Welcome to the 2017 Polo Season This year will be an exciting one for the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. The club will focus on providing a premier experience at the Engel & Völkers Polo Stadium for our polo community and building an enduring base of support with ongoing efforts to improve our grassroots polo development. We will continue to move forward from the success of last year’s season, which saw a thrilling Gulfstream Pacific Coast Open broadcast on national television, a resurgence of our fall 8-goal league, and several new teams and players joining our 12-goal league and pro pool. For the upcoming year, our priority is upgrading the fields and maintenance program to provide the best venue possible for the high level of polo played here. During the winter, the club is implementing a host of capital improvements to the grounds and stables. On the low-goal and youth polo side of things, the club is also hosting the United States Polo Association’s National Intercollegiate Championships, the USPA National Youth Tournament finals, and a Pacific Coast Arena League Tournament for the first time, along with annual events such as the summer youth tournaments and autumn women’s tournament. Please join us in celebrating polo in paradise on the American Riviera. The club’s management team and the board of directors look forward to making the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club your home for friendly, first-class polo.

“I grew up in England, traveled overseas extensively, and eventually relocated to Santa Barbara. Having followed polo in England and Spain, I joined the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club to attend the Sunday games,” says the writer of “Polo Pioneers” (page 72). “Some of the best polo in the world is played here.”

The minimum age that a horse can be ready to play in 16-goal polo. Horses typically start polo training or years of age. It takes several years to at train them to be calm in the chaos of polo, respond to the rider’s commands at high speeds, and develop the muscular strength and stamina to play 16-goal polo. Called the sport of kings, polo is how ancient kings trained their horses to go into battle.

Anyone who thinks polo is all about glamour and trophies will have their illusions swept away after listening to 5-goal Team USPA player FELIPE VIANA talk about building fences on his polo farm in Wellington, Florida. “I didn’t have a tractor, so I had to borrow my neighbor’s to drive posts at night,” he says. “I would map out the fence lines during the day, then set posts at night. If I had known how hard it was going to be, I might have decided against owning a farm.” A member of Team USPA, Viana was born in New York. He spent a lot of his childhood at a farm in Uruguay, where he learned to rope and ride horses. His father—recognizing his son’s athletic ability and affinity for horses—took him to a polo lesson when he was 6 years old and started him on his path to professional polo. Viana first drew notice on the national polo scene when he played for Crab Orchard’s 20-goal team during the 2013 Florida season while completing his final year studying economics and history at the University of Virginia. He also won two intercollegiate championships with the UVA indoor polo team and played for Valiente’s 20-goal team alongside polo superstar Adolfo Cambiaso the past two winters in Wellington. This year will be his second season in Santa Barbara—he played for Farmers & Merchants Bank with Henry Walker during the 2016 12-goal season and his horse Grey Goose won a Best Playing Pony Award at the 2016 Lisle Nixon 12goal final. “We started great, winning the first tournament,”
Viana recounts of his first year’s experience at the club, “but unfortunately key injuries affected further aspirations.” Viana was impressed with his first year in Santa Barbara. “Since I started my career as a pro, I have always heard amazing things about the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, to the extent they seemed unrealistic,” he says. “However, all of these things are indeed real. The club, the social vibe, the fields and track, the town, and off-field activities the area offers are fantastic. It’s definitely the full package for anyone who loves the sport.” This year, Viana is returning to the Santa Barbara 12-goal season with Danny Walker’s Farmers & Merchants Bank team and is optimistic. “Danny built a strong team that should be challenging every 12-goal tournament,” he says. One to Watch
CORY WILLIAMS started playing polo in the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club coaching league and interscholastic arena program. The 16-year-old junior at Bishop Garcia Diego High School continues to compete every year in the interscholastic program, and in grass polo, she has progressed from Coaching League to the Pro Pool League and was awarded MVP of the 2016 spring pro pool season. She plays women’s tournaments, the Last Chance, Pacific Coast Arena League arena tournaments, and National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) youth tournaments. She even found herself in the 8-goal league last fall substituting for an injured player. M E L A N J A J O N E S WHAT DREW YOU TO POLO FROM JUMPING? Just for
kicks, I got a polo lesson with Sunny Hale about 3 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Then I participated in the polo summer camp that Geannie Holden Sheller and Mike Sheller founded. However, I actually gave up jumping about a year ago to focus completely on polo.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH PLAYING IN OTHER CLUBS AND COUNTRIES? Spring of 2015 I got
to travel to Argentina with my father to visit the Llambias family at their ranch. Fall of 2015 I was lucky enough to have a lesson at a polo club in Dubai. Summer of 2016 I was selected to go to England and Scotland as part of the Polo Training Foundation program for youth polo players, and finally this February, I played in an international snow polo tournament in Poland. Also, through the opportunity of the NYTS tournaments, I’ve been able to travel to many different clubs across California and even Myopia Polo Club in Massachusetts. From all of this traveling, I’ve been able to experience and learn many new things, not just about polo, but about how the world works.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? For polo, I’m hoping to just play as much as I can here in Santa Barbara before I go off to college. From there, I hope to play collegiate polo and hopefully be successful in that realm. WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE POLO HORSE? Although I hate to pick favorites because I love all my horses so much, I think I would say Picante—she’s so special to me because of her spunk and love of the game. Out of all the horses I have ridden, I have yet to meet one that gets as excited as she does to play. Just about nothing can stop her from getting out onto the field, and she plays her heart out every chukker no matter what.

The Road to the Gulfstream PCO
Ben Soleimani had a banner year in 2016. His Restoration Hardware team won the Gulfstream Pacific Coast Open for the first time, and his exclusive White Party was the most-coveted invitation of the SBPRC social season. Most people would be satisfied with that, but not Soleimani. He capped off a fantastic polo year with an even more important triumph— marrying his love, Gimena Loza. RH Polo team’s road to the Gulfstream PCO had a bumpy start. Soleimani had to rebuild the organization for the Restoration Hardware team from scratch, as he had been overseas for three years concentrating on his partnership with Restoration Hardware in Europe. He did not have any horses in the United States for himself or for his longtime professional player and team organizer, Santiago von Wernich. Rebuilding two high-goal strings from scratch is not an easy task, but RH Polo got it done with a lot of help from Adam Snow. A former 10-goal player, Snow has played with Soleimani for years and is known for his horsemanship and breeding operation in Aiken, South Carolina. Snow and von Wernich searched out horses for Soleimani during the winter and then made an unconventional arrangement for Snow to play the first two tournaments in the 2016 highgoal season, then coach the team and mount von Wernich on Snow’s horses for the Gulfstream PCO. The team started slowly against the tough competition in the 2016 season. In the early tournaments, Klentner Ranch and FMB Too! dominated. Both teams had players that had been together for years, while it took a few games for the RH Polo players to mesh. Costi Caset and
Jason Crowder rounded out the RH team roster. Crowder and Caset both played peewee polo at SBPRC as children but had never played together professionally before joining the RH team. The team started to click in the America Cup and made it to the final where they ran into a tough FMB Too! team. Getting to the final of the America Cup galvanized the RH Polo team, and they entered into the PCO with momentum on their side. They finished bracket play with a 2-1 record, then faced powerhouse FMB Too! in the semifinals. RH Polo played the game of the season and exacted revenge on FMB Too! for the America Cup defeat in a thriller, winning the PCO semifinal 9-8. The Pacific Coast Open is more than 100 years old. To win it is to be part of history and to hold the title of the best polo team on the West Coast. And on August 28, 2016, Soleimani and his RH team lived the dream when they defeated FMB Too! in front of a sold-out grandstand and cameras of the NBC Sports Network. Says Soleimani of winning the coveted title and holding the historic trophy: “It is an honor to have your name inscribed on the PCO trophy.” Costi Caset was honored as the Most Valuable Player and his horse Pancho selected as the Best Playing Pony. “It’s amazing, the biggest win of my life,” exclaimed Caset after the final. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of—coming back to where I grew up and winning this tournament.” Soleimani departed after the big win for something even more important than polo— his wedding. TRIBUTE: Sunny Hale 1968-2017
In the male-dominated world of polo, it takes an extraordinary woman to defy the odds and succeed. Sunny Hale did exactly that. Born in 1968 to Alex and Sue Sally Hale, her love of polo became obvious in her early years, as she turned pro by the age of 18. It wasn’t a surprise, considering her mother competed during the 1950s and ’60s dressed as a male player. Her mother’s mind-set influenced Hale, who only wanted to be known and accepted because of her skills, not her gender. During her lifelong career, she became known as the best female player in the world, and the first female team member to win the U.S. Open Polo Championship. But Hale wasn’t satisfied with her own personal success. She worked tirelessly to break gender-related barriers and create equal opportunities for women in polo. She started the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) in 2005 to foster and encourage female players to compete and create a community of shared passion. After founding WCT, she went on to start the American Polo Horse Association, a place for horse lovers to trade, share, and collect pedigrees. Off the field, friends and family adored Hale. Outgoing and compassionate, she was fondly known as the life of the party. Hale’s relentless work solidified her status as a legend in the world of polo. “Sunny is irreplaceable and a true inspiration to all,” says longtime friend and fellow club member and player Paige Beard. “She is first and foremost a friend—kind, humble, sensitive, and spiritual. Her passion, leadership, and perseverance have paved the way for girls and women in our sport. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to know her, play with her, and work with her on extending her global mission.” She died in early 2017. The USPA National Youth Tournament Series Final The best young players in the country are descending on the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club during Labor Day weekend to compete in the USPA National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) championship CECIL SMITH CUP . NYTS was founded in 2013, though this is the first year that the SBPRC has hosted its national finals. Youth players compete at their home clubs for the honor of being selected as an All-Star player in one of four zones across the country. Then the four zones send their All-Stars to compete at the annual national final. “The program has grown from 24 playoffs in 2013 to 33 playoffs in 2016,” says Amanda Snow, director of USPA player development. “We are excited to have the NYTS final back in California for 2017. Santa Barbara is a perfect location—with great fields and a tradition of excellent polo,” says Chrys Beal, chairwoman of the USPA Junior Polo Committee. “The organizers and participants in the 2017 final are grateful for the hospitality of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. We are amazed at the talent displayed by these young men and women.” Every year, SBPRC hosts a club NYTS tournament. Last year, local player Jake Klentner was selected as an All-Star for the club and then made it onto the western regional All-Star team that competed at Myopia Polo Club near Boston. “It is really exciting to have the NYTS final in Santa Barbara where we have some of the nicest fields in the country (in my opinion),” says Klentner. The tournament starts with semifinal games on Friday, September 1, then the winning teams play on Sunday, September 3. Games will be broadcast via video live stream on the USPA Polo Network as well as on uspolo.org. M E L A N J A J O N E S

HOW LONG HAVE YOU PLAYED POLO? I have been riding all my life but started playing polo in 1984 at a lively clinic lead by Corky Linfoot and SBPRC’s now-deceased 10-goaler Bob Skene. I still have friends from that original clinic.

WHAT’S YOUR CONNECTION TO THE SBPRC? My great uncle William Riley McKeen
had a home in Montecito in the 1920s and ’30s, so Santa Barbara has felt like home to me since the first time I ever drove up. My sister—sculptor Laurie Brecheen Ballard who now resides on Padaro Lane—was the first female nonspouseplaying member of the SBPRC in the late ’70s.

On a warm summer evening last season, more than 300 guests gathered at the SANTA BARBARA POLO & RACQUET CLUB for a celebration of the club’s Polo magazine in partnership with Santa Barbara Magazine. Featured guest Nacho Figueras spoke and signed copies of his new novel, High Season (Hachette), while a welldressed crowd sipped Veuve Clicquot champagne, Summerland Winery vintages, Jardesca summer cocktails, and dined on passed appetizers from Los Agaves. Near the champagne tower, Revelry Event Designers created outdoor living rooms right on the field, complete with leather sofas, lanterns, and throws. As the sunset gave way to stars, DJ Fab moved people off the grass and onto the dance floor.

As the polo club welcomes its international players, Santa Barbara also heralds the arrival of up-and-coming chef AGUSTIN MALLMANN , who spends half the year in Argentina and half the year in Santa Barbara, where he was born. Trained under his uncle, famed South American TV culinary star Francis Mallmann, the 24-year-old went out on his own a couple of years ago. “It was amazing to work in Francis’s kitchens for six years,” says Agustin, who has adapted his uncle’s wood-fired cooking to his own cuisine: He uses the plancha (a cast-iron griddle) heated over embers, Clockwise from top right: and a wood-fired oven to create Argentine-flavored dinners that are uniquely suited to the MALLMANN in his element; Santa Barbara lifestyle. “The technique ties to polo-style events,” he says, often outdoors, a ASADO WITH CHIMICHURRI ; little rustic but with superb meat and fish served the plancha. on fine plates with the best silver and glassware. “I try to buy everything at the farmers markets and get the fish at the Santa Barbara harbor,” while the meat sometimes comes from the clients’ own ranches. His ideal summer dinner, he says, starts with appetizers seared on the plancha—shrimp with portobello mushrooms and scallops with lemon zest, olive oil, and cilantro. He follows those with salmon cooked whole on the grill accompanied by basil aioli, and prime ribeye prepared over embers and served with Argentine chimichurri sauce. The side dish features a criolla of chopped green peppers and red onion mixed with arugula and dressed with olive oil and red wine vinegar. What to drink? Begin with sangria or a caipiroska—a version of caipirinha made with vodka—and move on to a nice white and definitely a Malbec, which pairs well with the meat. For dessert, there’s panqueque dulce de leche, a creamy caramel-filled crepe rolled on the plancha and served with vanilla ice cream and fresh mint. “The contrast of the warm crepe and cold ice cream is wonderful,” says Agustin. Agustin created one such beachside party here last summer for polo player Paco de Narvaez and his wife, Rocio. “This summer,” he says, “I’m hoping to show more people what I have to offer. The food will be awesome—that’s a given. But people will enjoy the whole experience.” J O A N T A P P E R

South America meets California in Matias Requena’s BUENA ONDA empanadas. The savory turnovers are traditional Argentine street food, but Requena gives them a local twist using meats, produce, and inspiration sourced from the area. His six varieties ($39 per dozen, order by phone or online and pick up at the kitchen downtown) include the Carne Picada with Rancho San Julian beef, onion, pepper, egg, and olive; the European-inspired vegetarian La Suiza with Swiss chard, leeks, Brie, and sage; and an Italian-style Caprese with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, among others. “Empanadas represent the diversity in community,” says Requena, whose family moved to the United States in 2002. “We decided to bring empanadas to Santa Barbara mainly because we felt the need to share our roots and culture with the locals that welcomed us to this beautiful land.” 724 E. Among the women who played polo in Montecito and Santa Barbara in 1930, a regular was VIOLET TUCKERMAN on an
all-women’s team—The Tuckins— with ANN JACKSON , and FRANCES TUCKERMAN (one
of her cousins). Vi was a major polo name of the time and this all-women’s team regularly played against men—and often won.
Feature - history Inside the 1937-built vintage cottage-style Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club clubhouse, the hunter-green walls are lined with decades’ worth of photos of teams accepting the silver cups, bowls, and trophies locked in glass-fronted cases. The beginning of the club’s story, however, predates that building, the trophies, and even the adjacent fields. From the start of polo in Santa Barbara, the sport was peripatetic from 1899 until it found a permanent home in 1926 at the current location in Carpinteria. Polo in Santa Barbara has a long heritage starting on April 27, 1894, when an exhibition match was played at the Agricultural Park’s Flower Festival (now the location of the Lower East side between the freeway and East Beach). This match encouraged sufficient local interest in the sport, and the first organized polo game in Santa Barbara was played on May 19, 1899, by a team formed of members of the Santa Barbara Country Club. By 1902, the fledgling polo club boasted a 40-member roster and interest in the sport had increased tremendously. The first purpose-built skin (dirt) polo field was in 1901 on the Westside at the foot of the Mesa, where the players leased 22 acres. It was not until 1916 that the first
grass field was built on Middle Road in Montecito and where, on April 1, four women made their first appearance in a mixed polo period. The red team: Dorothy Tweedy, Ruth Peabody, Charles Dabney, and Elmer Boeseke Jr. played against the blue team: Katherine Harvey, Lorna Tweedy, Graham Miles, and Frederick Leadbetter. This is also where local estate owner and socialite Esther Fiske Hammond was among the women players. On March 27, 1931, the Girls’ Championship of Santa Barbara was played on Fleischmann Field. It is significant that this particular game was included in the United States Polo Association’s yearbook, as this mention is perhaps the first acknowledgment by the USPA that women played polo in the United States. By 1932, many women in California were forming their own polo teams. Local player Ann Gavit Jackson (of the Palmer Jackson family) had a team in Santa Barbara. Dorothy Wheeler of Santa Cruz wrote to the USPA in New York for some help in organization, and secretary/treasurer Mr. F.S. O’Reiley replied that the general opinion was that “polo is not a women’s game!” The women in California knew this was nonsense and successfully formed their own organization

Feature - history with the help of the male players in the state. In June 1934, the first tournament of the Pacific Coast Women’s Polo Association was held. Two years later, it became the United States Women’s Polo Association. At one time there were 130 women players up and down the California coast. In late summer 1937, club owners Ann Jackson—with husband Charles “Pete”—took a women’s Santa Barbara polo team to play in Long Island. Unfortunately, the association came to an end at the start of World War II. In the same year, Ann Jackson went on to build the cottage-style polo clubhouse still standing to date. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were married in Santa Barbara in 1927 and lived in Montecito until their deaths (“Pete” in 1978, Ann in 1990). The Jackson family eventually sold the polo club in 1963 to Rudy Tongg of Hawaii. Today, along with the many other decades of contemporary women players who have closed the gender gap on the field, there are two women patrons (Leigh Brecheen and Dawn Jones) on the club’s board of directors, and nationwide, women’s polo is the fastest-growing sector in the game. ● S A N TA B A R B A R A P O L O 2 0 1 7

Tucked between Santa Barbara’s mountains and the Santa Ynez Valley, Folded Hills is a postcard of ranch life. White fences edge sprawling lawns and a plantation-style estate house is outfitted with a long deck and rocking chairs. Heritage pigs play near the chicken coop—where fresh eggs are gathered each morning—and those iconic Clydesdales roam the fields. Owner Andy Busch—who, as a 5-goal player, served as captain for the U.S. World Cup team for the Federation of International Polo—retired from professional-level polo after 28 years and loves his horses. Looking forward to the high-goal games this season, he says, “I plan to be there watching friends compete. I love to see the professional players and the incredible horses perform on the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club fields—there’s nothing like it.” Now, the patron of Grant’s Farm polo team is devoted to life on the farm. He and his wife, Kim, have poured love into every inch of their property (which a few lucky guests get to visit each year), and a vineyard seemed like a natural extension of the land. “When we started working on wine five years ago, we put together a team of professionals to assess the soils and ocean-influenced microclimate,” he says. The environment proved to be well suited to Rhône varietals, which was “a perfect fit” for Angela Osborne, the New Zealand-born winemaker and general manager who is known as a “guru of Grenache.” The grapes are grown with a common interest in
sustainability, adds Busch, who has planted the vineyard organically, just like his row crops. A winery and tasting room are envisioned for 2018, set near the Farmstead, an idyllic produce stand that sells organic crops grown on the ranch along with baked goods. In the meantime, the first vintages include Lilly Rosé, an estate rosé that’s an homage to Busch’s great-grandmother, Lilly Anheuser Busch and six generations of family women down to his granddaughter Lilly; Grant Grenache, which recalls President Ulysses S. Grant, previous owner of the ancestral home, Grant’s Farm, where Andy grew up and was manager for two decades; and August Red, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, named for his father and grandfather. Ballard Canyon Grenache and Syrah are following in late summer with more estate wines planned for 2018. Each bottle is a true reflection of the ranch and a tribute to the family and the legacy. ●
