Welcome to our latest edition of Sandal Living.

This is now our fourth edition of the magazine which I must say is going from strength to strength, not only in exciting and interesting articles about Sandal, BMW and MINI but also for our friends who choose to advertise with us.

It has been a very busy start to the year with BMW and MINI continuing to support some very strong offers on the range of new cars, a selection, as always is shown later within this magazine.

We are finding that customer confidence is becoming stronger as we continue to buck the trend with a stunning line up of both new and used vehicles and now, as the sun starts to shine (finally) we have APRs as low as 2.9% on our BMW Convertible range!

To keep the good news flowing, BMW are launching some very exciting new models this year with the introduction of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo and the all new BMW 4 Series. The Gran Turismo is a 3 Series hatchback with an elegant coupé roofline and exceptionally spacious interior. I was lucky enough to see this car in the 'flesh' in Helsinki (which was marginally colder than the UK). The new 4 Series sees the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible rebranded into its own series number. Please see the articles later in this issue, for further information.

Towards the end of the year BMW will be launching the BMW i and I am delighted to announce that Sandal Huddersfield has been appointed the Areas Approved Dealer.

This really is great news as only 42 dealers from the network are to be able to supply the new brand. Our Dealer Principal, Richard Avery was recently invited to London to see the car and learn more about the vision BMW have for electric mobility. They have redesigned the 'Car' from the ground up rather unlike other manufacturers who simply add batteries to existing platforms. BMW are the first ever to make use of carbon fibre passenger cells in a production vehicle which is a massive step forward in automotive production. When BMW set out to do something, they set out to do it right, trust me when I say that this car is going to make the world think differently and start using electric cars on a regular basis.

I believe that BMW chose Sandal for two main reasons. The first being the investment in the new Huddersfield Dealership which continues to impress everyone who visits and secondly and probably more importantly our customer satisfaction results across the group. BMW were the first (and still the only) motor manufacturer to introduce a 'TripAdvisor' style rating system to customer satisfaction. Some people in the motoring industry were a little concerned about being this transparent, but I do see this as a positive step. Sandal continually work hard to ensure that customers receive the very best customer service possible. Customer satisfaction scores and comments can be seen on the front pages of our Dealership websites. I am extremely pleased with our results as we are regularly in the top ten rankings within the country, but this does need consistent focus and hard work by our team to ensure we stay there.

I must credit our fantastic aftersales team who work tirelessly to ensure that Sandal remains highly competitive for all types of service works that your BMW or MINI may require. You may have heard or seen BMWs recent marketing campaign with respect to BMW Value Service. This range of reduced priced service items drive the costs down for any BMW or MINI models that are four years old or older. Whist talking about our Aftersales facility, this gives me the perfect opportunity to remind customers about Service Inclusive. THE NEW BMW Z4 ROADSTER.

BMW’s classic roadster is now even more appealing. As well as featuring new interior and exterior design enhancements, the latest BMW Z4 sees the introduction of the new sDrive18i, offering a lower starting price for the new range.

This new engine derivative is available in both SE and M Sport, and starts at £26,660. All new Z4 models feature turbocharged engines for enhanced performance and efficiency, Drive Performance Control for tailored driving modes and optional eight-speed Sport automatic transmission.

Hannah Cockcroft visits Sandal Huddersfield to meet our customers and show off her two Paralympic GOLD medals.

Hannah Cockcroft certainly has made a name for herself since competing in the London 2012 Paralympic games. Winning not one but two Gold Medals in the T34 100m and 200m by a blistering 1½ seconds and 2¼ seconds respectively ahead of her closest rival. In fact she was so fast she has adopted the nickname of ‘Hurricane Hannah’

A NEW ERA BEGINS FOR BMW AND SANDAL.

SANDAL HUDDERSFIELD APPOINTED BMW i DEALER Sandal Huddersfield are delighted to confirm their appointment as one of only 46 dealers in the country to be awarded the BMW i Franchise.

Sandal Huddersfield’s new dealership and their exceptional customer service levels stood out to the BMW Board arranging which dealers within the country would qualify to be BMW i approved.

alternative sustainable options for mobility. Producing an electric vehicle that is as sustainable to build as it is to run means using renewable primary products and innovative design. BMW are mindful of the desire to create the Ultimate Driving Machine without compromise on performance. This car will do all this and more when it arrives with us later this year.”

Since 2008, the BMW Group has been investigating customer needs with regards to electric driving within the world's largest emobility field trial. As part of the test process, more than 12.5 million miles of testing by more than 1,000 pilot customers in ten countries was conducted and dynamically assessed. The findings showed that the distances covered by electric vehicles differ only slightly from the distances covered by conventional ones, at an average of 25 miles a day. Based on this fact as well as findings on drivers' charging patterns and the general importance of public charging station locations to drivers, BMW i set out to design the BMW i3 Concept Coupé.

BMW i stands for innovative mobility services, visionary vehicles, inspiring design and sustainability combined with the Ultimate Performance. This range of 'concept cars' will soon become a reality with the BMW i3 launching in 2013 and the BMW i8 arriving in 2014. Thanks to intelligent BMW eDrive technology, the battery of the BMW i3 Concept Coupe is designed to require recharging just once every two to three days, which compares to a range of 80 to 100 miles. BMW eDrive is as tailored to one's drive through the city as it is comfortable with longer, out-of-town journeys. A specially developed highvoltage, lithium-ion battery powers this drive system and all other vehicle functions, setting new benchmarks in energy efficiency. The battery's intelligent heating-cooling system ensures that its energy output (and hence the vehicle's range) is less affected by temperature fluctuations than is typical of such batteries today. Reducing the energy needed to run the BMW i3 Concept Coupe's various intelligent electrical components was also at the forefront of engineering priorities. Subsequently, the vehicle's cabin heating saves 30% of energy compared to conventional electrical heating systems, while the internal and external lighting employ energy-saving LEDs. These are two details that make a significant contribution to the vehicle’s

100 mile range security. In addition, the use of various driving modes can boost the range by up to 25%. Eco Mode and EcoPro+ Mode mean that the cars driver can comfortably extend pure electric vehicle range by up to 124 miles.

The most important difference for the owner of an electric car is a change in fuelling habits. Soon after purchasing an electric car, you'll find that fuelling becomes more of an intuitive routine than a specific operation.

BMW i drivers will be able to make use of a

specially developed navigation system to locate the nearest of a growing number of public charging facilities in urban areas.

This enables e-motorists to recharge their car at specific city-centre locations. Where available, customers will even be able to make an advanced reservation of a charging station. Before long, e-motorists will also be able to park and charge their car in public car parks, benefiting in full from flexible and time saving park and charge facilities.

Car makers all over the world are rushing out electric models, BMW i’s LifeDrive architecture is the first to be custom-built for electric cars.

The first ever use of series produced carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cells in automotive production is one of BMW i’s most innovative and pioneering contributions to electromobility.

Since the added weight of the batteries means more power is required to drive an electric car from A to B, this has traditionally reduced the range of electric cars.

So much for tradition.

Through the first ever use of carbon fibre components in automotive engineering, BMW i has succeeded in entirely offsetting the additional weight. Thus it is no exaggeration to talk of a revolution in manufacturing technology. Up to now, the use of carbon fibre components in automobiles has been prohibitively expensive since processing these hightech parts required a great deal of manual work. But BMW i has changed this scenario with the launch of the first series production car featuring a carbon fibre passenger cell.

Range Extender, the REx, which allows the electric driving range to be increased.

REx, a small, very smooth-running and quiet petrol engine, drives a generator which maintains the battery charge level and therefore extends the range of the electric motor. As soon as the battery charge reaches a critical level, REx supplies the necessary energy to get the driver the rest of the way to his destination.

In a sense, therefore, the Range Extender is like having a reserve fuel can on board.

Range Extender increases the driving range.

The very compact size of the electric motor used in the BMW i3 Concept means there is room left over to accommodate REx and its attached generator over the rear axle, alongside the drive components. The petrol engine complies with the SULEV standard, currently the strictest emissions standard for internal combustion engines. To reduce fuel consumption to a minimum, REx also features such functions as Automatic Start-Stop and other intelligent operating strategies.

As the MINI E field tests showed, a driving range of 120 to 150 kilometres (74 to 93 miles) was sufficient to meet 90 per cent of the mobility requirements of the pilot users. However, some customers want a longer driving range, or want their vehicle to be as flexible as possible. The BMW i3 Concept therefore offers an optional

‘Onward and Upwards’ FC HalifaxTown We are delighted to be introducing FC Halifax Town, a professional football club situated in the heart of Calderdale, playing at the excellent Shay Stadium in the centre of Halifax, a grade 'A' stadium with a 10,000 plus capacity.

FC Halifax Town was born, following the demise of the previous Club Halifax Town AFC, a former Football League Club latterly playing in the Football Conference Premier division. The new Club was formed as a totally new entity in 2008, starting life three divisions lower in the Northern Premier League, North One. Within a short period of time, the football club has enjoyed great success on and off the field and is striving for more. After a first season of consolidation, former Leeds United and Port Vale defender Neil Aspin was appointed Manager, bringing his 600 plus appearances worth of experience in the Football League into management to help try and move Halifax back up the leagues and a possible return to the Football League.

Two consecutive title wins has brought the Club to Football Conference North, only one league from where the old club last played. In addition last season, the Club progressed to the first round proper of the FA Cup, drawing the now Championship side Charlton Athletic to the Shay Stadium in front of a live, national ITV audience and nearly six thousand fans, for a noon kickoff. Reaching the quarter finals of the FA Trophy this season with the Wembley arch reaching touching distance, has created a lot of interest far and wide and a wonderful profile for the new Club with excellent gates.

Off the field the Club has received wonderful support from the loyal fans of Halifax, also the Club has successfully built healthy match day sponsorship through various mediums, full match, associate, match ball, mascot and dining packages, whilst enjoying 500 plus turnouts for Sporting Dinners, End of Season Award events and now the hugely successful Golf Day, being held at Bradford Golf Club in June. Fund raising for all clubs below the Premiership is vital and Halifax is certainly no different. In May: 1: Cut back Lavender bushes and other grey-leaved shrubs using a good pair of sharp secateurs. This will prevent the plants getting too straggly and, by removing any dead wood, you'll also prolong the life of the shrub...

3: Earth potatoes up as they grow. This will prevent the crop going green, support the plants and encourage a bigger yield.

1: Plant out summer bedding. The danger of frost has now passed.

1: Sow Spring Cabbage and Biennial Cauliflower. These will be ready the following spring.

2: Prune any spring flowering shrubs that have already flowered.

3: Roses look their best now. Protect against pest and diseases and deadhead to prolong flowering.

2: Prepare and plant new Strawberry beds. The soil is warm and the new plants will soon establish. Do not allow them to form suckers.

Tiny speakers with a huge voice!

In the last edition of Sandal Living we put to test the Bose Solo TV sound system and were more than impressed with the sound that the unobtrusive, single speaker system produced. The Initial test was connected to a PC in the Marketing office. Bearing in mind that the Marketing Department produce the new Sandal ‘Radio’ station (which you can hear within the BMW showrooms) they need a reliable and good quality system. However, jealousy soon set in with the sound quality from Bose and the search for a better system commenced.

In came a pair of tiny Bose Computer MusicMonitor speakers to test. When we describe them as tiny, we mean tiny, about the size of small bag of sugar and weighing about the same as a 1kg bag of sugar. Two tiny speakers and that’s it, no bass box, simple. Plug the left speaker in, the power lead and the audio lead from the device (this could be anything with a headphone socket such as an iPod, iPad, PC or laptop) and that’s it, so simple.

The proof is now in the tasting as they say, how would these speakers hold up against the many larger systems with separate bass boxes? One word, unbelievable! These small speakers deliver a surprising ‘full’ sound with a good level of bass. Marketing are happy!

For those of you who haven't come across this internet sensation it starts by one person dancing in a ‘Dad’ dancing style then in a flash other people join in. It appears the crazier the better.

The Harlem shake started in February 2013 by five teenagers from Queensland, Australia known on YouTube as The Sunny Coast Skate and instantly became a world wide hit. The huge success of the Harlem Shake catapulted the song to number three in the UK charts and that was without any radio airplay.

SANDAL LAUNCH THE MINI PACEMAN WITH A NIGHT TO REMEMBER To launch the New MINI Paceman Sandal held a 'Party' night on Friday 15th March 2013.

The MINI Showroom was relocated into the workshop leaving just the star of the show - The MINI Paceman.

Before revealing the new Paceman, guests were entertained by our resident DJ "MC MC". Special Cocktails with MINI themed names and Delicious Canapés were served by Performing Arts Students from Kirklees College.

Guests had a chance to win all sorts of prizes on our Fun Casino Tables including a brand new MINI Cooper with our Roll A Dice game of chance, unfortunately this time nobody scooped the prize but then there’s always next time?

Guided Dealership tours of the new facilities gave our customers the chance to see behind the scenes including the BMW facilities.

A 'fun photo booth' was on hand for customers to take home a photo souvenir of the event.

The reveal of the Paceman saw the Kirklees College Students change from Waiting Staff to a 25 strong dance troop performing a high energy 'flash-mob' style reveal to the Harlem Shake.

Paul Hartley, our Brand Manager provided a static presentation on the MINI Paceman including some of the styling cues and specification highlights of the new model.

The “4” represents a new focus for the 3 Series with its own individual character and a standalone design with added aesthetic and dynamic appeal. This latest addition of nomenclature sees BMW building on the traditions of the BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series Coupés, while the “4” further stands out from the BMW 3 Series range thanks to its greater emphasis on sportiness and exclusivity.

The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé showcases a new athletic and elegant generation of mid-size coupé. An array of highquality details showcase the car’s perfectly balanced coupé proportions while the expertise of BMW Individual styling, skilled hand craftsmanship and carefully selected materials combine to create a luxurious interior.

The BMW 4 Series Coupé’s elegant lines and athletic surface interplay embody the qualities and expertise of BMW design which emanate from its sporting silhouette. The car’s proportions mean it’s instantly recognisable as a BMW: its long wheelbase, long sweeping bonnet, set-back passenger compartment and short overhangs propel the 4 Series Coupé forwards even before its engine stirs. At the same time, its stretched proportions exude an athletic elegance with the rear wheel arches marking the widest point of the car, and taut lines and surfaces etching emotion and precision into the body. The Coupé’s sophisticated detailing combines with functional elements such as air intakes and vents, door openers and exterior mirrors to give the interior a visual lift with satin-finish aluminium accents.

Precise contours and multifaceted surfaces define the face of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé. The characteristic BMW frontend, featuring the kidney grille and twin circular headlights, now has a slim, sporty design but is still clearly recognisable as a BMW.

The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé front-end displays a clear link with the BMW 3 Series family, but its features are enhanced to give it an even more dynamic look. To optimise aerodynamics and keep fuel consumption low, the kidney grille is closed off and the areas between the satin-finish grille slats are blanked off.

The full-LED headlights are an angular take on the customary BMW twin circular design. The dynamically chiselled, slimmer interpretation of this iconic design cue integrates seamlessly into the front end. The design of the headlights adopts the link between the lights and kidney grille familiar from

the BMW 3 Series and takes it to the next level, rendering this connection visible at night as well as in the day. An optical fibre leads from the inner headlight tube and forms a visual link between the inner headlight and the kidney grille, giving the front end of the Coupé an even broader look.

The most radical feature of the car’s nose is the large air intake in the front apron. Its wide opening hints at the powerful engine encased within and guides the eye to the muscular flared wheel arches. The vent surrounds on either side replicate the contours of the headlights to give the front end an even wider and more sporting look.

Three sculptured, satin-finish aluminium trim elements in the intake accentuate the width, giving the aperture a sporty three-way split.

The sides of the two flanking vents are of differing thickness to define specific areas of the intake for brake and oil cooling and for the Aero Curtain. This EfficientDynamics feature channels the incoming air around the outside of the wheels, ensuring the airflow “hugs” the wheel arches and fuel consumption is reduced as a consequence.

Typical BMW proportions and a stretched silhouette define the athletically elegant side view of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé, with elongated lines and contoured surfaces providing a lively interplay of light and shadow.

The gently downward-sloping roofline creates a smooth transition into the rear, stretches the overall appearance of the car and accentuates the athletic appeal. The exterior mirrors extend organically out of the shoulderline seamlessly integrating aerodynamic function with aesthetic form.

The 4 Series Coupé boasts elegantly moulded shoulders where surfaces blend harmoniously as the roof slopes down and merges into the sleek silhouette.

The Air Breather, an aerodynamically effective aperture behind the front wheels, hints at the sophisticated aerodynamics of the Coupé. It draws a path between the two light surfaces of the car’s flanks, replicating the front-end elements. The Air Breather works in tandem with the Aero Curtain to minimise the drag around the wheels. Exclusive 20-inch lightalloy wheels, with three-dimensional multispoke design, complete the look with an air of sporting elegance.

The L-shaped rear lights blend harmoniously into the car’s overall design, continuing down the side they are an integral part of the exterior design. The tail lights taper in towards the centre of the rear end, but flare out towards the outer edges, underlining the Coupé’s broad, squat stance. A full-sized light element within the rear lights reproduces the signature BMW “double L” in three-dimensional form.

The interior of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé follows the traditional BMW recipe, blending sportiness and exclusivity seamlessly into a single package. The interior wraps around the driver in typical BMW driverfocused style.

The most important controls are grouped ergonomically around the driver to ensure all functions are within easy reach. The “layering” approach underlines the dynamic feeling inside the 4 Series Coupé.

This dynamic use of lines continues to the door with all the lines streaking backwards towards the rear of the car, pulling the focus of the interior towards the front. At the same time, clearly defined surfaces around the window sills and door trim panels converge at the B-pillar and into the rear in a tightly structured horizontal movement connecting the front and rear compartments. The arrangement of surfaces around the doors, side walls and window sills forms a cocoon around the passengers and generates a sense of security. The strong contouring of the rear seats makes them appear as two individual seats joined together, emphasising the sporting character of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé.

Sandal Living were recently invited to attend Yorkshire's most stylish get together when Harvey Nichols Leeds held their Spring/Summer 2013 fashion show.

The venue at Victoria Quarter Leeds was transformed into a high fashion runway with the production theme taking inspiration from futuristic materials, creative projections and stunning lighting.

At the start of the evening we were treated to a glamorous drinks reception before being seated along a catwalk which ran the entire width of the beautiful arcade.

Ahead of the first trend taking to the runway the impactful sound of broken mirrors and shattered fragments echoed throughout the venue before the first model stepped onto the catwalk sashaying over shards of glass cleverly projected along the mosaic floor.

The show encompassed a carefully curated showcase of the key looks for Spring/Summer 2013 with fashion labels including Alexander McQueen, Gucci plus 'new breed' brands Acne, DKNY and many more.

Sandal Living were in good company with front row guests including Olympic gold medallist, Nicola Adams MBE and actresses Gaynor Faye, Nicola Wheeler and Michelle Hardwick from ITV's Emmerdale. Every new BMW X model is a trailblazer. Indeed, the world premiere of the first BMW X model (the BMW X5) in 1999 saw the BMW launch into the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment – one in which BMW X models remain the market leaders. The BMW X3 and BMW X1 were likewise the first SAVs in their class and continue to set the pace amongst their rivals today. This development took on a new dimension in May 2008 with the introduction of the BMW X6 – the first Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). This still unique concept brought together the rugged looks of a BMW X model with the emotion and sporting character of a BMW Coupé for the first time.

With the BMW Concept X4, BMW offers a preview of the future of the BMW X family. It takes no more than a glance to see how smoothly the qualities of a BMW X model can blend with the genes of a BMW Coupé. The new Sports Activity Coupé concept from BMW is poised to continue the success story of the BMW X6 in a new vehicle class. Eye-catching proportions, tight contours and high-quality details produce an unrivalled product character brimming with emotional appeal, dynamism and the sturdiness you would expect from a BMW X model, while at the same time holding out the promise of outstanding performance and driving dynamics.

All of this can be experienced when the BMW X4 production model rolls out of the factory for its market launch, scheduled for 2014.

The sporting character of the BMW Concept X4 is articulated by its dynamic lines as well as its proportions. With a body length of 4,648mm, a width of 1,915mm and a height of 1,622mm, its exterior dimensions signal sporting elegance

and powerful robustness. In addition to a long bonnet, short overhangs and set back passenger cell, its signature BMW features include a long wheel-base, while 21-inch lightalloy wheels lend an added flourish to the athletic bearing of this Sports Activity Coupé.

A front end with urban sporting presence.

The front-end styling of the BMW Concept X4 exudes hallmark BMW dynamics and the rugged purpose and presence of a BMW X model in equal measure. Classic BMW features such as the kidney grille and stylised twin circular head-lights give the front end a clear identity and ensure it shines out as a BMW the first time you set eyes on it. The BMW Concept X4 lavishes both these frontend design icons with meticulous detail and three-dimensional depth. The large kidney grille stretches out within a solid-looking surround. The high-gloss frame is open to the sides and at its lower extreme, lending it an almost “floating” appearance in the centre of the front end. The grille features prominently sculptured bars with stylish detailing. The grille also comprises of additional air apertures to ensure an increased supply of cooling air to the engine.

The kidney grille is flanked by dynamically contoured full-LED headlights. Inside the light units, a flowing, hexagonal interpretation of the familiar BMW twin circular appearance points to an unwavering focus on the road ahead. The horizontal continuation of the inner light elements creates a visual connection with the grille, accentuating once again the width of the front end.

This dynamic impression extends to the front apron. In keeping with BMW Coupé tradition, the side air intakes are larger than the inner units and make a visual feature of the increased cooling air requirement – while satisfying that need. Together with the car’s wide track and low centre of gravity, the intakes represent a promise of exceptional performance capability. The side air intakes pick up on a stylistic theme from the kidney grille; their black horizontal bars are, like the grille’s, partly milled out but boast gleaming chrome edges. It all makes for an enticing contrast of materials, a fusion of high-end quality with the characteristic robustness of BMW X vehicles. This design theme concludes in the under-ride protection, where three milled out, gleaming chrome elements present a highquality take on the modern preference for minimalist solidity.

The qualities of a BMW X model merge with the values of a BMW Coupé in the muscular silhouette of the BMW Concept X4. Its proportions present a persuasive case for the BMW Concept X4 as the most dynamic vehicle in its segment. In hallmark BMW style, a longer wheelbase, relatively long bonnet, short overhangs and a set-back glasshouse lend the car an undeniable dynamism even when standing still. The striking interplay of surfaces creates a vibrant contrast of light and shadow that exudes a feeling of agility and power.

Chicken pressing with celeriac purée and black pudding Prep time: 15-20 minutes Serves 4-5 Ingredients: 6 x Allums free range chicken legs 500ml duck fat 7 x sprigs thyme

Method:

1x head of garlic ½ celeriac

Set the oven to 100oC and place the chicken legs (seasoned) in a deep roasting tray and cover with duck fat, add the thyme and garlic.

500ml cream

Cover the roasting tray with foil and place in the oven for 3 hours or until the legs are tender and the meat flakes away from the bone.

300g Allums black pudding

Carefully pick the meat off the bone and place to one side.

1 egg

Finely dice the shallot, chop the tarragon and add to the flaked meat with the wholegrain mustard. Season to taste and roll the meat into a large sausage using clingfilm (as pictured)

100g plain flour

Place in the fridge for 1 hour to set, ready to slice.

100g bread crumbs

In the meantime peel and finely dice the celeriac, add to a saucepan and cover with cream (season) slowly cook the celeriac until tender. Drain the cream and blitz into a smooth purée (season to taste) and keep warm.

2 banana shallots 2 x sprigs tarragon 2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard

Blend the black pudding until soft and mould into 15g balls, place into the freezer to firm up. Once firm, breadcrumb the black pudding by rolling in flour, then egg wash then add breadcrumbs and deep fry.

salt to season

To finish the dish, slice two pieces of terrine and place on the plate as pictured, spoon on the celeriac purée and place the black pudding. Garnish with micro herbs. Enjoy!
