For those who remember our event at Viaggio a few years back, we attracted over one thousand people who all had a fantastic time. This year, we’re going bigger and better.

I know our winters are mild, and it does bring joy knowing that I’ll never have to dig my car out of four feet of snow—but after awhile the gray skies start to get to me. This last weekend my family and I relaxed on the grass in our backyard just soaking up the rays. Chilling and relaxing is a rare state for me. After all, I am a project guy that likes to go, go, go. I find great pleasure in all my projects from work to family to yardwork. You learn something new, you hone your talents and you spend time with your kids—sometimes against their will—to help install the new gates in the backyard, build something in the garage… and the list goes on.

I always look forward to our annual How To Guide for this very reason. As it grows, so does my list of things to accomplish. I like to know how things work. While working on this year’s guide my staff and I were able to learn many tools, from dental health and air conditioning to banking and bathroom remodels. I think that will be next weekend’s project…

“Tahitian legends share stories that teach positivity and hit close to home,” says Stockton native Melanie Marie Amen, in regards to her life-long involvement in Tahitian culture. “My siblings and I were born into it.”

Melanie’s mother, Yolanda, fell in love with all things Tahitian in high school. Today, she has inspired not only her five children, but the community of Stockton through their family operated Tamari’i Mata’irea Polynesian Dance Group. The group is open to all ages and skill sets, and works to bring a positive outlet to Stockton youth.

As Melanie explains, it’s common for teenagers to have mixed priorities, but “when they come to dance they see happiness doesn’t come from materialist things—you can do things that make you happy.” And at just 19 years old, this Delta College student walks her talk…. Or should I say dance?

Melanie first visited Tahiti at 10 years old. “It changed me,” she says as she reminisces about the community’s generosity, kindness, and acceptance. “They had nearly nothing, yet they wanted to give us everything.” Four visits later in November 2015, Melanie found herself back in Tahiti to compete in the three-day Ori Tahiti Nui World Championship Dance Competition after being awarded a ticket for winning first place overall in the female division of San Jose Tahiti Fete.

“It’s more than just dancing, you are telling a story,” Melanie explains. The story she told in Tahiti was that of Hotu Hiva—a young woman who had escaped an arranged marriage by hiding in a drum and traveling the ocean. When she arrived to an island, she was rejected by the people and forced to dance for their God. Her dance was so beautiful that their God took human form and married the young woman.

With support from Lorenzo of Grands Ballets Tahiti Gbt and choreography coaching from Tiare Trompette, the director of her favorite group Hei Tahiti, Melanie honed the spirit of Hotu Hiva and prepared for competition.

ico, Japan, France, and the U.S. As this was the very first World Championship of it’s kind, Melanie couldn’t feel more humbled. “I couldn’t believe that they called my name,” she says. “I am just so grateful for the experience… not even for the title—just to be able to dance with all those girls, to do what we love.”

“My mom and dad have always taught me to be thankful for what God has given me,” she says. And together the Amen family spread their gratuity not only throughout San Joaquin with their dance group, but throughout the world, with their non-profit organization Mata’irea Polynesian Culture Preservation which gives back to the Tahitian people through educational supplies, sports, and other endeavors.

Though the Amen fam-

ily comes from an African American and Filipino background, they strive to spread, share, and preserve the Tahitian culture, which they so dearly cherish. And to that, Melanie says, “I am just so attached. My whole world revolves around it.”

Colonel Claude is my ultimate nemesis! Stockton and Bakersfield have been rivals for many years and now that the teams are owned by Calgary and Edmonton, who have a deep-rooted rivalry in the NHL, the animosity is much worse!

Green hued beverages are all the rage on St. Patrick’s Day. From apple tinis to Midori sours, you can count on colorful cocktails to keep you seeing green March 17.

Stop in to your local watering hole and flash your I.D. for one of these bright concoctions.

At Finnegan’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, the green beer (Coors Light with food coloring) will be flowing as patrons pile in to get plowed off kegs of the dyed beverage, but beer isn’t the only option for those who want to sip in style. Tokyo tea (on the menu year round) is an alternative to the more popular Long Island ice tea. It packs the same punch with just a few small tweaks to the recipe. Vodka, gin, rum, and triple sec create the base, but lemon, lime, and melon liqueur give this drink its green glow. Make Taxes a BREEZE 

It’s that time of year again. Tax Day (April 15) is fast approaching!

Whether you’re looking to maximize your refund, or minimize what you owe, San Joaquin tax professionals have helpful advice for you! Digest these quick tips before you file to ensure you’re being smart about your taxes.

Be prepared. Before you sit down to start the process, compile all of the documents you may need, including those that apply to your income and deductions. This will keep you from getting up to collect items as new questions arise. Not only will you need the W-2s you receive from your job, but also any forms about unemployment income, alimony, rental properties, and more. Don’t start until you’ve received all of your tax documents in the mail.

Entering incorrect numbers as guesstimates could cost you later.

“Make and use a checklist to ensure that you are not missing any information needed to complete your return,” suggests Dale Immekus, financial advisor at Dedicated Financial & Insurance Services in Lodi. “Basically anything with a dollar sign may come in to play.” It also helps to have the previous year’s tax return for both you and your spouse handy, as much of the information will be repetitive. Not only is it a time saver, it could also help limit errors.

Take your time. “Don’t rush to complete the tax return,” warns Richard L. Manies, an enrolled agent (a federally licensed tax practitioner with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS).

Errors can result in paying more in taxes than you should, receiving a letter from the IRS, or both.

Know when to ask for help. “I suggest that you consult a tax professional when you have had ‘big’ changes or ‘events’ in your life, such as getting married, having a child, purchasing a home, [earning an income] over $100,000, starting a business or purchasing a rental property, receiving an inheritance, or a death in the immediate family,” Richard says.

“If someone has received a letter from the IRS or the State of California indicating they have been assessed late penalties or owe past due taxes, then it is definitely time to call in a tax professional,” Dale adds.

Set yourself up for success. If cash flow allows, take steps throughout the year to reduce what you owe come April.

“Consider increasing or maximizing your contributions to any tax deferred opportunities such as group retirement plans through work, or traditional IRA accounts,” Dale advises. These types of payments pay off at the end of the year with additional write-offs.

Know your software. If you want to complete your return without the assistance of a professional, pick software you can count on. Richard suggests TurboTax. “Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, also has developed a full line of tax software for tax professionals, is the developer of QuickBooks, and I have found that the company is fully engaged in all aspects of individual and business tax preparation,” he says. In addition, TurboTax (like many other providers) offers online tax support.

SUGAR A Manteca mother shares her love for digital art 

“I decided if Frida can do it, I could give it a try,” Emily Whitaker says when asked what sparked her passion for art nearly seven years ago, referring of course to the movie that tells the true story of acclaimed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her larger-than-life husband Diego Rivera.

Today, Emily has traded her paintbrush for a mouse pad as she enjoys her newest artistic venture, digital art. Under the name Tormented Sugar, she shares her current style, “digital pop art,” via Instagram, throughout areas of San Joaquin, and in print publications. “I decided to go with a pseudo-name to stand out in the overwhelming sea of artists online. I wanted to focus on building an online presence to get my art out into the world one painting at a time,” she explains.

Emily also shares her work through involvement with 38

non-profits like Eye Will Inc., out of Modesto.

This particular group provides for visually impaired children and hits close to home, as Emily was born premature with 20/200 vision.

“It’s not far from legal blindness,” the artist explains. “I rely mostly on my right eye to see the detail in my paintings.”

In 2014 Emily was gifted a laptop and then a tablet- giving her access to art apps like Sketchbook, Bamboo Paper, Infinite Paper, Sketch, and Art flow.

With these tools, her love for digital art grew as she created Andy Warhol-esque works representing celebrities, shoes, and beauty products. “My Nicolas Cage portrait ended up on the front page of Huffington Post’s Art section, right next to my favorite Japanese artist Sebastian Masuda!”

Despite a long history as a working artist, it look Emily a while to accept her new position. I’ve let my previously dyed red hair fade; can I put blonde highlights over it?

A. “There are a few things you can do- if your hair was a solid color before and had a solid red- you can do a strawberry blonde with highlights if you have naturally dirty blonde hair. A gentle bleach wash will brighten and lighten the hair to give it some tone. The goal is to always keep your hair in good condition while taking [it] from style to style. Why is it important to consult a professional when looking for a light grey or pastel color?

A. “To get those colors you have to go all the way with bleach to a pale, pale white. If you have dark hair there is no way you’re getting that color, or else you’ll have some serious damage. There is also a risk of the color going green, so if you have blue toned silver, and are not light enough it will mix with the yellow and turn to green.

Does wearing your hair up cause a lot of breakage?

A. “Tricky question, some hair that’s extremely fine shouldn’t have stress on it at all, but for most we recommend covered bands and bobby pins with covered tips to prevent any breakage.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist A. “If you wear it up in the same spot with a clip it can definitely cause breakage and even more so if your hair is heavy.” – Anne Oliver, Owner, The Head Quarters Salon

A. The biggest thing is time- do you have it? Fashion colors don’t last very long and they really fade quickly. I’m a mom of two young boys and even I have a hard time finding time for my hair. Talk to your stylist about what you really have time for and what you can do- would you use products? What is the best type of brush to use?

What can be done to avoid brassy tones that come in after I get my hair colored?

A. “Glazes or glosses help control brassy tones. It is also important to use a shampoo and conditioner to preserve your color. As well, you can get a toning shampoo and conditioner and alternate it with your color care shampoo. Another trick is to use violet toned shampoos.

You can also add in low lights, and cool tones. We also recommend an Aveda product, Blue Malva, which is designed to take the brassiness out of your hair.” – Abbie Castillo, Lead Hair Stylist, The Spa at Wine & Roses

My hair is oily at the roots, but dry at the ends and has no volume- tips?

A. “Focus on shampooing the roots and not so much the ends, and do the opposite with conditioner. Make sure you have volumizing shampoo and conditioner- it will keep hair from getting oily and add volume. Oh, and use dry shampoo between washes for both volume and to kick oil.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist

A. “Follow up your color service with a glaze to help seal the cuticle. Try not to wash your hair in hot water, cooler is better. Use a sulfate free shampoo to help hold the color. There are also shampoos for home use that have tonal value and can treat brassiness.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist

A. “It depends on what you’re doing. For a blow out use a round brush. Definitely get a backcomb brush, great for creating volume. There is a wet brush that is great for gently de-tangling fine hair without breakage.” – Ann Staley, Alter Custom Hair Design Owner and Stylist

I want to go blonde- how long should that transformation take if I’m currently dark brown? How can I be sure it’s being done safely and correctly?

A. “There is no easy answer to this question, it depends on many variables, and you should consult a stylist. But you definitely want your stylist to use Olaplex with this color choice. Going blonde is not something to be rushed, you should allow as much time as possible.” – Iva Watson, Salon Sirah Owner and Stylist A. “First, don’t try this at home- it will be a disaster and you’ll end up spending quadruple the amount for color correction. It also matters so much what you already have on your hair. If you currently have a box color on your hair it will need to be corrected- but if you have had professional services it will be easier. 1. Have a thorough fact-finding session.

This step sets the foundation for your plan, and though it can be time consuming, it’s very important. Many focus on one or two important aspects of their plan (insurance or retirement planning, for example) but all plans have many areas that people may not have considered. Those additional planning areas can actually help you achieve your hot button planning goals. Individual goals are extremely diverse and can include everything from retirement, estate or legacy, and education planning, to insurance analysis, investments, taxes, and more.

2. Put together a customized plan.

It is important that these plans evaluate many different investment

As much as clients would love it, markets do not go up at a predictable rate each year so the financial plan must account for these environments. It’s important to note that while Salvetti does not process tax returns or create the trusts that make up the estate plans, they strive to work with clients’ other trusted advisors (CPA, attorney, insurance professional, etc.) There is not one phase of the financial planning process that will cover all client needs so it is imperative that everything works together. “All oars need to move the boat in the same direction,” so make sure all of your trusted advisors are in sync for your common goals.

3. Implement the plan.

Take the customized plan and begin the process of putting it to action. You might be amazed with the number of people who go through the planning process and fail to put it to work.

4. Monitor the plan.

Aside from the first step, this is the most important step because it takes some interaction from you. Be sure to relay life-changing events to your planner. These events include job changes, major purchases, marriage, birth of children or grandchildren, death, or divorce.

Financial plans are dynamic and they need to change with you.

It’s easy to fall in love with the color of a couch or the woodwork on a bed frame, but design isn’t the only element that matters when it comes to choosing furniture for your home. Comfort is key.

“I have a lot of customers that come in and say they hate their furniture; it’s uncomfortable, it doesn’t fit them,” shares Susan Daniger, interior designer and co-owner of Daniger Furniture in Lodi (the oldest family-owned furniture store in San Joaquin County). Durability and ease are important

when selecting pieces to furnish your home. “There’s actually an art to [buying furniture],” she says.

First, consider your space. Buying a large sectional for a small family room poses the same problem as selecting a bistro table for your grand dining hall. Furniture has to fit. “There’s lots of different size furniture,” Susan says.

“It’s very difficult when people go into a large store and try to get the visual of that will fit into their home.”

Combat this issue by bringing measurements and a tape measure into the showroom. Knowing the dimensions of the space you need to fill as well as the exact dimensions of the furniture you’re considering will save you from surprises later. There’s nothing worse than a cabinet that sticks out two feet from your wall and can’t be opened at the same time as the back door.

Lifestyle also plays into furniture selection. How many people eat at your dining room table on a regular basis? How many family members gather on your couch for family movie night? Furniture needs to suit your lifestyle.

Perhaps most important, consider your own size. “Nothing is worse than a short person whose feet are off the ground or a tall person whose knees are up around

their ears,” Susan explains. When you step into a store, sit in a few different pieces to decide what is comfortable. Staff at Daniger is trained to notice how people are sitting so they can make recommendations to maximize contentment.

I am all about having a plan, a list, and being organized. Heck, I’ve always planned out my day, week, month, and year so much so that my family has fun teasing me about it. If you follow me much, you know I always say you must have a “Master Plan” (stern face) when doing any decorating or remodeling.

But ouch, now I am suggesting you don’t need to have a plan? “What gives”, you say?

Here is the rub, you can design a room without a plan, if you follow some simple, basic rules of color harmony. Our brain wants harmony because it makes you feel calm and no matter how many nice sofas, pretty chairs, or charming rugs I show you, without harmony it is a big disaster.

So if you are one of those people that balks at anything remotely like a plan, but o.k. with a few rules, then here are the three rules of color theory (and there are a gazillion books about this) that you can follow and your room will look pulled together and “feel” great.

PREVENT tooth decay 

Tooth decay is described as the destruction of your tooth enamel. It occurs when plaque, a bacteria film that forms on teeth, produces acids that attack tooth enamel activated by contact with sugars from food or drink. Without proper care, the plaque presents a welcome environment for cavities. Also referred to as pediatric dental disease, tooth decay is the number one chronic childhood illness. While cavities can affect everyone, they are more common in children. (However tooth-root decay, when gum recession allows decay to affect the root of a tooth, is most common in people over age 50.)

Left untreated, tooth decay can result in pain, infection, and tooth loss. In turn, these can lead to problems with eating, speaking, and learning, which are all significant setbacks for children. In more severe cases, malnourishment, bacterial infections, emergency surgery, diabetes, pneumonia, heart disease, stroke, and death are all possible.

The good news is, tooth decay is entirely preventable. Dr. Rafat Razi, a pediatric dentist in Tracy, breaks it down into four, easy-tofollow steps.

1. Eat healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, which increase saliva flow and help wash away food particles.

2. Brush twice daily and floss often, especially before nighttime brushing.

3. Change toothbrushes when they wear out, about every three months, for effective plaque removal.

4. Maintain regular dental checkups, and do not wait until toothache occurs to make an appointment. Children should see a dentist by their first birthday.

These rules apply to both adults and children. Successful plaque removal sets people of all ages up for success, and it is the core of a healthy oral hygiene routine. Fluoride toothpaste also packs cavity-fighting powers, and fluoride supplements can be given to children too young for fluoride toothpaste where it does not naturally occur in the water supply. As a parent, it’s important to take care of your own teeth for several reasons. Not only does good oral hygiene and eating habits help you stave off tooth decay and other related illnesses, it also sets a good example. “When adults set a good example, children will also model their behavior,” Dr. Razi explains.

Don’t forget to help your kids brush, too. It’s not enough just to get the brush in their hand. Effective brushing is necessary to remove food particles, fight plaque, and clear away residue from sugary drinks and snacks.

There’s no denying it – the online world is here to stay. And with that comes a lot of responsibility. The safety of tweens and teens is at the forefront of conversations about online-use, as well as changing social relationships. While these are viable concerns, there’s an upside to the technological uptick. Technology and the Internet put a breadth of information at children’s fingertips and create new ways for them to learn and innovate. Parents and educators should work together to amplify technology as a tool, while minimizing its potential for misuse.

“From kindergarten through college, teachers are using technology to deliver instruction and engage students,” says Margaret Stephens, director of communications at St. Mary’s High School.

St. Mary’s faculty has spent the past two years becoming familiar with iPads and incorporating the technology into their instruction.

“The iPad has allowed me to better attend to the learning needs of my visual and auditory learners,” adds Kim Gillespie, English department chair at St. Mary’s. “I can direct them to specific sites that help them grasp concepts and strengthen skill sets.”

The iPad is also used to analyze and research information, communicate a student’s ideas, and offer a platform for collaboration. It supports essential skill areas to complement—not replace—the special teacher-student relationship that’s at the heart of a St. Mary’s classroom.

While schools may be grooming students for the 21st century workplace, parents need to address the potential struggles that come with the growing use of technology and the Internet. With the click of a but82

ton, post millennials (a.k.a. Generation Zers) can upload photos for their followers, or share emboldened statements with those they barely know.

Staff at St. Mary’s uses filters to limit students’ access to inappropriate web content and exposure to viruses, while also helping students to understand the importance of acting as responsible digital citizens. Social media, however, is a parent’s jurisdiction.

The school only monitors such content when it involves campus threats, peer harassment, or negative comments made about the school.

“Many parents are often in the dark about what is really going on with their children’s social media and other online use,” Stephens warns. To ensure safety,

parents should impose age-appropriate limits on technology, and monitor when necessary.

This could mean requiring a child to friend their parents on accounts or placing time restraints on computer use outside of homework; the specifics are up to the individual. Know, however, that how parents treat technology use at home sets a precedent for the rest of a child’s life.

We all know the importance of every day flossing, but do we do it? When flossing twice a day, correctly, you can reduce your gum pockets, bleeding, and soreness during cleanings by 50 percent. By removing plaque between your teeth daily, you can greatly reduce the risk of cavities between your teeth, saving money that can be spent on fun.

The key here is to remember it takes about 30 days to develop a habit. To keep this habit in the forefront of your mind have a set place for your toothbrush, floss, and paste, and ask your dentist, at your next cleaning, to share proper flossing practices for ultimate results. This will prevent gum disease, which results in bone loss around your teeth and bad breath!

sume. The more processed the food, the faster bacteria in our mouth break down food; causing plaque, tarter, and increased risk of gum disease. Sports drinks and wine are loaded with sugar and acid, just like soda. If you’re indulging in these beverages, have them with your meal and remember to brush and floss after! It is good to wait 30 minutes to brush after eating or drinking acidic foods.

A regular checkup and cleaning will help you avoid painful emergencies. Cavities start small, but you don’t often feel them until they are a much larger problem. A small filling is much less expensive than waiting until a cavity has infected the tooth calling for a root canal and cap. Regular cleanings will help prevent gum disease, which can cause bad breath, bleeding, and receding gums and bone loss around your teeth. One of the first places some cancers manifest can be in the mouth. Be sure your dentist

and hygienist does an oral cancer screening at each appointment. Early detection is important. Also, at Deer Park Dental we take your blood pressure at each appointment. Many patients do not go to their physician regularly. This is a great screening to help prevent heart problems and stroke.

A cataract is an aging change to the lens of the eye that every human experiences if they live long enough. You will hear terms like Independent Living, Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s/Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Some communities may offer all of these options, while some specialize. It is important to ask questions and become familiar with these terms and what each of these levels of care has to offer. Once you are educated, you will then have a better understanding of what level of care will best suit you or your loved one.

As you begin your search and visit communities, remember that you are choosing a lifestyle, not real estate. Be sure to make observations, ask questions, and to carefully consider the answers. Is the environment comfortable to you and the potential resident? Is the environment friendly and welcoming?

Do the associates appear happy, polite, and show respect to the residents and visitors? Is the community clean and free from offensive or masking odors? Are the rooms furnished, or can the resident bring their own personal belongings? What is the longevity of the management and associates? One of the most important observations is: are the residents well groomed and engaged? Are you introduced to residents and associates during your visit? Ask for testimonials from residents and family members. It is very helpful to find out about family involvement—is it encouraged?

Remember, too, that food and dining is an important social experience. Wonderfully prepared and tasteful meals with choices and appealing presentation are

important for mental and physical health. Be sure to have lunch during one of your visits to try the food. Likewise, a full complement of recreational, social, wellness, and spiritual activities should be scheduled. You should review the monthly calendar and see what programs are offered that you or your loved one would be interested in. Be sure that you or your family member will be engaged and that there are programs offered that would spark their interest. Visit more than once. With summer fast approaching, many of us in San Joaquin County look warily to our garage, as we plan for spring cleaning. Somehow, Styrofoam packaging from holiday gifts, paint cans from fall projects, and the kid’s outdated electronics have all found a new home – cluttering our valuable storage space.

De-cluttering is a breeze when items belong in trash or recycling bins, but what about things that can’t be thrown away curbside?

It is not only illegal to dispose of items like fluorescent bulbs, paint, electronics, and appliances in curbside trash, but it is also detrimental to the environment and can wreak havoc on our soil, air, and water.

Because of the inconvenience of disposing of these items properly, many people let them pile up in their homes. Fortunately, the San Joaquin County Department of Public Works is here to help! As Planning and Materials Management professionals, analysts David Gorton and Elisa Moberly explain that there are numerous convenient locations that offer disposal options for many of these items. Residents can visit SJCRecycle.org for a comprehensive listing of locations to drop off items, such as computer monitors, cell phones, fluorescent bulbs, plastic bags, paint, appliances, used motor oil, tires and more throughout San Joaquin County.

Once discarded, they are considered hazardous by the State of California due to their high levels of toxicity, corrosive materials, and heavy metals. If properly recycled, the reported three billion rechargeable batteries sold in the U.S. each year can be reclaimed, and their valuable mate-

rials and rare metals can be used to make other products. Common stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Staples offer free, in-store recycling bins.

Paint cans are also a common culprit standing in the way of your spring cleaning. Push them into a corner no longer, because stores like Ace Hardware, Kelly-Moore Paint, and Stockton Color Center, as well as the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, all happily take your left over paint (water or oil based). Resins, solvents, pigments, and toxic and flammable additives—hazardous to human health and our environment—all make paint a no-go for curbside disposal.

propriate manor allows for a reduction of waste piling up in landfills and boosts our community, as recycling creates many jobs within our community! “Proper disposal of hazardous materials protects your health and your family’s future,” encourages Moberly. “The Communities of San Joaquin County strive to make disposal more convenient for you by working with retailers and public agencies to provide local drop off sites.”

TAKE ADVANTAGE HOW of the CALIFORNIA TO ENERGY Upgrade SPECIAL P R O M OT I O N A L SECTION

The Energy Upgrade California program gives homeowners incentives to advance several items within their home, including the HVAC unit, water heater, windows, and attic insulation. These updates are all environmentally friendly and can help save money in the long run, but sometimes the upfront costs deter individuals from taking advantage.

With this program, however, homeowners can gain up to $6,500 in rebates based on the improvements they make.

To participate in the program, homeowners must use a participating contractor of the Energy Upgrade California program; Lovotti Inc. is a one-stop shop that can do all of these upgrades for you. Here,

To gain the most from the program, professionals take a comprehensive look at all of the systems in the home to determine which upgrades can offer the most savings by reducing energy use. To qualify, simply own a single-family residence, two- to four-unit townhouse or condominium, or a two- to four-unit building in a homeowner association and choose eligible upgrade options to reduce overall energy use.

After a home upgrade professional provides an overview of the potential upgrades, homeowners can choose to undergo a regular home upgrade offering up to $3,000 in rebates (qualified by three or more basic upgrades) or an advanced home upgrade to receive up to the full amount. Customized bundles provide varying rebates based on the specific upgrades chosen. The exact rebate amount is decided

by these upgrades as well as the test results pre- and post- installation.

When dealing with rebates, the money invested (or part of it) is returned at a later date; in this case six to eight weeks after the final testing and all city and or county inspections have been signed off. The idea of being out several thousand dollars is enough to make some homeowners cringe, but this program offers certainties to calm those worries. Lovotti Inc. can also finance these upgrades through the pace programs available such as CA First and the HERO program. “Once we have a signed contract for the customer and we enter the homes information into the Home Upgrade and Advanced Home Upgrade program energy auditing software, the software shows the eligible rebates,” says Ryan Prudhel, HVAC Manager at Lovotti Inc. “The rebates are guaranteed.” Slight variations, however, can occur based on test results.

Cabrillo National Monument

OUTDOORS Adventure

Take advantage of the favorable weather and spend your day outside. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (1253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.) will leave you speechless. Climb to the top of one of the rocks overlooking the ocean. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular from this place, but it’s a worthwhile venture any time of the day.

It’s also a prime location for snapping a few photos. Not only does it capture the essence of San Diego—all crashing waves and blue skies—anyone looks good against that backdrop.

While tourist attractions are popular for a reason, taking the road less traveled is a welcome escape. Cabrillo National Monument (1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr.) marks Juan Cabrillo’s discovery of San Diego, but perhaps more impressive is the sea cave located on its western side. Only accessible during low tide, it’s a hearty hike not meant for everybody, but if you’re up for the challenge, the payoff is huge.

Looking for an easier trek? La Jolla boasts caves, coves, and tide pools (Coast Blvd.) that are more accessible. It’s another adventure best set for low tide, sans the hefty hike. Here, the magic is created during high tide when water is trapped in the rocks, creating fun-to-explore tide pools.

BALBOA Park

Balboa Park is one of those places tourist maps will send you, but it doesn’t take away from the beauty of this urban cultural park. The 100-acre San Diego Zoo (2920 Zoo Dr.) is located here, and it houses over 3,700 animals made up of more than 650 species and subspecies.

This includes the giant panda, a rarity among zoos across the world.

Perhaps best known for its open-air exhibits, a concept it helped pioneer, the animal habitats emulate a more natural environment. See the animals from new heights, with a gondola ride through the trees, or stay on ground with a guided tour bus that covers 75 percent of the park. Better yet? Work off the calories of San Diego’s infamous grub by walking.

Once you’ve exhausted your zoopportunities, explore the rest of Balboa Park.

The opportunity to learn never diminishes. It’s a constant and incredible force that propels us toward an ever-changing and promising future. The more we know, the more our eyes open to a world of possibilities. But as we grow older, we sometimes lose that flicker of enthusiasm for the new and unknown. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up in such a fast paced and ever-evolving society. Luckily, our love for knowledge needn’t ever decline.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of the Pacific strives to bring promising students back to the classroom. As DeeLynn Rivinius, Program Representative for OLLI@Pacific, explains, “OLLI@ Pacific serves as a source of good memories, intellectual growth, and fellowship with others.

Our classes and lectures have a lasting impact on our members.” There’s no requirement such as having been a student of the school, or better yet, having gone to college at all. OLLI@Pacific has only one goal in mind: Connecting with seniors above the age of 50 and giving them the chance to take hold of each learning opportunity at their disposal with no pesky exams or final grades to detract from the experience.

With class sizes varying between 10 to 20 students, and 20 to 50 for lectures, students have a diverse range of like-minded peers to connect and converse with. Some of the university’s top instructors and retired personnel, and experts from across our community teach the courses held directly at the university or an off campus location in Stockton or Lodi. The program is always open to insightful suggestions from students for new courses, one being the Zen Photography class, taught by Glenn Williams.

Classes with OLLI@Pacific are broken down into semesters available in spring, summer, and fall.

These semesters provide students with a variety of courses that will either meet throughout the semester, will meet two to three times, or will be 112

1 Cup chopped strawberries 2 Large egg whites 1 Cup of heavy whipping cream ½ Cup sugar, divided 1 Tbsp lemon zest 1 Tsp unflavored gelatin ½ Tsp vanilla • Pinch of salt DIRECTIONS:

Combine strawberries, one tablespoon of sugar, lemon zest, and salt in blender and let sit 10 minutes. Blend until smooth. Place two tablespoons of water and gelatin in a large bowl. Let stand five minutes. Place six tablespoons sugar and three tablespoons of water in a saucepan and bring to a simmer and cook four minutes. Add egg whites to gelatin mixture and whip with mixer until foamy, about one minute. Gradually add remaining one-tablespoon sugar and whip on highest speed until soft peaks.

Big name wineries that bottle and distribute vino around the globe aren’t hard to find in the Lodi appellation. It is, however, the smalllot estates that make this area special, and everyone experiences a glimmer of pride when they are the first to know about a local gem. Here in Lodi one of the best places to find a flavorful vino is Harney Lane, where small production, 100 percent estate-grown wines reign superior. Impress your friends with your knowledge of one of Lodi’s best wineries before word gets out.

At Harney Lane, the fruit that goes into making their one-of-a-kind, tasteful wines is all grown on-site. “We are proud to be 100 percent estate,” Co-owner Jorja Lerner says.

Originally a family farm, the owners took on a new venture when Kyle and Jorja Lerner, along with Jorja’s parents Kathy and George Mettler (who died in 2013), decided to branch out into wine production as a means of preserving their land. A total of less than 1000 cases were turned out in 2006, Harney Lane’s first year in the wine business, but they have since upped their supply to meet demand.

Today, the winery bottles approximately 5000 cases annually, allowing locals to enjoy ample amounts of sophisticated wines while keeping its small production charm in tact.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of its business model for true vino enthusiasts is that 95 percent of Harney Lane wine is sold at the winery itself.

There’s a particular allure in sharing a bottle of zinfandel with someone special that wasn’t simply picked up at the store. The effort speaks volumes. Not to mention, it garners the purchaser a little wino-cred. “Our winery maintains a focus on handcrafted, award winning limited production wines,” Jorja explains. “With a small production, you rarely find our wines anywhere but at the winery itself.”
