Summer Fun and Smart School Days On August 7 the Special Needs Resource Foundation of SD and San Diego Family Magazine are having a Day of Play & Resource Fair from 10 am–1 pm. With summer almost over, we thought we’d have a party before school starts—join us! It is for everyone, kids (toddlers to age 10), moms, dads, grandparents, teachers and more. See details on page 15. Family Magazine is covering summer time and school topics this month. Having the beach right here brings us great ocean adventures, some with beach activities and some without. Check them out on page 26. Every child should have a chance to learn and thrive. Sometimes there are early childhood red flags that parents should pay attention to. You know your child; if you feel there may be a problem with your child’s development, question it. Emily Dolton gives great information and places to find help on page 16. Learning to read opens up adventures for life. Read to your children daily and let them read to you. Ask them questions about the story, let them tell you the story and have them change the ending. Books are available to borrow through your neighborhood library. All you need is a library card, which is free. August 10 is National S’mores Day, but can’t everyday be a s’mores day? Cruise our website for s’mores ideas at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/dining-andrecipes. What’s one thing you’re doing now to prepare for the start of school? Lisa Pawlak contributing writer Absolutely nothing— we’re enjoying a carefree summer!

Michele Hancock, marketing director Our son is transitioning from elementary to middle school where he will have a PE locker for the first time. Every week we have him practice opening the lock on his own. By the time he needs it, he’ll be a pro! And it’s one less “new experience” for him to worry about. Jenny Burman, calendar editor I bought workbooks for my soon-to-be third-grader to work on before school starts. He may not always like it (“C’mon, Mom, it’s summer!”), but it’s a great way to get him acquainted with what he’ll learn in the coming year. Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant One of my favorite memories of back-to-school season was school supply shopping! I recommend getting to stores early. Many people wait until the week before school starts when selection is limited. Get a supply list from your child’s teacher, if possible.
