How does a DEXAscan work

You will be asked to lie on a special DEXA x-ray table. The technologist will help position you correctly and use positioning devices such as foam blocks to help hold the desired position.

As the arm of the DEXA machine passes over the body, IT uses two different X-ray beams. The beams use very little radiation to keep the test safer and help to distinguish bone from other tissues. The scanner translates the bone density measurement data into pictures and graphs. Bone is most easily seen in white, while the fat and muscle tissue look like shadows in the background on the technologist’s computer monitor. These results are then reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist or other physician trained in DEXA interpretation

How is the procedure performed

You should lie down on a table attached to the imaging arm. Then the imaging arm moves slowly over the body part that is being examined. During this, a beam of low dosage energy will be passed into your body to capture the images of the bones. The scan will provide the details of the density of your bone. Usually, it will take about 20 minutes to complete the entire procedure.

For post-menopausal women and men age 50 and over, the result of DXA is based on T-scores: A T-score equal to or above -1.0 is considered normal bone density. A T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 is considered low bone density, sometimes referred to as osteopenia. A T-score -2.5 or below is considered osteoporosis.
