co-housing project
introduction
A co-housing community is a housing community with shared services like collective kitchen, day-care center, and laundry to form a community that depends on each other for maintenance, administration, and amenities.
aim
To build an inclusive housing community with collaborative, collective spaces that encourage shared work responsibilities through common facilities at building and site levels among different age groups and genders.
objectives
1. To introduce more flexible spatial options than conventional housing by proposing shared living options.
2. To increase wholistic development of the site through shared spaces.
3. To help architects comprehend users’ needs of different ages and genders living in a shared community, rather than monotonous planning and design.
scope
The project’s scope is collaborative housing, oriented towards collaboration among residents. Housing has historically been associated with shared needs and a concentration of resources. Architects and urban planners are now researching options for shared living due to population expansion and increased urban density. With a unified vision for the future, these new models investigate a variety of spatial and formal combinations.
limitations
1. The project focuses primarily on co-housing dwellings for 165 users.
2. Inferences will be taken from case studies and are indicators of the general evolution of the project’s design process.
3. The project a whole, focuses only on middle-class housing in and around Manipal.

swastika in planning
The Swastika represents motion which is eternally revolving with an objective of establishing complete truth and consciousness. In the same way, the project also aims at attaining veracity through constant growth with the help of each other. Various shapes that shall help in site planning. Due to the site specific nature of the project, integrating the Swastika in the site planning process, the goal will be to knit all dwellings and services together. Four limbs of Swastika are four goals of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha (right action, worldly prosperity, worldly enjoyment, and spiritual liberation) and Shastha (manual or book). Incremental housing is a part of the idealogy of the Swastika. Incremental housing represents a notion eternally evolving by giving scope to developement. It also gives scope to increase in FAR and space for homeowners in the future.

site features
The width of Internal roads are: Vehicular roads: 6 m, Pedestrian pathways: 2 m, Pedestrian and occasional vehicular roads near Family Housing: 4.5 m. There are minimal site entries to ensure safety and reduce confusion on site. Drop off zone is provided at the entrance to create a barrier between public and private zones of the site. Service entry has been provided to access service areas like community kitchen and laundry. Due to less site safety due to roads on all edges, vegetation provided to help increase security on site. A park with open spaces has been included along the west edge of the site catering to the proposed land use map for 2021. The day care centre facilitates all working parents with children between the ages 6 through 14. A gardening area for the elderly has been provided to primarily facilitate the elderly by engaging them through the work of gardening that brings all of them together and helps tackle old age loneliness. In family housing there are horizontal layers of privacy (G+1) and in student housing, vertical layers of privacy (G+3).
public buildings
The public buildings are present close to the entrance zone of the site. They are placed and connected in such a way that they can easily be accessed by all the users. If the user is a vistor, they can enter through the drop off zone and then access the admin space that is present in the clubhouse block. The community kitchen and clubhouse have been designed keeping in mind various ages and genders in mind through a varied range of activities in the clubhouse & various types of seating in the dining area. The day care centre has provisins for play, study & resting areas and is connected to the park and the community pavilion

The planning of family housing is inspired by the Swastika. The 2BHK and 3BHK residences have been placed alternatively There is a common courtyard present centrally, in each family housing block where people can come and interact or take a fresh of breath air. The 3BHK units have an extra bedroom, bigger master bedroom and a bigger kitchen compared to the 2BHK units. For incremental housing, the 2BHK units can be converted to a 3BHK one by adding another room on the first floor. The community kitchen is the main space on site for dining but, family housing units are provided with a kitchen along with an attached dining area as it is essential for families to have quick bites at home.
Elderly housing is planned such that Internally, the users get privacy while at the same time, they have social spaces on the outside through the courtyard, the garden area and other hangout spaces. Each unit comprises of a bedroom, balcony, bathroom along with a closet.
The planning of student housing aims at vertical line of privacy for students and/ or bachelors. Each unit comprises of a bedroom, balcony, bathroom along with a closet. Outside unit is a wide corridor with lightwells that runs throughout the building and the natural lighting can be enjoyed by the users who choose to hangout there. The corridor consists of ledges as a seating area.

The necessity of this project is to introduce a collective housing community for Manipal’s developing urban centre that caters to the working class belonging to all genders. As more and more of the urban population come about each year to Manipal either for education or employment, they will look for flexible housing options. 34% of the employees of Udupi are women, and the rest, 66%, are men. A co-housing community can help working couples parent and share equal responsibilities through day-care facilities, collective kitchens and other services. A research was undertaken on 627 senior people aged 60 and up in the rural region of Udupi taluk. The goals were to determine the prevalence of depression and investigate the predictors of depression in the elderly. According to this survey, 21.7% of the older population suffers from depression. Because seniors are prone to social isolation, inclusive design, such as co-housing, may provide standard living settings that stimulate social interactions and relationships for inhabitants, allowing them to age with dignity. The suburb of Manipal can create a model for a co-housing community for further experimentation.

nav bharat udyan
introduction
Spread over 25 acres, the Nav Bharat Udyan will be open to the public and is being designed to have infotainment facilities viz. Sphere of Unity, Milestones Walkway, Journey of India, Tech Dome and OpenAir Theatre, to showcase India’s rich historical and cultural heritage, scientific achievements and symbolize Unity in Diversity and aspirations of rising New India.
Central Vista Development /Redevelopment Master Plan envisions
To redevelop Central Vista as a world class public space, restore its grandeur as an architectural icon, house modern facilities for efficient functioning of administration, strengthen cultural institutions and commemorate 75 years of India’s independence.
The Iconic Structure in Nav Bharat Udyan:
The iconic structure is planned in Nav Bharat Udyan to realize the grand vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, symbolizing emerging New India with equitable growth opportunities, rooted in values of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas, Sabka Vishwaas and representing the aspiration of clean India, free from poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism and casteism.
population study
Zone D was mostly designed by Ar. Edwin Lutyens in the 1900s with govt. offices, bungalows and gardens. There are spacious residences that are spread out, yet with lesser people in them. The site is falling in Zone D would be a greater advantage as it doesn’t have village boundaries, LDRA and land pooling. This condition would be ideal for iconic structure. Currently, zone D is known for tourist and heritage places. Due to which there is influx of tourist people.
Even though the decadal growth has decreased in Zone D, there is an increase in population. Increase in population can lead to increase in traffic on NH 44 which is on the west of the site. This can affect imageability of the site and well as the iconic structure that has been proposed. The increase in population won’t affect the immediate context. The closest buildings on the east of the site that will have an impact on the skyline in 1.56 kms away. (Commonwealth Village) The buildings on the west of the site that will have an impact on the skyline are India Gate, Rashtrapathi Bhavan, etc in the Central Vista.

On the east of the Yamuna river, the Restricted Forest also known as the Delhi Ridge is present which is a ridge in the Northern Aravalli leopard wildlife corridor and doesn’t allow for any man-made developments. On the west of the Yamuna river, residential properties can’t come up due to the presence of flood plains in the region. If any other buildings were to come up, they would have to be built with embankments and with respect to the DDA Regulations. Delhi has been expanding in all directions without any overall plan; the congestion continued, and the city grew haphazardly. However, in the immediate site context the built % has grown towards the Yamuna river over the years. As we can observe in the pictures, rural areas of Delhi are present border of the capital while urban areas are present at the centre. Therefore, majority of the target audience for our proposal would be from urban areas in Delhi. Hence, the proposal will need to blend in with the context.

adamya - mixed housing project introduction
A mixed housing project with HIG, MIG, EWS dwelling units and commercial complex in the coastland of Malpe, Udupi amidst a bustling commercial surrounding. The project welcomes local residents and migrant workers to a network of comfortable and affordable residential modules.

concept - assemblage
An approach that looks at the whole as an inseparable combination of interrelated parts. This implies that the parts are involved in each other. On site, we can observe that each housing unit is dependent on the services/utilities offered by each other. So, they are always involved. The services/utilities like commercial & clubhouse complexes, playgrounds and parks that area offered on site can work independently in different set ups, but here, they act as assemblages.
A part of an assemblage may be detached from it & plugged into a different assemblage in which its interactions are different. An aspect of the theory is the fact that it does not privilege one group over another. “Micro” is not more fundamental than “macro”; instead, social reality is “multiscale”, with assemblages occurring at every level. On site, the EWS, MIG & HIG units are united through these assemblages that are serviceable by all, equally.

The elevation of ews housing is inspired by the De Stijl movement: Principles of straight lines, rectangles, asymmetricity, use of primary colours with black & white, the relationship between positive & negative elements in an arrangement of forms and lines.

concept - hegemony + heterotopia
A customer enters the experiencing the site to be strong and powerful. On entering the building she/he experiences a sense of unity. this depicts transformation of the world as a society from being a tyranny to an accepting one. hegemony is the term used to describe kinds of domination. When the user enters the site, she/he notices elements that stand out first. emphasis and domination is introduced by using louvres and other geometrical elements in the front elecation of the building. heterotopia introduces “intermediate spaces”. It believes in the real societies, societies with diverse elements which sit together in equilibrium. New hotels focus on communal spaces and areas where travelers and locals can gather over larger spaces.
The aim of the project is to design a Three Star Hotel & a Convention Centre using steel as a construction material keeping in mind the local topography, climate and surrounding environments.
