The face of FITNESS Since 1981 In-Shape has been serving San Joaquin County (and beyond) with a mission to create places of belonging that motivate the community to live happy, fit, and healthy lives.

What started as a one-off, opened by a retired doctor with the goal of helping people get in shape and prevent some of the illnesses he saw in his practice, now serves gym-goers from Yuba City to Cathedral City.

It all started at the West Lane club in Stockton where David Wright is the General Manager.

“Aside from the tenacious focus on fitness programming, we always put people first – whether that’s our members or our team members,” David shares. “My favorite way we do this is with our Fit Club – rewarding members for their hard work every month with quality prizes they proudly use and wear outside the club.”

At In-Shape Health Clubs, members are introduced to emerging fitness trends, quality programming, their signature training system Move7, racquetball and tennis tournaments for adults and youth, and—newly added—pickleball.

The trend of pickleball is just catching on, but David and his team are proud it’s part of the In-Shape line-up. Not only is pickleball the fastest growing sport in America, it’s also highly accessible—anyone can do it.

An interest from members started the program, and the In-Shape team saw it as a great way to add another amenity, included in every membership, to serve the community even more. “It’s awesome to see all of our different groups of members try their hand, and then get hooked on it,” David says.

What really makes In-Shape stand out, however, is the dedication to community. Everyone fits in at In-Shape clubs from spin fanatics to heavy lifters. There are classes for seniors and for kids, plus amenities the whole family can enjoy together.

The face of JUICE BARS Mark Sarale opened his first Nekter Juice Bar in March of 2018, and the Stockton shop quickly became a staple for those in search of a healthier juice.

So why are people clamoring for Nekter juice? The brand is dedicated to fresh, quality juices, bowls, and desserts. The juices are made from fresh fruits and vegetables delivered to the shops three to four times per week, the base of the smoothies and bowls come from cashew milk made fresh daily on-site, and all of the products are free of refined sugars, yogurts, and juice concentrates.

Since then, Sarale has taken over an existing Roseville store and is opening a Modesto shop with his two sons. He’s also partnered with two other businessmen to bring more juice bars to the Sacramento area.

“Everything we have is as fresh as can be,” Mark says. Even the vegan ice cream—sweetened with agave nectar—is made from the same fresh cashew milk.

Mark originally got into the juice business for two reasons. He’s an experienced franchiser with San Joaquin businesses in other markets, and he’s a dedicated health and fitness nut. These passions collided when Mark’s wife told him about the Nekter shop in Roseville.

Guests are invited to order from a menu of smoothies, pressed juices, fusions, acai bowls, and vegan ice cream, or create their own concoctions. It’s also a great place to start a juice cleanse.

Mark and his two sons, Marcus (pictured) and Julian, have turned the franchise into a family business, with Marcus running the Stockton shop and Julian working to take over Roseville/s.

The face of HEARING SERVICES Doug Wesson’s own hearing loss started him on a venture in 1979 when he opened the first Wesson Hearing Aid Center in Manteca. As an Audioprosthologist, Doug has expanded the company with locations in Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, and Modesto, and brought on a second provider, Julia Tyner, to grow his vision.

“When you don't hear well, you are missing this vibrant world we live in. Imagine never hearing your grandchildren again, not hearing the birds chirp, or not hearing your spouse when they say ‘I love you,’” says Julia, a board-certified hearing instrument specialist and licensed hearing aid dispenser at Wesson Hearing Aid Center.

At Wesson, the focus is on family. Every person who walks through the door receives a high standard of care as staff listen to concerns, answer questions, and walk guests through the process of getting and using hearing aids.

Anyone age 18 or older is invited to get a free hearing screening at Wesson, and, if a hearing loss is detected, the practice will loan out a pair of hearing aids for patients to test drive before committing.

Anyone over the age of 50 should get annual hearing screenings, Julia suggests. Because Wesson offers this service for free, there’s no excuse to skip it. And, because hearing loss is gradual, it can go unnoticed.

Good hearing, in addition to improving communication, can slow the progression of disease including dementia, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, social anxiety, and balance issues. Hearing aids cannot make these conditions stop, but they can keep sufferers healthier for longer.

CARDIOLOGY Dr. Manshadi knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. “During a complicated pregnancy and birth, competent doctors in Israel saved both my and my mother’s lives,” he explains. Today, he seeks to emulate the confidence of those doctors by saving lives, educating others, and truly honoring the Hippocratic Oath.

Named a top doctor by Castel Connolly, Dr. Manshadi began volunteering and administering EKGs at UC Davis Medical Center as a college student at the age of 18. There, he met Ezra Amsterdam, a teacher and mentor. “He instilled in me the love of cardiology,” he says.

There was not only a love, but serious talent, as Dr. Manshadi dove deeper into the study—and with the ability to justify and analyze complex entities and categorize them, he excelled. “If your gift and passion are synonymous, you will be successful and happy.”

In May 2013 Manshadi Heart Institute welcomed patients with a simple yet profound mission: Improve the lives of patients through excellence in cardiovascular education, heart disease prevention, and the highest-quality treatment available. From prevention to intervention, the Institute offers a full spectrum of cardiac care.

Dr. Manshadi personally improves the lives of the general public, raising awareness of sudden cardiac death in athletes and donating his book proceeds to purchase and install AEDs in schools across the country. “It’s very important to know how to use and AED, and you never know when you’re able to save someone’s life,” he says. “When applied within first two minutes, there’s a 90 percent survival rate.”

In his free time, Dr. Manshadi enjoys coaching soccer and supporting a league he funds for young children.

For Sami Terra, memories at the coffee shop on the corner date back to childhood. Having grown up as a loyal customer, Sami built a close bond with the former owners of the shop. But it wasn’t until she went away to college that she started working at a coffee shop herself and became passionate about the specialty coffee industry.

Sami knew she wanted to return to Lodi after graduating, and it was as if the stars aligned when she got a call from the owner of House of Coffees telling her that she was going to sell and hoped

Sami would be interested. Sami says she knew that this was her if not now, then when moment, and in February 2018, she became the new owner.

The face of PUBLIC GOLF In August 2017, Central Golf Company took over the Manteca Park Golf Course, a centrally located, 18-hole public golf course in Manteca.

Immediately, the group made changes. “We’re not just a place to play golf,” says Jeff DeBenedetti, director of golf at Manteca Park Golf Course and owner of Central Golf Company.

Jeff and his team are embracing the idea of community at the new course. A big part of the mission involves bringing junior golf to Manteca. Employees told Jeff they once left the city to play golf at the junior level because there wasn’t a local outlet. All of that has changed. Manteca Park hosts four junior leagues to hit every caliber of player. And with Jeff at the helm—his last junior golf team won the junior’s PGA national championship—young golfers are in good hands.

The full facility is more than an 18-hole course. It also offers a driving range, golf carts, a chipping green, and a putting green,

plus a banquet hall, coffee shop, clubhouse, and store.

For those who haven’t seen the course since the takeover, there has been a significant re-design. The holes were renumbered to encourage a better game flow and a faster pace of play, plus a better last hole experience. What was once known as a slow course can now reasonably be played in just over four hours.

The City of Manteca also hired a new superintendent who is improving the look of the grounds, the playing conditions, and the drainage. Condition-wise, Jeff says it’s one of the top courses in the San Joaquin Valley, and the prices give residents the best value in the valley ($26 on weekdays, $33 on weekends). Perhaps the biggest perk, however, is the course location. “It’s right here in peoples’ backyard,” Jeff says.

Since 1978, Central Valley Eye Medical Group has served the San Joaquin community through premium ophthalmology care.

GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

You may not know it, but in San Joaquin County, there’s a worrying lack of physicians. Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center is actively working to help solve this problem by developing a graduate medical education program to train the next generation of doctors, right here in San Joaquin County.

The program started in July 2018 with an inaugural class of 15 resident physicians across two specialties; family medicine and emergency medicine. St. Joseph’s plans to expand the program and by 2026, they expect to have 184 residents in 12 different specialties. Since residency programs need instructors, the hospital has also been able to recruit highly skilled, experienced physicians to both train the residents and practice medicine right here in our community.

Apart from giving recently graduated doctors the chance to train, learn, and grow at their outstanding medical facility, the team at St. Joseph’s also hopes that the residents decide to stay in the area upon completing their program. “Research shows that a large percentage of resident physicians stay within 50 miles of where they complete their training,” explains Donald Wiley, president

and CEO at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “We’re hoping that if we do this right, we’ll end up retaining a significant percentage of residents in our community.” By trying to select residency applicants who are from California or went to medical school here, St. Joseph’s hopes to increase the likelihood that the new physicians will stay local and serve the population for years to come.

“We’re very proud that our hospital’s size and complexity of patient care gives us the unique capability to develop this graduate medical education program in the Central Valley,” says Donald.

The face of TRAUMA RECOVERY

Kimberly Warmsley is healing the community one conversation at a time. A licensed clinical therapist for more than 10 years, Kimberly specializes in psychotherapy and talk therapy for those in emotional distress. Specifically she works with locals who have experienced trauma. Her services include one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and training for businesses and organizations on how to talk about mental health and emotional distress.

Six months ago, Kimberly opened her own practice, Kimberly Warmsley’s Therapeutic & Trauma Services, in Stockton, where she was born and raised.

“My goal is to first of all decrease the stigma on mental health,” Kimberly shares. Part of that is in the language she uses. “I try not to say mental health as much as other people do.”

in her neighborhood Weston Ranch. The goal of the “Save Our Community” talk was to develop solutions and strategies to build a safer environment.

She also uses her power in grief counseling by organizing events for those affected by tragedy. For example, Kimberly cofacilitated an event for families affected by grief, loss, and tragedy in March. She drove a conversation that allowed participants to heal, taking away some benefits of group therapy without a formal appointment.

“Through education, innovated treatment, and community partnership with our leaders we can heal our community from emotional distress,” Kimberly says.

Instead of creating an obstacle by classifying the need for trauma therapy as a mental health problem, Kimberly refers to this type of pain as emotional distress. For many patients just changing the phrase removes barriers for treatment.
