santa Barbara becomes a celebrity city, how does the collective fantasy shape our own behavior? “You can carve out your private moments, find the little places you can get away to,” says Branch. For him, that means adjusting the timing of when he visits his favorite locales—strolling State Street on the weekdays, for instance, rather than weekends. “You can figure out how to have your own private relationship with Santa Barbara.” ●

You know that a place has become a brand when people start talking about how great it was before it became what it is.
