It’s not Christmas in San Diego without a visit to snowcovered Whoville. Don’t miss Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, now in its 21st season at the Old Globe Theatre. Based on the classic book, this colorful musical is filled with whimsy and fun for the whole family. Favorite songs include “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” “Santa for a Day” and “Fah Who Doraze,” the memorable carol from the animated film. Playing now through Dec. 29. A sensory-friendly performance on Dec. 1 is designed for guests with special needs. Visit www.theoldglobe.org for tickets.
Make Copley Symphony Hall your home for the holidays! Noel Noel! is a festive family concert featuring Broadway powerhouse vocalist Bryonha Marie Parham (Ragtime, Book of Mormon, Porgy and Bess, Prince of Broadway). This glittering annual concert includes classics of the season like “Believe” from Polar Express. Running Dec. 15 and 20–22. A special one-hour family performance on Dec. 16 brings the toe-tapping tunes of A Charlie Brown Christmas, an audience sing-along and a telling of the beloved story of The Night Before Christmas brought to life by the music of the orchestra. Purchase tickets at www.sandiegosymphony.org.
Dreaming of an old-fashioned Christmas? Just one hour east of San Diego, the historic mountain community of Julian offers a unique seasonal experience—and often even snow! Take a glimpse back in time to the famous California Gold Rush. Meet Santa and drop letters in his mailbox on the Town Hall porch weekends in December from 12–4 p.m. Local churches present a living nativity Dec. 1, 8 and 15 at 5 p.m. Learn more at www.visitjulian.com.
Be part of the tradition at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. All are invited to take part in their annual Christmas Eve celebration (Dec. 24), which includes two inspiring services. Both events are free to attend. Learn more at www.firstchurchsd.com.
