The San Jacinto County Hall of Honor had one more veteran added this week as County Judge John Lovett prepares to hang memorabilia of American hero-astronaut, aviator, engineer, and United States Senator John Glenn on the wall in the basement of the courthouse. Glenn, who died last Thursday at age 95, was the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962 and the oldest man in space at age 77 in 1998. He is to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Flags are currently being lowered to half-staff in honor of Glenn on all public buildings across the country, by order of President Obama.

Christmas Around the World was celebrated Saturday in Coldspring during the 34th annual Christmas on the Square event, featuring Santa, music, food, crafts, shopping and a lighted nighttime parade. Santa visited with people of all ages during the day, ending the event in the annual lighted nighttime parade. Parade winners include A Cutting Edge Hair Salon, Family Faith, Community Children Impact Center, Republican Party of San Jacinto County, CSI Student Council and Punkin Evergreen VFW. Best of Show are Family Faith and Community Children Impact Center.

Memorabilia of Glenn is the most recent to join a wall of historical items of individuals from various wars in the United States’ history found on the recently created San Jacinto County Hall of Honor,

According to Everitt, all of the photos, articles of interest and other memorabilia are taken from the Historical Commission’s archives and displayed in a climate protected environment in the basement of the courthouse for all to enjoy. Although it’s in its early stages, the collection of memorabilia in the Hall of Honor covers an interesting assortment of people, including Chester Nimitz who played a major role in the naval history of World War II and Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet; Actress Bea Arthur who achieved fame as the character Maude Findlay on the 1970’s sitcoms “All in the Family.” During World War II she worked as a truck driver and typist in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve; General George Patton Jr.; and the singing cowboy Gene Autry who also served during World War II in the United States Army, becoming a tech sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps. “There are many, many others, including local people,” Everitt said. Early next year Everitt said he hopes to have completed a list of names of those in San Jacinto County who served during World War I to add to the Hall of Honor. Judge Lovett has given the San Jacinto County Historical Commission permission to leave the memorabilia on display as long as they wish, Everitt said. Anyone who would like to visit the Hall of Honor is invited to visit the basement floor of the San Jacinto County courthouse during regular business hours.

Bill to rename Coldspring Post Office after slain carrier awaits Obama’s signature By Martha Charrey San Jacinto News-Times editor

Before adjoining over the weekend, the U.S. Senate joined the House of Representatives in unanimously passing U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady’s bill to rename the Coldspring Post Office for Eddie “Marie” Youngblood, a beloved rural letter carrier. “I am proud to have partnered with the Rural Letter Carriers to honor Eddie “Marie” Youngblood so her husband, George, their sons, George Jr. and Mark, and grandchildren can remember and honor her service at the post office. I thank Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz for their help in ensuring Marie’s legacy will always be remembered,” said District U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady. Brady said the bill now awaits the President’s signature. Just before noon, May 17, 2013, Youngblood was shot multiple times at close range and then set on fire inside the Jeep Cherokee she used for mail delivery. The youngest of her two sons reportedly was on the phone with Marie when she was murdered and heard the shots being fired at POST OFFICE, Page 5B
