|Introduction| I am a graphic designer from the islands of Hawai’i, currently based in San Francisco. Growing up in an environment surrounded by the art and designs of my Polynesian culture has given me more attention to design, and I am passionate about pursuing this profession and skill with the advancement of modern technology. In love with design, I studied Graphic Design at Brigham Young University-Hawai’i and earned my Bachelor’s Degree in June 2016. After I graduated, I was eager for more and motivated myself to further my design career in the Graphic Design MFA program at the Academy of Art University. My passion for design has inspired me to be who I am as an individual who loves my family and culture, and has a fun personality. I see designing, not only a solution to design problems, but also an opportunity to connect with others, share positive messages, and serve others.

|Objective| Recognize a dying or discontinued brand and later modifying it with a new field of colors, typography, imagery, audience, and logo by keeping the brand core. Also, exploring various future expansions of the brand. |Approach| I chose Quiksilver, which is an outdoor apparel company that originated from Torquay, Australia. Later, it extended to the United States in 1976. The original brand centered on a youth audience because of its attributes of being adventurous and authentic in competitive outdoor sports, mainly surfing and snowboarding. The new Quiksilver brand, connects with people of various age groups who connect and grow with nature.

|Objective| Create posters to express the emotion of a particular vocabulary, color, and song through typography, color, and imagery. Collect concepts and visuals that would present the complete design of this project. |Approach| Redbone by Childish Gambino has a psychedelic funk groove beat, which lead to the concept of this song. I was inspired to create a liquid light experiment as used in psychedelic concerts with vibrant colors and trippy effect. Focus poster portrays a double definition of sharpness and blurriness. I experimented by stenciling each letter and using light to reflect the word to convey the meaning and emotion of Focus. The color pink brings a sweet and playful presentation that associates with natural and artificial sweets such as cotton candy and dragon fruit. I experimented by creating letterforms using these edible items to portray the feeling.

|Objective| Design a Samoan Language learning program system that helps Samoan American communities reconnect with their culture.
|Approach| “Poto” is the translation of smart in the Samoan language. To achieve this project’s objective, I used graphic design in different materials to help people of Samoan heritage, reconnect their culture by learning the Samoan language. To do that, I created a Samoan language app where the audience can play games and learn the language at the same time, flashcards to study by, and public posters to remind the audience of reconnecting to their culture. |Objective| Redesign an annual report for Regal Cinemas with clear and organized layouts. |Approach| The approach for this project was to simplify this publication design by creating a duo-tone of blue and red, inspired by the original 3 Dimensional glasses, one of the essential tools in a movie theater. I also used simple visuals of graphs, tables, and informational graphics to provide a balance with a large amount of text from the original report. |Objective| Create an interactive environmental game where people can socialize and be creative in providing three deliverables that provide an opportunity for people to be confident and have fun. |Approach| Connect is an environmental game that encourages people to be creative in turning normal actions into inventive dance moves by following the lyrics of a selected song from the game. There are three deliverables of varying scales, the first is an app, which provides instructions of the game. The second set of deliverables is a website, which helps people to purchase their attire as part of the game. Last, when receiving a complete package with the entire dance routine from the app, people can use the Connect Installation with speaker and stage. |Objective| Find a poorly designed website and recreate it with better visuals designs and layouts that provide a better aesthetic for the overall site. Also, provide an easier navigation for the audience to find what they are looking for. |Approach| I chose to redesign the website for La Luna Cupcakes, a local San Francisco company. It was recognized as one of the best cupcake bakeries in the city. With fantastic ratings and reviews of this company, it had a poor overall design where there wasn’t enough information, and a very few visuals and the navigation was confusing. For this project, I went for the approach of adding more content with more straightforward navigation and sophisticated images of cupcakes that are inviting and calming.

Provide visuals and graphics that pertains to the stories of the director through his or her artwork. |Approach| Jared Hess is known for his quirky and underdog-themed movies, for which I was inspired to create this film festival with fun bright colors, and rough textured handwriting typefaces. The overall look was to present a high school aesthetic with doodles and highlighter scribbles, making people feel like they were a character in one of Jared Hess’ films.

Similar to La Luna, the lacked visuals and wasn’t easy to navigate. Although supplies were updated and enough information was given, the visuals were too busy and weren’t consistent.
