Who is Abhiraj Bhal? Mr. Abhiraj Bhal (Abhiraj Singh Bhal) is the Co-founder and CEO of UrbanClap (now renamed to Urban Company). Abhiraj’s early few years were spent mainly in Mumbai where he completed his schooling at Navy Children’s school and post completing 8th standard he moved to Visakhapatnam to complete the later part. He holds a bachelors of technology degree from IIT-K and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad (Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad) After completing his master’s he started working with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Singapore as a consultant where he advised fortune 500 companies across India, Germany, and South East Asia. Post working with BCG for over 3 years Abhiraj returned to India and started a movie streaming venture called Cinema Box (a service that helped one stream movies on their smartphones while traveling through Wi-Fi) with Varun Khaitan, his batchmate from IIT-Kanpur who was working with the Boston Consulting Group, America. Varun and Abhiraj met Raghav Chandra, a computer science graduate from the University of California, Berkeley who had previously worked with companies like Yelp and Twitter. Raghav Chandra at that time was working on his auto-rickshaw aggregator start-up called Buggy. in In the initial conversation, Abhiraj Bhal & Varun Khaitan dismissed the idea of joining Raghav Chandra’s buggy.in and Raghav Chandra felt the same about joining Abhiraj & Varun’s venture Cinema box. So how did Abhiraj Bhal, Varun Khaitan & Raghav Chandra come up with the idea of UrbanClap which is now known as Urban Company? Abhiraj Bhal, Varun, and Raghav soon closed their start-ups and finalized home services as space they would like to venture into. Seeing that the Indian home services sector is fragmented and largely unorganized. Initially, all 3 started looking for beauticians, plumbers, photographers as they would then connect them to friends and families. After which they started testing this idea with employees of their friend’s companies and browsed FB groups intending to find people looking for these services. They created a website urbanclap.com in the year 2014 and made the company made its first investment of 4000Rs on Facebook advertising. In the initial days, they bootstrapped the company till Accel Partners and SAIF Partners invested 1.6 million $ in UrbanClap.
