One night while working late at the office, I followed the sound of classic rock, and it led me to Hutchins Street Square’s food truck mania. People posted up on the lawn, children running around; all enjoying a cool summer night, a fantastic band, and a variety of eats from a round up of local food trucks. Of course, this concept is nothing new. People have been serving ethnic eats street side since the early 1900s, and all major cities are no stranger to hot dog stands, and other street food vendors, but the food truck craze brought a taste of east coast charm all the way across the country and right into our Central Valley.   It not only ignited a love within residents, but it breathed life into others who found themselves out of jobs, unable to afford their dream of owning a restaurant, and a host of entrepreneurs and closet chefs. I love the concept because I am an entrepreneur at heart, and learning of how local food trucks got their start was certainly interesting. From seasoned business owners and chefs, to families who simply love to cook and want to share a taste of their homeland—we are blessed with a plethora of local food trucks serving up some great stuff every day of the week. And SactoMoFo, a mobile food event planning company, has really nurtured the street food culture—teaming with locals to bring us a food truck mania in every one of our San Joaquin cities, nearly every week of the month through October.   There’s just this sense of community at these manias, and I think that’s what I enjoy most. People gathering to enjoy a space, food, and an atmosphere, all so localized that the impact could not be greater. The monetary support these food trucks receive are in turn sent back into the community, creating this fantastic spinning wheel of community success and growth. The feeling is similar to what was felt at our Best of San Joaquin Party last month—this sense of unity, respect, and praise. The energy created by the best of the best all celebrating in one place could certainly be felt as I traveled down Main Street, into the tasting room, and through the banquet hall at Viaggio Estate & Winery.    There’s something to be said of over 1,400 people tipping their hats to their favorites, meeting them on a personal level, laughing and dancing the night away. This was a first of its kind for us here at the magazine, and I’m excited to say it certainly won’t be our last. If you missed out this year, don’t be too bummed by our spamming of killer party pics, and instead keep an ear out for what we’ve got planned for the future. See you next month,

“The neighbors think I’m weird,” he says of the eight-foot spider and octopus displayed outside his residence. But, these installments represent what Jerrod considers his niche— insect and animal inspired art.    Functional and non-functional, Jerrod has created many installments throughout San Joaquin, like his bike rack shaped as a bookworm, bedded into the concrete outside of the Lodi Public Library, a Pergola found on Lodi Avenue that's large enough to park multiple cars under, and a 10-foot metal cross with a yinyang center piece displayed at the Spanos Family residence in downtown Stockton.    In addition to creating functional art Jerrod makes a great effort to always incorporate recycled materials—an aspect that is showcased through his favorite piece—a coffee table constructed of fabricated materials and a 1918 Buick wheel.   In order to design and form such pieces, Jerrod relies on a profound visionary process to ensure he builds something incredible. Often times he begins by familiarizing himself with 34

objects that inspire him, taking time to fully absorb all aspects before hitting the drawing board. From there he fosters his idea, sometimes for months. But more so, Jerrod enjoys the physical process of constructing the piece most.      “I’ll find myself—out of the blue or half way through a project—starting to

pray, asking for guidance,” he says. “Sometimes I’ll be by myself working on a project and I’ll get so emotional, I’ll need to take a break for a few minutes and get over it. And most of the time that’s when I know it’s good, because if it gets to me then it might get to somebody else.”    Inspiration often guides Jerrod as well, as he looks to his wife and twoyear-old, who help fuse his style with child-like characteristics.    “My wife says, 'Oh look at this little cartoon, wouldn’t it be cool to make something like that?”’ he continues, “And that’s how the bookworm came about.”   The humble sculptor also credits his work as a teacher as a huge source of inspiration. Privately instructing students on his property a few times a month, Jerrod admits he looks to pupils Elsa and Valerie, instead of modeling himself after

a well-known historic sculptor. “Elsa is 70 and I just get so inspired by her, she could come over and grab the most miscellaneous stuff out of a garbage can and weld it together and make the most beautiful piece you ever saw,” he says with a smile.    Over the years, Jerrod has grown as an artist, in more than just skill set. Initially, he forged art based off of things he enjoys. But just like the metal he sculpts, Jerrod transformed, as a humble and diverse artist, now aiming for something different.    “I've really changed my mindset over the last five or six years," he continues. "This is what I’ve been thinking...I want to see the mom, the dad, and their kids equally enjoy my art—so now I find myself looking for things that catch every type of eye.”

This beautiful focal point on Pacific Avenue allows for meetings and more opportunities for the community to see what their local artists are capable of. It also houses an array of workshops that members can participate in to continue improving their work. Art breathes life, bringing focus to history, people, and ideas that were once relics or entirely unknown. Like a wave of in-

spiration that flows across our region, Art Expressions of San Joaquin showcases a rotating display of local and regionally known artists—which is how the non-profit of over 45 artists received its second name: The Gallery on the Move.    The venture began in 2012, when Arturo Vera, Susan Winton, and Vanessa Hadady formed a non-profit whose goal was to showcase works from across the artistic spectrum. These include paintings, photography, jewelry, and sculptures, and even music and writing.   Backed by seven board members, Art Expressions has blossomed into a platform that establishes new artists, promotes 36

learning, and gives back to its city.    We spoke with Ana Vera, Chair of Art Expressions and wife of Arturo Vera, about the perks of becoming a member. She explains that, “Once an artist joins Art Expressions, they can showcase their art at all the venues and at events. As far as showcasing art at the gallery [on the Miracle Mile], it will be juried. We also want to encourage guest artists to exhibit at the gallery. As far as exhibiting work at the County Administration Building and at the airport, there are certain restrictions because these are County buildings and so it must curated.”   And where else can these outstanding pieces be found? A multitude of establishments, ranging from the Hilton Hotel to restaurants like Mezzo. Seeing these works have opened eyes to the creativity of Stockton and its neighboring cities. Ana contin-

4 TIPS to CONSERVE WATER  BY COPPER WILLIAMS

Although we received a few downpours this winter, make no mistake, people! We’re still in a severe drought and it’s going to take a few more years of heavy storms before we’ve made up all the water we’ve been missing out on. And

that’s why, as earth-friendly citizens of San Joaquin, we got together with Regina Rubier, Water Resources Program Manager III of Delta Water Supply Project, to find out what we can do to make the most out of the precious resource we obtained last winter!

Maintain & monitor the efficiency and quality of sprinkler lines.

What’s the point of a sprinkler that doesn’t work, anyways? All that water is centralized into one very mushy spot on your lawn or garden, doing your precious plants no good against the dreaded heat of summer. Do yourself a favor next time the sprinklers pop on and check to see which are still working and which need a little work themselves!

Check for a running toilet.

Reduce outdoor watering.

Remember those annoying neighbors, growing up, who were more interested in watering down the sidewalk with their sprinklers rather than their lawn? Yeah. Don’t be those people. As Regina states: “Water on a sidewalk or any other surface other than the roots of plants and flowers or grass is wasted water.” Check with your city to find out your neighborhood’s watering days and if there is a time duration.

And no, we’re not talking about the one you need to go catch. If a toilet is continuously running, which means that water is still pooling into the bowl even after its finished its flush cycle, it’s needlessly going down the drain. “Same concept as above,” Regina admits. “But if the toilet constantly runs, the amount of water is magnified.”

Fix plumbing leaks.

“A leaking shower head or faucet with a streaming drip can waste thousands of gallons a year,” our water guru confides! Don’t believe us? Try placing a bucket under that tiny drizzle and see how quickly it fills up. Multiply that by how long it took for the bucket to fill and… see where we’re going with this? It’s a lot. Fix the leak! 40

RENAISSANCE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY SUPPORTS COMMUNITY LITERACY  BY COPPER WILLIAMS There’s a new trend spreading across San Joaquin that’s got book enthusiasts buzzing! The Little Free Library—a program started in Wisconsin in 2009—has taken our nation and other parts of the world by storm. Bringing books to every

neighborhood it possibly can, Little Free Library appears in the form of miniaturized houses, barns, and even refurbished newspaper vending machines—full of books free for the taking.    Chairman Moses Zapien of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, one of the leading individuals to bring the program to Stockton, spoke with us about both its purpose and humble beginnings in our port city.    “We started the program in Stockton in May of 2014, in response to a University of the Pacific report on literacy in San Joaquin County,” he recalls. “The report showed that 66 percent of third graders in the county do not read at grade level.” A shocking number, further backed by evi-

dence that many of those students do not move on to graduate high school. Hoping to improve those numbers, the Chairman, along with a few select individuals, began taking steps to promote the libraries in Stockton after a few had begun sprouting up on their own.    “A core group of us approached The Record newspaper and asked if they would be willing to donate some old newspaper vending machines to use as the first set of libraries,” he states. Twenty-two in total were donated. “With the community’s help, we were able to clean, paint, and ultimately transform them into little libraries and place them in disadvantaged communities.”    And why these communities? Zapien explains that, “We wanted to put these libraries in areas where access to city libraries was limited. We focused first on the east and south sides of Stockton. The idea behind these libraries is to bring the library to the people—bring books into the neighborhoods. There are no library cards involved. It’s based on the honor system—you leave a book, you take a book.”

These libraries are maintained by community members or organizations known as Stewards, who add more books to the boxes when they run out and ensure that the mini-library and its contents are appropriate for San Joaquin’s youth. With over 70 libraries already attached to the program and 25 more commissioned to be built by Lincoln High School, the project is a thriving success in its outreach.   But it’s all in thanks to the community that’s backing it, the Chairman points out. “One of my favorite quotes is by Margaret Fuller: ‘today a reader, tomorrow a leader.’ That’s really indicative of what we wanted to do in promoting literacy among our youth. We are just one effort in a variety of efforts going on in San Joaquin County to promote literacy and early childhood education. Nestled inside the orchard-lined banks of the Sacramento River, just three miles from Walnut Grove off scenic Highway 160 sits the Ryde Hotel. Inside its walls, guests will find luxurious accommodations ripe with storied pasts.    Once a haven for gangsters and rule-breakers during the prohibition era, the former speakeasy that served bootleg whiskey to all-star clientele (influential politicians, mobsters, and movie stars) has been shrouded in mystery, rumored to have a secret passageway that led to the river’s end.    “You read in history about the speakeasies and read about prohibition and it just seems so unreal and then you walk into a place like this and you’re not just reading it anymore, you’re feeling it and experienc44

ing it,” says Tina Flores, part of the hotel’s events department.   Between 1927 and 2016, the hotel underwent several management changes and also enjoyed brief stints as a lodging locale for the men and women who built the Delta levees and a rock n’ roll mecca in the 1980s.    Today, the hotel plays host to weddings, parties, and notable Sunday brunches that guests clamor to attend, but the Ryde hasn’t left behind its historic charms. The hotel still offers old-school adornments that wink at its 1920s beginning, but with modernized amenities that offer guests the best in relaxation (think Jacuzzi tubs and gourmet cuisine). It’s hard to believe that San Joaquin Magazine’s annual Best Of issue started with an insert ballot tucked inside of the magazine. Before the

Internet was as widespread as it is today, readers mailed in their top picks for a handful of categories. Today, more than 5,000 people voted in more categories than ever before to show their favorite San Joaquin businesses some love, and to connect on a more personal level with San Joaquin Magazine. We are a magazine that thrives on positivity and praise, and it’s an honor to be able to showcase everything that makes San Joaquin great—from restaurants and wineries, to shopping and entertainment.    There was only one way to celebrate the Best Of issue’s 10th anniversary— with one hell of a party! With Viaggio Estate & Winery as the venue, a good time was guaranteed! The vineyard’s classic elegance shone through, while winners from across categories served up signature dishes and drinks to all. Even the ambiance and extras were created using some of San Joaquin County’s best resources. many consider the industry a trend, New Yorkers in the 1700s thoroughly enjoyed the original concept, served from pushcarts.

As many jumped on board, the media followed, with Food Network shows documenting the start up venture. This is precisely what inspired Stocktonian Saravy Yem to take the leap, growing his delivery service into a full-blown food truck. “We decided to bring dishes that don’t exist quite yet to the public in Stockton,” he says. “Many of our southeast influences stay hidden.” And with that mission, Saravy and his family decided to give San Joaquin a taste of Southeast Asian cuisine, via their truck, Rice Pot Movement.   For Christine Louie, owner of Mamas and the Tapas, the dream of opening a brick and mortar restaurant was out of reach, “So my husband, daughter, and I decided to try a food truck.” The family based their business model and menu— that can be found at many local events and the business park in Brookside—on their family values. “We’ve always centered everything around food,” she explains.    Today, Christine works solo producing favorites like Jerk Chicken and the Mama’s combo, which features Puerto Rican rice, beans, a beef empanada, and a chicken flauta.    The family affair continues on in another local favorite, A Moveable Feast, the brainchild of father-son

Fast-forward to 2011, just months after the official end of “The Great Recession”, when Forbes Magazine named the food trucks we know today as the number one small business opportunity.   The industry’s startup costs, which statistically fall under a $100,000 investment, served as a breath of fresh air for many facing financial difficulty, unemployment, or business closure. Its appeal also spread to those that harbored a love for cooking, chefs in search of change, or those with an interest in small business ownership.

duo Doug and Sam Seed.   When Sam was laid off, he and his father began preparing homemade meals for neighbors and friends. The Seed family recipes received such strong response that they formed the catering service, Morada Eats, in 2008. Doug says his passion, fierce desire, and love for cooking, is what prompted the idea to morph Morada Eats into the iconic green truck that can be spotted roadside in Lodi nearly every day of the week.    “We bought a trailer from a guy, and we finished it off, acquiring a char broiler, deep fryer, and cold hot steam table,” Doug continues. “My son and I installed the refrigerator and freezer, and did another major rebuild a few years ago.”   Following the purchase of a truck customized to best prepare Thai food, Mony Vangsoulatda's wish of sharing her family's close ties to the traditional cuisine of their homeland, became a reality. The venture simply made sense, as Mony grew up under the wing of her mother— who ran a local restaurant—until it closed and she retired

in 2012. Just a year later The Green Papaya served their first roadside customer and has since become a local favorite.   Another local inspired by family and food, is Alfonso Ochoa. Since 1998, Alfonso worked a second job during harvesting season to support his passion for cooking

alongside his family. With a simple menu of tacos—and his fellow workers as customers—La Picosita continued to grow until he could afford a more permanent location, now on the corner of Turner and Church Street in Lodi.   As the industry continues to boom,


many chefs across the country are enticed by it’s nature, and this was just the case for Sam Hissayko, a local chef with over 23 years of experience. “I used to work in the big restaurants, and always wanted to open my own,” he explains. “So, I said, ‘okay, let’s start with the food truck.’”   His truck, Go Falafel, filled a community void because, as Sam explains, there weren’t many options for those looking for Mediterranean or vegetarian food. So Sam hit the ground running, posting up at flea markets and now at Chuck E’ Cheese, on Pacific Avenue in Stockton. After months of struggling to see a return, Sam is pleased to say that, today, “people love my food!”    Entrepreneurial spirit led Alvin Costa, a lawn care business owner of 14 years, to cash in on the craze. "I always enjoyed making kettle corn on the beach with my family," he says of the inspiration that sparked a mobile tent set up.   Since then, Costa’s Finest Kettle Corn has certainly grown, as their food truck offers additional eats from three local companies, including hot dogs and ice cream.   “When I started my business, I chose to give back twenty percent,”

Alvin explains. “For fundraisers, school functions, sporting events— we’ll come on site and whatever we sell we donate twenty percent back to the foundation. And that’s how I’ve gotten a lot of business…being able to give back to the community.”    Alvin and Costa’s is a perfect testament to the benefits reaped by a food truck community. The profitability spans beyond the business owner, as many trucks use local produce, and then put their earnings back into the community they serve. In addition to monetary support, the food truck culture also unites community.   San Joaquinians have taken this trend under wing, with help from SactoMoFo, uniting trucks with others in the area, to bring the best together on one lawn as the bands play.   Regardless of which San Joaquin city you reside—chances are your community is hosting a round up sure to satisfy a variety of tastes. It’s a must-stop for fans of the salty treat that originated in Atlantic City.

Set up camp and lounge away. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head up the stairs to Sam’s and grab lunch. Outdoor seating (available on a first come-first serve basis) is coveted property—the eatery was named one of the top three outdoor dining spots in the Bay Area by San Francisco Magazine (just one of many accolades the ten-year-old business has received)—and the lobster rolls are a must-order.    Despite its award-winning cuisine, the vibe at Sam’s is laidback and decidedly un-stuffy. Roll up in your beachwear and you’ll fit right in. A large dining area surrounded by windows as well as a bar stocked with local brews are decent second choices to sitting outdoors.    Fancy yourself an adrenaline junkie, or at least not an athletic amateur? Try your hand at surfing. Dave Alexander at Open Ocean Surfing (260 Grove St.) is revered as one of the most knowledgeable and experienced surf instructors in the area. As an avid surfer himself, Dave knows how to spot the best waves, and gauge ones beginners and experts can handle based on skill level. With the motto, “if you can swim, you can surf,” Open Ocean is both accessible and inclusive. Simply show up with a can-do attitude and they handle the rest. Your one and a half- to two-hour lesson will include equipment. Remember, the water in Northern California is chilly, even in August, so stop by one of those shops for a wetsuit before you dive in.   Fancy yourself more of a spectator? The Mavericks Cliffs Trail is an easy 2.5-mile hike ending at the site of the infamous Maverick’s surf competitions. These sometimes-deadly contests take advantage of the treacherous conditions at this point so it’s definitely not the place to learn on your own (waves that crash can often be recorded on a Richter scale due to their intensity and size), but if you want to watch some of the best in the world hone their craft, this is where to go.

If the Maverick’s jaunt didn’t wear you out, head out on one of these longer trails instead: Purisima Creek Redwoods (a moderate, 7-mile, half day hike located on a preserve in the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking Half Moon Bay) or Purisima Creek-Whittmore Gulch, (a moderate, 10.5-mile, half-day trail that is a slightly longer version of the popular Purisima Redwood Preserve area hike and starts on the eastern trailhead on the coastal side). GHOST TOWN: If you’re drawn to the slightly unsettling, stop off at Purissima (near the junction of State Route 1 and Verde Road). Marketed as a ghost town, its history states it virtually fell off the map. What was once a bustling town in the 1800s is now little more than a cemetery. Some don’t see the charm, while others can’t help but marvel at the fate of the small town (the mystery remains in what actually happened to cause its demise). If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you might miss it entirely.

HARLEY FARMS (205 North St.,

Pescadero) is a working farmstead dairy with 200 alpine goats on nine acres of pasture in Pescadero. Visitors are invited to stroll into the farm to see goats and llamas in paddocks and pastures, as well as visit the on-site cheese shop stocked with award-winning cheeses and a luxurious range of goat milk lotions and soaps, jellies and honey. For two days, visitors to Half Moon Bay are encouraged to check out the Old Fashioned Country Festival. Since 1991, artists have gathered to showoff their work at the annual event. In addition to the fine arts on display, handcrafted goods, and down-home country grub throughout, there’s a kid’s area full of activities, as well as live entertainment during the festival. Proceeds benefit local youth programs.

If you’ve ever taken a bite out of a watermelon, it’s no surprise how this juicy produce got its name. The watermelon is both a fruit and a vege-

table, because it grows from a seed and is harvested and cleared from the field (like any other veggie.) People have enjoyed watermelon for centuries, as the produce made its way from native Africa and spread throughout the world 94

by way of merchant ships. Here in San Joaquin Valley, we are among the top three counties in California for watermelon production. In 2014, county farmers produced nearly 94,000 tons of watermelon, according to San Joaquin County Agricultural Commissioner’s office. Having such an abundance of watermelon means loads of benefits for people who eat them as well.   Watermelon naturally contains high levels of lycopene – an antioxidant linked to healthy perks. Eating this juicy fruit and vegetable can help improve heart health, bone health, and prostate cancer prevention. The best way to get the most out of a watermelon is to allow it to fully ripen. Slice the watermelon into thirds, creating “pizza” slices from the melon. Lay the slices out on a chopping block or serving tray. Slice the bananas and place 1-3 on each slice of watermelon. 1/2 of a seedless watermelon (the little kind – about 3 cups worth of fruit when chopped) 1/2 a red onion • 1 jalapeño • 1 lime 1/2 a bunch fresh cilantro • Kosher salt DIRECTIONS:

Slice the watermelon in half. Place the flat side down and cut off the rind around the edges. Dice the watermelon into small cubes. Chop half of the onion, half of the cilantro leaves, and all of the jalapeño (cut long ways along the outside and rotate the pepper – instead of cutting through the center of the jalapeño – so that you make strips instead of rings. Discard the center/stem. Then slice into small pieces.). Juice the lime. Combine all the ingredients with a few shakes of salt. The moment the car turns onto the expansive 25-foot wide driveway that leads to Durst Winery & Estate in Acampo, visitors are transported to another world. Described as a “hidden gem” by Owner Cassandra Durst, the winery is a place for gathering, honoring its past as the private residence of the Fairbanks—socialites who inhabited the home until 1968.

Every wine has a story—the vineyard, the grower and their family, the workers in the field that pick year after year to bring our grapes.”   Cassandra applauds the Lodi appellation for producing a series of one-of-a-kind wineries, and says Durst Winery & Estate is no exception. “The sprawling lawns are begging to be picnicked and played on. The tasting room is classic yet warm and inviting and the Fairbank’s home is a constant reminder that the wild days of prohibition are a part of this estate’s history,” she says.    And the winery acknowledges its original owners. Wild days as a prohibition party house when partygoers would park their cars amongst the vines while they drank booze in the well-stocked basement, have transcended

“You can’t tell from the outside what’s actually in the property itself,” Cassandra explains. “It kind of takes your breath away.” Inside of the old, historical estate (built in 1915), staff pours an array of wines made from fruit sourced from well-known, local vineyards. The Fairbanks Red Blend—made from Lodi malbec and cabernet sauvignon grapes—joined the winery’s lineup (which includes albariño, barbera, zinfandel, petit verdot, pinot noir, and red and white blends) this month. “It is with

You’ll never be bored with the beer and wine selections at Brix and Hops in Lodi. Owned by San Joaquin natives and husband-wife duo, Carrie Gooding and Jeff Daniel, the establishment carries 24 rotating beers and a selection of local wines. The concept for Brix and Hops came when a place that served both beer and wine couldn’t be found in the Central Valley. 98

“We were always looking for a place with both great wine and great beer,” says Jeff. “We could always find one, but not the other. We were pretty sure we were not the only people on this mission.”   Their quest for a bar that served both ended when Carrie and Jeff did a soft opening of their business in April and an official ribbon cutting on June 9th.   Since their opening, Brix and Hops has strived to show appreciation for the fun found in craft beers. For those unfamiliar, a beer flight is available, boasting any beer on tap served up in five ounces, perfect for taste testing. That way, you have the option of sampling their many offerings without investing in a pint— that is, until you find your favorite.   The opportunities seem endless, and although their tap is constantly rotating, Brix and Hops does include resident breweries, like Track 7 Co., Twelve Rounds Brewing Company, New Glory Craft Brewery, and Belching Beaver, to name a few. “They come out with so many seasonal things now days, that I wish I had 240 taps,” Jeff exclaims.   Brix and Hops has further teamed with resident brewers to offer beer enthusiasts

something special—tap takeovers! These beer nights are educational and fun, as brewery representatives explain beer profiles and share interesting facts and tips, while attendees enjoy giveaways.
