In celebration of the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, Violent Femmes will be playing the album in its entirety with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. The album would later prove to embody some of the most powerful anthems of a disenchanted youth that the world has ever known. Today, it stands as a pillar of an American underground movement, and one of the best early examples of alternative rock.

A San Diego favorite hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most admired pianists of his generation,” Inon Barnatan brings us Brahms’ brilliant blockbuster, the Piano Concerto No. 2. Music Director Rafael Payare and the Orchestra deliver an exciting world premiere by the much-in-demand Iranian-American composer Gity Razaz. The evening closes with Dvořák’s tender and intensely expressive Symphony No. 7, with its warm melodies inspired by the Bohemian spirit.

Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. Antonio Estévez’s best-known music is the 1954 Cantata Criolla, a lively work based on the Venezuelan mythic poem by Alberto Arvelo Torrealba about a singing contest between Florentino and the Devil. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols.

The Music Legacy Tour 2023 will showcase iconic #1 chart toppers featuring hit-after-hit from Diana Ross’ solo career catalog and as the lead singer of The Supremes. Captivating fans with her soulful, heart-felt vocals and magnetic stage presence, Diana Ross owns the room and touches her audiences. They can expect to be captivated by timeless hits such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Upside Down,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Reach Out and Touch,” “Endless Love,” and many more.

AN EVENING WITH JOHN LEGEND | FRI, JUNE 16

This special solo performance will feature songs and stories with 12-time Grammy® winner John Legend. Experience intimate reimaginings of his greatest hits (“All of Me,” “Ordinary People,” “Tonight”), unexpected stories from Legend’s life and career, and selections from his most recent release LEGEND (“Nervous,” “Wonder Woman”).

EARTH, WIND & FIRE | SUN, JUNE 18

GRAMMY® Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Earth, Wind & Fire bring their legendary music and stage performance to San Diego’s The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. Performing greatest hits from their catalog of more than 23 albums, Earth, Wind & Fire blends funk, jazz, pop, soul and R&B into a musical genre entirely their own. Earth, Wind & Fire’s catalog of hits has become the soundtrack to many lives; now, then and forever.

AN EVENING WITH CAKE | TUE, JUNE 20

The Sacramento, CA-based band CAKE continues to maintain a wealth of originality. Originally formed as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nationstate unto themselves, with no evident peers in sound or perspective. The band is currently at work on their ninth album due for release during 2023.

Trumpeter Pacho Flores joins Rafael and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra to open the summer 2023 season with a night of dancing and iconic melodies. Flores will perform the West Coast Premiere of Roberto Sierra’s Salseando. Written for him in 2020, the concerto blends jazz improvisation with salsa rhythms and melodies. The concert opens with Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and features Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.

THE BEACH BOYS | SAT, JULY 1

As The Beach Boys mark more than a half century of making music, the group continues to ride the crest of a wave unequalled in America’s musical history. The Beach Boys—who have become synonymous with the California lifestyle and an American icon, are bringing their shows to fans around the world. Since the band’s cofounder, lead-singer and chief lyricist Mike Love penned the lyrics to The Beach Boys’ first hit, “Surfin’” (1961), dozens of the bands chart toppers have become eternal anthems of American youth: “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Kokomo.”

This concert will not feature Brian Wilson, Al Jardine or David Marks.

Gracing The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park stage for the first time, 90’s hip-hop sensation C&C Music Factory are known for their top hits “Gonna Make you Sweat”, “Here We Go Let’s Rock & Roll”, and “Things That Make You Go Hmmm...”. Getting things started will be DJ Prince Hakim, who brought the audience to its feet at The Rady Shell in 2022. Influenced by the sound of the ‘80s and today, Prince Hakim has traveled from New York to Tokyo sharing his passion and spreading his message to “Celebrate Life.”

Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues.

JETHRO TULL: THE SEVEN DECADES | TUE, SEPTEMBER 26

Led by Ian Anderson, the concert will feature a rich collection of the best-known Jethro Tull repertoire from 1968 to date. Fans will recognize the key songs from various albums—songs which put Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson on the map during these seven decades.
