BY GARY WARTH The deadly hepatitis A outbreak has put San Diego’s difficulty in dealing with its growing homeless population in the national spotlight.

Other cities, including the big one just up the coast, have more homeless and fewer shelter beds.

They have also seen a variety of diseases spread among people living on the street — though nothing compared with the local hepatitis scourge.

Different cities have taken different approaches to the problem, with some sanctioning homeless encampments and others committing millions and even billions of dollars to create housing.

BY ROB NIKOLEWSKI A day after news that San Diego’s deadly hepatitis A outbreak may have infiltrated the food service industry, more than 200 people lined up for vaccinations, restaurants reinforced their health safety measures and the city opened a new set of portable public restrooms downtown in an effort to gain some control over the disease’s spread.

“All eyes are on San Diego,” Steve Zolezzi, president of the Food & Beverage Association of San Diego, said of the outbreak, one of the nation’s largest in decades, prompting county officials to declare a local public health emergency earlier this month.

Miguel Valle, a 65-year-old resident of East San Diego, was one of dozens who lined up early to get a free vaccine at the county’s North Central Public

Health Center Saturday, many of them fearful they may have been exposed at a Pacific Beach restaurant.

“I’ve got things to do this morning, but I wanted to get this taken care of, get some peace of mind,” said Valle.

On Friday, San Diego County health officials advised the public that anyone who ate or drank at the oceanfront World Famous restaurant on seven specific dates and times may have been exposed to a person with the hepatitis A virus.

Valle and nine of his friends ate appetizers at the restaurant on Aug. 28, one of the dates on the list.

“I’m a little angry because I have to go through this, but I’m not faulting the restaurant,” said Valle. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Keith Knight, 52, of Pacific Beach agreed: “It’s easier to be vaccinated than to be treated.”

By the time the health center closed at 2 p.m., 225 people had received inoculations.

“We’re in the midst of an outbreak, and anybody who comes here who wants to get the shot, even if they didn’t eat at the restaurant, we’re going ahead and giving them the shot,” said Dr. Eric McDonald, director of the county’s Epidemiology and Immunization Services Branch.

Erik Berkley, general manager at World Famous, said Saturday it has not been confirmed if the person connected to the restaurant does in fact have hepatitis A. He would not say if the person is an employee, “because I want to protect that person as much as I can.”

“What we do know is, the individual in question, that person’s spouse was confirmed to have the virus,” Berkley said.

Safari Park’s daring effort to save endangered bat

BY JOHN WILKENS Early one Wednesday morning in January, in an exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a fruit bat named Patty went into labor.

This should have been good news. Patty belongs to a colony of critically endangered Rodrigues bats, a species that almost went extinct in the 1970s. The bats exist in the wild in only one place — a small island in the Western Indian Ocean — and the colonies at the Safari Park and more than a dozen other zoos around the world form a kind of Noah’s Ark for the future.

The California Legislature on Saturday passed a “sanctuary state” bill to protect immigrants without legal residency in the U.S., part of a broader push

by Democrats to counter expanded deportation orders under the Trump administration.

The legislation by state Senate PresidentProTemKevindeLeon,D-LosAngeles, the most far-reaching of its kind in the country, would limit state and local law enforcement communication with federal immigration authorities, and prevent officers from questioning and holding people on immigration violations.

After debate in both houses of the Legislature, staunch opposition from Republican sheriffs and threats from Trump administration officials against sanctuary cities, Senate Bill 54 was approved by the Senate on a 27-11 vote along party lines. But the bill sent to Gov. Jerry Brown drastically scaled back the version first introduced, the result of negotiations between Brown and de Leon in the final weeks of the legislative session.

On the Senate floor minutes before 2 a.m. Saturday, de Leon said the changes were reasonable and reflected a powerful compromise between law enforcement officials and advocates.

PREBYS BOARD IN LEGAL FIGHT OVER SON’S INHERITANCE SETTLEMENT Philanthropist’s partner insists Eric Prebys get nothing from $1B estate

BY JOHN WILKENS When Point Loma philanthropist Conrad Prebys died last year from cancer, he left behind legal papers detailing who should receive gifts from his $1 billion estate.

And who should not.

Over and over, in typewritten clauses that were underlined, he excluded his only child, Eric Prebys, a physicist who at one time had been in line for $40 million.

That disinheritance is at the heart of a court fight that is brewing in San Diego Superior Court between directors of the Conrad Prebys Foundation, which is due to receive the bulk of the estate and distribute it to charities.

Late last year, after Eric Prebys threatened legal action, the directors voted 4-1 in favor of a settlement: $9 million, plus the estate taxes, for a total gift estimated at $15 million.

The lone dissent came from Debra Turner, Conrad Prebys’ longtime partner. She said Prebys was “adamant” that his son receive nothing after a falling-out in 2014, and that it would be wrong to disregard his wishes.

The story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, In the Heights won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations.

September 13–30, moonlightstage.com Back in the ’90s, Johnny Depp charmed film audiences in Benny & Joon with his portrayal of Sam, an eccentric whose silent-comedy-inspired behavior helps him win the heart of Joon, a mentally disturbed woman living with her brother Benny. The Old Globe will premiere its rendition of the story this month.

September 7–October 22, theoldglobe.org For nearly a decade, the vocal group Sacra/Profana has been blending traditional choral performance with innovative programming, including reimaginings of pop hits by Prince and Maroon 5 and world premieres by contemporary composers. The theme for their ninth season is “Building Bridges,”

Now San Diego Musical Theatre is partnering with California Ballet to bring Billy Elliot to the Spreckels Theatre.

The Trolley Dances are back for their 19th year, and this time they’re heading to Chula Vista. Jean Isaacs’ San Diego Dance Theatre sends 50 intrepid dancers onto mass transit to perform site-specific dances with all-new choreography. Find them on the MTS Blue Line from Chula Vista to downtown over two weekends. September 30– October 8, sandiegodancetheater.org The big news at La Jolla Playhouse this year is that its acclaimed Without Walls (WoW) Festival is moving downtown under new festival director Meiyin Wang.

This fall the San Diego Rep’s Sam Woodhouse directs Hand to God, a dark comedy about Tyrone, a hand puppet who comes to life and possesses the arm of a Texas church youth group member. Considering the explicit language advisory, this show is not for the kiddies, but if it’s half as funny as Avenue Q, we’re in. October 19– November 12, sdrep.org Our San Diego Symphony keeps rolling out lush seasons, exploring everything from the great classical works to world music and chamber pieces. This season is no exception. A standout: French piano virtuoso JeanYves Thibaudet returns with both a Masterworks concert led by Edo de Waart, featuring selections by Wagner, Liszt, and Strauss, and a more intimate afternoon performance as part of the Chamber Music Series. The city’s most artistically accomplished ballet company, City Ballet of San Diego, celebrates its 25th anniversary this season. With George Balanchine’s Serenade on the program of the season opener, as well as Peter Martins’s Ash, Stravinsky’s The Firebird, and Samuel Barber’s gorgeous Adagio for Strings— the latter two choreographed by City Ballet’s own Elizabeth Wistrich—plus live orchestral accompaniment, we’re pegging this as our top dance pick of the fall. San Diego Opera’s making Gilbert and Sullivan fans happy by starting its season with the popular Pirates of Penzance. The company has pulled off a casting coup with three members of opera aristocracy in the main roles—bass Greer Grimsley as the Pirate King; with his real-life wife, mezzo Luretta Bybee, as Ruth; and their daughter, rising soprano Emma Grimsley, as Mabel. The elder Grimsley has been a local audience favorite for many years in traditional badguy bass-baritone roles, so watch him let his (glorious) hair down as the Pirate King. The small but feisty Bodhi Tree Concerts won “Best of the Fest” at this summer’s San Diego Fringe Festival for 8 Songs for a Mad King. This fall the group, which donates 100 percent of its profits to relevant charities, brings back a show it premiered last year to rave reviews. All Is Calm tells the story of the Christmas Truce of World War I through a cappella songs and letters, performed at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park in conjunction with a special exhibition.
