Every December, something strange happens. We hit the final stretch of the year, and suddenly the air fills with peppermint, twinkle lights and an unspoken pressure to sprint. “Finish strong!” “Plan big!” “Tie up every loose end!” It’s like we collectively decide that the last four weeks of the year are an exam we forgot to study for.
But here’s the truth we rarely say out loud: December is not a finish line. It’s a bridge a sweet spot where one foot is in reflection, and the other is in possibility. It’s a month that invites us to look back, look ahead, and live right in the middle without burning ourselves out.
As Daniel Goleman talks about in his book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, we want productive reflection, not fruitless rumination; the difference being that the former is the process of actually solving the issue, not just getting stressed out thinking about the same thing over and over and over.
So how do you actually do that wrap up the year meaningfully, plant seeds for the next, and still enjoy the goodness of the season? Five thoughtful steps:
So many of us approach year-end reflection like an audit. We flip through goals we don’t remember setting, tally the things we “should have done,” and somehow conclude that we’re behind. That’s not reflection that’s rumination and a bit of punishment.
Try this instead: Look back with curiosity. How can you shine a light on what worked and what needs work? What surprised you this year? What grew in quiet ways you didn’t expect? Where did you show resilience or creativity? What did you say yes to that you’re grateful for? What did you say no to that protected you?
In Larry King’s book How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere, he explores that great conversations start with the desire to learn and be genuinely curious. There is no
better person to do this with than yourself!
This is a softer, more honest way of reviewing the year one that allows you to see your real progress, not just your unchecked boxes.
There’s a moment in December where you can almost feel the hinge of the year swinging. It’s a natural pause where you get to ask yourself: What’s worth carrying forward? And what can stay here?
Maybe you want to bring your morning walk into the new year, or the weekly dinner you finally started doing with your family. Perhaps you’re ready to leave behind the constant multitasking or the habit of checking your email at stoplights.
Think of yourself like a traveler packing a suitcase. The lighter you pack, the smoother the journey feels. In my work with many clients, we do an activity called “Start/ Stop/Continue.” What do you want to “start” (see number 3), what do you want to “stop” (see number 4), and what do you want to “continue”? Our inner wisdom knows what’s holding us back and what we need to do a little bit more of. See how many things you can write!
It’s tempting to map out Q1 like you’re building a rocket launch schedule. But the best planning this time of year doesn’t require color-coded Gantt charts. It’s simpler than that.
Pick three things your future self will thank you for. That’s it. Three.
Maybe it’s cleaning up your digital files. Maybe it’s sketching out a theme word for the year ahead. Maybe
it’s booking that dentist appointment or clearing the stack on your desk.
These little “starter seeds” create momentum without creating pressure. Think of them as a gentle nudge into January instead of a January overhaul. Then, as BJ Fogg discusses in his book Tiny Habits, whatever you said you were going to do, cut it in half, then cut that in half. Once you get your easy win, you can always do more!
Here’s the part we forget: The middle space matters just as much as the looking back and the looking ahead.
December is rich with built-in moments that don’t require striving lights on houses, family rituals, movie nights, small kindnesses, sweaters you forgot you loved. But we miss half of it because we’re trying to be everywhere and everything.
So, this year, try a tiny experiment: Subtract one thing. Say no to the event that drains you. Pick up an easy dinner instead of making the elaborate one. Let good-enough be good enough. Use a gift bag instead of tape and scissors and ribbons and bows.
The holidays were never meant to be a performance.
Finishing the year doesn’t need fireworks. It just needs intention. Let December be a month where you’re awake to your life not rushing past it. Wrap up what matters and set down what doesn’t, so that you can peek at the year ahead with hope, and leave room generous room for simple joy. After all, the magic of December isn’t in how much you accomplish. It’s in how much you actually get to feel.

On November 20 at Rincon Brewery, more than 125 supporters of the More Mesa Preservation Coalition (MMPC) celebrated the nonprofit’s 25th anniversary and launched its ambitious campaign to raise funds for the purchase of 270 acres of the treasured oceanfront property, which has gained urgency amid threats to its preservation. Guests included hikers, runners, dog walkers, birders, cyclists, and equestrians who regularly enjoy this magnificent space.
Rincon Brewery made a special Save More Mesa Blonde Ale, with all proceeds donated to MMPC. The cans sported artwork by Kevin Gleason a painting of the More Mesa bluffs and the original painting was auctioned off in support of MMPC.
In presenting an award to longtime MMPC Board President Valerie Olson, Assemblymember Gregg Hart thanked her for “keeping the torch alive for a really, really long time.” When Olson gave him a tour of More Mesa years ago, Hart related, the property, with its incredible resources, plant life, birds, and historical significance, captured his heart and attention.
He noted the tradition the South Coast community has of stepping up to preserve important places, from Carpinteria to Ellwood, including East Beach and Shoreline Park. Speaking with strong conviction, Hart declared that this is the moment to get the resources to preserve More Mesa for posterity and that this campaign is in fact achievable.
Most of the level mesa and the entire coastal blufftop are privately owned. A Saudi entity, Khalid Saud Al Shobily LLC, owns 265 acres. On the west end, the Pollard Family owns six acres. The County owns a 54-acre parcel to the northwest. The 265-acre parcel is currently listed for sale at $65 million. Saud Al Shobily purchased it in 2012 for $25 million.
On 40 acres on the east end of Saud Al Shobily’s land, County zoning allows for up to 70 homes to be built. This could impact major entrance trails, including at

Puente Drive, Vieja Drive, Mockingbird Lane, and Hope Ranch. Oak woodland and wetlands would be impacted, along with their sensitive wildlife.
According to MMPC Vice Chair Dan Gira, who has 40 years’ experience as a land use and environmental planner, including 20 with the county, the experience of recreational users would be disrupted for at least a decade by construction noise and trail rerouting and possible closures.
Neighbors would suffer from the noise and other unpleasantness of construction, and the views of some would be impacted. Wildlife in these adjacent areas would also be affected by noise, night lighting, and other disturbances from newly adjacent homes.
Another 12 homes are allowed to be built on a few acres on the west end. Similar impacts, Gira fears, could ensue from development in this area.
What’s worse is the possibility of even more development being allowed on these portions of the land, which MMPC fears could happen if the county is faced with state mandates for new high-density housing. With the county having targeted Goleta Valley farmland for its 2025 Housing Element to comply with state requirements, MMPC fears that if the state’s 2029 Regional Housing Allocation is as onerous as the 2025 mandate was, More Mesa could be targeted. Instead of the wild open space enjoyed by community members and wildlife today, the land could be covered with high-density housing.

The remainder of the land is designated as Environmentally Sensitive Habitat (ESH), which currently protects it from development, but MMPC is concerned that this could change. Pointing to recent legislation that has severely weakened the CA Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), Gira fears a similar fate for the Coastal Act, under which the ESH designation falls.
The Coastal Act has already been targeted for weakening of certain Commission review, Gira noted. “This

is exactly how changes to CEQA started limited and targeted at first, then very quickly much broader.” Moreover, Gira lamented, ESH designations can be changed at any time.

The unique properties of fungi are gaining traction in revolutionizing construction. When worked into composites, they offer strength, durability, light weight, fire-resistance, CO2 sequestration (almost a kilogram of CO2 per kilogram of material), invulnerability to pests, self-healing possibilities, and low cost. Mycelium is renewable and can grow from being fed bacteria or waste, frequently demolition waste or agricultural biproducts.
Mushroom roots provide mycelium, a substance made of fibers that, not surprisingly, resemble roots. It is the base of a new class of building products that are alive. Fungateria, a European Union research initiative bringing together scientists from many European countries, has the goal to create engineered living materials (ELMs) that don’t just exist in the built environment but actively participate in it. These researchers are developing materials that can grow, heal themselves, and even sense changes in their environment. Some believe it is possible to reactivate dormant mycelium so that composites can heal cracks or repair damage and wear.
Some of the most successful myceliumbased composites are:
• Mycecrete, a material that is strong and super-versatile, made from mycelium and knitted molds or textiles.
• Myco-bricks and panels are made by bonding mycelium with agricultural waste. The bricks are 60 times lighter than industry standard clay or concrete masonry blocks.
• Mycelium-based insulation has an insulative value comparable to polystyrene. It also attenuates sound.
In growing composites, mycelium can consume wood, tiles, and asphalt as a food source. It breaks down toxins in the process. The mycelium has natural glue properties, which bind particles together. This process emits minimal greenhouse gases while upcycling waste stocks as food inputs. At the end of life of any of these products, they can be composted, closing the loop on construction waste. Being completely renewable and biodegradable, these processes offer a model for the circular economy.
To prevent fungi composites from going rogue in the manufacturing process, controlling fungal growth is essential. Two
methods of control are used: (1) manipulating growth through light and temperature, and (2) using specially engineered bacteria. The bacteria feed the fungus essential nutrients, and when they are removed or destroyed, growth stops.
Mushroom-based materials are showing great promise but also face challenges. Growing mycelium takes days to weeks, creating production scale and speed issues. Tensile strength is good, but compressive strength does not yet equal that of concrete. Standardization is needed to become mainstream in construction. Mycelium can degrade under high humidity unless treated. Scientists are exploring genetic and process engineering to solve these hurdles.

is facing more extreme weather, this is a hopeful sign, especially considering the many positive attributes of myceliumbased composites.
In a short amount of time, great strides have been made in developing fungi-based construction materials. Thus far, these fungal materials have shown impressive resilience, withstanding drought and high temperatures. Considering that the world
