Dear Friends, This is no ordinary time. Our community is caught in a prolonged period of economic disruption that will surely earn a place in the history books.

High unemployment and the lingering effects of the recession have pushed record numbers of people in San Francisco and Marin to the point of hunger. Even families who have always lived securely in the middle-class have been seeking help at our food pantries.

Thankfully, history will also show that our community came together in response to the crisis. Tens of thousands of people poured their hearts, their time and their resources into the Food Bank and made it possible for us to distribute a record 44 million pounds of food this past year, enough for 100,000 meals each day.

Those numbers are staggering — a measure of the hard times our neighbors endure, as well as the generosity of our donors, volunteers and advocates.

While government safety net programs are stretched thin from budget cuts, people can still count on the Food Bank. Thanks to supporters like you, we haven’t cut back.

We’ve scaled up, and we’re getting more food to more families than ever before.

The merger of the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks in January 2011 is a shining example of how we’re adapting to meet the sharp increase in community need. By carefully managing our shared resources we’ve created new efficiencies. As a result of the merger, food distribution in Marin has more than doubled since the beginning of the recession.

This year, we will distribute more than five million pounds of food to at least 20,000 people throughout the county.

More than half of that food will be fruits and vegetables that come fresh from the farm. Our success in Marin shows what can happen when caring, committed people work together.

Our mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, so our responsibility extends beyond food distribution — we also work to create systemic change. The Food Bank is a leading advocate for effective government programs to assist people at risk of hunger. We’re also sponsoring groundbreaking research to determine the food needs of low-income residents in San Francisco and Marin. This is part of our comprehensive effort to ensure that no one in our community has to sacrifice their well-being due to lack of food.

In 2012, we will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Food Bank.

It will be a time to celebrate 25 years of accomplishments — but most importantly, it will be a time to renew our commitment to ending hunger in our community, no matter how long it takes.

Nutrition is important to us, to our community.

In fact, over half of the food we distributed last year was fresh produce. Through our partnership with the California Association of Food Banks’ Farm to Family Program and packers and growers throughout the state, seasonal fruits and vegetables are available at all our pantries throughout the year.

430 tons of food moved each week this year

With a network of 450 nonprofit organizations relying on the Food Bank for supplies, our warehouses are in constant motion. Before the sun rises, our crew is receiving food donations at our docks and building orders for the morning’s deliveries. They start the process all over again in the afternoon.

The scale of our operations requires efficiency. Respect for our clients provides our motivation.

25,000 people gave their time in 2011

Each day of the week, teams of volunteers gather to sort and pack the food donations that come through our doors. From bins of oranges straight from the grove to 2,000-pound totes of beans, volunteers ensure that there are always hands at the ready to pack the food for distribution. This year, volunteers provided 131,000 hours of support — the equivalent of 63 full-time staff.

Getting help shouldn’t be a struggle. We work hard to make sure people have easy access to the food they need.

Throughout San Francisco and Marin, 230 neighborhood pantries provide groceries to local residents each week. Individuals and families are welcomed with a farmers’ market-style arrangement of foods to choose from, including a mix of fresh produce, protein and grains.

High unemployment and the high cost of living keep pushing more people to seek help at our food pantries. In response, we scaled up our distribution to 44 million pounds of food last year, enough for at least 100,000 meals each day — an increase of 24,000 more meals each day than just two years ago. And our food distribution in Marin has doubled since the recession began.

For each dollar donated, the Food Bank distributes $6 worth of food

It takes the entire community to end hunger.

Financial donations allow us to organize transportation for donated product, operate our warehouses and purchase food when necessary. With our efficiencies of scale and our enthusiastic volunteer crews, every gift is stretched to its maximum, with 97% of donated resources going directly toward getting food to hungry people. Thanks to our donors, children, families and seniors who struggle with hunger now have food on their tables.

No child should go hungry.

Kids need good nutrition every day to learn and grow. Meals prepared in the home play an important role in making strong families and helping children develop life-long habits of healthy eating.

Serving children and their families Our 57 Healthy Children Pantries provide low-income parents with nutritious groceries to prepare home-cooked meals, preserving the routine of family mealtimes. Most of these pantries are located in public schools where a majority of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

The number of households relying on these family-friendly pantries has increased 25% over the past two years.

We also provide healthy snacks to more than 20 of these public schools. Our unique Morning Snack Program serves over 10,000 youth each school day, providing wholesome snacks such as fresh fruit and high protein trail mix.

One in five seniors faces the threat of hunger in San Francisco and Marin. For homebound and mobility-impaired seniors, the problem is especially critical.

The Food Bank works to ensure that our elderly neighbors don’t have to worry about how they’ll get their next meal.

Helping seniors live with health and dignity Our Home-Delivered Grocery Program provides a critical support to homebound seniors, helping them maintain their health and independence. While other programs exist for delivering prepared meals to seniors with limited mobility, our Home Delivered Grocery Program is the first of its kind in San Francisco. Partnering with the Department of Aging and Adult Services, Meals on Wheels, Self-Help for the Eldery and other agencies, we now provide groceries for nearly 300 seniors in San Francisco and Marin.

Additionally, our Brown Bag Pantry sites provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere where more than 4,500 seniors receive weekly grocery items. Another 11,000 seniors are served through our operation of the monthly governmental Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

Keeping the focus on nutrition and health Simply warding off hunger for a day isn’t enough. We’re helping our clients achieve a lifetime of good health by providing nutrition education programs along with the healthy foods we distribute.

To encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables, our pantries offer seasonal recipes and cooking tips. We also provide pantry participants with a six-week nutrition course that empowers them to make healthy choices and prepare balanced meals.

From advocating for strong antihunger policies to conducting pioneering research, the Food Bank is working to ensure that no one in our community has to sacrifice their health and well-being due to lack of food.

Driving systemic change to end hunger Through our advocacy initiatives at the local, state and federal levels, the Food Bank is taking the lead in developing a comprehensive view of the entire food assistance landscape in order to best serve each person at risk of hunger in San Francisco and Marin.

Transforming Food Stamps Less than half of eligible residents in San Francisco and Marin participate in CalFresh, California’s food stamp program. Intended as a safety net against hunger, the program isn’t reaching everyone who needs it due to a lack of a coordinated statewide policy. In response, we led the formation of the Alliance to Transform CalFresh, a group of key stakeholders from across California and the nation working to improve food stamp access.

Feeding More Kids Better Food Research now proves that even mild malnutrition can have a profound effect on children’s health, emotional development and academic performance. Yet 20% of the children in San Francisco and Marin face the threat of hunger each day.

In collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District and the Department of Public Health, we engaged an assessment firm to evaluate the district’s school meals program and develop plans to improve quality and increase student participation.

Understanding the Need In 2011, we commissioned researchers from the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality to conduct a groundbreaking analysis of the food needs of low-income residents in our counties during the recession (2007-2009). Using sophisticated modeling to adjust for factors affecting the ability of low-income residents to provide food for themselves, and after accounting for the meals provided by government assistance programs and nonprofits (primarily the Food Bank and its network), researchers determined that low-income residents in San Francisco and Marin were “missing” 1 in 5 needed meals. Notes to Financial Report The Food Bank ended the 2010-2011 fiscal year with an annual operating budget of $13 million. Complete audited financial statements are available online at www.sffoodbank.org or by request.

The Food Bank receives shared maintenance fees from our partner agencies in order to offset the cost of soliciting, transporting and storing food. These fees range from 0 to 18 cents per pound and average less than one cent per pound for the year ended June 30, 2011. * This figure includes the value of the food on hand as of June 30, 2011.
