In July, Disney made the bold decision to fire beloved director James Gunn when his inappropriate tweets from 2008-2011 resurfaced. Gunn, the man behind Marvel Studios hit Guardians of the Galaxy, was in the process of writing the franchise’s third installation when the announcement went public. Though Disney’s swift action was supported by many, the entertainment giant still received backlash from fans, actors, and journalists, denouncing the company’s seemingly impulsive decision.

The tweets that provoked Disney to fire Gunn were from eight to ten years ago, composed of dark and insensitive humor focusing on child pedophilia. However, the man who publicized the tweets, Mike Cernovich, was not interested in Gunn’s moral character as much as his outspoken opposition to President Trump. Known for

Disney is setting a dangerous precedent by falling victim to a senseless smear campaign. Though Gunn’s tweets are indefensible and serve as a reminder to practice basic restraint on social media, Disney should never have hired him if they weren’t prepared to defend his character. Unlike the #MeToo movement, Gunn’s crime was not assaulting an individual but making tasteless jokes on a platform that thrives on them. As many social media sites are still relatively new and only just becoming a force in mainstream society, there needs to be flexibility for people to learn the proper internet etiquette and repent from their mistakes.

With the introduction of yet another new bathroom policy, it’s no wonder students are frustrated.

The “20/20” policy only allows bathroom access after the first 20 minutes of class and before the last 20 minutes of class. Including the 5-minute transition times (in which most students don’t have time to use the restroom), there are many 45-minute periods throughout the day in which students cannot access a bathroom. The new policy raises many questions. How will students stay hydrated without being tardy to class? Is it even possible to get enough water while still following the “20/20” rule?

There are many different theories on how much water to drink per day, but one commonly accepted idea is the body weight ratio. In other words, people should drink about half an ounce of water each day for every pound they weigh.

The average weight of a teenage girl is 120 pounds, and for a teen-

age boy it is 150. This means that on average, girls should be drinking a little under two liters of water a day and boys a little over two liters. For reference, a normal-size CamelBak contains three-fourths of a liter.

Of course, not all of this water should be consumed during the school day. To simplify, students should be drinking one full water bottle during the school day and one after school to maintain healthy hydration. Using the idea that a bathroom break will be needed about an hour after drinking water, it is possible to formulate a schedule of when to hydrate each day.

For first and second period, this schedule is the same for all lunches.

Students should stop drinking water at 6:25 every morning and start again at 6:45 to avoid the first bathroomfree 20 minutes. Students should avoid beverages between 7:30 and 8:15, and should stop again at 9:35.

It’s no secret that school can be stressful, especially throughout the last few decades. According to TIME Magazine, “Anxiety and depression in high school kids have been on the rise since 2012 after several years of stability. It’s a phenomenon that cuts across all demographics.” Despite the rise in these mental illnesses, students are still forced to ignore academic, extracurricular, and social pressures and continue trudging through piles of schoolwork — but what most people don’t know is that untreated anxiety and depression can cause permanent brain damage.

A study by the Washington University medical school shows that untreated depression can shrink the hippocampus, a part of the brain best known for its connection to memory. Studies conducted by the Baycrest Centre in Canada, which focuses on health in aging adults, shows that long-term stress can also harm the hippocampus, as well as the prefrontal cortex, where personality is located. According to Baycrest’s Dr. Linda Mah, this means sufferers of chronic anxiety have a higher risk of depression and dementia later in life.

A study published in 2000 by the American Psychological Association revealed that the average school-aged child in the 1980s experienced higher anxiety levels than child psychiatric patients in the 1950s. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS), more than 3 million teenagers between 12 and 17 experienced at least one

major depressive episode in 2015.

In 2016, roughly thirty percent of girls and twenty percent of boys had struggled with an anxiety disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Unfortunately, these numbers are only rising and little is being done to combat the problem. The HSS reports that while one in five teenagers has had a serious anxiety or depressive disorder in his or her life, “less than half of adolescents with psychiatric disorders received any kind of treatment in the last year.”

Overwhelming academic pressure has become increasingly normalized over the years, especially for college-bound students. Fear of punishment and missing classwork can deter students from taking much needed “mental health days” off of school.

Sanderson Senior Adrielle Benner feels that while schools have improved in their treatment of mental health, many teachers still don’t understand the severity of depression and anxiety. “It makes it hard to meet deadlines or do well on tests,” Benner stated. “If I didn’t do my homework because I was having a depressive episode, it would be seen as an excuse and not a legitimate concern.” Not only does her GPA suffer, she must push herself beyond her limits to stay ahead in school.

If it is truly impossible to lower the rising expectations for high schoolers, it is absolutely imperative that more mental health resources be available to students. Flexible coursework and more counseling opportunities need to be available to students.

Educators across the country have been engaged in a debate concerning the amount of sleep that students receive before school. Teenagers have been the main focus as they are constantly growing and changing. Studies from The National Sleep Foundation state that sleep is vital to our well-being and is “food to the brain.” Many important body functions such as brain activity and cell regeneration occur during sleep. Skipping sleep can be harmful and create risks. For example, drowsiness while driving could cause a fatal accident. Consequences of not getting enough sleep or having sleep difficulties can limit ability of learning, concentrating, listening, and solving problems.

A school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School this past February left seventeen dead, sparking a nationwide movement against gun violence in the US. Leading the charge in this movement have been students from across the country.

One student that has been an outspoken leader of the movement in the local community is Sanderson’s Greear Webb.

On March 14, Webb helped organize a school-wide walkout at Sanderson to recognize those who lost their lives in the Stoneman Douglas shooting.

Over 700 students attended the walkout, and Webb delivered a speech calling for action from politicians on gun control and school safety.

After the walkout, Webb helped organize a town hall on school safety that took place at Sanderson on May 29. The town

When Sanderson opened in 1968, Motown, Rock ‘N Roll, and British songs were topping the charts.

The most popular artists were in bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones had a huge impact on the future of music and their style is still echoed in songs today.

There was more variety in music than ever before in the 1970s.

With dozens of different genres for listeners to choose from. Some of the best rock and roll songs ever were recorded in the 70s—from David Bowie to Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd. Songs like “Dancing Queen” were popular at the time and are still popular today.

The 1980s saw a rise of hip-hop, pop, and country music. Michael Jackson was just growing in popularity, but his journey to fame didn’t stop there. Songs like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” topped the charts in the U.S. On the country side, female singers like Dolly Parton were emerging. Her songs like “9 to 5” and “Jolene” were popular among mainstream listeners as well as country fans.

most popular party songs of all time, sparked the dance that spread across the nation. The song has been played at nearly every Sanderson dance since it first gained popularity. Even today, the beat still brings people to their feet.

R&B and hip-hop accounted for almost every song on the Billboard Top 20, in the 2000s. Many songs from the 2000s like “Low” by FloRida and “Yea” by Usher are still enjoyed by students at Sanderson dances. More rappers began to appear on the charts like Kanye West, Nelly, and OutKast.

The most popular music today is usually from rap and pop genres.

Songs usually only stay popular for a few days before they are forgotten and a new song is in its place at the top of the charts.

Sanderson teacher, Kimberly Williams shared, “My favorite era of music is definitely the 90s and early 2000s. It was great hip hop and I loved the R&B.” She later stated “My favorite artists were Jay-Z and Lauryn Hill.”

Everyone has their own specific music preferences. Today, there are so many different genres of music that it can be hard to call just one the best. As long as people keep listening to music, it will continue evolving and changing without end.

50th Anniversary Valedictorians coming to a halt

Sanderson High School is celebrating its 50 year anniversary, but one thing is lacking that has been present for the previous years—a class valedictorian. Since this controversial decision was made in 2016 by Wake County, it has both negatively and positively affected the students of Sanderson. Nonetheless, each former recipient from 1968 to 2018 deserves recognition for their tireless work in order to receive the title of valedictorian.

The valedictorian of a class is the student with the best academic record who will typically deliver a valedictory speech at the commencement ceremony. In 2016, the Wake County school board voted to stop naming valedictorians due to the unhealthy competition that the title creates. When asked about the decision, Wake County school board Chairman Tom Benton stated, “We have heard from many, many schools that the competition has become very unhealthy.”

He continued, “Their choice of courses was being guided by their GPA and not their future education plans.”

Others think this decision was a bad idea on Wake County’s

part. These people believe current students should have the same opportunities former students had.

Emma Goodwin, valedictorian of Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy’s 2018 class, commented on the matter saying, “Not giving other students that opportunity is going to be sad for them because it is something that builds a competition and it is such a long standing tradition.”

Teachers across the country weighed in on the decision. Sanderson teacher Ashley Taylor stated, “I see what they’re trying to do, because it singles people out, but I think that it’s okay to be singled out sometimes, especially if you have had that much academic achievement.”

Wake County would like to start implementing the Latin honors system to recognize the class of 2019 graduates’ GPAs. Seniors with a weighted grade-point average of 4.25 or higher will graduate summa cum laude. Seniors with a weighted GPA of 4.0 to 4.249 will finish magna cum laude. Finally, seniors with a GPA of 3.75 to 3.99 will graduate cum laude.

Sanderson’s tradition of valedictorian may be coming to an end, but there is still much to look forward to for the many years to come.

It’s safe to say that high school fashion has changed just as much as high school itself through the years. When Sanderson opened its doors fifty years ago, students did not resemble the high school students walking down the hallways today. From shoulder pads to letterman sweaters, there are just certain clothing pieces that would look more like Halloween costumes if they were seen in schools today.

In 1968, the “mod” look was on the rise. “Mod” style included colorful, trendy clothing pieces such as bold colors, mini-skirts, thick black eyeliner, and big hair were some of the trends. By the 1970s, disco was the new theme. For girls, feathered hair and halter tops were often paired with the hippie form of jeans—bell bottoms. For boys, tight shirts and long locks were all the rage.

Everyone knows the 1980s for the neon colors and acid wash jeans, but what many do not know is why these were so popular. Stars like Madonna were admired and teens were eager to dress like their idols.

In the 1990s, there were two very unique but dominant fashion trends. On one side, the unisex “grunge” was embraced with oversized flannels and combat boots. On the other side, “preppy” clothes were selling out in stores across the nation.

The new millennium brought Uggs and two piece sweatsuits, often with the phrase “sweetie” across the bottom. Meanwhile, many boys decided to try out the “goth” look which included piercings, skinny jeans, dyed black hair, and Converse shoes.

through the hallways at Sanderson today, students are rocking the “hipster” style—borrowing trends from the past as well as setting a few of their own. Social media makes staying on top of the new clothing trends a whole different game. As Heidi Klum always says, “One day you’re in, but the next day, you’re out.” It may be stressful for some who are simply trying to wear clothes that are acceptable in the hallways today, but for others it is an opportunity to be show creativity. After all, you can tell a lot from a person just from their clothing choices.

Sanderson sophomore, Rachel Webster explained, “My favorite style comes from the 1990s when fashion was simple like jeans and a shirt, not showy or flashy like today.” She also stated her favorite trends from the past were highwaisted jeans and colorful, patterned sweaters.

Everyone has their own opinion about whether fashion has improved through the years or has gotten worse. Either way, there is no denying that trends are still changing and won’t ever stop.

Fifteen minutes of fame is hard enough to accomplish, but how about fifty years? When Sanderson opened in 1968, teens plastered their rooms with posters of singers, actors, and athletes.

Some of the stars of the past are still popular today. Being a popular celebrity for over fifty years requires talent, presence, and charisma that ages gracefully with the times.

For the past fifty years, Sanderson students and staff have been fascinated with these stars. Three years before Sanderson opened, music duo Sonny & Cher sold 40 million records worldwide.

They skyrocketed in popularity beginning in the sixties, but while Sonny died in 1988, Cher remained a top chart artist. Her most recent work was in Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again! where she demonstrates her lasting star power.

Today she is still seen as one of the royals of music, inspiring artists such as Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Wonder, a fifties child prodigy was signed to Motown record label at age eleven. He has not made or been featured on a record since 2013, but in 2018, we still listen to “Superstitious,” and “Isn’t She Lovely.”

Another successful female singer-songwriter, Carole King, began a career with her first husband, Gerry Goffin, in the early 1960s. However, it was not until the seventies that King had success as an independent artist.

She has recently released an autobiography, A Natural Woman: A Memoir, and performs mainly in the U.S and Britain.

The Beatles dominated music in the 1960s-1970s. Currently, the only living member is Paul McCartney, who still carries on his solo career.

The Golden Girls, The Princess Diaries, and The Sound of Music are still classic films for all ages. In August, a documentary called Betty White: First Lady of Television, was released about White and Julie Andrews voiced Marlena Gru in Despicable Me 3.

These eight people have remained famous because they were so loved during their time.

Most of our parents and even grandparents have made a point to incorporate their works into our lives growing up. The longevity of these stars’ careers makes us wonder where Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, and LeBron James will be in fifty years. Maybe they will be playing at the Sanderson 100th anniversary celebration.

Athlete Of the Month

Runner from Syria reaches varsity cross country team Nader Alshikh and his family moved from Syria almost two years ago. He moved to America to learn more English and start a new adventure. Alshikh is in his sophomore year here at Sanderson High school.

In his freshman year, Alshikh joined the school track team.

After the track season, he started training for the 2018 cross country season in the summer.

Alshikh trained hard and started running with the top runners on the team. His favorite event is the 5K and hopes to reach a personal record of 16:50 in the future.

“Cross country has allowed me to make more friends and have more energy,” stated Alshikh.

difficult about running is having to run in the sun. A running rookie, Alshikh has become a high-level runner through races against schools across the county, and sometimes even the state or nation.

Alshikh has recently travelled to McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in the Providence Invitational cross country meet.

Nader ran the 5K and finished with a personal record of 17:31.

During the summer, Alshikh rode his bike three miles to and from practice each day and also ran a race after he bumped his head, resulting in a headache. Alshikh has dedication to his running and Sanderson hopes to see Alshikh improve and represent the school in future events.

Side-Out Foundation, an organization dedicated to breast cancer research. The event is always highly anticipated and draws a large crowd, most of which can be seen in the color pink. “It’s a fun game,” said team captain Chloe Smith. “It’s nice to see so many

people come out and support the team, and we end up raising a lot of money for a good cause.”

Smith, a junior who is a third year varsity player, shed some light as to what she likes most about playing volleyball. “I like the rush you get while playing and making good relationships with your teammates,” she said.

The Dig Pink game is a showcase of a sport that is characterized by good spirit and enthusiasm, and a high level of positivity and sportsmanship are on display throughout the game.

Players are constantly smiling, cheering each other on, and giving each other high fives. No matter the situation of the game, everyone is having a good time.

“It’s important to stay positive because it helps the energy of the game,” said Smith. “If you get down on yourself, it’s easier to make mistakes, and one mistake can lead to many more. If you mess up, you just need to let it go. Volleyball is 90% mental and 10% physical.”

After the Dig Pink game, the Spartans have one more game on October 11 as they visit Cardinal Gibbons. Then they will hopefully make an appearance in the state playoffs and go on a playoff run.
