A curiosity to learn more about the traditions, art and culture of historical places, led to my interest in architecture. It fascinates me how certain materials / hues work really well with uplifting the aura and ambience of a particular space. Usually find myself either balancing through the creative-practical approach to obstacles or being on the constant run to improve my skill sets, I make sure that I deliver my task with at-most attention to details. Architecture developed the explorer in me, wanting to take up responsibilities that broaden my capabilities. My experience on handling projects, contractors, vendors, has improved my on-site management skills. Looking forward to continue exploring with an intention to nourish the design enthusiast in me.

BREACH CANDY HOME

RESIDENCE /BREACH CANDY/ML_STUDIO

Breach candy home is a 2,000 sq ft apartment situated at the posh locality of Cumbala hill, South bombay.

The apartment is a combination of two neighbouring 2Bhk apartments, leading to massive windows at Front facade serving views. Aim was to keep it minimalistic, like the clients themselves. It was also important to make sure that we do not compromise on the light as the overall height was low (~9’0”)

The project started with identifying cracks on structual members as it was an old building, this raised concerns hence leading to first repairing the corroded steel members inside colums, beams and slabs. Once we received a go ahead, design decisions were implemented.

The pallete is a combination of muted colours, types of Indian marble and Oak wood.

The Handover was a grand success with the clients living in their rennovated home, happily.

DREAM HOUSE

RESIDENCE /ALIBAUG/ML_STUDIO

This project has been a work in progress at Alibaug, clients being furniture manufacturers wood has always been in abundance.

It is a 10k sq ft Bungalow spread across over 5 acres of land parcel. Consists of Living space, 4 bedrooms-bathrooms, Kitchen, Dining, Utility and temple block. It also houses a swiming pool at the terrace.

The space planning was done with keeping ventilation, visual connect in mind.

Whole house is a combination of locally sourced Indian marble, wood and metal. The sloping roof shows use of customised rafter peices.

For bathrooms we’ve tried to acheive a visual connect but also maintain privacy by making use of Glass blocks, which turned out to be successful even visually as it let ample amount of light in. Thus we incorporated the same in the main facade as well.

The central spiral staircase in RCC is the main architectural element around which other spaces started shaping up. Circular windows by the entrance also being an highlight of this on-going project.

SANTOOR

RESIDENCE

Situated along the outskirts of ahmedabad, Santoor tries to catch the essence of the traditional identity of the context adding a sense of contemporariness to it. Materials and finishes played a major role to attain what was envisioned.

The on-going construction shows use of locally sourced Surkhi bricks of various sizes. There has been a keen focus on striking a balance between masonary walls, RCC walls and Surkhi brick walls.

The local concept of Wardha vault has been adopted, it has proven to reduce the temperature of the room drastically, thus eliminating dependence on active technologies.

The Sloped roofs show the use of Guna tiles, again helping with the Hot temperature of the context.

Cantilivered volume at the living room achieved through pre-cast concrete, provides a cut-out for sunlight to enter into the Temple niche, showing a play between light and shadow through the surrounding surkhi bricks which adds to the essence of the space. The wall along staircase shows the use of Concrete blocks, the perforations on them create a jali like pattern, also, the waffle slab above have cut-outs thus ensuring ample amount of light entering into the space. The overall Planning tries to ensure cross-ventilation, Visual connectivity, Transitional spaces, Lush greens and a sense of belonging.

CUBE HOUSE

RESIDENCE /VIJAYWADA/ODD_AMBLI

This Residence at Vijaywada is a mixed type with the owner’s factory on the lower floors, it was important for the upper floors to go in harmony with the rest o the structure. Hence the “cube” concept was adapted. Creating negatives and positives volumes, enlarged windows, double heighted space that sync with the existing factory.

Entering the floor through the lift lobby, the transition space displays a Jali, which has the view of landscape along the central courtyard. Further towards the double heighted Living room displaying the staircase as an aesthetic element, the room also is naturally lit becasue of the skylight along the wall adjacent to the T.V.unit.

The floor consists of pooja room, kitchen, dining, parents room, kids room all aligned as per the directional requirements from the client.

The upper floor consists of the Owner’s room, Guest room and a Jacuzi along the terrace area with a view. The luxurious interiors were based on various material inspired themes. ASTIKYA

THESIS /AN INTERPRETATION CENTER AT DERA BABA NANAK, PUNJAB

Astikya meaning faith. A faith driven project that has made distant dreams a reality.

The project’s existence roots back to the year 1947 when the infamous indo-pak partition took place. A tragic incident causing immeasurable loss. Punjab was hugely affected. This division led to division of culture, division of skill, harmonious way of living and division of places of importance. One such structure that stood through tough times is gurdwar darbar sahib which is 6.25km away from the indo-pak border it was heavily praised by the sikhs from the darshan sthal on the indian side. The pakistani government later allowed by road visa carrying individuals from india for pilgrimage to such places. Atal bihari vajpayee proposed for a corridor between the two countries that could take directly people to the other side, which later led to the construction of passenger terminal building.

Since domestic and international tourism is among the foremost vehicles for cultural exchange, conservation should provide responsible and well managed opportunities for members of the host community & visitors to experience & understand that community’s heritage and culture at first hand.

Thus an interpretation center, interpretating guru nanak ji’s stages of life is proposed along-with accommodations and amenities for the passengers.

The green spaces cover the maximum portion of the site. The recreational zones are placed where activities come to an end/ commence thus becoming a congregation space for visitors.

Massing of spaces have been done in such a way that interpretation center is the first sight of the site. It becomes the focus and stay facilities along-with other functions act as a backdrop.

The footpath under the bridge which visually breaks the site in halves is the main one here because it clearly provides a gist of the site throughout it’s length thus bringing the structures together in harmony.

Vehicular access is mainly restricted till ticket booth as the blocks placed are at walkable distance from one another

reTHINK

Rethink challenges the conventional ways of learning and how a learning resource center works.

Programs that overall focuses on various mediums of gaining knowledge are introduced. It involves music library, workshops that brings out the local artisans which can be conducted outdoors through indoor-outdoor transitional spaces.

Courtyard proves to be helpful in passive cooling the spaces for the given climatic zone. The site, capitol complex which shows the presence of structures designed by Le’ Corbusier impacts the approach to the design. Here, it was made sure that it dwells in with the surrounding along-with maintaining it’s own identity. The concrete language observed in Corbusier’s structures are the inspiration behind the facade design here.

Series of arches not only adds to the aesthetics of the Structure but also makes the overall structure look light. Ways that would engage users in spending quality time at the place formed the basis while planning, options was made available for the users to select their nook where they find it comfortable to take a book out and read it as if they are at their home.

Abundantly lit spaces formed the crux of the structure which was made possible by mainly courtyard, then flexible walls and skylights also played major role.

COST CONSCIOUS ARCHITECTURE

The competition intended for students to comprehensively understand Nari Gandhi’s take on cost conscious architecture through such structures present in current context. One such architect to follow his principles, Ar. Pratik Dhanmer’s private+guest home at Murbad, Maharashtra, was shortlisted to carry out the particular study.

The architect started thinking with the materials available and the concept of house, usually tribal house never has fixed space, so the whole house is designed in that way only, no space is been fixed. As per him, cost consciousness and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

Laurie baker‘s gandhian philosophies is the parameters he works on, which includes enhancing the passive design strategies where material utilization and its source played a big role. His approach helped him understand the value of sources and it’s transportation.

The methods that are used in construction are easily Observed in the surroundings of the village, and is Reflected in the design. Local resources are optimally used. The techniques used in this was an attempt to bring back the techniques they previously used.

The structure merges itself with the local surroundings and still makes a dynamic influence. It proves to be a minimalist addition to it which also takes nature into consideration thus overall proves to be cost conscious.
