I find that the powerful drama in Billy Budd comes from the claustrophobia of emotions unable to be shared. This production exemplifies that, pulling us into the confines of a ship’s hull with intense impact.

W

hen young Billy is pressed into naval service aboard the H.M.S. Indomitable, the recruit’s youth and innocence arouse devotion from the crew, but a commanding officer’s suspicions and dark desire threaten to throw order into chaos. With the rising threat of mutiny, duty and rank are pitted against truth and morality in Britten’s tempestuous masterpiece based on the novella by Herman Melville. Tony Award-winner Michael Grandage takes the audience deep into the claustrophobic atmosphere below and above deck as Britten’s score brings to life the surging energy of the sea. The all-male cast is headed by William Burden as Captain Vere, Christian Van Horn as John Claggart and, in his Company debut, baritone John Chest in the title role.

MANON

LESCAUT BY GIACOMO PUCCINI

B AC K S TAG E W I T H M AT T H E W

It is a privilege for us to bring back former music directors of the Company, and this will be a passionate return for Nicola Luisotti. Puccini’s work of desperate emotions is so different from the version by Massenet we saw here in 2017, and this production creates the perfect world for the trials of young love.

he early opera that skyrocketed Puccini to success, Manon Lescaut brings Italian passion to the tale of a young woman’s conflicted search for satisfaction. Too easily seduced by luxury, Manon leaves her true love for a wealthy older man only to realize her childish mistake …but it may be too late. San Francisco Opera’s former Music Director Nicola Luisotti returns to conduct one of Puccini’s most sensuous scores. Olivier Tambosi (The Makropolous Case) directs a spectacular cast featuring Lianna Haroutounian as the passionate Manon and Brian Jagde as her lost, and found, love. Relive the unmatched feeling of dawning love in all its heart-wrenching splendor.

It’s been too long since this heartfelt classic was on our stage. The stirring overture, the poignant Evening Prayer, the raucous Witch’s Ride—this is a piece that rekindles each of our childhoods. For me, this is one of those operas that envelops you with heartbreaking beauty.

xperience this cherished musical fairy tale in a charming new co-production with London’s Royal Opera. Humperdinck’s gorgeous score blends the heartfelt simplicity of childhood with the excitement and adventure of youthful imagination. Allow yourself and your family to be carried away by this sumptuous new take on a holiday classic starring Sasha Cooke and Heidi Stober as the lost siblings. Enter a magical forest where the trees are older than time, fairies lurk in the shadows, and a house made of candy sits alone amidst the trees. When Hansel and Gretel venture into the woods for food, they are soon lulled to sleep. With only the memory of home as their guide, they must use their wits to defeat a fearsome witch and find their way back to their parents. When the world around us feels large and foreboding, Hansel and Gretel shows us that there is hope to be found even in the darkest of forests. There is something uniquely stirring about early Verdi. Patriotic fervor. Lyrical propulsion. A war of duty and love. Ernani was last on our stage in 1984 and is full of beautiful melodies that you will catch yourself humming for days.

V

erdi’s rarely performed Ernani is a thrilling operatic discovery, an adventurous tale of love and resistance in a time of political oppression. In 16th-century Spain, Ernani is a deposed nobleman living on the run as a bandit. When two powerful men seek to make a prize of his lover, Ernani hatches a plot to rescue her—and free the country in the process. But in a world where tradition and loyalty rule, can an outlawed love win? Director Jose Maria Condemi helms a beautiful production steeped in the lush ambiance of the Spanish Renaissance. Following his triumph in Roberto Devereux, Russell Thomas stars alongside rising sensation Michelle Bradley as the opera’s renegade lovers. James Gaffigan returns to conduct Verdi’s propulsive score.

Handel is the master of emotional vignettes, taking us deep into humanity. I love this irreverent production and am excited to welcome Louise Alder whose blend of heart and precision will be perfect for the title role.

Photos: Cory Weaver.

A sophisticated society woman, Partenope has too many options. She could choose from the seductive smooth-talker, the genuine introvert or a newly arrived mystery man who might be hiding a big secret …and might not even be a man! Throw in the high-testosterone option, who’s bent on conquering Partenope’s kingdom as well as her bed, and anything could happen. Who will be exposed for a romantic fraud, and who will expose their true self? This Olivier Award-winning production transports Handel’s rare comedy to 1920s Paris, mingling stylistic inspiration from the Surrealists with gorgeous arias, stirring ensembles and delightful humor.
