SALUTO DEL CONSIGLIERE REGIONALE DEL FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA: EDY MORANDINI

GREETINGS FROM THE REGIONAL COUNSIL OF FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA: EDY MORANDINI

I am particularly honored to be invited to contribute, with a welcome speech, to the celebratory catalog of the 23rd edition of the International Symposium of Sculpture on Stones of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a prestigious event for our community, the result of tireless activity of the Cultural Circle Il Faro and its President, Roberto Cossettini.

The Municipality of Reana del Rojale has been enriched with a real sculpture park where, over the years, over 200 artists have met and created works of art, thanks to the Symposium, which is a member of the International Sculpture Symposium Alliance - ISSA, an association of Sculpture Symposiums from all over the world. The sculptures created during this edition will be on display for a few months, for the benefit of the public, before being permanently installed in various places in the Region.

Seeing the artists at work during the days of the Symposium is a unique emotion: the amount of beauty and harmony that they manage to reveal from cold blocks of stone is incredible. This year's edition managed to maintain the prestigious level of the event, bringing to Vergnacco from 4 to 20 September, eight qualified artists, creators of as many particular works, which provoke vibrations that only art can provoke. It is also thanks to this 23rd edition, organized with the fundamental support of the FVG Region, that the Municipality of Reana del Rojale can boast its presence on the world map of events dedicated to the promotion of sculptural art.

SALUTO DEL SINDACO DEL COMUNE DI REANA DEL ROJALE: EMILIANO CANCIANI

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF REANA DEL ROJALE: EMILIANO CANCIANI

The ability to carry out one's projects, even in the most difficult moments, when the silence of surrender seems normal, is not such a common quality. The Cultural Circle "il Faro" and its President Roberto Cossettini have shown that the organization of an event such as the International Symposium of Sculpture on Stones of Friuli Venezia Giulia, this year in particular, is never improvised but is the result of 'constant commitment and determination of people aware of the importance that the event has for our territory. Not only a time of knowledge and sharing, but also of culture.

Being able to host eight international sculptors in a strange year like 2020, where everything seems difficult and impossible, despite the international travel ban, has been a great success. Not only does to my admiration to them for having found the courage to participate in the festival in a such a difficult period, I also thank them for the artworks created at the Sculpture Park.

During this edition I visited the Park in Vergnacco several times and I could see that the decision to move the event, from the traditional month of June to September, because of the pandemic, was the right one, with sunny and cool days. It was nice to be able to enjoy time with the sculptors and with many friends, in the open air, sharing the joy of a regained normality, after the isolation of the spring months.

We now have eight new works that enrich the cultural and artistic heritage of Rojale and the entire region. I am sure that the Municipal Administration will continue to support this initiative of great artistic value. My personal thanks, my sincere respect, goes, besides the sculptors, also to the many precious collaborators of Il Faro, who, for the last 23 years, have made it possible for such an important event to give prestige to our Municipality. and to the FVG Region with their passion and a lot of commitment. With this, enriching our region with events, opportunities for growth for our Community. This great work proves that will and perseverance always leave a mark that is difficult to erase. To all our guest sculptors, I wish great success, with the hope that they will remember with pleasure their experience in Rojale, our small and at the same time "great" Territory.

SALUTO DEL VICE SINDACO DEL COMUNE DI REANA DEL ROJALE: ANNA ZOSSI

GREETINGS FROM THE VICE MAYOR OF REANA DEL ROJALE: ANNA ZOSSI

2020 was a year that required great changes from everybody worldwide. The complexity of dealing with a new life with limitations and new habits has opened the way to alternative solutions.

All of us have become more attentive and scrupulous in protecting what we hold dear this time of uncertainties.

Roberto Cossettini and his collaborators of the Cultural Circle "Il Faro" were able to rediscover the founding values of their initiative, presenting the 23rd International Symposium of Sculpture on Stone of FVG with excellent solutions for participation, use and sharing of the works, which has encouraged the public exposure and visits. Thanks to new technologies they have been able to share crucial moments of the two weeks of stone sculpting, from their initial solid volumes to their conceptual and emotional presence, in a constant dialogue with the observer, present or from a distance.

The artists worked in total safety and in compliance with all current regulations, they experienced a special symposium where there was no lack of a sense of community, of beauty of the region and its rich food and wine culture. But there were also moments of silence and reflection because the current situation also requires this: whispered and imagined words instead of the endless fast pace of time. The emergency made it possible to enhance the real artistic value of the sculpture which also requires listening and meditation.

The finished art works brought out particular co-existences and experiences: it is not easy to find an all-encompassing commentary on the Symposium, but this year, from my personal visits, the term "ENTHUSIASM" emerged.

Enthusiasm can be found in the desire to have the Symposium, in the determination to involve international artists, in the management of the evenings, in the reception of individual visitors, groups or associations... and again in the collaborations with Companies, Partners and Volunteers who have supported the Circolo again this year. In the passion expressed by the photographers who immortalized the various phases of the event, in the words with which Sergio Mazzola was remembered, whose family continues to honor the artists with his manual craftsmanship and the Symposium itself, in the flags at the end of the event with which the Rojale greeted the passage of the Giro d'Italia. The Circolo il Faro is honored and respected by the whole region, they deserve praise for the joy and passion that were highlighted also this time.

May this thoughtful and finalized enthusiasm be a wish for a lasting and long-lasting continuation of the Symposium in the Sculpture Park of Vergnacco, which the local parish allows the use of as their contribution and which this year, together with other associations operating in the village, has enlivened the streets and squares of the town.

Grazie Roberto, grazie Simposio, grazie Vergnacco, grazie Rojale.

Thank you Roberto, thank you Symposium, thank you Vergnacco, thank you Rojale.

SALUTO DEL PRESIDENTE DEL CIRCOLO CULTURALE “IL FARO”: ROBERTO COSSETTINI

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE CULTURAL ASSOCIATION “IL FARO”: ROBERTO COSSETTINI

It will not be easy to forget the experience of this 23rd international sculpture symposium which, with the arrival in February of the Covid-19 pandemic, was affected in an extraordinary way by an infinite series of setbacks.

Setbacks that first forced us to suspend the artistic event which, as usual, had always taken place in June. Then to rework everything starting from the list of artists and the resizing of social and entertainment evenings, which are designed and organized to offer the artists an insight into the natural and entrepreneurial peculiarities of our beautiful Friuli. However, the determination of yours faithfully, of some public, entrepreneurial and historical collaborators, allowed us to redesign and re-propose the artistic event with renewed and strong motivations, in the splendid setting of a September generous of warm and sunny days. It was not easy and the many limitations imposed by the pandemic made our work particularly complicated but, in the end, it remains an experience not to be missed and which, like the previous ones... even more than the previous ones, gave us the satisfactions on a social and artistic level which will never be forgotten. For all this a big thank you to the team of artists who accepted our invitation and who, for two weeks, have dusted our small community with positive creative energy. They leave us with lovely memories and splendid art works, to testify over time that, with stubbornness and good will, life continues and becomes beautiful even in the face of sudden and unexpected disasters. Therefore and from the bottom of my heart, an infinite thank you to all those who contributed to the success of this splendid event.

1 2

I was, I am, I will be. I am here, I follow my path, with intact elegance and determined sweetness. My smile is clear like the pale Aurisina stone, which wise and strong hands have molded into well-rounded arms, in the delicate circle of life, in the fragrant bosom and in the harmonious curve of the shoulders, in the sinuous wave of the hair. And in my confident walk, wrapped in a sumptuous robe, I am here, the look is open and so is the smile. Born from the clear idea of the mind, extracted from the shell that encased me from the strength of amorous intuition. I was, I am, I will be the serenity of beauty, the water that quenches thirst, the bread that smells, and breath of the earth and heaven, source of life.

The female figure has always been at the center of the sculptural research of Van Hoang Huynh, an artist originally from Laos who has lived and worked in Italy for over four decades. During his second participation in the Symposium in Vergnacco-Reana del Rojale , he introduces a work that is the clear continuation of his research. A female figure, with soft and sinuous lines, which in the lateral view reveals the perfect arch of a body in the midst of youthful beauty and which seems to emerge from a square base. The hands are intertwined behind the back, the shoulders straight, the head slightly tilted upwards and the gaze turned to the vastness of the sky. An unveiled figure that reveals its essence: that of a life-generating Earth goddess who, thanks to the bunch of grapes, artfully placed at the height of the hips, moves the concept more closely to the earth and the territory. A reference to the source of life but also - as the artist points out - a tribute to Friuli, a land of grapes and prestigious wines , which made the region famous worldwide. The Grigio Carnico stone, with its splendid veins, beautifully highlighted by Van Hoang's work, gives the work a sort of "dress" that enhances the beauty of the shapes and the lightness of the volumes.

MALAGA, SPAGNA

RHEA MARMENTINI

Titolo dell'opera: UOVO ALATO / Work title: WINGED EGG Materiale: Scultura in Pietra d’Aurisina (Cava Romana – Duino/Aurisina, TS) Di origine cilena-ungherese, trascorre l'infanzia a Malaga e inizia i suoi studi d'arte a Pécs (Ungheria). After winning numerous prizes in Hungary and France, she goes to Paris at the age of 17 and meets the well-known sculptor Pierre Székely, who will call her his spiritual heir. Rhea joined the "art cloche" movement in the late 90s and her first workshop was in "Pole-Pi". She then started her Land-Art project in Gilet, near Valencia. During ten years she transformed the old landscape of an abandoned quarry into a habitable sculpture called "El Dragón de la Calderona": house, studio, exhibition space, place for research. After a stint in New York, she has now returned to Malaga, where she continues her sculptural work and participates in various international sculpture symposia around the world.

1 2

It is a powerful but not heavy looking work, which combines forms derived from the natural and animal world by Rhea Marmentini, a young Spanish sculptor with an intense artistic training matured between her country, Paris and New York. “The winged egg” obtained from a massive block of Aurisina marble, worked with great skill and precision by Rhea, combines two concepts that have always fascinated man: birth and flight. Birth is represented by the egg, a perfectly smooth and round surface, a symbol of life and regeneration. Attached are gigantic wings, which we imagine ready to stretch out to take flight. Flight that we humans, unfortunately, have tried to emulate with often clumsy and disastrous results. The flight that for the young artist embodies the desire to break away from a certain condition to embrace another dimension, perhaps lighter, marked by hope and the desire for change. An art work that certainly comes from the reflection of a moment characterized by uncertainties, unknowns and fears whic we will be able to overcome with the strength of hope and the desire for renewal.

Quanto costa la felicità? Qui è l’altare sul quale sacrificare. Cosa sei disposto a fare per ottenerla? Cosa dai in cambio? 1 2

What is the price of happiness? Here is the altar on which to sacrifice. What are you willing to do to get it? What do you give in return? Don't be scared, you are not asked for great sacrifices. We're at the market, what the heck! At the market where people buy and sell every day. This is my bench, you see: smooth clean, well polished. Just watch out for the edges: they are well sharpened. You won't believe it, but happiness is cheap today. One euro is enough, a little money is enough. You are not asked to commit intelligence, strength, your whole life, in the pursuit of happiness. Don't be afraid, you can have it right away. Just insert the coin into the appropriate slot. Listen to the music from Argentina, the tinkling of euros that meet and recognize each other. What do you say? The music finishes soon! What remains is this beautiful slab, this Grigio Carnico with beautiful markings, ready to receive another coin and another, and another, and another... This is the game: this is the market, this is the table - gravestone for those who arrive at their bench, cold and smooth, incredible like the game of three cards.

In a world with increasing technology, increasingly digital and where spirituality was canceled by having forgotten or rather trying to kill Nature, in a search for short-term profit, a growing group of artists is trying to rediscover their social role to return to harmony with the natural components that still surround us. So does Beatrice in this symposium. She reinvents herself in the flow of this tradition, dedicating herself to carving an oak leaf, similar to those that have shaded her in these two sunny weeks. She sculpts stone or marble leaves and does it well. She carefully observes the leaves, the trunks, the density of the forest and she includes part of the magic inherent in what she has seen and explored with an artist's eye. It is on the trail of this new group of artists that Beatrice made her first major public work in England: The Arborealists. Her leaf here in the Park is the happy result of the effort made to organize this 23rd Sculpture Symposium in Vergnacco.

The sculpture by the Portuguese sculptor Mario Lopes is certainly the most eye-catching. Most of all for having been made in Rosso Radica marble with the veins of the colors of the earth: red, burnt, brown, black. 1 2

In an abstract style, the work represents the form of a cube, one of the 5 Platonic volumes, in which the crests lengthen with a sort of expansion, an extension of the sides that gives the work movement and lightness. A movement that captures our attention and invites us to a circular view of the work and which, like a melody, continues to repeat itself indefinitely. A work, which occupies the space confidently, perfectly executed with deliberately shiny surfaces capable of capturing and reflecting light, for an enhancement of the form and colors of the material.

1 2

Essential structure, pure symbol-thought that takes on the character of the stone, the polished flowering of the Fior di Pesco Carnico, a subtle reminder of the delicate and strong beauty of the flora of the High Andean, the very breath of the earth that reaches towards the sky. This is the mountain and this is the valley joined perfectly, balanced by convex volumes, on ancestral rhythms. And this is the river, a sinuous snake that flows from above refreshing the shadows of the pink stone. On the other side is the city, traced with a steady movement, a sacred symbol, high up on the mountain, to catch all the sunlight that gives life. And, if you look at them sideways, the mountain and the valley are the pulsating masses of strength of the puma and the city is a powerful sign of his face and of the mystery of wisdom that inhabits the divine.

1 2

A synthesis of the relationship between nature and man, a greedy builder and despot of shared spaces, Silvia's work demonstrates how it is nature that prevails and puts us in a precarious condition. To be able to guarantee a future for humanity, it is essential to recover the right relationship with nature. Without it we could not survive, while the opposite is not true. Her powerful and vigorous work, just like she is, even in a small and fragile aspect, conveys perfectly the message which she sends us. The finished and the unfinished of her sculpture echo and and reference to Michelangelo, which provoke our full admiration and make even the unexpressed profound. Silvia created an excellent, great artwork and this with a titanic tenacity to achieve it in the short time of the symposium.
