Shorter & Sweeter

Most schools are back in the swing of things. Kids have school supplies, backpacks and lunch bags packed with their favorite foods. New clothes may be a bit big now, but will probably be too small in six months. You, the parents, are also settling into a routine, hopefully getting involved in your child’s school. Read about the importance of school involvement on page 22. When you know what the kids are doing and learning, it demonstrates interest in them. When kids are not attending school, there are opportunities for great afterschool activities. Check over the ads in this issue for afterschool programs. Tell our advertisers you saw them in San Diego Family. Discover the benefits of theater arts on page 18 and read about Jackie Foster, originally from Poway, who was on Season 14 of “The Voice.” Apples are ripening—and farms are starting to open. It is so much fun to pick your own apples and talk to farm staff about their trees and fruit—a great fall family tradition. Check out page 42 for local U-pick apple orchards. Find apple recipes at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/dining-recipes/apple-reciperound-up. Don’t forget Grandparents Day on Sept. 9. It’s great being a grandma! As the grandkids grow up and get taller than me, it is amazing to see them become young adults. My first grandson is attending University of Nebraska now, majoring in engineering. I am very proud of you, Carter, and wish you the best.
