As you read through this year’s annual report, you’ll discover through our numerous success stories how dedicated we are to delivering the highest level of cancer care.

From screening programs to help detect cancer at its earliest stages, all the way through to our survivorship programs, we’re continuing to improve the level of care we provide no matter where cancer patients are in their personal journey.

We’ve achieved accreditation standards that reflect the quality of care we deliver.

Our survivorship program continues to grow and expand, giving our patients support and help for what comes after cancer treatment. We’ve added new team members in various roles, to provide a wider variety of care and support to our patients. And we’re arming our entire team with the tools and education to provide a seamless experience for every patient we treat.

The future of cancer care is also becoming a reality with our expanding genetics program. The construction of a new cancer center (plans currently underway) will significantly impact how our patients receive care. Every decision and change we make is rooted in our commitment to our cancer patients.

I’m proud of every success we’ve achieved, and look forward to many more future successes at Sanford Bemidji Cancer Center.

Sanford Bemidji Cancer Center continues to receive accreditations. Accreditation is a voluntary process in which outside reviewers closely examine our program and our results. If we meet or exceed specific standards, we receive the stamp of approval.

From fearful to fearless

Charlene’s husband, Jason, shares in his wife’s happiness as she begins her journey down the path of being a breast cancer survivor and looks forward to seeing their daughter retire from the Navy.

One woman’s breast cancer journey

“She’s fearless,” Charlene said about her 18-year-old daughter, Tia, a Seaman in the U.S. Navy.

Tia would likely say the same of her mother, a woman who spent the last 16 months battling breast cancer and facing long-held fears in the process.

“I care less about what everyone thinks or says now,” Charlene said, reflecting on her cancer journey. Before her diagnosis in July 2014, Charlene and her husband, Jason, would have been more hesitant to go to Vegas or Biloxi, Miss., where Tia is stationed.

“Now I’m just going to do it,” said Charlene, who along with Jason has visited Biloxi once already and plans to return in November. “If we have a chance to go see her, we’re going.”

A misinformed decision Initially, Charlene was not overly concerned when she first discovered the lump.

“I actually thought that because I breastfed for 50 months that it would save me,” she said. “I never had a mammogram. I was 45 when I found the lump.”

Not only did she have breast cancer but she also was triple positive for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2.

“At first, I was going to have a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery – and that was it,” Charlene said.

I want to be around to see my daughter Tia retire from the Navy.

Charlene is not sure where she heard such a notion but at the time she truly believed breast-feeding would protect her. But on the Monday after the Fourth of July weekend, she learned it wasn’t true.

“I went in to the clinic and kind of knew that it was cancer,” Charlene said. “After my mammogram, the technician told me the lump was fibrous.”

Charlene was happy to “look like herself” at the ball after her diagnosis almost a year before.

Then Charlene called her surgeon, Mark Claussen, MD. He encouraged her to think of the chemo timeframe as just one small piece of a muchlonger lifespan. She thought of her 8-year-old granddaughter, a bright girl who insists on calling her Spud, a childhood nickname, rather than the traditional grandma or grandmother.

A plan designed just for her

That means the medical oncologist, the radiation oncologist, the surgeon, the genetic counselor, the plastic surgeon and the primary care doctor need to all be regularly communicating with one another.

Charlene’s medical team identified a path through which she could undergo the mastectomy first, followed by chemo.

“

Having a real team approach where people are communicating well with each other is essential in this day and age to getting good care.

“Charlene is a good example of needing to fashion the treatment not only for where the disease is, but also where the emotional state is,” Dr. Claussen said.

As each patient comes into the process with varied understanding of what cancer is and how it can be treated, it is important the medical team work with each other and the patient to develop a treatment plan.

But due to scheduling, Charlene couldn’t have the surgery for three weeks, which was too long to wait.

Charlene’s medical team advised her to undergo a year of chemotherapy and then the mastectomy, but she initially rejected that plan because of deep-seated fears about chemo.

“I’m really proud of how well we work with each other,” Dr. Claussen said. “I think it’s something we can offer here in our small-town setting better than you can in a larger metro area. We’re all here, all in one place.

The people I need to talk to are down the hall, not across the city.”

With the help of staff like Janel Olson, women can find the perfect wig at Bloom the Boutique. Even today, Charlene gets emotional about her journey.

Bloom the Boutique opened in 2014, offering a place where patients with medical hair loss can come to find a new hairpiece or simply seek comfort in a location of their own.

“Feeling good about yourself and feeling happy is huge in healing,” said Janel Olson, manager of the oncology department.

When a woman is diagnosed with a condition that will cause hair loss or involves a treatment that will result in hair loss, such as chemotherapy, her doctor will sign a voucher that entitles her to receive a free wig from Bloom.

In March, Charlene walked into Bloom seeking a wig for a very special evening. Tia would be attending her fourth and final Military Ball through the JROTC program at Bemidji High School. At previous balls, Tia had pictures taken with cousins and friends, but this one would be different.

“I knew we were going to have pictures taken because it was her senior year, her last military ball,” Charlene said.

With the help of a Bloom volunteer, Charlene soon found a wig that felt good, fit well and was very similar to what her own hair had been. It was lighter than she’d expected and she felt like herself while wearing it.

“

This is the least we can do to make patients feel good, to make them feel whole.

“I really liked that it looked close to my natural hair,” she said. “I’m so happy with it.”

Life after cancer

Today, Charlene has finished up her year’s worth of medications and recently had surgery to remove her chemo port. After taking last fall off for treatment, she returned to work in January. Even her hair has now returned, coming in a bit thicker than before and curling at the bottom.

For many cancer patients, changes in appearance caused by treatments or surgery can create challenges in the recovery process. At Bloom, you can gain confidence in a comforting and convenient setting created just for you.

“The thing that most surprises me are the comments I hear,” said Janel. “They ask me, ‘Why? Why are you doing this for me?’ and that blows my mind. This is the least we can do to make people feel good, to make them feel whole. Even if they only wear it once – for that one day, that one time, it really means something.”

Cancer program expands We are pleased to welcome medical oncologists and hematologists Peter Friedell, MD, FACP, and Jasmine Kamboj, MD, to Sanford Bemidji Cancer Center. They will allow us to continue to provide our patients with quality care close to home.

Drs. Friedell and Kamboj specialize in studying, diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases. They also specialize in cancer care and provide the latest medical oncology therapy and treatment services for patients.

Peter Friedell, MD, FACP Medical Oncology and Hematology

Dr. Friedell received his medical degree at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Chicago, and then completed residency and fellowship programs in internal medicine and hematology at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn.

Dr. Friedell currently sees patients at the 1705 Anne St. Medical Oncology Clinic. He is board certified as a medical examiner and in internal medicine, hematology, oncology and obesity medicine.

Jasmine Kamboj, MD

Medical Oncology and Hematology Dr. Kamboj received her medical degree from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India, and completed an internal medicine residency at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Chicago. She is currently completing fellowship training in hematology and oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Kamboj will join Sanford in early 2016 and will see patients at the 1705 Anne St. Medical Oncology Clinic in Bemidji.

Welcome New Physicians Tokunbo Akande, MD Pediatrics

Dr. Akande sees pediatric patients at Sanford Bemidji 1611 Anne St. Clinic.

He received his medical degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Osogbo, Nigeria. He completed a master’s degree in public health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Md., and a pediatric residency at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center in New York. Dr. Akande is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Prabha Dakshayini, MD Pediatrics

Dr. Dakshayini received her degree from the University of Mysore, Mysore Medical College in Mysore, India. She recently completed a medical residency in pediatrics at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Prior to that, she completed a residency at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Mysore Medical College in Mysore, India. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Genereux sees patients at Sanford Eye Center & Optical locations in Bagley and Fosston, Minn.

He completed his undergraduate degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and went on to Pacific University’s College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Ore. Dr. Larson specializes in emergency medicine and received his medical degree from Brown University Medical School, in Providence, R.I. He completed a family practice residency and an internship at Lancaster General Hospital, in Lancaster, Pa. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Ashley Lundin, MD Ophthalmology

Dr. Lundin sees patients at the Sanford Bemidji 1611 Eye Center. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye, from routine eye exams to surgical procedures, including cataract surgery.

Originally from Kelliher, Minn., she received her medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks, where she also did residency work in ophthalmology. She also completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Matthew Nielsen, MD General Surgery

Dr. Nielsen received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Mich. He went on to complete a residency in general surgery at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and Fargo.

He is originally from Bemidji, Minn. Dr. Nielsen is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association and board eligible with the American Board of Surgery.

Tabrez Sheriff, MD Hospital Medicine

Dr. Sheriff cares for patients within the Hospital Medicine Department at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

He received his medical degree from M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Rajiv Gandhi University in Bangalore, India. He then completed an internship from the same university and an internal medicine residency at Detroit Medical Center at Wayne State University and Sinai-Grace Hospital, both located in Detroit, Mich. Dr. Sheriff is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Manit Singla, MD Hospital Medicine

Dr. Singla cares for patients within the Hospital Medicine Department at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

He received his medical degree from Dr. Vaishampayan Memorial Government Medical College in Solapur, Maharashtra, India. He completed an internship from the same university and continued his practice in internal medicine at Detroit Medical Center at Wayne State University, located in Detroit, Mich. He is originally from Punjab, India.

Micah Treuer, MD Emergency Medicine

Dr. Treuer specializes in emergency medicine, including trauma and managing strokes.

Originally from Bemidji, Treuer received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He completed a residency at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Ca., and an emergency medicine residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda, Ca.

Matthew Whitbeck, MD, FACC Interventional Coronary and Peripheral Vascular Cardiology

Dr. Whitbeck has specialized training and holds board certifications in internal medicine, cardiology, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular computed tomography.

He received his medical degree from St. Christopher’s School of Medicine in Lutton, England, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and an interventional cardiology fellowship at Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, N.C.

A tasty, healthy holiday treat Whole Wheat Walnut Bread Directions: In large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and stir until dough starts to leave sides of bowl.

Transfer dough to lightly greased or floured surface. Knead six to eight minutes or until it becomes smooth and supple. (You may also knead dough in electric mixer or food processor or bread machine set to “dough.”)

This bread is a good source of fiber, magnesium and selenium and may help to reduce the incidence of some cancers as well as help support weight control. Making bread is a fun and healthy holiday tradition for both children and adults.

Ingredients: 2 tsp. instant yeast 1 1/4 to 1 1/3 cups water (start with the smaller amount) 3 Tbsp. canola oil 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, firmly packed, or 2 Tbsp. honey may be substituted 1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 cup toasted walnuts, finely chopped or crushed

Transfer dough to lightly greased bowl. Cover bowl and allow dough to rise until puffy though not necessarily doubled in bulk, about one to two hours.

Transfer dough to a lightly oiled work surface and shape into 8-inch log.

Tuck ends under as you place in lightly greased 8 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch loaf pan.

Cover pan loosely with lightly greased plastic wrap and allow bread to rise for about 90 minutes until domed about one inch above edge of pan. A finger pressed into dough should leave a mark that rebounds slowly.

When done, remove bread from pan and cool on wire rack before slicing. Store in plastic bag at room temperature. Makes about 16 slices.

How preventive care can help save lives

“In 2012 my PSA number was four, but in 2013 it was a little higher,” Steve said. “And three months later it was higher again. Dr. Haugen then sent me to Dr. Kosko in Bemidji.”

Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers in American men.

“That was a fun fishing trip and this is a fun time of life for me,” the 70-year-old Steve said.

“You have to take advantage of the time you’re given.”

Keeping a close watch Steve is a proponent of monitoring personal health. Annual physicals are part of that process, and during one of those visits Burton Haugen, MD, at the Sanford Walker Clinic detected elevated PSA (prostate specific antigen) numbers.

A few years ago Steve Wagar took his 8-year-old grandson, Caleb, fishing on Leech Lake. Steve has lived on the lake long enough to know where and when to catch walleyes, and on this outing Caleb and grandpa had one of those days to remember.

Urologist John Kosko, MD, conducted a biopsy and cancer was detected.

“Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers in American men,” Dr. Kosko said. “It is very common in men in their 70s and 80s and, as the population ages, more and more prostate cancer cases are diagnosed.”

Trusted advice and care Steve’s initial treatment included surgery and in January of 2014 he underwent the procedure at United Hospital in St. Paul.

“When Dr. Kosko sent me to St. Paul for the surgery I knew I could trust him,” Steve said.

“He had my best interests in mind and I appreciate that.”

“No one size fits all in terms of treating prostate cancer,” Dr. Kosko said. “It’s a complicated decision. Each patient is 100 percent individualized as far as treatment is concerned.”

Steve’s surgery, however, was only partially successful as the cancer appeared to have spread and some of it was out of reach.

“We kept our eyes on the PSA numbers,” Steve said. “After three months the PSA number started to go up again and Dr. Kosko gave me some options.”

An educated decision Among the choices was joining a clinical trial, which in Steve’s situation included 40 days of radiation treatment under the guidance of radiation oncologist John Bollinger, MD.

Prostate health

What you should know Steve Wagar of Walker is one of about 220,000 men in the U.S. who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013. He was a typical patient in the fact that he was a man over age 65.

Steve Wagar is grateful to enjoy his beautiful surrounding fishing on the lake and spending time with his family and friends.

When a clinical trial candidate is identified at Sanford Bemidji the patient is approached and medical staff explains the potential procedure, the reasons it is being considered and what the possible side effects might be.

“We want our patients to know what to expect,” said Susan Hudson, BS, BA, CCRP, clinical trial coordinator at Sanford Bemidji. “Some trials are short in duration while some can last the duration of the patient’s life.”

“We are proud of how we are progressing with our clinical trials,” Dr. Bollinger added. “It is a pleasure when people come back to us with good outcomes. When you see someone like Steve, who is doing well and you know that you made a difference, it makes you want to come to work.”

Taking charge of his health Steve’s annual visits to the doctor were instrumental in catching his prostate cancer before it was out of control and he believes every man should follow that example.

I want everyone to know about the importance of having a PSA test.

It can save your life.

Getting answers for the unknown Clinical trials are a growing field of medicine and it is an exciting time. The genetic makeup of cancers sometimes determines why the cancer started and why it is growing, and now, with the use of trials, our team can look at the genomic reasons why cancer develops.

“That is where much of the research is going,” Susan said. “We have standard therapies but with the help of clinical trials, we have other options.”

Every patient is a potential candidate for a clinical trial at Sanford Bemidji and patients who wish to learn more about the program can contact their physician.

“

“There is a world-wide trial ongoing for prostate cancer patients like Steve,” Dr. Bollinger said. “I recommended we go with the clinical trial, and Steve agreed.”

Fortunately, he scheduled routine visits to his doctor for a physical and his prostate cancer was detected in time to respond to surgery and radiation treatment.

“The incidence of prostate cancer in Minnesota is the highest of any state,” Dr. Kosko said. “Often you don’t notice any signs of prostate cancer until they are advanced. One of the best ways to catch it early is a PSA screening and if you catch it early there is about an 80 percent survival rate.”

Steve agrees that a PSA screening is the best way to detect prostate cancer and he wants to share that message.

“You need to be there for your family,” Steve said. “I want everyone to know about the importance of having a PSA test. It can save your life.”

Early detection is the key to successfully beating prostate cancer. Among the tools in that fight is the test that measures PSA (prostate specific antigen) in the blood.

More than 90 percent of all prostate cancers, according to the American Cancer Society, are found while they are either only in the prostate or near the prostate.

The five-year survival rate for men with these kinds of prostate tumors is nearly 100 percent.

There is no sure way to prevent prostate cancer and some risk factors, such as age and family history, can’t be controlled.

However, there are ways to reduce the chance of developing prostate cancer: •E at fruits and vegetables every day •A void high-fat meats or high-fat dairy foods • Limit calcium in the diet

• Stay at a healthy weight

• Get daily physical activity

Our approach to lung cancer prevention and care Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer at Sanford Bemidji, and the primary cause of cancer deaths in the United States. While those facts are sobering, lung screenings resulting in earlier diagnoses, and improved treatment technologies are contributing to better outcomes for patients.

Our cancer registry is a specialty of the health information technology field. A cancer registrar manages cancer patient databases, recording information that may be used to help detect cancer earlier, improve treatments and increase survival rates.

If diagnosed with lung cancer, patients at Sanford Bemidji can benefit from the most advanced treatment technologies and patient support system close to home. Patient navigation is the most recent program addition; Kristin Wilcox, RN, joined the staff in June as the lung and colon cancer patient navigator.

Kristin steps in shortly after a patient’s diagnosis, mailing out an educational packet and visiting with the patient by telephone to answer questions and ease concerns.

“Patients are bombarded with so much new information and they are juggled between a lot of different areas,” Kristin said. “This is a scary time for them. They don’t always hear, or remember, what goes on in their appointments. I encourage patients to bring someone with them. If they don’t have anyone to accompany them, I offer to sit in on the consults with them.”

Kristin follows up after appointments to see if patients have any questions.

She connects patients to other support they may need such as social services and nutritional counseling. She also tracks patient charts and pathology reports throughout their treatment.

In short, Kristin does everything she possibly can to make their journey less stressful.

While Kristin’s role is to work with patients who are already diagnosed with lung cancer, she is a strong proponent of lung screenings and their effectiveness in catching lung cancer early. Sanford’s low-dose CT technology provides radiologists with higher resolution images to better view the lungs, at the same time exposing patients to minimal radiation.

The painless CT screenings reveal nodes or nodules on the lung. Most nodules are not cancer, Kristin said.

They can be caused by a variety of non-threatening conditions.

How can I avoid lung cancer?

Small changes can have big results. Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of lung cancer death.

• If you can’t quit smoking independently, seek help •A void exposure to secondhand smoke •E at a healthy diet •B e physically active for 30 minutes each day • Test

your home for radon •A void toxins at work

“If no nodes are found in your initial screening, it’s recommended that you have another screening the following year,” Kristin said. “After that, you and your provider will determine if you should continue screenings.”

Lung screenings are recommended for adults age 55 to 77 and people with a heavy smoking history, current smokers or former smokers who quit in the last 15 years. These age ranges and smoking references are set to target people at highest risk for developing lung cancer.

Anyone who is or has been a longtime smoker should talk to his/her primary care physician about the advisability of having a lung screening. Because insurance coverage varies, it’s important to check your insurance plan to see if lung screenings are covered. Your physician can refer you for a screening and will notify you of results.

Basket making has long been Eileen Spilman’s therapy, a relaxing art she enjoys and teaches others to enjoy.

Last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she discovered an accompanying benefit. Her fellow basket weavers turned out in force to support her through her ordeal.

Deborrah Frable, MD, PhD. The following day, she learned the results showed an abnormality. That same afternoon, she was scheduled for a second mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy. Results were positive for early stage breast cancer.

Patient navigator Terri Bentler, BSN, RN, OCN, CN-BN, became Eileen’s advocate, easing the way during the process.

“We are a resource for patients,” Terri said. “They may feel like the floor is falling out from underneath them and don’t even know what questions to ask.

We can explain things along the way and help them get what they need.”

Always by your side Dr. Frable met with Eileen to discuss test results and options. Together they walked down to the office of Allan Campbell, MD, a board-certified surgeon who specializes in oncology surgery. A lumpectomy was scheduled.

“When these cancers are caught early, outcomes are going to be better,” Dr. Campbell said. “Early detection also increases options for women, such as whether they have a lumpectomy or mastectomy.”

“It all went really well,” Eileen said.

“I expected the radiation to be harder than it was. The staff in the radiation department was extremely friendly and made it very easy for me.”

“Things like this can be barriers to treatment,” Terri said. “We have a lot of rural patients. They may decide against treatment because the distance is too far or they are a caregiver for a parent who can’t be left home alone. We work to help alleviate factors like that.”

The ultimate goal, of course, is a cancer-free patient. When that happens, everyone celebrates.

On Oct.12, 2015, Eileen had a mammogram that revealed exactly what she, her family, her friends and her care team at Sanford wanted to see. She is now cancer free.

Eileen’s hobby is quite visible in her home, where she proudly displays baskets she’s woven as well as those she’s collected through her travels.

Palliative care is interdisciplinary, person-and-family-centered health care for individuals and families affected by serious or life-limiting illness. The goal is to relieve pain and other symptoms and stress of the illness, thereby optimizing quality of life.

Genetics’ role in cancer As genetics becomes an increasingly important component in the fight against cancer, Sanford Health in Bemidji has a specialist on staff devoted to helping patients research and understand how their genetic makeups may impact their likelihood of developing cancer – and how best to beat it.

Jennifer Leonhard, MS, CGC, is a certified genetic counselor at Sanford Bemidji who joined the team in June 2014. In her role, she works with patients to discuss their personal and family histories and potentially examine their own genetics to search for specific genetic markers that can impact their cancer risk.

While many patients come to her after receiving a cancer diagnosis, Jennifer also routinely sees those seeking to get ahead of a potential diagnosis. For example, if a woman’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and found to have a gene mutation that increases her risk of breast and ovarian cancer, that woman’s daughter might seek out

Jennifer to find if she has that gene mutation.

“Testing is always helpful,” said Jennifer. “If we test someone with a family history and they’re positive for a specific marker, then we know there’s a genetic predisposition.

If it is negative, it’s still very informative, Jennifer added.

“We know, OK, we didn’t find that gene change but we still have that family history to work with. We can say, ‘OK, your mom had breast cancer at 45 so instead of screening at 40, you should start screening at 35.’

The objective, she explained, is to start screenings with mammograms 10 years prior to the age of onset. Those recommendations are developed not only from the genetic testing itself, but also from screenings and assessments such as the Gail Model, which can help determine an individual’s cancer risk prior to any diagnosis.

“If we identify that your likeliness of breast cancer is greater than 20 percent, instead of just offering the annual mammograms, we will also offer an annual breast MRI. So you’re actually being seen every six months instead of every year,” Jennifer said.

For those already diagnosed with cancer, a genetic screening is not initially offered to every single patient but may be recommended based on an individual’s personal and family histories. For example, genetic counseling is recommended for any cancer patient diagnosed under the age of 45, for those diagnosed with two or more cancers, or for those who have multiple family members with cancer.

Jennifer said cancer patients typically come to see her after they have been seen by other specialists.

“We try to meet with patients after they’ve seen medical oncology, and the pathology is back, partly because

the pathology of breast cancer helps determine if there’s a genetic predisposition as well,” she said.

For example, triple-negative breast cancer is more common with a gene mutation, such as BRCA. “For some, especially if they have a high-risk family history or if they’re young and their pathology is pending, they can still come see me because a lot of people are using genetic testing for medical management,” Jennifer said.

An individual, for example, may be deciding between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy when a gene mutation is identified, potentially impacting that individual’s eventual decision.

Likewise, a woman may choose to undergo a mastectomy if she is BRCApositive, even if she has not yet been diagnosed with breast cancer. Some women, Jennifer explained, do not want to go through screenings every six months constantly worrying about developing breast cancer when breast removal can reduce her cancer risk by 95 percent.

“By the time they come to see me I’m looking for patterns,” she said. “I’m looking if there’s something that would indicate an increased risk for cancer.”

As the genetic counselor here in Bemidji, Jennifer does work with medical specialties outside of cancer – such as prenatal medicine – but said the Edith Sanford Breast Center is most accustomed to working with her. As part of the cancer committee’s prevention project, Jennifer has spoken at several community events throughout the year to increase the knowledge and awareness of genetic counseling’s role in cancer prevention.

“Sanford Health is really trying to grow genetic counseling and I love that. To have a facility that nurtures it is just phenomenal,” said Jennifer.

Patient navigators serve as the main contact for patients and their families, helping navigate the complex world of cancer treatment. They coordinate appointments, communicate with the care team to keep treatments on track and refer patients to additional resources.

“I view my role as a privilege, walking with patients during a very unexpected and difficult time in their lives,” says oncology patient navigator Terri Bentler. “I do my best to offer support and hope from my experience and knowledge in oncology care.”

Patients appreciate having one person to help them deal with the many facets of treatment care. Besides not feeling well and dealing with the emotional stress, they are easily overwhelmed by all the various resources necessary for their care and treatment.

“One patient told me he had so many questions, but no idea who to call: the surgeon, the radiation oncologist or the medical oncologist,” Kristin said. “My answer was simple. Call me.

I take every question our patients have, and then get back to them with the answers.”

Formerly an oncology nurse, Kristin loves her new role because she gets to spend individualized time with her patients.

“Every experience is different for every patient,” she said. “But it’s always an emotional time. My patients are so appreciative of everything I can do to help them. My job is very rewarding.”

Life-saving screenings for our community At the Boomers and Beyond 50+ Senior Expo in August, Sanford Bemidji provided breast cancer education and prevention programming with the aim of increasing participation in mammography screenings.

Onsite scheduling for a future mammogram at the Edith Sanford Breast Center was offered to all women who stopped at the booth.

Nine women registered that day.

Women whose screenings were benign were notified by mail. One

was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mammography results led to biopsy and an early stage cancer diagnosis.

Community events such as the annual Boomers Expo are good opportunities to share important health care education with people who might not otherwise seek out that information, said Terri Bentler, Sanford oncology patient navigator.

Isn’t it interesting how the more things change, the more they stay the same?

Sanford Bemidji’s campus looks different than it did in 1898 when Benedictine nuns from Crookston leased the second floor of the Nagle store to use as a temporary hospital. Just one year later, their dream for a permanent hospital became a reality when St. Anthony’s Hospital was completed.

Over the next several years, the hospital expanded to meet the needs of a growing community. Then, disaster struck in 1929 when a fire at the hospital, due to defective wiring, destroyed the facility. Fortunately, all patients were evacuated, but they needed a place to go.

The community rallied together for a fund drive to rebuild the hospital. In December of that same year, a new hospital opened with 30-bed capacity, nine physicians and 14 employees.

Our founders’ vision for health care in our community was extraordinary and their intention to create a legacy was clear. Philanthropy made it possible then, and it is just as vital today.

Even with all of these changes throughout the years, the same caring spirit remains today.

In the pages that follow, we honor those who are committed to the health of our community. We are proud to call them our investors, partners and friends. They help us continue to transform health care in the Bemidji region for the thousands of patients and families who entrust their lives to us.

For Paula Howard, owner of Big Apple Bagels, it’s the cancer team at Sanford Bemidji.

Paula was diagnosed in December 2012, soon after moving to Bemidji from Forest Lake, Minn., a community 30 minutes outside Minneapolis.

“Coming from the Twin Cities, I didn’t know what to expect from the local care in Bemidji, but I was so impressed, right from the get go,”

she said. “I really felt like I had a team here, from every aspect.”

Today, Sanford Bemidji has nationally accredited cancer and breast cancer programs. We offer great cancer care and treatment, but they’re located in a variety of places on and off campus.

Through Care Without Limits we will build a new cancer center, creating one place for coordinated, patient-centered care. It will provide cutting-edge technologies, treatments, expert staff and survivorship support all under one roof.
