Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Oh No! It’s Back-to-School Time Already! Time is flying by so fast! With a blink of an eye, we are preparing for the start of school. But we can still have some fun before school begins. Check out our “Summer Fun After Dark” article on page 26 and our calendar on page 30 for more fun things to do. S’mores should always be enjoyed. Thanks to Pinterest, I have a new recipe: saltine crackers with a peanut butter cup and a marshmallow. Salty and sweet! San Diego Family Magazine and Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego are hosting a “Day of Play” on Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Miramar College campus. It’s free, but please pre-register for the event. See more details on pages 14 and 34. We will see you there! If you are a first-time elementary school or middle school parent, read helpful tips for starting each level on page 18. Get involved at your kids’ school. The kids enjoy seeing you there and everyone benefits when parents help. We all learn in different ways. Do you know what learning style your child gravitates to? Read about them on page 16. If he isn’t learning important concepts, talk with his teacher. There are other ways to teach and learn material. You, the parent, should inquire before your child gets behind. You are his advocate.
Families
Woo hoo! We get kinda excited about things like National S’mores Day (Aug. 10). Here are some of our sweet sentiments about s’mores: Randy Hahn, marketing representative S’mores automatically make me think of being around a fire while camping with my family. Sometimes I like to add caramel to them!
Michele Hancock, marketing director Our family loves roasting s’mores at the beach! Sometimes we even substitute chocolate with a Peppermint Pattie or peanut butter cup. Secure a fire pit by booking a Signature Paradise Beach Experience through Paradise Point Resort. They supply all items needed to roast s’mores!
Nicole Maggio, marketing representative I love making s’mores in a cast iron skillet. First graham crackers, then chocolate (any kind), then top with marshmallows and bake until golden brown. Share with loved ones and tell family stories.

Lisa Gipson, managing editor As a long-time Girl Scout leader, I learned years ago to “make” (very necessary) Emergency S’mores: two Teddy Grahams, mini marshmallows and a miniature Hershey’s chocolate bar, packed in a mini bag. It’s one of our most pinned posts on our S’mores Round-Up Pinterest board!
