PHILIP BALDWIN & MONICA GUGGISBERG NEW WORK from Wales 2021 SEPTEMBER 25, 2021 - NOVEMBER 6, 2021

SANDRA AINSLEY GALLERY

Artist Statement We, Philip Baldwin (1947) and Monica Guggisberg (1955), have been a collaborative team for forty years. We share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass. Over time our work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cold -working « battuto » combined with the Swedish overlay process for layering colors. Our work in these techniques has been pioneering in the field. Color, light, texture, pattern, and shape together allow us to reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to the simplest of forms and clear lines. Although we have become more sculptural in our focus over the years, we seek to imbue everything we do with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, while striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. We want to honour eternal symbols of human culture and history, while embracing contemporary evolution in form and meaning. In recent years our large installations and major exhibitions increasingly reflect our concerns for the world we have created and share with all.

Exhibition Statement Working on our rural farm in Wales, in isolation, we have been lucky to continue making our glass in strange times. This is our fifth Exhibition with Sandra Ainsley across two decades. It is an honor to work with Sandra and Daniel and to be able to present this new collection. The comets, meteors, and miniature cabinets are being seen for the very first time here, inspired by our exhibition "Walking in the Void" from the Ebeltoft Museum in Denmark (2020-2021). The incalmo-batutto families are also made expressly for this show, expanding on the Novae Species series begun two years ago. Taken together, the exhibition is a reflection on humanity and our place in the larger universe.

“There’s no distinction really between an idea and its manner of expression. The two are joined at the hip. It's a marriage contract, for better or worse. Music is made from an instrument, even as the idea flows from the human mind. The quality of the instrument counts, as Stradivarius knew. And while Mozart's notes are the same in 1775 as in 2010, the sound won’t be, and its ability to transform and move depends both on individual interpretation and virtuosity of manipulation.”

“We came to Italian cutting techniques because we felt we had discovered a new way to expand dramatically on what we were already doing - using sandblasting as a way to cut through layers of color to create new and originally inspired patterns and ideas.”

“Grain, seeds, wine, oil, gold, silver, artefacts, all the ballast of our millennia-old civilizations are transported down through the ages, and with them the stories themselves, the wandering of peoples all across this magnificent planetary landscape. People just like us. Seeking, questing, looking for new horizons, and carrying their culture, their history and stories on their backs, in carts, and in boats. It’s our story. It’s humankind’s story.”

Out of the Blue 47.25H x 47.25W x 8D"

“Our new work is both culturally and personally inclined. An autobiographical touch in a civilizational reflection. Wherever man goes he builds, laying down cultural lines which gradually transform into relics and artefacts over time’s inevitable march. Urban landscapes and complex designs grow and expand, deteriorate and decay. And on again we move, taking the memories of our exploits with us to use in the next story.”

PHILIP BALDWIN & MONICA GUGGISBERG Over time our work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cutting techniques “battuto” combined with Swedish overlay. In these techniques we have been pioneering and unique in the field. Color, light, texture, pattern, and shape together allow us to reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to the simplest of forms and clear lines. Although our work has become more sculptural over the years, we seek to imbue everything we do with the deepest connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and seek the highest level of craftsmanship in all our works. We try to honour eternal symbols of human culture and history, while embracing contemporary evolution in form and meaning. We have always been migratory creatures and in the recent years some of the large installations are representing our deep concerns for the world we have created and share with all.
