Midlife Tooth Loss Associated With Higher Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease, Research Suggests
M
edical News Today (3/23, Paddock) reported that preliminary research found “tooth loss in middle age is tied to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, independent of traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure, poor diet, and diabetes.” Study co-author Lu Qi, who is a professor of epidemiology at Tulane University, said, “Our findings suggest that middle-aged adults who have lost two or more teeth in [the] recent past could be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.” The study is not yet published but the abstract is available in the journal Circulation. “This pattern is concerning, given that
HPV Causing “Epidemic Of Oral Cancer” In Men
T
he Philadelphia Inquirer (3/6, McCullough) reports
that HPV is “unleashing an epidemic of oral cancer among men.” The article reports that “men are four times more likely than women to be diagnosed with oral cancer,” which has “overtaken cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States.” The article states that this trend is due in part to men’s immune response, explaining that “compared with women, men are more likely to get infected with HPV – including ‘high-risk’ cancercausing strains,” and “they also are less able to wipe out infection on their own, and more likely to get reinfected.” The authors of one study examining HPV in men, said, “HPV vaccination is the only reliable method to ensure immune protection against new HPV infections and subsequent disease in males.”

People With Diabetes Visit Dentist Less Often, Study Finds
I
n a news release on its website, New York University (4/2) states that a new study led by researchers at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine found “adults with diabetes are less likely to visit the dentist than people with prediabetes or without diabetes.” The study “showed an overall decline in dental visits among adults with and without diabetes, but people with diabetes were consistently the least likely to obtain oral healthcare.” The findings were published in The Journal of the American Dental Association.

Like many of you, I strive to be more eco-conscious in my day-to-day living. As technology advances and environmental scientists continue to show how our behaviors, both past and present, have threatened our environment, I’ve tried to pivot my lifestyle towards a more eco-friendly way of living. For example, I’ve recently stopped purchasing a number of single-use plastic items. Instead of purchasing cases of bottled water, I’ve started using a S’well bottle. Instead of using Keurig coffee pods (which are horrible for the environment), I’ve been using Keurig’s reusable coffee filter with my own ground coffee. I’ve become incredibly conscious of how food is packaged and try to avoid any items encased in too much plastic. Overall, it’s been a painless shift. Some things you can’t avoid, but making these small changes has significantly shrunk my plastic footprint. The damage caused by single-use plastics holds significant importance to San Pedro since we’re a coastal community, and these plastics do incredible damage to our oceans. According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, Americans discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year, with only 8 percent of it being recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, where the toxic chemicals seep into groundwater and eventually flow downstream into lakes, rivers, and oceans. In other words, it’s seeping right into our own oceanic backyard. The damage these plastics do to our oceans, and in turn to us, is horrific. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, in the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments – like grocery bags, straws and soda bottles – are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day. Today, billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences making up about 40 percent of the world's ocean surfaces. That is insane. Of course, this pollution has had a damaging effect on wildlife, which ends with its damage to humans. When plastics break apart in the ocean, fish
and other wildlife mistake it for food, and when it’s ingested it immediately contaminates the food chain, thus ending up in our kitchens, and ultimately our bodies. As the home to AltaSea and now SpaceX, our community needs to lead by example to curb the usage of single-use plastics. After all, if we’re to become the hub of aquaculture advancement and maritime science, San Pedro needs to change with the times. This type of pollution affects all of us. Last month, I was heartened to see the San Pedro Brewing Company step up and stop automatically serving plastic straws with their beverages. They’re now available by request only. Of course, the ideal situation is that all local restaurants stop offering plastic straws altogether and offer alternatives such as paper straws instead, but that will take time and money to implement (paper straws tend to cost more than plastic). Kudos to James Brown and the Brew Co. for leading by example. Let’s hope other local restaurants follow suit. Here are a few ways we, as individuals, can lead the charge. 1.) When dining out, politely decline plastic straws and instead make a request to management to stop using plastic and switch to paper. 2.) Become eco-conscious of food packaging and purchase those that use little to no plastic. 3.) Stop using plastic to-go utensils, and instead carry a set of your own reusable ones. 4.) Recycle, recycle, recycle. There are myriad other ways to make a positive change. As we settle into summer in San Pedro and start hitting the beach, let’s not forget that the ocean is San Pedro’s lifeblood. It has fueled our former fishing industry, our current container industry, and our future aquaculture industry. Let’s do our part to protect it for future generations of San Pedrans. HARBOR HOF GOES A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY by Steve Marconi Getting countrywestern star Derek Sholl to perform at this year’s Harbor College Athletic Hall of Fame event was easy; he volunteered after he was told he was going to be inducted. Sholl, a two-sport star for the Seahawks before launching into a successful music career, is one of eight individuals who will be inducted along with the 1969 football team at the 11th annual event Sept. 21, at the DalmatianAmerican Club. Two months later, the San Pedro High School Athletic Hall of Fame will have its fifth annual event at the same venue, honoring 35 individuals, the 1961 boys track and field team, and the 1983 City champion boys volleyball team. Individual honorees joining Sholl (1986-87) in this year’s Harbor College class are Nick Ekbatani (2005), football; Buster Ellis (1954-55), football and track; Dave Gascon (1967-69),
meritorious service; Bob Gauci (1979), meritorious service; Michael Mendoza (1981-82), football; Ed Railsback (196465), lifetime achievement; and Mike Walsh (1972-73), lifetime achievement. Ekbatani, a South Torrance product, was an offensive tackle at Harbor before receiving a full-ride scholarship to UCLA. He started for the Bruins as a junior and senior. In 2012, he was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident that cost him half a leg, and today is a nationally renowned physical trainer and motivational speaker. Railsback overcame his own disability, a leg crippled by a childhood bout with polio, to star as a lineman at Gardena High before becoming a key player on Harbor’s undefeated and untied 1964 Hall of Fame team. He went on to a successful prep coaching career in Paso Robles. Mendoza, a Bishop Montgomery product, broke most of Harbor’s singleseason passing records in 1982 while leading the Seahawks to a second consecutive conference title and victory in the Lions Bowl. Walsh, a San Pedro High Hall of

Fame member, was an undersized all-conference offensive guard for the Seahawks before returning to his alma mater and coaching the Pirates to five City football championships. Ellis and Gauci are posthumous inductees. Ellis came to Harbor unheralded in football but became an All-American as a two-way performer at wide receiver and defensive back. He also lettered two years in track, where he starred in the high jump. Gauci, from North Torrance, played baseball one season for Harbor, and after a stint in the minor leagues, returned to assist Jim O’Brien on the 1987 and 1988 conference champion teams. He also served as hitting instructor for the 2005 Seahawks before his untimely death at 44. Sholl came to Harbor from South Torrance and was all-conference in football and baseball. His hitting and defensive play in centerfield helped the Seahawks to back-to-back conference titles; he was named second team AllState and second team All-American. A torn Achilles tendon in the minor leagues ended his dreams of a pro baseball career, so he traded in his bat for a guitar and began a gradual climb to fame in the country-western world. He’s produced three albums and was the opening act for Jay Leno for three years at the Mirage in Las Vegas. The 1969 Harbor football team rolled to an 8-1 regular season record, marred only by a controversial one-point loss to Orange Coast, and won the Southern California Conference championship. The Seahawks entered the state playoffs ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the nation but found themselves playing on the road in the opening round against defending state champion Fresno City College. With leading rusher George Lumpkin hobbled by an injury, Harbor lost; the Rams went on to win their second consecutive title. The Seahawks were led by Hall of Fame members Jimmy Sander (Carson) at quarterback and Dick Rupert (Westchester) at offensive tackle, both first-team JC All-Americans. Two other HOF members were freshmen Bob Thornton (Narbonne) and Bobby Ramirez (San Pedro), who both doubled up at wide receiver and defensive back. Other San Pedro High products such as Bob Bradarich, Tony Sogliuzzo, Greg Howit, Ed Rozeski and Fermin Lasuen’s Pete Favazza played key roles on both lines. Coach Scrappy Rhea, assisted by Gordon Wells, Don Carlucci, Ernie Simon and Bill Young, all deceased, molded them along with a host of other former Marine League rivals into one of the nation’s top teams. The HOF committee is asking for the public’s

Siblings being inducted are the Cantu sisters – Debbie (1972), tennis/softball/ basketball; Kathy (1973), tennis/softball/ basketball/volleyball; and Christine (1975), volleyball/basketball; the Olguin brothers, all three of whom were team captains in football – Tony (W`61), Leonard (S`65), and Fred (S`68); and the Garneau brothers – Dustin (2005), football; Jason (2007), football/baseball; and Dylan (2012), football/baseball. This year’s honored families are the Moores – Allan (1956), baseball/ football, and his daughter, Meagan (1989), softball; the baseball-playing Cootes – Roy (S`50) and his sons, Roy Jr. (1979) and Gary (1980); and the Samudios – Richard (1980), basketball, and his children, Melissa (2004), softball; Vanessa (2007), softball; and Richard Jr. (2013), baseball. Being inducted for lifetime achievement are George Padovan (1951), Steve Schiazzano (W`66), Geoff Martinez (1974), Jerry Marsee (1987), and coach Richard Deemar, whose volleyball teams were undefeated in league play for 10 seasons. Posthumous inductees are Wilbert “Buddy” Parks, Art Paulsen, Victor “Kid” Ponce, Don Gregory, Tony Perkov Jr., and longtime track and field coach, Robert Stegmiller. SPACE & SEA EXPLORATION by Anthony Pirozzi “Promises made, promises kept” is a phrase many use to describe the importance of commitment and follow through. I always like to say that anyone can commit to something, but the follow through is what counts. Today, many past commitments are taking hold and the follow through is occurring with increased momentum. For example, four years ago this month, I urged my Harbor Commission colleagues to amend the 2014/2015 fiscal budget to include $1.3 million dollars to begin the engineering process for the realignment of Sampson Way, because I believed this was a critical first step to beginning the redevelopment of Ports O’ Call. With my commission colleagues' support, the amendment passed. On June 7, we will be celebrating the completion of this realignment project with a ribbon cutting event with the community, councilman, and our port leadership team. Our waterfront redevelopment efforts continue to gain momentum as the Port, Harbor Commission, councilman, and mayor have not wavered on moving the ball forward to redevelop Ports O’ Call. This momentum has translated into the most recent efforts to begin the demolition phase to make way for the waterfront promenade, as well as the first phase of the San Pedro Public Market. Although Acapulco, the Marina restaurant, and Ports O’ Call Village are gone, many in town still do not realize that this project is actually underway. So, I encourage you to take a ride and take a look because it is real. Another key element of transforming our waterfront has been to augment the current jobs with a new set of job opportunities for the future. I remember having conversations a decade ago with fellow work colleagues and local leaders about connecting aerospace to the port. I thought it to be a long shot, but not impossible, so I never gave up on this vision. Fast-forward to today, and we see the announcement by the port that SpaceX will build a rocket assembly facility on the former Southwest Marine site on Terminal Island. will not only bring 700 news jobs to our waterfront, but solidifies the Port of Los Angeles as a spaceport and puts us on the map as a contributor to the exploration of the final frontier that is space. It is an amazing opportunity for all of us to say we are part of it. An additional element of exploration to our port is that of the deep sea. AltaSea is developing a new model for ocean-related science, business, and education, and creating a place where innovators collaborate to develop solutions critical to the survival of the earth and its inhabitants. Along with additions to the site, like the Titanic discoverer Robert Ballard and his Nautilus ship, the Boeing-built Echo Voyager will leverage the site for its deep-sea exploration missions. Echo Voyager is the newest member to join Boeing’s unmanned undersea vehicle family. The 51-foot vehicle is designed to stay underwater for months at a time. Boeing has designed and operated, manned and unmanned deep-sea systems since the 1960s. The presence of both Boeing and SpaceX exceeds all expectations of my personal vision to see the aerospace industry in the port, let alone in San Pedro. Being part of a great team of leaders to enable this into reality is icing on the cake. We are seeing an amazing turn of events in town and we are just getting started. All of this will transpose our local economy and take us to the next level of prosperity. New high tech paying jobs means a demand for housing, restaurants, hotels, breweries, shopping, medical services, and an improvement in our education system to prepare our local youth to be qualified for such evolving careers on our waterfront. Although we all know there is much to do to improve, and we can all point to obvious examples of this, I would encourage you to pick your head up, see the change that is in front of us, and begin to ask ourselves, “Why not us?” Never before in our recent history have we seen or experienced such a paradigm shift taking place locally. SPHS’S GOLDEN PIRATE REGIMENT BAND DIRECTOR, DARNELLA DAVIDSON, RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR by Caitlyn Trudnich On May 15, the Country Music Association honored 34 of the nation’s most distinguished educators at the Music Teachers of Excellence Awards, held at Marathon Music Works in Nashville. Among those celebrated was Darnella Davidson, San Pedro High School music teacher and Golden Pirate Regiment band leader. “She embodies excellence in music education, and is ensuring the future with great music, and musicians, for generations to come,” says San Pedro High School Principal, Jeanette Stevens. “Her commitment to educating in the arts is admirable and well-respected by the Country Music Association Foundation.”

With a motto of “No excuses, just results,” Davidson has had an exemplary career. Teaching previously at Los Angeles High School, Davison was welcomed to the teaching staff in 2015, and her influence and leadership has been highly notable. In addition to the school’s marching band being hailed as not only a fan favorite, performing regularly at school sports and community events, the Golden Pirate Regiment has also earned many awards, including the title of best in city and in Southern California for three consecutive years, which brings her total to 28 consecutive city championships for L.A. Unified schools.
CMA Director of Community Outreach, Tiffany Kerns, also was taken by Davidson’s dedication to music education. In a letter commending Davidson’s selection, she explains, “Your willingness to ensure every child has an opportunity to participate in music – even in challenging circumstances – makes you an incredible asset to your school and community.” Along with the incredible accolades, Davidson was also awarded a $5,000 prize for classroom needs and professional development.
"The fact that they awarded this on National Teacher Appreciation Day is pretty special,” says Davison. “I feel quite blessed and honored and humbled to receive this award.” Davidson also shared her gratitude to the CMA, saying, “They understand how important music appreciation is.” She continues, "For them to be bold enough to give this award out – not for promoting country music, which is the largest-selling genre of music, but because I’m a music teacher – I think is very significant and bold. SAN PEDRAN NAMED USCG’S ENLISTED PERSON OF THE YEAR by SPT Staff There’s a traditional Hawaiian saying: `A`ohe lokomaika`i i nele i ke pâna`I, which translated means, No kind deed has ever lacked its reward. For Tara Molle, participating in public service has been a fulfilling opportunity of a lifetime. Before joining the Coast Guard in 2003, San Pedro-native Molle initially intended to major in sociology at El Camino College. However, she soon found a career that would really take her places. “I felt like something else was calling me in life,” recalls Molle. After sharing her thoughts with her parents, Molle’s step dad, Peter, suggested the possible option of a public affairs role within the Coast Guard. “At the time, I wasn’t very familiar with the Coast Guard or its missions, but I knew they were a branch of the military,” says Molle. Intrigued and eager to learn more, Molle and her family visited a local Coast Guard recruiter, who explained more about what they do, specifically
18 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I JUNE 2018
their opportunities within public affairs. “In a nutshell, [the Coast Guard’s public affairs role] is similar to that of a photojournalist. I learned that they were the storytellers taking photos, video, writing stories, and being a spokesperson on the news when important things happened.” Molle decided that this was the field for her, and began the recruiting process, which included attending boot camp. Now approaching her fifteenth year within the Coast Guard, with twelve served as a public affairs specialist, Molle will soon advance to the rank of E-6 or Petty Officer 1st Class, later this year. After being stationed for the last five years in Hawaii, Molle was recently surprised with a special honor from her peers. On April 6, Molle was selected as the Coast Guard Enlisted Person of the Year for her staff, as well as all of District 14, and honored with an awards ceremony and banquet at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. “I'm already

an emotional person, but with that news, I immediately started crying,” says Molle. “To say it's an honor is an understatement. I truly love what I do as a PA, and especially as a Coast Guardsman, so being recognized for something as amazing as that was one of proudest moments of my life.” Not long after the special occasion, Molle was transferred from Hawaii to a new position in Washington, D.C., where she will be the photographer for the United States Secretary of Homeland Security. “As excited as I am for my new position, leaving Hawaii was beyond bittersweet,” says Molle. Looking through a new lens, Molle continues to enjoy her career within the Coast Guard and credits her love
for her community of servicemen and women to her community back home in San Pedro. “Being Italian, a Mary Star alumnus, and especially being from San Pedro, having that small, tight-knit family-like experience was so important to me,” says Molle. “No matter where I travel or get transferred to, I almost always know someone who I used to be stationed with.” Molle hopes to continue sharing her talents in photojournalism and contribute to her country, saying, “I am proud to serve in such a unique branch that are known as 'lifesavers,' and tell the stories of all my shipmates who do incredible things every single day.” spt

NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL SAN PEDRO MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERS ENTRÉES WITH A SIDE OF CONGENIALITY by Caitlyn Trudnich
Driving around town, Barbara and Barbara (yes, two Barbs) have their route down to a science. Today, they’ll be bringing lunch and dinner to clients of San Pedro Meals on Wheels. As I accompany the team of volunteers on the day’s deliveries, I am also briefed on every client. What foods they like best. How long they’ve been a part of the program. I’m introduced to their children, caretakers, and even their pets. With a friendly knock on the door, we are greeted with grateful smiles. One of the Barbaras instantly strikes up a conversation with the client, always asking them how they are doing. From the first home on our stop, it is very clear that San Pedro Meals on Wheels is more than a food delivery service, it’s a community within a community. A program that provides not only food, but a sense of companionship, and the security in knowing that you or your loved ones are cared for. For just seven dollars and fifty cents a day, clients receive more than just meals, they receive nourishment for the soul. “Volunteers are the backbone and spirit of the organization, and their enthusiasm and dedication reach our clients at their doors every day,” says William McKenna, board member and youngest volunteer of the program. He, along with his mother Susan, are two of the many hardworking individuals that devote their time and efforts to making the San Pedro Meals on Wheels program run efficiently. “Meals on Wheels really is a worldwide phenomenon,” says Susan. “And yet, at the same time, it’s also a sort of hidden service, particularly in San Pedro.” Founded in 1972, the San Pedro Meals on Wheels program began with volunteers from Church Women United, First Methodist Church, and First Presbyterian Church, the latter of which their headquarters and kitchen remain today. Since their beginning, 32 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I JUNE 2018
the nonprofit organization has always maintained their mission to provide nutritious, affordable meals to those unable to obtain a healthy meal on a regular basis. The program offers delivery of two meals a day, Monday through Friday, consisting of a sack lunch, and a hot-plated dinner. Today, with so many delivery-based options, even with such affordable pricing, oftentimes the Meals on Wheels program can be overlooked. However, it’s that personal connection with someone that sets them apart from others. San Pedro Meals on Wheels integrally has heart and witnessing their positive effect on clients is truly inspiring. “There’s certainly a difference between reading about our service and seeing it firsthand,” says William. “I remember learning about San Pedro Meals on Wheels at our first few board meetings, but it wasn’t until doing my first ride-along doing deliveries that I saw the magic of it all.” He continues, “Watching the meals being prepared, packaged, and sorted with factory floor precision was exciting. Chatting with the volunteers in the car was great fun. And visiting the clients was easily my favorite part.” One touching example of the magic is client, Della. At 101 years old, Della greets the volunteers with a warm smile and a charming demeanor. The convenience of the delivered meals is a blessing, as is the company. When asked how she likes the program, she sweetly responds, “It’s just wonderful. I love the food, it’s just perfect for a 101 year old!” Client satisfaction is of upmost importance to the San Pedro Meals on Wheels team. Executive Chef, Mike Caccavalla, is constantly menu planning and in the kitchen five days a week, creating nutritiously balanced and diverse meals for clients, as well as overseeing teams of volunteers and delegating tasks. Gloria, also processes all incoming inquiries and client accounts with precision, assisting delivery drivers with organized routes for their daily deliveries, as well as often reminding volunteers of a client’s birthday. Currently delivering meals to 75 clients, the program is seeking more exposure, hoping to encourage more members of the local community to volunteer, as well as more monetary support to help continue their important work. In addition to officially joining Meals on Wheels America, as well as becoming members of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, another exciting step towards spreading the word has been the creation of a GoFundMe campaign. “Our organization is incredibly frugal, as we have such a tight budget,” says William. “Sometimes that means that a shock to the system, such as a lack of consistent fundraising, can have a big effect on our organization’s health. So, when reviewing the numbers at one of our board meetings, we decided that we needed to do a ‘flash fundraiser’ to quickly raise funds for some very important items, and just as importantly to reintroduce ourselves to the community.” With goals including a revamp of their food and supply pantry, kitchen equipment repairs, and outreach and marketing expenses, the idea has proved so-far successful, as they are close to reaching their fundraising goal of $10,000. “We are incredibly thrilled with the
community’s response,” William says enthusiastically. “We’ve received about 100 donations, totaling near $8,000, which for our organization, goes a long way.” San Pedro Meals on Wheels was also recently honored with Nonprofit of the Year by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, a recognition that is well deserved. Although their fundraising efforts are off to a solid start, San Pedro Meals on Wheels needs the community’s support. “Senior food insecurity is a huge issue,” says Susan. “We don’t see seniors lining up at the soup kitchens frequently, as they are often homebound. We can easily not see the difficulties people are having to feed themselves.” The local organization looks toward the future, with hopes to one day expand their delivery reach, as well as offer weekend meals. “We want a vital fundraising operation,” Susan explains. “And as many clients as we can reach to continue serving yummy and nutritious meals, and have our community know that we will always be there for them.” spt For more information on San Pedro Meals on Wheels, including inquiries on signing up or volunteering, call (310) 832-7335 or email: sanpedromealsonwheels@gmail.com. BACK TO SCHOOL SAN PEDRO TODAY'S HISTORIAN HITS THE BOOKS AND DISCOVERS THAT THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT by Angela “Romee” Romero
Forty years ago, this month, I attended my first high school graduation as an unofficial member of San Pedro High School’s Genesis Class of 1978. Sure, I was in utero, but it’s still the closest I ever got to receiving a PHD (Pedro High Diploma). This year, I made the decision to get a lot closer to finally getting my bachelor’s degree and went back to school. Deciding to go back to school full-time after a 16-year break is not something I do lightly. It was actually all of my local history work that pushed me to do it. I’m fortunate to have put in the legwork, literally, over the last nine years, building a reputation as a trusted local historian. But San Pedro deserves a legit historian. Big changes are coming to town, and we need to make sure that our history is preserved for and taught to future generations. Sign. Me. Up. In order to switch my major to history and transfer to a university, I enrolled at L.A. Harbor College to take six history classes over two semesters. I’m not crazy, so I took two history courses this semester, and opted to add a drawing and speech class to ease my way back into academic life. These two classes had offerings off-campus in San Pedro, the drawing at 7:30a at San
Pedro High’s Olguin campus and the speech class at 5:30p at the local Boys & Girls Club. As one of those San Pedrans who hates leaving town, I jumped at the chance to take classes close to home. The location of the classes gave me no hint to the surprise I would find on the first day of school, although it really should have. After all, Marymount used to hold classes at the Olguin campus, and surely the Boys & Girls Club can serve as a community center for adults to take classes. No, these were college classes for high school students. I was the only adult in the drawing class and one of four in the speech class. I started every Tuesday and Thursday with SPHS kids at Olguin campus and ended it with kids from Baxter and POLAHS at the Boys & Girls Club. I could have transferred out of the classes and found sections at Harbor that were a little more grown up, but I didn’t. These kids are why I’m going back to school. I wanted to see what they were like, so could learn to engage with them better. You can learn a lot about people over the course of sixteen weeks. I wish I could say I was one of those older student types from the movies

Following up last year’s eventful signing day ceremonies, the 20172018 school year has once again hit it big with several more college-bound athletes, hailing from both San Pedro and Port of Los Angeles High Schools. First to sign was San Pedro High softball senior catcher, Anessa Quiroz. On November 8, 2017, Quiroz made her early choice, signing her national letter of intent to play collegiate softball at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York. Quiroz has made tremendous impacts at both POLA and SPHS, however her prep career thrived after transferring school and joining the Pirates in 2015, helping the decorated program capture the 2017 Marine League and CIFLos Angeles City Section Division I championships. Quiroz has hit nine home runs thus far in 2018 and helped lead the Pirates to reach the inaugural CIF-LACS Open Division semifinals at press time. In love with New York’s atmosphere, Quiroz didn't hesitate to sign with Monroe College. “After I went to go visit the school, it was beautiful and I fell in love with it,” says Quiroz. “They also have my major, social services." Quiroz also is eager to work with new coach, Katie Jansson, saying, "What got me hooked [on Monroe College] was talking to and meeting with the coach. She's everything I look for in a coach." women's soccer at Marymount California University. Earlier this season, Delgado, who helped POLA win the 2017 CIF-LACS Division 2 championship, also broke Nikki Bonilla's five-year school record for goals in a game, as she would score an astonishing seven times in a 14-0 Crosstown League victory over Ánimo South Los Angeles. Within her prep career, Delgado remained consistent, with 42 goals and 44 assists, with her assist total being third all-time in school history. Choosing Marymount California was a pretty simple one for Delgado. "At MCU, I was comfortable with the distance from home and the campus," she explains. "I've known their head coach for quite some time now, and I feel like it would be a great fit for me academically and through soccer as well." On February 7, the SPHS football program had a great day, as three senior players signed on to further their academic and athletic careers through collegiate football.
Defensive back, Corey Fausto, signed on to play at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, while offensive lineman, Kenny Howard, signed with Benedictine University in Kansas, and wide receiver, Joshua Bejarano, signed to play at Mayville State University in North Dakota. Fausto had a great final year for the Pirates, catching 29 passes for 627 yards, and nine touchdowns, averaging 21.6 yards per catch. While on defense, Fausto registered 71 tackles, an interception, two pass deflections, and a forced fumble, making All-Marine League all three years on varsity, as well as being named 2017’s Marine League All-Purpose Player of the Year. Howard made the All-Marine League and All-City teams for two straight seasons, and Bejarano caught two passes for 21 yards in 2017, also caught a touchdown pass during the 2016 season. At the John M. & Muriel Olguin Campus, five more student athletes signed on the dotted line at another signing day ceremony, held on May
3. These athletes included senior swimmers, Audrey Steen and Sebastian Wagoner, boys’ soccer wing player, Seth Turner, girls soccer goalkeeper, Carlene Luna, and girls cross-country and track runner, Perla Aguilar. Steen, one of the most accomplished swimmers San Pedro has had in quite some time, will attend Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Wagoner, another talented swimmer, is headed to Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois. Turner, who focused solely on club soccer while the current San Pedro boys soccer team captured the CIF-LACS Division 4 title in March, signed on to play in the Big Ten Conference at Rutgers University. Luna, a fearless and determined goalie, helped San Pedro capture four straight unbeaten Marine League championships and reach the 2018 CIF-LACS Division I semifinals, and is headed to Cal State University San Bernardino. Aguilar, the latest in a long line of great cross-country and track distance runners in San Pedro history, will be attending UC Irvine. spt

To say it’s an interesting time in San Pedro’s history would be an understatement, especially when examining the dynamics of our local real estate market. What’s happening with our real estate market in San Pedro? How will future developments, including the L.A. Waterfront, AltaSea, and other projects, impact prices in our area? Is the fate of San Pedro finally looking up after years of false hopes and economic stagnation? Is it possible that we become the next real estate hot spot, like El Segundo, Playa Del Rey and Inglewood have due to major developments and the influx of technology-based businesses? These are all questions we’re asking here in town. Over the last couple of months, we’ve noticed some interesting trends, so we began informally tracking numbers and opinions from people that visit our open houses; asking where they were currently living, why they were looking in the area, and their overall opinion of San Pedro. Interestingly, we were finding more and more people coming from out of the area to investigate real estate in San Pedro. Sure, we encountered many long-time local residents looking to move for various reasons, but nearly 50% of the people we queried were from outside areas. The obvious question was why? Why would any of these people come to San Pedro to view real estate when they were already living in “nice” areas? The most common answers: affordability, draw of the coastline and San Pedro’s prospects for future growth potential. As one couple put it, “We can’t afford to touch anything in the South Bay near the water, so we began expanding our search into San Pedro.” Another open house visitor exclaimed, “I hear positive things about the future of San Pedro and ongoing developments, so I felt I should come check out homes before prices escalate out of my reach.” Is it possible that these new development projects can change the economic and demographic landscape of our multi-cultural and multi-generational melting pot in San Pedro? We can’t say for certain, but the reality is that we see our town evolving in many ways. There is no question that we have our share of issues that one could attribute
to being part of the behemoth that is the City of Los Angeles. Homelessness, vagrancy, public drug abuse, crime and insufficient law enforcement presence, among other issues, remain as pressing challenges we face as a community. However, the sense of community and pride in San Pedro remain strong with optimism for positive change evident. It’s also clear that certain outside businesses, developers, and people from other areas view San Pedro as an opportunity area. Residential real estate remains strong in San Pedro, with demand outpacing existing inventory levels. This can also be said for the entire South Bay. The average sales price for a single-family residence in San Pedro over the last six months was approx. $683,000 (based on local MLS stats). During the same period last year, the average sales price was approx. $647,000, which is an increase of just over 5% (year over year). This is the highest we’ve seen prices in our area since 2006. The average sales price in San Pedro pales in comparison to other coastal areas, such as El Segundo and Playa Del Rey. These cities have experienced substantial transformational growth and change over recent years, due mainly to technology-based start up growth in the area. The average sales price (over the last six months) for a single-family residence in El Segundo was just over $1.4 million and Playa Del Rey was upwards of $1.86 million (based on local MLS stats). In comparison, San Pedro real estate remains a great value. With big questions remaining and challenges ahead, we wonder what the future will bring for San Pedro. Will announcements by SpaceX and Boeing to occupy space in our port and waterfront development lure other technologybased businesses and entrepreneurial risk takers to our area due to its affordability, location, and growth potential? Will San Pedro be the next coastal city in line to receive a slick catchphrase, such as Silicon Beach? Could we be on the brink of our own Boom Harbor? On May 1, Hawaii became the first state to pass a bill that would ban the sale of sunscreen products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals that have been linked to the bleaching of coral reefs and the destruction of other ocean wildlife. If signed by the governor, the law will go into effect on January 1, 2021. In particular, the bill addresses the toxic effect sunscreen chemicals have on our marine ecosystem. Multiple studies have shown just how harmful these products can be, estimating that up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen are deposited in our oceans every year, releasing chemicals that are toxic to coral reefs and other marine life, with the greatest damage being found in Hawaii and the Caribbean. And as we know, the dangers associated with chemical sunscreens don’t stop here. Their effects on human health are also of great concern. Chemical sunscreens (like oxybenzone and octinoxate) along with other common sunscreen product ingredients, such as parabens and retinyl palmitate, have been linked to hormone disruption, allergic skin reactions, and even increased cancer risk. As it turns out, the products we think are protecting us could actually be doing more harm than good. So, what methods of sun protection should we be using? Here are some safer sun protection options that might come in handy as we approach the summer season: Mineral Sunscreens – Mineral sunscreens use active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which physically block out UV rays. As long they contain non-nano particles, they
do not penetrate the skin, like chemical sunscreens do, and are considered safer options for both human health and the environment. Some brands that offer safer mineral sunscreen options are Raw Elements, Thinksport, Laguna Herbals, and Beautycounter, just to name a few. Many health-conscious brands will also omit other potentially harmful ingredients, such as parabens, synthetic fragrance, and retinyl palmitate, so be sure to check ingredient labels. Sun Protective Clothing and Hats – You can never go wrong by covering up with clothing and hats. Companies such as Coolibar, Patagonia, and REI make clothing with built in UPF protection (UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures the level of protection the same way SPF does in sunscreen products). Wearing sun protective clothing will reduce the need for sunscreen, and in turn, can help reduce our exposure to potentially harmful toxins, benefitting our health and the environment. Natural Sunscreens (Plant Oils) – There are some plant oils that provide natural sun protection, while also providing additional health benefits. Red raspberry seed oil, for example, has an estimated SPF of 28-50, and protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Carrot seed oil has an estimated SPF of 38-40, but only protects against UVB rays. Regardless of which plant oil you choose, please proceed with caution and do your research first, as the protection factor will depend on the quality of the oil. For the safest broad-spectrum protection, it would be ideal to mix one of these oils with a non-nano zinc oxide. Managing Your Time in the Sun – Ultimately, let’s not forget that some sun exposure without sunscreen is actually healthy for us in reasonable doses. This is particularly important for the production of vitamin D, which is critical to our health. The key is to get a responsible amount of daily sun exposure without burning. Therefore, the recommended amount of time to spend in the sun will vary from person to person (fair-skinned folk will typically need to get out of the sun much sooner than those with darker complexions. HOW TO LEARN THE HARD WAY

by Ricky Magana The most valuable lessons in life always feel like a waste of time. When we’re too young and dumb (or both) to see otherwise. It isn’t until later when we’ve learned the hard way to appreciate what was taught to us before but were too hard-headed to listen. We’ve seen it a hundred times; teacher instructing student, “Wax on, wax off, Daniel-san. Wax on, wax off.” And so, the young, unwilling student, rolls his eyes upset because he wanted to learn all the cool stuff. He wants the short cuts. Come on, sensei. Get to the back flips and roundhouse kicks. Sooner or later the young, immature padawan has had it and he storms off. In the legendary movie Karate Kid, we know that the stupid chore of waxing on and off proved to be an essential defensive skill Daniel-san unconsciously honed over thousands of reps. It wasn’t until he needed it did he realize how valuable the skill was. Such is often the case with our fathers, isn’t it? As a teenager, no one seems to realize we know everything, especially our dads. So they ride us, prod, and won’t get off our damn cases. I can still hear it now, “We can do this the easy way, or the hard way.” “Look me in the eye.” “Say thank you.” “Get off the couch.” “Get a job.” “Wake up.” “Work hard.” “Save your money.” If you’re like me, I wish I could say thank you to my father a few more times for telling me all the things I didn’t want to hear. For being way more patient with me than I ever deserved. Given that Father’s Day is this month, I figured I’d share some lessons that I (and probably many of you) learned from my dad that, if applied to fitness, will serve you well. Stay cool. Life will throw many curve balls at you. It will not go as planned and will not be fair. Regardless, you have to adapt, roll with the punches, and make them wonder why you’re still smiling. Don’t complain. Complaining is infectious. It gets on those around you
and starts to paint your perceptions. If unchecked, you will quickly find a reason to cry about anything, and, in turn, do nothing. Instead, don’t whine about the problem. Propose solutions and take action. Do your best. Don’t shortcut the process. Do it right the first time. You can’t expect it to be perfect and you aren't entitled to a medal. But if you always do what you can to the best of your ability, you will always surprise yourself at what you’re capable of. Be useful. My dad worked until he retired, then he got another job. He didn’t exercise per se, but he couldn’t handle not doing something productive. Idleness spooked him. He always looks for something to do. Activity, action, and contribution burns lots of calories. In fitness, as in life, there are lessons like these that we refuse to learn. Something that we might know but pretend not to because we think “our way” is better. You ever feel like you’re constantly struggling with the same problem? The same 20 pounds you lose and gain over and over again. The shoulder you keep re-injuring. The monkey on your back that just won’t go away? Is there something in your life that you’re pretending to not know? A hard lesson you’re refusing to learn? My theory is, God will just keep throwing the same problems at us until we get it through our thick skulls. The thing I love most about the gym, and our fitness journey in general, is that the small problems (and victories) we face in our diets and our workouts often manifest in our life outside the gym. So if you can conquer them “in here,” you can conquer them “out there.” So, go back to the basics. Think deep on the lessons your father, or whichever mentor in your life has guided you, and thank them for telling you what you didn’t always want to hear. And if right now you’re in the middle of the struggle, take a deep breath and, “Wax on, wax off.” spt

UNCIVIL DISCOURSE by Pastor Nathan Hoff Father Brown is my favorite British television show, followed closely by Sherlock, and Wallander. True confession time: I’m an Anglophile. Sometimes I dream of what it would be like to be a Vicar in Bath or York or even the Cotswolds, where the BBC’s Father Brown was filmed. I kind of relate to the detective priest, Father Brown, because I find that so much priest work is actually detective work. You have to search beneath the surface to detect the actual source of pain or guilt. You have to inspect deeper than the obvious pride, as it is usually just a puffy cover-up that masks buried insecurity. Suggesting counseling, or confession, or both, takes discernment that comes from asking diagnostic questions. We, and our souls, are complicated. The cure of souls is often like patient detective work. My most watched YouTube series is “Answers with the Prime Minister,” in which the Prime Minister of Great Britain spends around 45 minutes answering the questions of “the right honourable gentleman” or “the right honourable lady” of such-and-such constituency. Some of the questions are hostile from the other party, some are pure flattery from their own; there is plenty they share in common in the House of Commons, even across the aisle. They laugh at each other and with each other. They grieve recent losses together. They are well prepared for the debate. They scold each other when they feel the need and hold each other accountable for their promises and actions. They also speak English good, or is it well? Watching them has opened my eyes to see our own discourse with keener eyes. Have you noticed the toxic tone that marks our current national political discourse? The right was all bent out of shape because of all the time President Obama had to play golf. Now, I hear the left complaining about the same for President Trump. For the record, 44 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I JUNE 2018
I’m glad for the presidential bipartisan agreement on golf. Our toxic tone is like a cocktail that consists of shots of outrage, disgust, contempt, blame, insensitivity toward others, and acute sensitivity about ourselves. This toxic tone is not limited to the District of Columbia, but reaches into our soccer sidelines, neighborhood council meetings, and even into our family rooms. In fact, I am convinced that we don’t become who we elect; we elect who we already are. The toxic tone is not a trickle down, but reflective of a toxic tonic that all of us have drunk. John Gottman, the relationship author, talks about the four horseman of the apocalypse in a marriage, one of which is the conveyance of disgust. This can be done with snarky words, but is also effectively done with the rolling of the eyes or deeply disgusted sighs. As a good detective, Gottman looks below the surface. The conveyance of disgust does not come out of nowhere. Typically it comes from a deficit of good will, and what Gottman calls “flooding” or a recital of all the offenses, annoyances, and laundry list of the ills of our spouse. If our national politics, community, neighborhood councils, or families have a soul, it would do us well to put on our detective hat, pick up our magnifying glass and start asking where this toxic tone came from. Blame, disgust, and outrage feel good, because they help us live in the illusion that the problem is outside of ourselves. It is convenient to believe that our defilement comes from someone, somewhere else. Jesus said in Matthew 15 that it wasn’t what goes in that defiles us, “but what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.” Washington may have a swamp that needs draining, but that will not cleanse our discourse. My sister attended South Shores Elementary, Mary Star of the Sea High School, and Bryman College. As a paralegal, she worked in attorneys’ offices in town. As a teenager, Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Moody Blues, and Billy Joel came through big earphones. She loved to read. Gone with the Wind led her to love everything Southern. She attended each play assigned to Theater Club members. Gentle and kind, yet no pushover, she served up her determination with plates of freshly baked cookies and jars of homemade pickles. Forever in my heart, Lina, I miss you every day.

June 24, 1822 – Joseph Chapman (1784-1848), of English descent and originally from Maine, was the first American to arrive in California in 1818 when the State was still owned by Spain. In June 1822, Chapman was baptized in Ventura. He came as a hunted pirate who had been pressed into service by chief pirate Bouchard. His pirate ship was arrested in Monterrey, Mexico, but he had such building talent that he was not imprisoned but used locally to construct buildings and then ships. He flourished with his skills and eventually was granted the San Pedro Ranch. He built and launched in San Pedro the first ship to be built in California, named Guadalupe after his wife, Maria Guadalupe Ortega. He was an instrumental figure in developing San Pedro’s early infrastructure and first industries. The historian, Hugh Bancroft, says of him, “Among all the earliest pioneers of California, there was no more attractive character, no more popular and useful man, than Joseph Chapman, the Yankee.” 46 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I JUNE 2018
June 8, 1867 – Frank Lloyd Wright is born in Wisconsin. Considered the most influential architect of his time, he designed the Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. He and his son, Lloyd Wright, Jr., also built a number of houses in San Pedro. He first became known for his Prairie Style low-pitched roofs and extended lines, which blend into the landscape. He once wrote: “No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill, belonging to it, so hill and house could live together, each the happier for each other.” June 14, 1925 – San Pedro Peninsula Hospital is dedicated. The modest brick building was at 1305 West Sixth St. It had 19 beds, a major operating room, a minor operating room for emergencies, and a delivery room. The hospital has since come a long way, and with more than 130 professional physicians and 436 medical staff, its building on the same site is one of the 25 largest hospitals in Los Angeles area.
June 24, 1827 – Gov. John Bately Downey is born in Ireland. He moved to the U.S. in 1842, then on to California in 1849, where he opened the second drugstore in Los Angeles. He was elected to L.A. City Council, and in 1852, was appointed port collector in San Pedro. He purchased 2,400 acres of Rancho San Pedro, along with Phineas Banning and Benito Wilson, for the purpose of laying out the new city and harbor. In 1865, he became trustee of Phineas Banning’s Pioneer Oil Company, the first oil company in California. He was the actual founder of the Historical Society of Southern California, and in January 1860, he became the Governor of California. June 24, 1843 – Don Jose Diego Sepulveda married Maria Francisco Elizalde. Three of their children survived to share in the partition of the property that comprises much of present-day San Pedro. A quarter of the property went to the daughters of Esperanza Sepulveda de Bandini.
June 1868 – Honey bees are imported to San Pedro in 1854 by John Gordon. He decided on the well-groomed Italian queen bee. He paid $65 per queen bee and bought 300 of them, bringing 48 to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. During the 1862-64 drought, hundreds of honey bees died. The ones in Palos Verdes emigrated to the San Fernando Valley where they created the largest honey super hive of five tons of pure wild honey. June 27, 1542 – Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sets sail. He was from Portugal, a skilled mariner, and was in Mexico with Hernán Cortés, who had conquered Mexico for the Spaniards. Cortés returned to Spain leaving his viceroy Cabrillo with the plan to explore the coast up from Mexico northwards, called New Spain. On October 8 of the same year, Cabrillo came upon San Pedro Bay. spt
