REPORT DESCRIPTION Data centers consume huge amounts of power and the heat generated from the systems, servers in a data center need to be maintained at a threshold level for the optimal functioning of the server farm. Factors like PUE (Power Usage Efficiency) and CCF (Cooling Capacity Factor) are used in monitoring the energy efficiency and cooling capacity respectively of the data center. Data center cooling was until recently based on CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units which were effective but had inefficiencies like re-circulation, air stratification and bypass air. This chaos air distribution hence was replaced by the hot aisle-cold aisle strategy which was also slowly replaced by the containment cooling strategy. Traditional cooling systems like CRAC and CRAH are adequate for an overall cooling capacity of up to 10kW and in combination with exhaust ducting can be used for up to 15kW. However this creates hot spots and as load increases with increase in racks or servers per rack, the amount of heat generated increases. Hence other strategies need to be deployed like air containment, closed loop cooling, free cooling etc. The Global Data Center Infrastructure (DCI) Market was around $14.1bn in 2013 and this is expected to increase to around $18.5bn in 2018. Growth factors include increasing demand for servers across countries for faster data access and growing data storage needs along with higher speed requirements for cloud infrastructure maintenance by cloud, big data companies. The DCI market includes racks and enclosures, cooling products, UPS and PDUs. Cooling products have a 10% market share accounting to around $1.4bn in 2013.

ASIA – PACIFIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

The Data Center Market in the APAC region is expected to grow the fastest among all the regions across the world. China is the biggest market and is also expected to continue growing at a faster rate of 17% YoY. Around 62% of Asian data centers are managed in-house (captive) and the remaining are outsourced to colocation service centers, hosted service or is a combination of both. Digital Reality, Equinix, Global Switch, CSF Malaysia are the main companies leading the expansion and investment efforts in the region. IndustryARC expects China to lead the data center infrastructure market (by space) followed by the South East Asian region and North Asia market. MARKET - TRENDS Data center cooling systems in the report are analyzed by size of data centers, type of data centers like Tier1, 2, 3 and 4. Cooling systems are also categorized by their functionality or type like In-rack, In-row, overhead and rear door.  The Global Green Data Center Market is expected to grow from around $25.6bn in 2013 to around $43.5bn in 2018. This covers monitoring and management, IT equipment and power, cooling infrastructure costs.  More than 50% of the data center power expenses are currently coming from the data center cooling systems and this expense can be reduced by employing best practices in data center construction, system configuration and green cooling systems. This in totality will result in a green data center.  Chilled water is the most popular heat rejection type followed by direct expansion (DX) and Glycol as coolants in the data center cooling systems.  North America had the largest revenue share for 2013 followed by APAC and Europe in the cooling systems market for data centers.  For a 500kW IT load the savings accrued from reduced operating costs of fan, chillers and pumps accounts to around $20,000 when row cooling is used over room cooling and it increases to around $28,000 when overhead cooling is used over room cooling.  Hence Row/Rack cooling systems market is expected to grow faster than the overall room cooling systems market.
