Click & Camp With So-Cal’s year-round stints of welcoming weather, the magnetism of the great outdoors can kindle impromptu campouts. Problem is, campgrounds fill up, often months in advance, and the backup “Let’s just go see if a spot has opened up” gets risky for time-crunched weekend warriors. Here to help is HIPCAMP , a Bay Area startup that not only streamlines reservations for traditional campsites but also—through its land-sharing outreach—brings together privately held acreage with nature lovers eager to pay to camp on it. On that front, Hipcamp’s recent inroads include New Cuyama, an otherworldly destination about 40 miles (as the crow flies) from downtown Santa Barbara. “It’s an alternative to the urban life,” says New Cuyama ranch owner and retired firefighter Jim Reveley. “It’s laid-back with big starry skies and awesome views. Once they’ve had a visit, they can’t wait to come back.” With Hipcamp, that return trip is just a few clicks away. K E I T H H A M M

Head down to The Mill—Darrell and Kirsten Becker’s happening artisan marketplace—for a taste of modern American cuisine at WILDWOOD KITCHEN . Together, co-owners Adam Poverman and chef Justin West (also owner of the restaurant Julienne) have opened this casual spot to offer classic barbecue for lunch and dinner. Among the menu of flavorful dishes are a tri-tip sandwich with melted cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, and pico de gallo ($16) for lunch on the patio or the salmon with red potato hash brown, sautéed broccoli, and blackberry barbecue sauce ($26) for dinner.
