Take me to the

River San Marcos’ spring-fed gem just one of many area attractions It is in every sense of the word the soul of San Marcos. Dubbed “River of the Innocents” when Spanish explorers came across it, some even credit the crystal-clear stream that originates within the city as being able to cleanse the soul of wrongdoing. OK, maybe that’s a little much, but immersion in the constant 72-degree water that gushes pure from the Edwards Aquifer can certainly take the heat out of the most scorching summer day. True Vineyard ministry makes a difference one villager at a time

Located a few blocks from the courthouse on W. San Antonio Street, the Vineyard Marketplace had unique tree decorations this summer with hanging plastic jugs to collect small change. “The project was called ‘Gallons of Change’ with a purpose to raise money to help build a water well in Rwanda, a well that will furnish clean water to 900 residents,” said Diana

Wiley, True Vineyard founder. Work on the well has already began and thanks to the contributions from San Marcos residents, visitors and several Vacation Bible School groups across the city, donations were remarkable. The Vineyard Marketplace is like no other store in the area with

With price ranges of as little as $4, the store carries wallets for men, all kinds of jewelry, hand-carved back scratchers, quilts of all sizes and even carved soap stone. “One of our biggest sellers are the hand-made greeting cards, many with beautiful and colorful stitching on them,” said Wiley, who spends several months per year in Rwanda. And therein begins the story of how The Vineyard Marketplace came into existence. “Back in ’02 I heard about the need for medical supplies in Mozambique and two years later went with my church on a mission trip there,” Wiley said. Soon she felt the calling to do more and thus began True Vineyard Ministries, Inc. which today is interdenominational working with many churches. “Rwanda was the site of massive genocide in the early 90s and it left over 600,000 widows. Many of them were infected with HIV,” Wiley said. “While the government there gives them free medicine, it is critical that they have healthy food in order to take it. What we did was to go the village leaders and get ten widows that they nominated as being the poorest and homeless with children.” “After raising money to build each of them a house, we turned our attention to helping them become self-sustaining by teaching skills like making bread to sell to local villagers, spinning wool and making rugs which could be dyed using native plants. We wanted to teach them marketable skills that no one else was doing in Rwanda,” Wiley said.

Ava Pope grew up in San Marcos, paddling the river and hiking the trails and finding all the best camping spots in Hays County. She also spent time at Texas State; her calculus class at San Marcos High School met on the university's campus, and it's difficult to ignore a student population of more than 32,000 in a town of 50,000. But when she graduated from high school, Texas

She picked the university because it offered her the most scholarships. “Once I started going here, and especially now, I realize I have no regrets,” Pope, who graduated in May with a degree in physics and now is working on a doctorate, said. “Texas State was just amazing.” Heather Galloway, a professor in the department of physics, recruited Pope for University Honors, a unique program that allows high-achieving students to take specially-designed courses as part of their degree plans. That led Pope to work with another physics professor, Donald Olson, whose research and honors classes examine the relationships between art, literature and astronomy and whose work has earned worldwide mention. After having her in class, Olson recruited Pope to work with him, and she wound up traveling to New York as well as several destinations in Europe to examine the relationship between celestial events and art and poetry. The bond she developed with Olson — a bond between an eminent scholar and an undergraduate — would be uncommon in most academic circles. But bonds such as those do happen at Texas State, which was founded Pope is now working on a as a teacher-training instidoctorate at Texas State. tution and still maintains and nurtures small-schoolstyle relationships — even as it has grown to be the fifthlargest university in the state with more than 32,000 students. That size allows Texas State to offer 97 bachelor's degrees in fields as diverse as athletic training and accounting, international studies and interior design, public relations and physics, as well as 89 master's degrees and nine doctorates. The university is recognized nationally for many of its programs. It has the largest geography department in the United States, and the creative writing program attracts some of the country's best writers as guest lecturers. Texas State is becoming a center of aquatic biology research, thanks to the presence of the spring-fed San Marcos River. It also offers students a range of options beyond the classroom — more than 300 student organizations as well as community outreach efforts like Bobcat Build, in which members of the Texas State community work on clean-up and small construction projects for the people of San Marcos. The university even has work opportunities that cater to students' interests. “The whole time I was at Texas State, I worked for Outdoor Recreation,” Pope says. “I love being outside, camping and backpacking and paddling.” For more about Ava Pope, see www.txstate.edu/risingstars. • Education (Continued from page 18) teaching the necessary skills needed to be successful but by also empowering them to achieve personal goals and ambitions. The commitment to a lifetime of learning has a positive influence on this society by transforming students into graduates and strengthening the labor force. San Marcos creates educational opportunities for students of all ages making the possibilities endless for the children in the community.

Public Schools The focus of San Marcos CISD is to provide a quality education to students, empowering them to pursue productive and fulfilling lives. Covering 210 square miles, SMCISD includes six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school serving approximately 7,500 students. SMCISD evaluates the effectiveness of its curriculum partly by assessing students on their academic performances in state assessment testing. Results from the 2010 preliminary TAKS scores show SMCISD continues to rise in performance, particularly in math and science where it met the new Recognized standard of 80 percent. Areas of strength for the district have been primarily in reading, writing and social studies hitting the mark for Exemplary (90 percent meeting standard in all groups). SMCISD officials believe the increase in TAKS scores can be partly attributed to the creation of six elementary campuses from four elementary campuses and one intermediate campus. Within the past five years, SMCISD has been recognized for several accomplishments and performance making it a desirable public school system. The school district achieved a Recognized rating in the Texas Education Agency school accountability system in July of 2010.

With an extraordinary staff of certified teachers, Wonderland School provides an atmosphere that promotes the highest intellectual, social, moral and physical development of each student. Little Guys takes all the stress out of moving Whether you're moving an apartment, house or office, the task is never fun and many times turns out to be harder than you originally thought. That is, unless you contact Little Guys Movers, which has been taking the stress, emotion and hassles out of moving for clients here since 1997. “I think one of the first things people notice about us that's different is that our guys really like working with each other and helping ease the burden of moving for customers,” Mike Lang, local manager, said. “Many of our employees start with us when they are freshman in college and stay even through getting a master's degree,” Lang said. While the company started out handling mostly San Marcos-area work, it has now expanded to reach from Austin to San Antonio and even across state lines. “Beyond our interstate certification which came in February, we've also achieved certification from the AMSA, American Moving and Storage Association. That's important because the AMSA is like the Better Business Bureau but geared specifically towards the moving and storage industry. “It tells consumers that we can be trusted and have a great service record,” said Lang. Normally the AMSA certification process takes just over a year but Little Guys Movers was able to pass all the hurdles several months earlier, due in part to its reputation among past customers. “When you move people's valuable possessions, they want someone they can trust, and we've proven to be

During the height of summer moving season, Lang says the company has scheduled anywhere from 28-40 moves per week. In winter the average is closer to 15 per week. From one piece moves like a baby grand piano to relocating entire business offices, Little Guys Movers has seen it all and counts itself fortunate that many customers come back for their next move too.

Live and

Local San Marcos music scene has its share of big names

A local singer performs at Cheatham Street Warehouse. 30

It’s hard to go on too long about live music in San Marcos without at least mentioning the name George Strait. “The King of Country” — the one with 30 consecutive years of top 10 Billboard hits — got his start at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos in the mid 70s. Terri Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randy Rogers and John Arthur Martinez played the Cheatham Street stage early in their careers, too. Just down the road, Gruene Hall offers Texas music mainstays at least five nights a week. But there’s more than country available in and around San Marcos. The revamped Bar 141 — formally Lucy’s San Marcos — offers a swankier approach complete with bottle service, as well as local hip hop music. More in the realm of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Triple Crown Live has offered live music — local regulars like Robbie Doyen and local icons like Scott Biram — for 5,000 days straight. That includes Christmas. Here’s a closer look at the local music scene.

• CTMC mind of the residents of, and visitors to, Hays County. While the hospital has not always been known as CTMC, it has always been focused on compassionate care. The origin of today’s CTMC was the 1923 opening of the Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital on Belvin Street in downtown San Marcos. In March of 1960, the facility relocated to IH-35 as Hays Memorial Hospital to better serve the growing area. After 23 years and a $1 million capital campaign, the hospital again moved, this time to its present location on Wonder World Drive. In 1987 the organization changed its name a final time to Central Texas Medical Center and became a part of the Adventist Health System. To best meet the needs of its growing service area, CTMC has expanded both its services and facilities throughout the years. Millions of dollars have been invested in several renovations, additions, new service lines and information technology advances since the hospital’s opening in 1983.

The origins of CTMC date back to 1923 on Belvin Street downtown. Since 1983, the hospital has undergone numerous major construction projects including adding a three-story professional office building, a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit and cardiac catheteri-

zation lab and a new, two-story main entrance addition featuring a new intensive care unit, patient registra-

In 2007 and 2008, the hospital underwent several more large-scale renovations including enhanced ER and ICU waiting rooms, a new 6,000 square foot Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Institute, renovation to the main lobby and waiting areas — including the addition of Mochas & Javas Internet café — an Outpatient Sleep Improvement Center, an expanded and renovated MRI, and a complete facelift and conversion to all private rooms on the third floor medical/surgical unit. In late 2009, CTMC completed the largest phase of its $35 million expansion project, including a new Women’s Center. The center features all-private rooms, a high-risk delivery suite and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU. The facility’s growth further produced a specialized Childbirth Educator/Lactation Consultant and expansion of childbirth education and parenting offerings. The project also brought a major renovation and expansion to the hospital’s operating suites, which added two additional OR’s outfitted with the latest in integrated OR technology along with the renovation and expansion of the hospital’s original four OR’s. In January of 2010, the hospital opened its comprehensive Institute for Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine as well as the Institute for Healthy Living, which is dedicated to empowering people to make informed and better choices about their personal wellness. In March, the new Healing Garden officially opened. As the first decade of the 21st Century drew to a close, CTMC had become a 178-bed acute-care hospital providing a wide range of complex healthcare services in San Marcos and neighboring communities. The CTMC staff of more than 700 employees works with more than 200 active and consulting physicians to provide quality services to patients and their families. In addition, more than 100 community members and interns from area educational institutions volunteer their services to the hospital. As part of Adventist Health System, CTMC brings a long tradition of Christian healthcare to San Marcos. Adventists opened their first health center in 1866 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Now with 37 hospitals located across the United States, the Adventist Health System is the largest not-for-profit Protestant hospital system in the country. CTMC’s passion for extending the healing ministry of Christ can be traced to the first day the doors opened on Wonder World Drive in 1983 when the parents of the first baby born in the hospital had no means to pay their bill.

“The story of Central Texas Medical Center’s past reveals its commitment to growing with the community, and the story of its future will be no different. CTMC has always been and will always be staffed by highly qualified, compassionate health care providers.”

36

In recognition of the milestone birth, the hospital waived all charges for the struggling new family. Today, more than a quarter of a century later, the giving spirit continues wherever and whenever there is an opportunity to extend Christ’s ministry of compassion and service to our fellow man. From annual free health care mission trips to thirdworld countries overseas, to scholarships for local students in need, CTMC puts its mission into practice by giving back to both the community and those around the world. Each year the hospital underwrites millions of dollars of care for the underprivileged and donates time, funds, supplies and services to numerous worthy causes that align with the hospital’s mission. Beyond caring for the healthcare needs of our community, many CTMC employees, physicians and volunteers support a variety of community causes, social service organizations, churches and other non-profit organizations through significant donations of their personal time and money. The benefits they provide to the community cannot be measured, but are quite substantial. The story of Central Texas Medical Center’s past reveals its commitment to growing with the community, and the story of its future will be no different. CTMC has always been and will always be staffed by highly qualified, compassionate health care providers. CTMC is more than a hospital; it’s a health ministry featuring a team of professionals passionate about extending the healing ministry of Christ.

Little Shoppe of Health remains small by choice With a name that fits its size and location, Little Shoppe of Health remains small by choice, neatly tucked away in a quaint shopping center just across from Kinkos/FedEx on North Edward Gary street. “We've chosen to stay small because we want to concentrate on that unique customer experience, where people come into a relaxed atmosphere and receive expertise from our staff,” owner Kathy Dunham said. The store opened in 1999, but Dunham's experience goes back more than 30 years in the health store business. “Growing up in Victoria, I landed a part-time job while in high school with a neighborhood health food store. Because I'd been sick much of the time as a child I found the information insightful into causes of the sickness and how to better take care of myself and others nutritionally,” Dunham said. Dunham received her undergraduate degree at Texas State while managing another health food store here in San Marcos, a position she held for the next 20 years. “After I retired, customers kept calling me for guidance and suggestions on health food supplements,” Dunham said. “And after a year I decided it was time to get back into the business full-time but by opening my own store. That's how Little Shoppe of Health was born in 1999.” Business has remained steady for the store ever since. “We carry a full range of supplements, vitamins and minerals as well as other natural care products,” Dunham said. “And now we also offer more organic skin care and mineral makeup which has become a growing segment of the market,” Dunham said. Remaining small has also afforded Dunham the ability to not only give free literature and consultations to potential customers but also free samples to make sure an ingredient works for them before spending lots of money.

“We strive to help transform the lives of children through one-toone mentoring because we know that investing in a child is an investment in our community's future,” Melanie Chasteen, VicePresident of Marketing and Communications for Big Brothers/Big Natalia de la Garza with Sisters, said. In the past three years "Little" Autumn. Big Brothers/Big Sisters has provided 116 area youth with volunteer mentors and is currently serving 52 children in Hays County. “We are committed to San Marcos and Hays County. It is one of our priority areas,” Chasteen said. “Our program grew 17 percent last year. One of the proudest

See BIG page 39

• Big (Continued from page 38 ) achievements is that we were able to offer $2,000 college scholarships to 12 of our Littles in 2009.” Chasteen said that the college scholarships are awarded to children who have been matched to a Big for over one year and who either graduate high school or complete their GED. In addition, 15 educational institutions offer a financial match to the Littles who attend their school. Statistically, the BB/BS program is a success. According to the organization, of the youth mentored in Hays County, 100 percent avoided early parenting; 95 percent improved their academic performance; 89 percent had better classroom participation; 80 percent avoided delinquent behavior; and 79 percent improved their relationships with adults, family and peers. Big Brothers and Big Sisters is careful in matching youth with adults. “We screen and match volunteers with our youth, and then provide ongoing supervision, support and training to ensure the match is safe and satisfying for both the volunteer and the child,” Chasteen said. The cost of supporting a match runs about $1,250 per year which includes recruiting, enrolling and matching the volunteers and children plus ongoing support for them. Various fundraisers like Bowl for Kids' Sake as well as in-kind service donations help meet the annual goals and costs. “We also work closely with the San Marcos Chamber and San Marcos CISD as well as creating relationships with area corporate, civic and faith-based organizations,” Chasteen said. Another aspect of the local BB/BS organization is “Bobcat Bigs,” as student group at Texas State University. “The group serves several purposes: It provides mentors, support fundraising efforts, provide awareness and advocate on our behalf. It also holds match events for the Bigs and Littles in Hays County which affords matches simple, fun activities to participate in together,” Chasteen said. Currently, the biggest need for BB/BS is more male and bilingual volunteers, Chasteen said.

Local market overcomes building fire to provide same great service in Uhland On Nov. 30, 2002, Bon Ton Meat Market lit up the night sky in Kyle as a raging fire consumed the long-time downtown establishment. Determined to rebuild, owner Craig Fuller found a new location bordering San Marcos and Kyle in Uhland on Highway 21. “At first, after the fire, I'd thought about just opening a small place with the idea of just processing deer meat a few months out of the year,” Fuller said. “But the city of Uhland wanted more for the community and that's why we have expanded to becoming the Bon Ton Meat Market and Country Store,” Fuller said. Fuller's family bought the store from the prior owners back in the 60s, and he came into the family business full time in 1985, later buying the store from his father. “It is still very much like family here. We have a small number of employees but some, like one of our meat cutters, have been here since almost the beginning,” Fuller said. His original goal of meat processing for local hunters is still very much intact as wild game processing makes up an estimated 30 percent to 40 percent of their business, including the processing of over 1,000 white tail deer each year.

• Market (Continued from page 42) “We specialize in custom meat and wild game processing,” Fuller said. “And we carry many specialty items like chorizo as well as doing party trays for football games and other events.” During the holiday season Fuller says the store sells lots of prime ribs and custom roasts that bring customers from hundreds of miles away just to order from them year after year. “Prime ribs are definitely a specialty of ours,” Fuller said. Another major item is the marketing of “freezer specials” each month. “It's a size that fits in small freezers but allows the customer to purchase with considerable savings enough meat to last about a month for a medium-size family,” Fuller said. With the rising popularity of the country store, Fuller has also taken on selling lines from other local businesses in the area. “Texas Pie Company in Kyle is very well known and we now carry their pies here, which has become extremely popular. And we just started carrying products from New World Bakery, also in Kyle. Customers really appreciate the selection and opportunity these items bring while they are here shopping for their meat and other needs,” Fuller said. True to its name, the Bon Ton Meat Market and Country Store makes for a nice relaxing drive in the country with the reward of great food upon your arrival.

Cruisin’

Dick Burdick inside his car museum.

Dick’s Classic Garage features 60 antique cars Dick Burdick is in the middle of a story about the ugliest car he ever owned. So ugly, he says, its mother wouldn’t even claim the thing. The clunker was a late 40s model blue/green Kaiser. He’d bought it, strictly out of necessity, after a few months in school at the University of Missouri — his love life was great, his grades were sliding, and he figured there was one slicklooking 1948 black Buick Roadmaster convertible to blame. Burdick stops what he’s saying and raises his arm, careful not to bump the fender of the car in front of him, and points to the opposite end of the showroom — to a black 1948 Roadmaster. “It was just like that one over there,” Burdick says. “So anyway, I sold the Buick and bought a Kaiser. Man, it was ugly. But I figured I was paying to get an education, so I’d better get one.” Sixty or so of the antique car collector’s vehicles are on display at Burdick’s Dick’s Classic Garage in San Marcos. Burdick’s showroom offers not only an industry history lesson but a time-portal to the special moments that certain cars can bring back to life. Every car has a story. Burdick’s personal story of car ownership starts with a classic Model-T. In 1979, Burdick, the Thermon Manufacturing Company founder, was visiting a heater cable distributor in Houston. He told the man that he needed a bigger inventory, but the distributor shook his head and said he couldn’t: He had a Model-T in his warehouse that was taking up too much room. Burdick wanted a closer look. “So we went into the warehouse, got that Model-T out of

It was around 30 years prior when Burdick and his high

• PALS (Continued from page 44) risks are reduced when pets are neutered and vaccinated. Fixed pets roam less and are less aggressive. Vaccinated pets have fewer diseases. PALS provides spay/neuter vouchers and Spay Days throughout the year to those who would not otherwise be able to sterilize their pets without help. The spay/neuter program will continue until the shelters are empty and every pet has a forever home. The PALS' Pet Pantry helps those who are barely getting by, with the hope that these families will keep their pets instead of surrendering them to already overburdened shelters. PALS offers age-appropriate lessons and presentations to promote responsible pet ownership. The classes teach how to care for and respect the animals in local homes and communities, bite prevention, safety with pets, pet overpopulation and the importance of spay/neuter. Trap-Neuter-Return-Maintain (TNRM) spares the lives of free-roaming or homeless cats, whether they are feral, stray or abandoned. TNRM is the only method that effectively and humanely reduces the community cat population. Each fall PALS hosts Pet Fest, its largest benefit to help fund PALS. This event features live music, a 5K and fun run/dog jog, Weenie and Chihuahua races, vendors, food booths, silent auction, dog washes and of course, the famous costume contests! • Cars (Continued from page 47) school buddy began collecting Model-T parts from local garages and scrap yards. Eventually, they put the bits together and built an entire Model-T. They drove it back and forth to school for a year. That was how Burdick became a first-time car owner. Burdick was born in Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1929. Though he arrived just in time for the Depression, he was fortunate. His dad had constant work for Union Pacific as a dispatcher, so there was always plenty of food to go around. But he remained aware of the bleak surroundings. “I got a good overview of what was happening, with soup kitchens and people that didn’t have enough to eat. On Saturday, my dad would go buy a trunkload of groceries and take them to people who had worked for the railroad and were out of work and broke,” Burdick said. “My father was benevolent; He taught me a lot — what goes around comes around, and the more you give the more you get. And I still believe it is that way.”

A 1955 Oldsmoble In 1951, Burdick graduated and heard about a job opening in Houston with Dupont. His first project as a Dupont employee involved handling liquid sulfur — a chemical compound that melts at 290 degrees. Burdick knew a little bit about the stuff from piddling with his chemistry lab back home — but had no idea at the time what it would mean for him. He and a friend, through several trial-and-error experiments, figured a way to heat the liquid sulfur, melt it and transfer it safely and efficiently. “We tried to get Dupont to patent it. They said it was a mechanical thing, and they were into chemical things,” Burdick said. So, in 1954, the two mustered $40 — Burdick borrowed his half from a local grocer — and started their own business. That first year, sales were somewhere around $1,300. Last year, the same figure for Thermon — now a multinational corporation — was $290 million. Those early years, Burdick said he spent a lot of the time on the road building sales: And that was just the way he liked it. “I had a 1955 Oldmosbile, and I put 100,000 miles on that car, going back and forth across the country setting up sales,” Burdick said.

A 1950 Mark 5 Jaguar Thermon thrived and, starting in 1979 with his distributor’s Model-T, Burdick began collecting cars. He guesses he owns around 250 if you count all the cars in his first museum and all the cars he has in storage — everything from a Lamborghini to a 1929 Duesenberg made for the president of Coca-Cola. But the featured cars here in San Marcos were made between the years of 1929 and 1959, years that Burdick no doubt remembers well. He can only hope that those who visit the museum get that same feeling, that a certain memory comes back. “What most people end up with is ‘this car was just like the one my daddy had, or this car was just like my granddaddy’s,” Burdick said. And then he pauses and looks out over his showroom, remembering another car, and another story. This one’s about his daughter. “It’s sort of like that 1950 Mark 5 Jaguar that I have,” Burdick said. “I had one of those when my youngest daughter Nikki was born. She was born here in San Marcos, but we lived at the ranch in Rosanke. Anyway, I went to go pick her, my wife and my mother-in-law up in that Jaguar to head back to Rosanke. Well then the brakes went out on us. I had to baby it all the way home with the emergency brake on.” Every car has a story behind it. For Burdick, it’s just a matter of tracking ‘em down.

Complex Care. Simple Choice. Hays County is growing and so is the Seton Family of Hospitals. Seton Medical Center Hays in Kyle is the largest hospital in the county, offering a comprehensive range of emergency, medical, surgical, diagnostic and maternity services on our medical campus. In addition to these services, we’ve started an open-heart program, state-of-the-art cardiac services and stroke center for the rapidly growing community. The choice for the kind of medical care you need is simple – because it’s all in one place.

Seton Medical Center Hays is a proud member of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.
