BUILDING TO SERVE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2023-2028

San Joaquin County is home to more than 152,000 students in public education. Whether those students are in one of 14 school districts, charter schools, or in one of our own programs here at the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) – it is our mission as a service organization to educate, innovate, and inspire in order to build a bright future for San Joaquin County. We have developed a strategic plan for the SJCOE to define us as an organization and steer us as we move ahead over the next five years. Our strategic plan is called Building to Serve because all that we do at the SJCOE is rooted in service. Building to Serve will guide our work and support our core values. It will act as our compass and allow us to align our efforts as we reach for our common goals. At the heart of Building to Serve are five priorities:

Employee Connection and Development

Exemplary Support and Service

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access

We will recruit the best talent possible, invest in relevant professional learning, foster career advancement opportunities, and value employee voice.

We will provide high-level customer service with integrity while maintaining the highest standard of knowledge and resources.

We will ensure every student and staff member has access to support and services to ensure opportunities for success. We will demonstrate an appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion by embedding equity in policies, practices, and planning.

Instructional Leadership

Workforce Development

We will use data to drive countywide instructional change to improve student learning outcomes. We will be an exemplar of highleverage strategies and instructional practices.

We will elevate academic programs and community partnerships designed to produce positive community members and workforce-ready graduates.

LAST THOUGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD LIGHTS Dubbed Christmas Lane, the 1400 Block of Meadow Avenue in Stockton transforms from December 1-31, from sundown until 9 p.m. Dedicated homeowners create vibrant, themed displays to bring holiday cheer to all who visit.

SHOP LOCAL Another ideal spot to find holiday lights is along Miracle Mile. The stretch of road occupied by cute boutiques has plenty of displays both indoors and out. Whether you want to take in the joy of the season from the sidewalk or have some holiday shopping left to do, the Miracle Mile beckons you.

Embracing Holidays the

In February 1923, Miriam Minton, a senior at Lodi Academy, took a trip to the Sierra Nevada for her 18th birthday. After graduating, Miriam studied nursing at Loma Linda University where she met and later married fellow medical student, Lawrence Peterson. The two would settle in Lodi, where Miriam managed her husband’s medical practice and successfully raised five children. At the time of this photo, the Bank of Stockton had been serving customers for 56 years.

There’s no better time than the holidays to extend cheer to our loyal customers and friends. As the

temperatures dip, the leaves drop, and snow dusts the mountaintops, families and friends gather to celebrate traditions. Good cheer and a sense of wonder is in the air. During this season we are especially grateful for the relationships we enjoy in the communities we have the pleasure of serving. Everyone at Bank of Stockton wishes you the Happiest of Holidays!

C

entral West Ballet’s executive director, Karin Reenstierna, embraces this time of year when its community of dancers works tirelessly to perform in its most enchanting production. After holding auditions for “The Nutcracker” at the same time as the ballet “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” was performing, one might think it was time for Karin to relax for a while. But it’s full steam ahead for Central West Ballet as “The Nutcracker” rehearsals pirouette right into its 36th year of entertaining generations for the holiday season. “The Nutcracker” performs at Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy December 1-2 and then The Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto December 6, 8-10 and 15-17.

casts of Tracy and Modesto. The costumes are always a beautiful part of the show reflecting the spirit and energy of each scene. “Our slogan for ‘The Nutcracker’ is ‘Always New. Always Magical,’” says Karin. “Last year, I was able to get this huge grant and we were able to get new backdrops for the party scene and for the second act. That is something René Daveluy, our artistic director, has wanted since he got here 20 years ago.” Pixie costumes and ice crystal costumes were updated last year, and so was the big costume of Mother Ginger. The Sugar Plum Fairy Parties are an exciting postperformance experience available at select matinee performances in Modesto only. “The tickets can be purchased in the lobby before the show and during intermission,” says Karin. “The tickets are $6, and you come back on to the stage and you get to see all the dancers and meet them and get pictures and autographs. Santa and Mrs. Claus are there, and they give goody bags. It’s a really fun time!” The goody bag also includes a certificate for one free ballet class in the spring. “It is a huge tradition for so many families,” Karin says of ‘The Nutcracker.’ “People that come to the Nutcracker don’t necessarily come to anything else of ours. They come from all over Northern California because grandma lives here, or their aunt lives here.” A low-sensory special needs performance of “The Nutcracker,” designed for those on the Autism spectrum, has grown in popularity. Originally, 168 children attended the first performance pre-COVID, and now over 900 children and adults enjoy the ballet performance that includes low level sound and lights, and no dry ice or startling sounds. A sign language interpreter signs during the performance. “I love that these families now make this part of their tradition, too,” says Karin. That performance takes place at noon on December 6. Karin cautions that there are numerous fake ticket and spoof sites online. The only place to buy tickets for “The Nutcracker” is at TheGrand.org for See 'The Nutcracker' at Tracy performances Grand Theatre and GalloArts.org for Center for the Arts Modesto performances. December 1-2 Visit CentralWestBallet.org for additional information.

“Central West Ballet is primarily a professional ballet company. The age of our dancers ranges from seniors in high school, so, 16, 17, and 18 years of age, and then we have dancers 33 and 34 years of age,” explains Karin. Seven years ago, the Central West Ballet Academy was founded, and many of the children cast in “The Nutcracker” are from the Academy. Karin explains, “It’s kind of a ‘no-cut Nut,’ frankly. We have kids who don’t have dance experience. We have kids from other ballet schools. And it’s really a community Nutcracker with about 100 kids that are cast.” Those children are then split between the

CR Porter's Guide to Gifts WHEN AND WHAT TO GIVE A HOST  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D BY SOPHIA ELLE

I

f you’re attending a holiday party or event this season, it’s likely you’ll be gifting something to the hostess. “As a general rule, hostess gifts should be given at a brunch, dinner, or cocktail party,” says Isabella Bautista, the sales manager at C.R. Porter Home in Lincoln Center. They can also be gifted for an overnight stay. But what should you give this holiday season? Hostess gifts should be thoughtful, and this time of year it’s extra fun to choose a gift that is seasonal, as well. Isabella put together a list of some of her favorite go-to items for the holiday season, all of which are available at C.R. Porter. 1) Nest Holiday Candles offer a sweet scent in elegant packaging. They don’t look cheap like some other candles, instead adding a nice touch to any home décor.

3) Little Santas are a great décor item that people can pull out every year. Karen Didion makes a collection of themed Santas so you can infuse a little personality into the gift.

5) Ornament candles combine the function of a candle with the whimsy of a Christmas decoration. Pick them up in varying sizes.

2) Designer name books, candles, and pill boxes add a touch of elegance with function and design in mind. Consider Veuve Clicquet candles or a Coco Chanel book for the coffee table.

4) Holiday décor is another fun option for Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties and functions. Consider an adorable ornament as a keepsake, or perhaps golden reindeer table top décor.

6) Memory tiles are another way to

Through the experience, you’ll follow in the footsteps of Koda, an 8-year-old boy, as you encounter stunning art installations crafted by lantern artists using a traditional Chinese method. The lanterns, some as large as 50-fet tall and 100-feet long, work in tandem with

thousands of LED lights, evoking vibrant colors and an array of textures to create a forest twinkling with winter night lights. Tickets for Koda’s Journey to the Magic Forest are already on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com or the Stockton Arena box office.

Lighting Up the Delta

THE STOCKTON BOAT PARADE IS DECEMBER 2  NORA HESTON TARTE BY

A

parade of lighted boats makes its journey down the Delta, from Wind Mill Cove to Downtown Stockton, each year ahead of the Stockton Tree Lighting Ceremony. Jill Stevenson, who helps put on the parade, decorates her own boat, Martini Shot. “We don’t assign a theme in the parade so you’re open to do basically whatever you want,” she explains. Over the years, her decorations have evolved, and she now uses hand-constructed, over-sized martini glasses as the main attraction, plus multi-colored lights. Roger Hahn, who runs the event in memorial of his mother, Lynn Hahn, says as many as 68 boats participate, including both locals and visitors from surrounding communities like Discovery Bay. “It takes me probably about a week to 10 days coming back and forth to the boat,” she says of the prep work involved in competing. “Some people just do Christmas,” Jill explains. One winner, a San Joaquin County Sheriff, she recalls

34

decorated his boat in a Grinch theme, with the crew donning costumes to match. In the end, awards are given in three categories: small, medium, and large boat classes, with a first and second place prize in each. The judges panel is made up of three local people with an interest in boating, but that are also unbiased. Trophies and plaques are gifted to those who win. The rest of the proceeds, raised from the entrant’s participation fees, are gifted to charity. Each year, the committee putting on the event chooses a group to benefit. In the past, Ebony Youth Foundation, Children’s Home of Stockton, and Sea Scouts have all been recipients. “We like to do charities that have some affiliation with the Delta and boating [when possible],” Jill says. This year’s event will take place on December 2. The boats begin their cruise around 5 PM and make their way downtown by about 6:30 PM. The event precedes the annual tree lighting ceremony held at Weber Point Event Center, making the evening a two-in-one attraction.

DECEMBER 2023

licia Arong lives on a quiet street in Stockton where her neighbors look out for each other. She’s currently keeping an eye on a house across the street that’s being rebuilt, and she’s helping another neighbor who just had a stroke. In a way, this street is perfect for Alicia. It’s a tight-knit community, just like where she grew up—Downtown Stockton of the 1940s and 1950s. “I say I lived on the cusp of Skid Row,” Alicia says, laughing. Many narratives about downtowns—both in Stockton and in other cities throughout the United States—are ones filled with danger and sinister characters. But as Alicia tells me more about her childhood there, I feel a sense of vibrancy. “Downtown was alive," she says. “The ethnicities made it alive. There was a Chinese restaurant where they let me scoop my own ice cream... My mom even had me taking tickets for the various organizations she was a part of.” After a lively career working for Macy’s, Alicia now splits her time volunteering for Dolores Huerta Foundation in Bakersfield and Tuleburg Press in Stockton. She’s on the boards of both organizations, and she has arranged the artful donation displays for Tuleburg’s annual gala since its beginning. “My main thing right now is Tuleburg Press. I think that is something that we need more of in our community. You have a home. The choice was to put it in downtown Stockton to be able to work with children, to work with community members, to teach an art. I’m just very proud of belonging to Tuleburg.” In all aspects of Alicia’s life, community service is a through-line. Her family tree is sprinkled with lawyers and activists, including her famous sister, Dolores Huerta, and volunteers. When I get up to leave, her little dog whines and barks. “You look good!” she says. “Are you happy?” I tell her I am. “Good. Come back any time. Don’t be a stranger!” Even though we’re just acquaintances now, I’ve been invited into her circle, Into her community. And that explains a lot about who Alicia is.

When you don’t have to cook or clean to enjoy it! Going out to breakfast is arguably the best way to start a day, and here, we share some of the most delectable dishes from around San Joaquin that will have you waking up and walking in to order your way to the perfect morning. IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING SWEET: You can’t go wrong with the S’mores Waffle from American Waffle Diner. A large waffle is topped with chocolate chips, golden crisp on the outside, ooeygooey on the inside marshmallows, and graham cracker crumbles, delighting your inner child. The sticky, chocolatey goodness of this concoction will send you into a sensational sugar coma, in the best way. For something truly unique, try the Crepe Brulee, a twist on the traditional Crème Brulee dessert. This dish comes from Midtown Creperie and is made with a Hungarian-style crepe filled with sliced peaches or cinnamon apples, candied nuts for a bit of crunch, and a rich Ghirardelli caramel sauce. Pure bliss. Dietary restrictions are met with ease at Midtown Creperie. They can make truly gluten-free dishes for those who so desire! They offer classic crepe batter, buckwheat,

American Waffle Diner or gluten-free batter options, too. (And if the Crepe Brulee isn’t your style, try their very popular sweet alternatives, the Sou Au’ Lait, a Nutella-and-strawberry filled dish, or the Dixieland, filled with homemade creme filling and topped with strawberries and Ghirardelli chocolate sauce). Honorable mention: the Candy Cloud Waffle from American Waffle Diner. A sight to be seen, the Candy Cloud Waffle is a large, golden waffle finished with fluffy, pink cotton candy and decorations. For a holiday twist, you can try the Gingerbread Candy Cloud Waffle, or the Apple Pie Waffle, with all the warm, cinnamon sugar goodness of traditional apple pie made into your favorite breakfast staple—the waffle. Both are served seasonally. Both American Waffle Diner and Midtown Creperie have robust menu offerings, including savory and hearty dishes, so either establishment is a great choice and has something to delight everyone at your table. If you love a little sweet treat in the morning, you should order a sweet starter or appetizer from Town and Country Café: the Famous Focaccia Bread Cinnamon Rolls or the ever-popular Haystacks. The delectable cinnamon rolls will melt in your mouth and warm your heart. They are made

with buttercream frosting instead of cream cheese frosting in true Town and Country form! (Town and Country Café’s motto is an updated twist on an old tradition, so they always spin classics into new flavors). You can add candied pecans or walnuts for a little extra crunch on the rolls. The Haystacks are a crowd favorite! They consist of egg battered, deep fried, housemade focaccia bread tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with warm house-made vanilla sauce. Truly tasty.

IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING SAVORY: You’ll adore the Crab Cake Benedict from Bud’s Seafood Grille. This rich dish offers all the sweet, briny flavors of perfectly crafted crab cakes complemented with the buttery and crunchy, toasted English muffins and a generous dose of Hollandaise sauce poured atop, creating the ultimate savory benedict. Be sure to plan ahead—you can find this benedict only during Sunday Brunch, served from 10 AM-2 PM. For an incredible atmosphere, try the prixfixe brunch served at Wine & Roses Towne House Restaurant. You can pick between elevated breakfast options and savory lunch mains. They also offer a kids' menu, so the entire party will be well cared for. The restaurant has many options to choose from, but we suggest trying the Smoked Salmon Scramble, which features cremini mushrooms, garden fresh leeks and snap peas, a smooth lemon crème fraiche, and crispy rosemary potatoes. Cocktails are available for those who wish to indulge.

Town & Country Café

Traditional, feel good fare, comes in the form of the Denver Scramble from The Kitchen at Stonebrier. This dish offers dijon’d ham (delicious ham with a decadent Dijon spread), the perfect mix of sweet caramelized onions and roasted red peppers, cheddar and Swiss cheeses, arugula, and cherry tomatoes, all of which will make your tastebuds sing. The Rex Crepe is a famous dish that is not to be missed. Offered at Midtown Creperie (and famously featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives), the Rex consists of juicy slow-smoked tri-tip and asparagus for a pop of green, topped with an incredible basil pesto cream sauce. You have to try it to believe it. Sink your teeth into the savory Italian Benedict from Town and Country Café. You’ll enjoy two slices of garlic-grilled Town & Country house-made focaccia bread layered with delicious prosciutto, fresh arugula, poached eggs topped with creamy pesto sauce, fresh Roma tomato bruschetta, and finished with a balsamic glaze drizzle. These flavors melt together creating a mouthwatering mouthful of savory goodness. The Loaded Avocado Toast from West Oak Nosh

is one for the record books! This dish is their most popular brunch item, served up on Sundays from 10 AM-2 PM (And, due to popular demand, you can now get the entire menu served all day at West Oak Nosh including their Pretzels and Beer Cheese!) The Avocado Toast comes on crisp Genova sourdough bread, smothered with house-made avocado mash, eggs made to your liking, drizzled with both housemade chipotle and roasted garlic aioli, and topped with fresh microgreens. West Oak Nosh has a full bar and offers delicious bloody mary cocktails and mimosas to give your brunch a little extra pizzazz.

IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING HEARTY: Nothing beats the traditional Chicken Fried Steak and you’ll love the version served up at The Kitchen at Stonebrier. This crispy brunch main is double dredged and has the most delicious truffled mushroom gravy poured atop and served with golden brown country potatoes and eggs however you like. Sometimes you need breakfast that will work wonders and fill you up. That’s where The Shipwreck

shines from Bud’s Seafood Grille during Sunday Brunch. The Shipwreck mixes ham, leafy-green spinach, fresh scallions, and crispy potatoes with scrambled eggs before it’s topped with cheese, sour cream, and diced tomatoes. You’ll be feeling ship-shape in no time. Alternatively, you could try Bud’s Seafood Grille’s famous flame-broiled tenderloin medallions, served with three eggs in the form of Bud’s Beef and Eggs. (Those tenderloin medallions are a fan favorite and keep customers coming back morning, noon, and night!) Bud’s Seafood Grille has been doing Sunday Brunch for 30 years and offers an all-inclusive meal

for one price. Each brunch comes with two glasses of champagne, muffins and coffee cake made from scratch, delicious coffee, potatoes, and half a bagel. Be sure not to miss the quiche of the day; flavors change all the time but each is housemade and delectable! The Diablo Skillet from Mimosas Gourmet is the perfect option for those who crave a little spice in their lives. Packed with delicious chorizo, jalapeños, tomatoes, and queso fresco this skillet is sure to satisfy. It’s topped with sour cream and served with fresh salsa on the side to even out the flavors and satiate your palate. Mimosas Gourmet takes reservations Monday to Friday at their Lodi location on Elm Street but is open seven days a week.

IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING VEGETARIAN/VEGAN: The Vegan Chilaquiles from Market Tavern are an excellent option. This dish combines “Just Egg” and ground “Impossible Burger” with tortilla chips, fresh and vibrant ranchero salsa, plenty of avocado, and vegan cheese to deliver the traditional chilaquiles flavors without eggs or meat. Another fantastic choice is the Vinnie Vegan from Town and Country Café. This dish offers scrambled “Just Eggs” served with delectable vegan Italian sausage links, and hand-cut breakfast reds seasoned with their custom TC spice. And if sweet is more your style, don’t miss their incredible Vegan French Toast, a crowd favorite that is made with Town & Country house-made focaccia bread, dipped in “Just Eggs,” and grilled and topped with fresh seasonal berries. Isn’t it nice to have options? As an added bonus, Town and Country Café now has a market inside the restaurant where you can purchase fresh baked breads, pastries and cakes, plus deli sandwiches and Italian imported and local specialty food items, including Town and Country house-made ravioli. Vegetarian and scrumptious go hand in hand with Terra Coffee’s Avocado Toast! This dish is served on toasted sourdough bread and topped with avocado spread, house vinegar, onions, and microgreens.

IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING BOOZY:

Town & Country Café

Mimosas Gourmet is a great choice for a boozy breakfast. (Hey! Sometimes you’re just in the mood, right?) The Chilaquiles paired with the Super Mimosa, served in a giant goblet, is the perfect way to start a perfect day. The Chilaquiles come with scrambled eggs with chorizo on corn tortilla chips, drenched in their house-made red California sauce, topped with red onions, queso fresco, and sour cream. For an extra little party to start the day, try the Super Mimosa, a chilled bottle of champagne with your choice of concentrated juice flavor. Mimosas Gourmet also serves up mixed cocktails. They offer a very extensive menu of beverages from unique Bloody Mary cocktails (try the Jalapeño Bloody Mary!) to micheladas, Irish coffee variations, and more. For those looking to really let loose on your birthday, try the Super Mimosa Challenge. If you finish a Super Mimosa in ten minutes or less, you pay only one cent for your drink. You can also make your order for pickup including, of course, their

incredible mimosas. The Dancing Fox in Lodi offers the picture-perfect Champagne Brunch. With this experience, you can have exactly what you want while you sip on some champagne. They offer an omelet bar, country potatoes, crispy bacon, sinfully delicious house-made sausage, eggs benedict, scrumptious sourdough waffles, French toast, fresh pastries, a variety of seasonal fruit, and bread pudding because, let’s face it, even brunch deserves dessert. With unlimited coffee and juice and a refill of champagne, the Champagne Brunch takes all the stress out of brunch and leaves you with a memorable and mouthwatering meal. Honorable mention: Market Tavern offers a variety of signature bloody marys, each with fresh, made-to-order fixings, making them practically meals within themselves. We recommend the Smoked Pig, which has sweet and crispy applewood bacon, half an egg, a cheese-stuffed fried olive, and pickled vegetables, or the Italian Stallion, served with a meatball slider, pepperoni, parmesan cheese, red chili flakes for a bit of a kick, and pickled vegetables. IF YOU’RE CRAVING SOMETHING LIGHT: If you want something fresh and crisp that’ll have you ready to face whatever may come your way, try the Avocado Toast at Delta Bistro and Lounge. This dish is served on a slice of whole grain toast and two eggs any style, topped with feta cheese along with both bacon and sausage and a cup of fresh seasonal fruit. Light, but filling. Alternatively, if you want the perfect light burrito, try the Chorizo Burrito. This burrito comes with chorizo and scrambled eggs, packed with potatoes, cheese, sour cream, and salsa, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. Healthy and light find the perfect balance with the Quinoa & Poached Eggs from Market Tavern. This dish is served with organic spinach and salsa verde, and just so happens to be gluten-free. The Lox Bagel from Terra Coffee is also a solid choice. Whipped up in a flash, this dish is served on your choice of bagel with cream cheese spread and smoked salmon, topped with

capers, house vinegar, onions, and microgreens. The Oxford offers elevated, light breakfast options. The names of their dishes borrow from English spelling since they serve up favorites from the United Kingdom. The Kale and Goat Cheese Omlette or Welsh Rarebit are both great choices. The Welsh Rarebit is not to be missed, served on traditional British toasted bread and topped with savory cheddar cheese, it’s perfect for a portion that will satisfy but not overwhelm. You can add a fried egg to make it “Buck Rarebit.” Another benefit of The Oxford is the live pianist they feature each Sunday during brunch from 11:30 AM-2:30 PM. A touch of live entertainment helps make everything you taste just a little bit yummier. hen Ashley ColombiniRanuio had her children, she became invested in her holiday decorations. She started with just one tree but has slowly grown her collection to eight—each with their own theme. “That first year, the excitement on their faces as they adorned the tree with twinkling lights, colorful ornaments, and glittering ribbon was truly magical. It ignited a spark within me that grew exponentially each year,” she says. “As our children grew so did the number of Christmas trees in our home. Witnessing the joy and excitement from my family and all who enter our home during the holiday season, made it clear to me that having just one tree simply wouldn't be enough to capture the spirit of Christmas.” Decorating starts the beginning of November and the eight trees all have their own inspiration. “Our biggest tree standing tall at 12 feet, this majestic beauty serves as the centerpiece of our Christmas decorations,” Ashley says. This tree features old-world ornaments that represent extended family. She also has a tree decorated exclusively with Lenox ornaments and another with Mark Roberts fairies. Her two children have trees in their bedrooms filled with their

hand-made creations and there are two family Santa trees, as well. The final tree is a gold and silver pillar of glamor and sophistication. Themes tend to be the trend for those who decorate multiple trees each year. Our own Suzanne Ledbetter has four full-sized trees in her home. Much like Ashley, the focus is on a large centerpiece tree. For Suzanne, this is a formal and elegant dining room decoration with four-inch gold netted and garnet ribbon and ornaments in shades of gold, red, and chocolate brown. The family room tree is more playful—and a bit smaller at nine feet tall. “Adorned with black-and-white checkered and burlap ribbon, the ornaments are all themed in buffalo plaid and hammered stainless steel,” Suzanne shares.

abodes DECORATE YOUR OWN

Looking to expand your own holiday decorations? Ashley, who also happens to own an events business, has tips. And if doing it alone feels overwhelming, you can always hire her for the heavy lifting. “I can provide guidance on tips and suggestions… or personally come decorate your tree.” 1. Choose a specific theme or color scheme 2. Consider adding a variety of ornaments 3. Make a statement with your tree topper 4. Add garland and ribbon accents 5. Ensure your tree shines bright with lights 6. Have matching tree skirts or one that matches your theme As you’re building your collection, Suzanne has tips for saving money. “Start with your main tree and each year or every other year… purchase another tree when they are on sale after the season,” she says. “Look for ornaments on clearance that have a theme and go from there. And remember, you don't have to do it all in one day.”

FESTIVAL OF TREES

The San Joaquin County Historical Museum’s Docent Council hosts this event each year, with 70 trees on display across the museum’s nine buildings. Families can take in the themed creations decorated by community organizations and individuals and also take part in the festivities, which include crafts such as making rag dolls, tin punch ornaments, and handmade candles. Patrons can also purchase fresh evergreen swags and magnolia wreaths. “Our Barnyard Boutique is overflowing with handmade and bargain holiday fare,” says Veray Wickham, the event’s chairperson. “This year is the 31st annual Festival of Trees and we have had around 3,000 attendees each of the past two years.” The event will be held on December 2 and 3.

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE

is the season to escape for snowy, cozy fun, and while hitting the mountains is top of mind for many, there’s plenty to do off the slopes, too. So, whether you’re looking for an alternative to snowboarding and skiing or you simply want a robust lineup of après ski activities, we have you covered with six of Northern California’s best winter destinations.

YOSEMITE Some of the national park’s higher peaks are off limits in the winter months, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. The towering rock formations and stunning landscapes are overtaken by an almost eerie calm this time of year, but adventurous visitors are soaking it in instead of shying away. Snowshoeing is one way to trek through Yosemite. Dewey Point offers views of El Capitan, Half Dome, Mt. Hoffman, Mt. Conness and the Clark Range, and you’ll traverse through meadows and fir and pine forests on the way. Winter also brings incredible natural phenomena to the park; keep an eye out for frazil ice, firefall, and snowcones (not the kind you eat!) Just outside of the park, Tenaya Lodge is a centerpiece for winter activities and boasts its own terrain park perfect for beginners. Badger Pass features ten runs and backcountry skiing tours, plus lessons. When you’re not skiing, enter the park. Winter-worthy treks include Lower Yosemite Fall, the Yosemite Valley Loop, Mirror Lake, and the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. If you want to see some of the higher elevations, take a bus tour to

Wawona’s Pioneer History Center, Yosemite Valley including Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Valley View where you’ll have opportunities to explore on foot, as well. The Sierra Nevada backdrop makes other activities extra special this time of year. An outdoor ice skating rink, for example, is the perfect excuse to get outside and enjoy the falling snow at Tenaya. The outdoor playground also lends itself to snowtubing adventures for families. If you want a little more adrenaline, rent a sled from the Lodge and hit the sledding hills. Guests also enjoy taking part in some of Tenaya’s favorite summer activities in winter months. Bike rentals are offered year-round to explore the winter wonderland of Yosemite this time of year. Archery courses and lessons are also still available, in winter—gloves recommended to stave off frostbite. And when you’re ready to unwind, a Black Bear Old Fashioned will warm you from the inside out. Guests are welcome to bring any of their drinks from the bar to one of the property’s fire rings.

SIERRA CITY Located in the canyon of the North Yuba River on California State Route 49, Sierra City offers a quiet getaway with a backdrop of the magical and snowy Sierra Nevada Mountains. While downhill skiing and snowboarding isn’t accessible here, cross-country skiers like the area, and specifically Bassets Station. But there is more magic off skis, too. The Yuba Pass Snow Park is located just a few miles from the city center. With more than 100 miles of groomed winter trails, the destination is prime for snowmobiling and snowshoeing (as well as cross-country skiing). Horses are even permitted on some of the trails. For those who can brave the cold (and with the right gear) winter camping in this area is permitted, and it offers a unique, secluded wilderness experience for guests. You will need a permit to visit the snow park through May 31.

Tenaya Lwodge

Continue your picturesque winter escape by booking a room at Sierra Pines Resort. The shabby chic, wood-paneled hotel has a very cabin-like feel, boasting cottage charm in the rooms with a view. When huddled inside, families can play pingpong, pool, and board games or even order room service. Perhaps the most unique après ski activity in town is the Sierra Hot Springs. Located about 30 minutes outside of Sierra City, The Temple Dome Area features a hot pool that runs 110-112 degrees F, encased in a large geodesic dome. The skylights and stained glass add to the majestic ambiance of the resort. There are also two cold plunges here for cooling off. Outside, there is a large saltwater pool at and a meditation pool both at 98-100 degrees F, a dry sauna, and a sundeck, The Phoenix Baths are the coolest options at 95-96 degrees F, offered as private tubs filled with fresh water between each guest. Pools are clothing optional.

NORTHSTAR Northstar Ski Resort is world-renowned for its high-flying slopes and backcountry ski and snowboard options, but with the Ritz Carlton nearby, the area is just as much a destination for those who choose not to hit the slopes. The Village at Northstar feels like a scene out of a movie. The centerpiece of the region is a large ice skating rink with a rowdy atmosphere. Guests can listen to live music on select dates and also grab cocktails and mocktails from the bars flanking the rink. If you want to up the ante on the experience, opt for a private cabana with cozy firepits and cocktail options. It’s the perfect place to warm your hands on a cup of (maybe spiked) hot cocoa in between spins on the ice. The Village also allows for plenty of shopping opportunities and a cinema. The Ritz Carlton boasts its own winter activations each year and staying here feels magical from check-in to check-out. Start with a glass of bubbly as your led past the towering Christmas tree and to your room, where views of the snow-capped mountains abound. We recommend indulging in room service in front of your private fireplace while you sit in a cozy robe, and you’ll love SJMAG.COM

Tenaya Lodge the turn down service, which includes aromatherapy and chocolates for your pillow. Outside, drinks are served around the fire, the perfect après ski activity on a cool night. There are multiple ways to indulge, including with craft cocktails at Bourbon Pub, located at the end of Village Run. If you have little ones in tow, s’mores will keep them busy while you catch up. And at Après Overlook, you’ll enjoy storybook views of the rink below while you sip frothy cups of hot chocolate with your brood. If you want to make your own cocktails, sign up for a Flaskology class taught by an on-site mixologist. This experience not only teaches how to make your favorite drinks, but also includes a fancy leather-bound flask that you can then fill with your concoction to keep warm through the weekend. There is a snow park where sledding and snow tubing are available, as well, if you want to get in the snow. The Tubing Hill at the ski resort features a 200-yard hill with a tow lift for easy access. And another opportunity to explore the conifer forest is by trekking it on a fat tire bike; rentals are available. If that wasn’t enough, the property’s heated pool, indoor hot tub, and other spa amenities (including facials and massage) make for a comforting way to unwind after a day braving the elements.

EVERLINE RESORT & SPA Located just minutes from North Lake Tahoe and the site of the 1960 winter Olympics, many clamor to Everline (previously Squaw Valley Resort) because it boasts ski-in, ski-out access. Even if you are not an avid skier, the destination is still perfect for a winter escape. The 405 luxurious rooms and suites offer modern amenities in a rugged outdoor setting. In the winter months, guests can slip into a pair of skates and enjoy the outdoor rink, surrounded by towering trees and snowy peaks before taking a plunge in the heated swimming pool (complete with water slide) and hot tubs. What better way to soothe sore muscles after a day on the mountain than in the resort’s The Spa at Everline? Many of the treatments wink at the alpine surroundings, including A Walk in the Woods Facial, a High Altitude Massage, Creekside Awakening Ritual, Mountainside Expedition, and more. Outdoors, the atmosphere stays cozy with warm fires. The resort’s newest restaurant is a collaboration with local partners that invests in sustainability, dubbed Iron Road Noodle House, located at the base of the resort chair lift so you can dine immediately upon your return from the slopes. You can also grab themed cocktails at the Ski Bar located near the lift. Also available are a sledding hill and snowshoe tours while inside it’s easy to warm up with family-friendly arts and crafts. During winter months, there is complimentary transportation to and from the Village at Palisades for shopping, dining, and more.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE/ HEAVENLY VILLAGE The California-side of South Lake Tahoe is no doubt one of the most popular ski destinations for San Joaquinians. But there’s a lot more than snowboarding and skiing to keep visitors occupied. You can still access the mountain by taking the gondola up to the top. The 2.4-mile ride garners panoramic views

of the mountain, with a stopoff to enjoy the views from a popular overlook. At the top of the mountain, there is a lodge for grab and go snacks and food and beverages. Mid-December, Heavenly mountain’s winter tubing lanes will open. Some of our favorite experiences inside of Heavenly Village include finding a warm firepit to curl up next to. While dining al fresca may sound chilly this time of year, it’s truly the best way to take in your surroundings. Both Base Camp Pizza Co. inside the village and Artemis Lakefront Café offer outside seating with firepits to stay warm. The Woods cocktail at Base Camp is a favorite, and as an added bonus, you can listen to live music while you imbibe. When it comes to late night, get your drink on at

Idle Hour, a multi-story tasting venue that offers cozy couch seating as well as private balconies overlooking the lake for drinks and light snacks.

Heavenly Village’s own speakeasy. Located through the “refrigerator door” at the back of Social House Craft Sandwiches, ask for the establishment’s other bar to be let in. Outside of the village, another way to get into the great outdoors is by renting a snowmobile. There are several outfitters that service the area, including Tahoe Snowmobiles & Tubing, Zephyr Cove Snowmobile Tours, and Lake Tahoe Adventures. Inside of the village, a seasonal ice skating rink is set up and horsedrawn carriage rides are often available at the Stateline marker (where California and Nevada collide). And if you’re interested in wine tasting, you can do it from the warmth of The

Mount Rose is where the locals ski. But when you’re not shredding, you can find other outdoor activities to keep you busy. Snowshoeing is popular on Chickadee Ridge, which gets its name from the hundreds of small birds that flock to the mountain. Year-round you can feed them with an open hand full of birdseed, but in winter there tend to be more. Just keep in mind you’ll need snowshoes to traverse the terrain in winter. Kayaking this time of year isn’t a new idea either, but it is one gaining popularity. Because Lake Tahoe is a deep alpine lake that never freezes over, it’s possible to take to the calm (albeit cold) waters yearround. Perhaps the safest way to do so is on a guided tour, and Clearly Tahoe offers a winter excursion fit for beginners and kids as young as 12. As an added bonus, the kayaks boast clear bottoms, so you get a clear look into the icy depths below. There are also snowmobiling opportunities in North Lake, including Lake Tahoe Snowmobile Tours and North Tahoe Winter Adventures. At The Lodge Bar & Patio just over Mount Rose, guests can partake in après ski culture. Sit back and relax with a bottle of wine, warm cocktails, and brews while you dine on elevated charcuterie boards, pizzas, and more in a cozy lodge setting that feels like a mountain escape. .

aking a sip and feeling the creaminess coat your mouth as you enjoy the full body flavor of that cup of coffee … does anything really compare? You taste subtle notes of the blend prepared specifically with that cup you have in hand in mind; chocolatey, fruity flavors, or even the delicate notes that come from a single origin… is that lemon? The pick-me-up you get from that caffeine kick is made even sweeter when you realize that you don’t have to deal with the acid-stomach feeling that can accompany a regular cup of coffee because in your hand, you don’t have hot coffee, you don’t have an iced espresso, you have the ever-so-popular cold brew. Cold brew coffee has gained popularity in recent years for good reason. What makes it unique is in the name—it is coffee that has been “brewed” (or, more accurately, steeped) with cold water as opposed to the normally hot water used in traditional cups or in iced coffee beverages. Cold brew coffee takes hours to make. Generally, baristas will prepare it with the ground beans they select for anywhere between 12 and 24 hours. Just like regular coffee, cold brew coffee can come from a blend of various beans selected to bring out distinct flavors or from beans of a single origin. Each cup is different, and some say that because of the extended period of time for which the coffee beans and water mix, it creates a more robust flavor profile than hot coffee beverages, which only brew for a few minutes. Traditional cold brew coffees do not come with ice in them since the coffee was already cold as it was prepared, but you can ask for ice with your cold brew, if you enjoy it. Iced coffees, on the other hand, are usually made

with coffee that was once hot, so the barista will add ice to help cool the beverage down to the desired temperature. “Cold brew is a fan favorite,” Laura Garcia, owner of Terra Coffee in Stockton, says. “Cold brew can have a stronger coffee flavor than iced coffee, depending on the cold brew concentrate, and can even offer higher amounts of caffeine like an espresso, without the high level of acidity.” There are nearly limitless ways to enjoy cold brew coffee with the various selections of bean blends to use, syrups and foams added for flavor and texture, and nitrogen that can be blended into the beverage throughout, creating that signature nitro cold brew look and creamy mouth feel. “Nitro cold brew coffee creates a creamy feel without actual cream. It incorporates nitrogen throughout the blend and should have a little foam floating on top, very similar to the appearance of a Guinness draft,” Laura says. Cold brew coffee’s popularity doesn’t dip much in the fall and winter, perhaps due to the versatility of the beverage, the high concentration of caffeine, and the lower acidity, making it delicious to the last drop. “It’s popular year-round,” Laura exclaims. One aspect to note—cold brew coffee does sell out since the coffee shops need to brew it specially for hours before they can serve it, whereas iced coffee can be made within minutes “Cold brew can have a (using hot water) stronger coffee flavor and then cooled than iced coffee, and using, you can even offer higher guessed it, ice. amounts of caffeine like So, if you’re an an espresso, without the avid cold brew high level of acidity.” coffee lover, plan –Laura Garcia accordingly and be sure to purchase your cup while there is still cold brew in stock.

UNWIND

Light Up a Cigar at Lefty’s Lounge LODI’S NEWEST CIGAR LOUNGE  PHOTOS & STORY BY REBEKAH MOAN

C

hris Arrington and Brian Thompson enjoy smoking cigars because it offers a way to hang out and wind down. However, if they wanted a cigar lounge experience, they had to drive to Sacramento or Modesto. Realizing they could create something closer to home, the pair opened their own cigar lounge in downtown Lodi called Lefty’s Lounge about a year ago. “We found out cigars bring people together,” Brian says. “Everyone comes in, gets along, and has a good time. They become friends. You can go to a bar, have drinks, and not talk to anyone. But you can leave as friends with everyone at a cigar lounge. We enjoy that and it made us want to start our own.” Lefty’s Lounge is hidden in an alley between School and Church streets

so it doesn’t garner much foot traffic. However, if you know about the lounge, the building is a sight to behold with its brick exterior and high ceilings. Built in the early 1900s, the historic building is 3,000 sq. ft., which means there’s plenty of leg and elbow room. Coupled with good insulation and seven air filters to keep the air as clean as possible, Lefty’s is a place you want to spend time in. “We created an environment that’s peaceful with classy music playing,” Chris says. “It’s friendly, casual, and has really good cigars. We don’t carry any bad cigars.” A high-quality cigar is one that’s aged, cured, and rolled in a certain way. If the cigar isn’t rolled well, it won’t burn, according to Brian. Some of the brands Lefty’s Lounge carries are Arturo Fuente, Padron, and Plasencia. There are several ways to

enjoy Lefty’s Lounge. Visitors can purchase a day pass to drop into the lounge for the day. There’s also a lounge membership, which entitles the member to not only use the lounge and smoke a selection of premium cigars but also bring a guest twice a month. On Friday, December 8, Lefty’s Lounge is holding an event to introduce its members to new cigars from Camacho and Havoc and featuring discounts and prizes.
