HOW TO DIAGNOSE

Themostimportant point introubleshooting istodetermine “Probable Causes”. Oncetheprobable causes are determined, partstobechecked canbelimitedtothoseassociated withsuchprobablecauses. Therefore, unnecessarychecks canbeeliminated. Thedetermination oftheprobablecausesmustbebasedon a theory and be supportedbyfactsandmustnotbebasedonintuition only.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS

Ifanattempt ismade tosolveaproblem without going through correctsteps fortroubleshooting, theproblem symptoms could become more complicated, resulting infailure todetermine the causes correctly andmaking incorrect repairs.Thefourstepsbelowshouldbefollowed introubleshooting.

Observe the symptom carefully. Check ifthere are also other problems.

INFORMATION FOR DIAGNOSTIC

Indetermining theprobablecauses, itisnecessary tocheckthe wiringdiagramtounderstand thecircuitasasystem.Knowledge ofswitches, relaysandotherpartsisnecessaryforaccurate determination. Thecausesofsimilarproblems inthepastmustbe takenintoaccount.

Troubleshooting iscarriedoutbymakingstepbystepchecksuntil thetruecauseisfound.Alwaysgothroughtheprocedures consideringwhatcheckistobemadewhereforthebestresults.

Aftertheproblems arecorrected, besuretocheckthatthesystemoperates correctly. Alsocheck thatnewproblems havenot beencausedbytherepair.

Thismanualcontains thecablediagramsaswellastheindividual circuit drawings, operational explanations, and troubleshooting hints for each component required to facilitate the task of troubleshooting. The information is compiled in the following manner:

(1)Cable diagrams show theconnector positions, etc.,ontheactual vehicle aswellasthe harness path.

(2) Circuit drawings show the configuration of the circuit with all switches in their normal positions.

(3)Operational explanations include circuit drawings ofvoltage flowwhen theswitchisoperated andhow the component operates in reaction.

(4)Troubleshooting hints include numerous examples ofproblems whichmightoccur, tracedbackward ina common-sense manner totheorigin ofthetrouble. Problems whose origins maynotbefound inthis manner are pursued through the various system circuits.

NOTE

ComponentsofECI,ETACS,ECS,etc.withECUdonotinclude 3and4above. Forthisinformation, refer to a manual which includes details of these components.
