UCI, San Diego State University Release Study on Resilience of Native Plants after Major Disturbances

Five things San Clemente should know this week Doheny Desalination Plant Environmental Impact Report Released THE LATEST: On May 23, South Coast Water District (SCWD) announced a draft Environmental Impact Review (EIR) was created to evaluate the possible impacts and mitigation measures of a potential ocean water desalination facility, in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is now available for public review.

Some of the notable issues discussed in the almost 1,000-page EIR are an analysis of the slant well feedwater supply, a geographical survey, a San Juan Creek habitat assessment, a noise study and an assessment of the plants brine dilution.

Rick Shintaku is the General Manager of SCWD and emphasized that the desalination plant is a continued effort to diversify SCWD’s sustainability portfolio.

‘Little Free Library’ Grand Opening THE LATEST: Little Free Libraries are small, front-yard book exchanges that total more than 70,000 around the world in 80 countries from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan and San Clemente.

Local residents Mike and Sandy Woodward said they’ve seen them while traveling and wanted to build one for years.

“After seeing old wood in a neighbor’s trash, we recycled it and built this as an anniversary present to each other,” the couple said. “For the roof we used a recycled piece of Mike’s art using sheets of blue opal.”

THE LATEST: Ecologists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Center for Environmental Biology and San Diego State University have tested the resilience of native plant communities when faced with wildfire, drought and invasion by non-native species, according to a press release from UCI. The research comes after a rip-roaring year of wildfires around Orange County, including in San Clemente where one 750-plus-acre fire came close to homes and the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter in July. Firefighters also had their hands full farther north in Orange County, causing massive evacuations of stables and relocation of horses to San Juan Capistrano.

Other major fires, like the Thompson fire, caused emergency situations and forced thousands of people to evacuate.

The research of species in fire zones, published in Ecosphere, determined whether Orange County plant communities recovered following the 2007 Santiago wildfire and the 2011-2015 California drought.

“The study was possible thanks to 10 years of vegetation monitoring funded by The Nature Conservancy and the Natural Communities Coalition”, the release stated. “Partnerships between academic institutions and land management organizations such as this provide valuable opportunities to monitor and evaluate data to help predict future outcomes of Orange County vegetation after extreme disturbances.”

According to the release, researchers used data from areas of long-term vegetation to compare changes in native and non-native plant cover in burned and unburned areas as well as responses to drought in regions with different native shrub densities.

“They found that coastal sage scrub, the dominant native plant community in Southern California, was generally resilient to wildfire, reaching pre-burn cover within four years,” the release stated. “However, invasive non-native grasses increased in abundance in burned areas, suggesting long-term impacts of fire on native plants.”

The study found that native plants were overall resilient to drought, but areas with dense shrubs were more affected, which suggests drought conditions could have a negative impact. They also found that native wildflowers had the highest diversity in wet years that were preceded by dry years, suggesting they face less competition from invasive non-native grasses, which are also abundant in wet years.

“Our results demonstrated the resilience of native shrub cover to fires along with the susceptibility of dense native shrubs and native grasses to drought and increases in non-native species,” said Dr. Sarah Kimball, first author and researcher at the Center for Environmental Biology at UCI. “They also highlight that land monitoring efforts sponsored by institutions like The Nature Conservancy can help ecologists test hypotheses regarding longterm dynamics in community vegetation.”

“The data suggest that it may be helpful to remove non-native species during fire recover,” the release stated. “The data also shows that grasslands in Orange County are heavily invaded by non-native species, indicating that restoration of those areas should be a priority. As a follow-up to the study, experimental plots have now been set up to test whether removal of non-natives during the first few post-fire years will lead to lower non-native cover in burned areas.”

Study authors were Sarah Kimball, Megan Lulow, Travis E. Huxman and Kathleen Balazs with UC Irvine’s Center for Environmental Biology; Zachary Principe with The Nature Conservancy; and Spring Strahm and Doug Deutschmann with San Diego State University. The research was funded by The Nature Conservancy and the Natural Communities Coalition.

WHAT’S NEXT: In other news, on Tuesday, Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced a bill he supported to assist wildfire survivors underinsured after losing their home passed the state Senate.

California Senate Approves Sen. Pat Bates’ Opioid Education Bill THE LATEST: State Sen. Patricia Bates, R-36, introduced a bill that would address opioid industry issues, under Senate Bill 1109, which passed the Senate floor on May 22.

The bill would require prescribers of an opioid to a minor to discuss risks with the minor’s parent or guardian before issuing the initial prescription as well as require youth sports organizations to distribute information each year to highlight the risks of opioid use, the placement of warning labels on prescription bottles, continuing medical education for prescribers and other provisions.

Local Students Make Semi-Finals at LEGO League Global Innovation Award Competition A local youth robotics team was one of only 20 teams out of 32,000 entries selected to advance to the Eighth Annual FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award competition for their outstanding innovative solution that demonstrated originality while having the potential to add significant value to the world. The local homeschooled robotics team, Operation T.A.C. (Technology & Character), has invented the SeaSafe Water Analysis Kit to better protect swimmers from illnesses contracted while in contaminated water.

The team of six, ages 11 to 15, will travel to San Jose from June 19-21 to present their innovation to expert judges.

All semi-finalists will participate in a two-day, hands-on innovation event at San Jose State University Student Union, which culminates in the awarding of the top prize of $20,000 to continue work on their inventions; two runners-up will take home $5,000 each.

Local Musician Shannon Rae Releases Second Album, ‘Lucky 13’ Local musician Shannon Rae will release her second album, Lucky 13, on Friday, June 1 on all digital retailers. Fourth of July Ocean Festival Ticket Sales Each year during the Fourth of July, the San Clemente Ocean Festival hosts a dinner under the timeless fireworks display at the San Clemente Pier.

National Charity League Honors San Clemente Graduates The Monarch Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) held the Senior Recognition Ceremony honoring the Class of 2018 on Saturday, April 16, at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point. The National Charity League is a mother-daughter organization dedicated to serving local philanthropies while fostering the motherdaughter relationship. Together, mothers and daughters participate in philanthropic work, educational activities, leadership development and cultural enrichment.

Isabella Rofsky will graduate from San Clemente High School and will attend California State University, Fullerton in the fall and study criminal justice. She enjoyed her six years in NCL and her favorite philanthropies include, Special Camp for Special Kids and the Jessie Rees Foundation.

San Clemente Co-Ed Receives Scholarship to Report Data on Opioid Crisis Dartmouth College junior Evan Morgan, a San Clemente resident and San Juan Hills High School graduate, has been selected as a Dartmouth Stamps Scholar. Morgan, a quantitative social science major, will use the scholarship to fund his data journalism project studying the opioid crisis in New Hampshire.

The Dartmouth Stamps Scholars Program was established in 2014 in partnership with the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation to recognize and reward exceptional students who exemplify leadership, perseverance, scholarship, service and innovation. Democratic Women of South Orange County Announces Class of 2018 Scholarship Awards The Democratic Women of South Orange County (DWSOC) is a charted club of the Democratic Party. This week, the DWSOC presented scholarships to high school students in Southern Orange County for their commitment to promoting democracy in their community. This is the inaugural year of the scholarship. Students from Dana Hills High School, San Clemente High School and San Juan Hills High School competed for $500 scholarships, where they had to demonstrate democratic ideals through community service and write an essay.

Dana Point’s Dick Simon to Hang Up Helmet at Indianapolis Motor Speedway The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) recently announced that popular Indy 500 veteran and Dana Point resident Dick Simon has decided to make this year’s Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) his final race as a driver.

Simon, 84, has driven in every Brickyard Invitational since the 2014 inaugural event. The Pro-Am is a feature event of the Brickyard Invitational at IMS. “The Brickyard Invitational has given me the chance to extend my career in a very fun way,” Simon said. “It’s always special to come back to Indy and this racing has been a ton of fun. I am delighted to have my final turn at the wheel during competition to come at the Speedway.”

A veteran of 17 Indianapolis 500s, Simon scored an all-time-best sixth place finish in 1987.

In addition to being a successful racer, Simon is a highly respected team leader who helped launch the careers of notable racers such as two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk and 1992 Rookie-of-the-year Lyn St. James. He also managed the team for Eliseo Salazar’s first Indy Car victory at Las Vegas Speedway in 1997.

The Pro-Am race Simon will compete in is a 45-minute race of American muscle cars on the Speedway’s 2.43-mile Grand Prix road course on Saturday, June 16. The cars are 1963 to 1972 vintage Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs. As in previous years, the professionals will be paired with amateur divers, splitting stints at the wheel at their own discretion.

CUSD Talks Future Bonds and Budget The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) board of trustees on Wednesday, May 23 celebrated many of its teachers, staff and students, at its last meeting of the 2017-2018 school year.

As the board commended CUSD affiliates for a successful school year, they also began discussions for what is on the horizon next year. In the works are a potential bond measure for 2020 and the proposed 2018-2019 budget.

The potential bond measure is being discussed back-and-forth by the CUSD board and its finance advisory committee, working together to find a concept for a potential bond measure to be put on the 2020 ballot.

The board discussed the pros and cons of doing a district-wide bond measure, or to propose a singular, or multiple, location for a bond measure to be proposed. San Clemente was brought up as a potential location for a proposed bond measure. The board is expected to produce a timeline of the bond’s progress at its next meeting.

The proposed 2018-2019 budget is at approximately $502 million, compared to the approximately $499 million from 2017-2018 budget. The majority of expenditures derive from salaries and employee benefits.

The CUSD board did not take an action on the budget and is expected to vote on it at their next board meeting.

Also, the board unanimously voted to approve the tentative agreement with the Capistrano chapter of the California School Employees Association, a $3.8 million contract for July 2016 to June 2018.

The board also agreed to a new term agreement with the association for July 2018 to June 2021.

San Clemente is dealing with a trifecta of problems that we haven’t seen before: Nuclear waste from San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) stored at the beach in thin containers, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) trying to push a toll road through our town, and a growing population of transients. Many of those transients are drug addicts or mentally ill or both. What a great way to start the summer!

Just when things can’t get worse, in comes Federal Judge David O. Carter, the judge who is overseeing the lawsuit filed against the Orange County Supervisors for clearing out the Santa Ana riverbed.

Now he’s demanding “S.I.T.E.S,” or places throughout the county where shelters can be set up to house the homeless. If not, he’s considering limiting anti-camping ordinances. That means the North Beach transients on the Ole Hanson Beach Club lawn can lie there to their hearts’ content.

Their drug dealers deliver, and hard liquor is right up the street.

What’s frustrating about Judge Carter is that he seems to think that shelters will solve our problems. They won’t. AB 109, Prop 47 and 57 are our problems. Data from the OC Housing Outreach Team also found that the people at the Santa Ana riverbed encampment overwhelmingly rejected help or shelter. They prefer the streets, as that allows them free use of drugs.

There’s one more twist to the story; Judge Carter also presides over San Clemente’s MemorialCare Health System lawsuit. It’s safe to say the city is petrified to make a wrong step around the judge, as there’s potentially a $42.5 million judgment on the line.

Perhaps Judge Carter should take something into consideration: San Clemente was once required to have a hospital because of our proximity to SONGS. But with the plant shut down, the requirement ended. I’d say that right now—with nuclear waste being put in thin casks on the beach—we’ve never had a better chance at a toxic spill. And we’ve never had to deal with as many addicts and homeless in town.

Come to think of it, maybe Judge Carter should just give us a break.

doing so, he and his wife Refugio broke widely used racial covenants, which until then prohibited people of Mexican decent (and other racial minorities) from owning a home in this “Spanish Village by the Sea.” The story of how a local citizen helped the Lunas family overcome this unjust obstacle will be one of several true tales from the past covered in the San Clemente Historical Society’s upcoming event. Several descendants of Juan and Refugio will be featured in the program.

This significant free event is open to the public from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 at the Ole Hanson room of the San Clemente Community Center, 100 N. Calle Seville.

This four-generation local family will also share their firsthand accounts of other local historic events such as the fire that destroyed much of the community center in 1970.

The nonprofit San Clemente Historical Society offers quarterly programs to educate, enlighten and entertain residents about historically significant events in our local history.

PLASTIC IS ALMOST THE ROOT OF ALL EVILS KERRY SINK, San Clemente

Since the advent of plastics manufacturing sometime in the 1950s, we can say this business has exploded exponentially.

The bright side is that so many jobs have been created and science and engineering have expanded beyond expectations. The downside today is that plastic is almost the root of all evils.

Oil consumption has been largely blamed on transportation. But the plastic industry is never held accountable because it has become a necessity. As a fisherman, I would never get mad at my Plano Tackle box from Plano, Texas.

I was at a fast-food restaurant the other day and they offered me many side dishes in these plastic cups with plastic lids.

The younger generation doesn’t even know the difference because it is so commonplace; people don’t realize that some plastic is just being dumped into the ocean a hundred miles off shore. Here in San

Clemente, people still throw trash out of their cars, cigarette butts all over the place and just ignorant things like that.

I get into small arguments with my wife about sorting the trash. She will put a plastic Oxy Clean container in the normal garbage. I called CR&R and they said they do sort the trash, but it comes at an extra expense to the company. That means our trash bill keeps going up, for one. And another is that the people who dig recyclables out of our bins are taking away from the trash company getting a little bit of revenue back.

Maybe I am the garbage cop at my house, but I see it everywhere and if a few of us make a difference, we might make a difference.

I am willing to pay for my paper to-go boxes at 30 cents per meal or whatever.

That’s why local restaurants can’t do it for free and opt for Styrofoam. With high rent and everything, they have no choice if they want to stay in business.

This all starts with parents. Use wax paper and reduce the snack baggies. Wash your kids’ backpacks and teach them to do it too.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

At the Movies: ‘First Reformed’ Wants the Last Word on Current Issues

aul Schrader is a filmmaker who has really made his mark on cinema as someone who knows how to get into the psyche of men who are mentally unstable. Whether it be his 1976 screenplays for Taxi Driver and Obsession, or four years later with American Gigolo and Raging Bull, even B-movie schlock like his remake of Cat People (1982) or The Canyons (2013) have his trademarks. Now, Schrader’s back with one of his best films on his resume, First Reformed.

Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a chaplain at the oldest church in the state of New York, and he is still struggling with PTSD from his son’s sudden death and divorce from his wife. Mary (Amanda Seyfried) asks for Toller’s help when her troubled husband wants her to get an abortion so to not bring a child into an “evil world” that has climate change and greedy corporations. Throughout the film, Toller journals his contemplations of whether he can physically make a difference in the name of God, or just let everything happen around him as “God’s plan.”

First Reformed has quite a lot of political commentary on climate change, abortion, greed, Christianity and public relations. Schrader, who started his career writing scripts for legends like Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma, has grown organically into his own filming technique and it shows in the best way with Reformed. Hawke and Seyfried are big names, but not big enough to be a distraction from the themes the story is having us question.

If you want to challenge your morals, this is worth a catch. SC

San Clemente celebrates Memorial Day with two separate ceremonies

he ceremonies in honor of Memorial Day that are hosted in San Clemente each year draw thousands to remember American veterans lost at war and to support those who came back.

The first ceremony took place at the San Clemente Community Center, where rows of people attended speeches from military veterans, city officials and others.

‘Making Waves’ Local artist Drew Brophy to showcase career in Myrtle Beach

rew Brophy’s latest art exhibit will be a homecoming—you can hear the South Carolina twang mixed with the Southern California surfer accent, as he reflects on his career.

Surreal images mixed with vibrant colors have been part of Brophy’s style since he began. He said he experimented with different techniques until he found his wave of inspiration and has honed that style ever since.

Brophy was born in South Carolina and first learned to surf in Myrtle Beach.

“I was painting surfboards in South Carolina, and I left home after that and moved to Hawaii, then came to San Clemente,” Brophy said.

The gallery will feature more than 70 pieces of art Brophy has created over the years. He said he had to appeal to owners of his past artwork to let them loan the pieces for the gallery. The artwork will include paintings, illustrations, designs for surfboards, clothing companies and other advertisements.

ist,” Brophy said, adding the atmosphere of San Clemente was idyllic for inspiring his pieces.

Brophy has made designs for …Lost, Stewart and Hobie surf companies for years and was recently commissioned to create a design for a Google surfboard.

One painting prominently displayed in his studio off Avenida Granada is a painting he did 22 years ago. In the painting, a turquoise wave crashes over some phantasmagoric sea life as an anthropomorphic sun exudes clouds of energy through its nostrils. Brophy said he enjoys looking back on some of his earlier work to see how he’s developed as an artist.

“It’s crazy to think that I was making art for a living, when I wasn’t as successful,” Brophy said.

Brophy describes himself as an illustrator for the most part, as he’s designed so many different things for companies. He wasn’t trained at a formal art school.

“It’s kind of become fine art,” he said.

“It’s still the same style, but now it’s more refined. When I started, I did more edgy work, but now it’s more refined. You mature and your mind gets clearer and you’re able to articulate your ideas a bit more. A lot of my art just has a lot of life to it.”

Brophy said he’ll travel to Myrtle Beach a week ahead of the opening to help set up the gallery. Some of the items he collected came as far as Washington state and a few other places around the United States.

The opening day of the gallery, which is titled “Making Waves,” is Saturday, June 23 and ends Sept. 16 at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum. SC

“My brother-in-law is a fitness fanatic, and we came across this machine and did tons of research and thought it was amazing,” Jamie said.

People are able to purchase the machine and use it for their business in order to track people’s weight, muscle mass and more.

“Everyone loves it. We even have a few clients who don’t have a large range of motion who are getting much better; they’re able to get up more and do more things,” Jamie said. “It does everything that you could do in a gym.”

isiting a friend recently I was introduced to a Scandinavian way of life called hygge (pronounced “HUE-gah”). Hygge is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special. My usual visit wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, just a convivial greeting from a friend, being welcomed with a hot cup of herbal tea in a cozy sunroom with the aromatic scent of lavender and bergamot surrounding me.

The word hygge comes from a Norwegian word meaning “well-being.” But it is also speculated that hygge might originate from the word hug. Hug comes from the 1560s word hugge, which means “to embrace.”

For those not familiar, ‘‘hygge’’ refers to the Danish lifestyle craze that’s seen something of an international hysteria of late, according to “What is hygge? How the Danish lifestyle trend became a Word of the Year” published in the Independent.

A concept roughly described as a feeling of comfort and contentment, as well as indulging in all the good things and people in your life, the article reads. It’s one often connected to the idea that the Danes are the happiest people in the world, and that it’s, “hygge” that provides the secret to their success, the article said.

The craze has focused largely on the idea of making the ordinary special, or meaningful, through ritualizing everyday activities such as making a cup of coffee or having dinner; that means putting technology to one side, and embracing simple practices such as lighting candles, purchasing flowers, or brewing real tea in china cups. Sims: Everything that I have accomplished I couldn’t have done without my teammates. We all work together as a unit and of course the best coaching staff on the planet.

ormer San Clemente High School lacrosse star Stone Sims, Class of 2014, helped University at Albany men’s lacrosse reach the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history. Sims, a senior starting defenseman, was the first former Tritons lacrosse player ever to appear in a Division 1 Final Four game as the Great Danes fell to Yale, 20-11, on Saturday, May 26 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The SC Times reached out to Sims before the game to learn more about his and the team’s magical run: SC Times: Stone, congrats on helping get Albany to its first-ever Final Four! Tell us how you and the team are feeling right now?

Stone Sims: Everyone on my team is pumped since we are the first lacrosse team to make it this far in school history.

Boys tennis swept through the South Coast League once again this season to capture its eighth consecutive league title.

The Tritons were led by seniors on the doubles side with Caden Spencer, Michael Tilly, Devin Ursem and Nathan Nasongkhla. Youth paced San Clemente in singles as sophomores Corey Angeli and Griffen Wolf were undefeated in league play.

Wolf won the league singles title, and the team of Angeli and Spencer won the league doubles title. Both advanced to the CIF-SS Individual Sectionals on Thursday,

Junior Alex Pak shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for eighth place and qualify for the state championships at the CIF/SCGA Southern California Championship on Thursday, May 24 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.

Pak shot par on his first 11 holes but hit double-bogey and bogey on the 12th and 13th. He responded by hitting birdie on three of the next four holes to work back to an overall par.

SC Times: How did playing at San Clemente High School help shape you for college? Do you keep in touch with your former SCHS teammates?

Sims: Playing at SCHS got me ready for college mainly because of (former) coach (Glen) Miles, who had taught me so much about the sport and had coached me from seventh grade throughout high school.

SC Times: What advice would you give to high school players who dream of playing college lacrosse?

Sims: If they want to go on to the next level, they have to fully commit to the game along with committing to the weight room, staying in great shape and doing well in school. Without school, you’ll go nowhere. SC

Shippy Advances to State Track Championships Senior Jack Shippy qualified for the CIF State Championships with a personal record in the 100-meter and a season-best long jump at the CIF-SS Masters meet on Saturday, May 26 at El Camino College in Torrance.

Shippy finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.76 seconds, besting his time of 10.82 seconds from the CIF-SS Division 1 finals.

In long jump, Shippy finished sixth with a jump of 22 feet, 5.75 inches. It was just the second jump over 22 feet in his career.

Seniors on San Clemente High School’s national title-winning surf team set sail for broader horizons

t’s another gray morning at T-Street, but the water’s glassy and a few pick-and-choose corners are popping up on the inside. Eighty-pound kids are whipping tight arcs and launching air reverses into the flats. Watching from the bluff, the seniors on San Clemente High School’s (SCHS) national-title-winning surf team are mulling around, checking the surf and trying to downplay the anxiety of their impending finals this week and graduation next week.

“In my time on the surf team, I think the most important thing I’ve learned is balance,” Erika Hunting said.

She’s not talking about the kind of balance required to perform on a surfboard. Hunting will be attending Stanford University this fall and studying bio engineering (and “maybe a little computer science).” She was named the 2018 Triton of the Year, and as coach John Dowell has pointed out, she’s a big reason solar power will soon be incorporated into all of the high schools throughout the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD). In her time at SCHS, Hunting founded the Blue Oceans Club to initiate beach cleanups and the Think Like a Mountain coalition to lead the interscholastic charge for CUSD Solar.

“It’s easy to get stressed out with everything at school, and it’s important to take school seriously, but it’s also important to relax with your friends and have fun,” Hunting said. “With the surf team, it’s definitely been great for me all four years to have that and have a place I knew I could come and just be myself.”

After winning back-to-back national titles the last couple of years, this is a graduating class that’s larger, more accomplished and more driven than most.

Talking to them at T-Street, all of them noted that they’re bound for higher education. Some will attend community colleges until they find their groove, others are bound for four-year universities.

Surfing’s still a large part of who they are and what they do, but some of the wisdom that coach Dowell has imparted on them over the course of the last four

years is that there’s also life outside of the water and that time in the classroom can occasionally supersede time in the tube.

“He taught us the importance of being a well-rounded person, not just a surfer,” said Bryce Crane, who has plans to work as a lifeguard through the summer, then attend Pepperdine University in the fall. He’s planning on studying business administration and hopes to become a member of the surf team. He was also the homecoming king this year.

What’s so impressive is that it’s not like these young adults couldn’t have gone and chased the pro surfing dream.

They’re all remarkably talented. Coming from one of the premier hotbeds of surf talent in the country, some have enjoyed the support of sponsors throughout their tenure as Tritons. For example, Noah Hohenester has ridden for surfwear brand RVCA since he was 9 years old. Next fall, he will attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and study construction management. He’s also hoping to join the surf team there.

Davi Toledo is another example. His brother, Filipe, is currently in the hunt for his first WSL World Title and is coming off of a massive contest win at the Oi Rio Pro last month. Davi rips in his own right, but he’s heading to Saddleback to study business.

“Being down here, surfing with everyone, especially on contest days, it’s been really special,” Davi said. “Good food,

good times, winning everything, that feels good. Now I’ll head to Saddleback and see what happens from there.”

The success stories go on and on.

Another local standout, David Economos, will attend University of California, Santa Barbara in the fall while also committing to the WSL’s North American qualifying series. He plans to study communications, “because it seems like a good way to get a job.”

Zoe Tothier will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and studying graphic design. Elijah Fox is pursuing a meteorology certificate, then hopes to get a degree in meteorology and eventually become a surf forecaster—like his old man, who has forecasted for the Navy.

“I think it would be cool to be a forecaster for Surfline,” Fox said.

A few months back, I was interviewing Andrew Stark, who was the president of Surfing Australia at the time.

A massive organization that governs all things surfing down under, Stark explained, “We’re not just trying to produce good surfers, but also good people.”

The same could easily be said for coach Dowell’s program at SCHS. A dominant competitive force on the high school surf scene, as is so evident by his graduating class this year, the program is not just producing champion waveriders, it’s producing champion humans.

“I like to watch professional surfers ride crazy barrels and complete big airs,” said Tanner, who holds guys like Kelly Slater and John John Florence in the highest esteem because “they ride in barrels that look like closeouts, but sometimes they do the impossible and come out.”

A second-grader at Palisades Elementary School, “I was 4 years old when I really started to pick up surfing,” he said.

Competing in his first Western Surfing Association season this year (he finished second), he also has plans to compete in the Waterman Tour in Tahiti, which is an endurance race that features stand-up paddling, prone paddling and swimming. It’s as much physical as it is mental.

“We are going on our first real surf trip to Tahiti in a couple of weeks,” Sandvig reveled. “In the next 10 years, I want to do surf trips around the world with my family and compete in competitions.” SC
