Five things San Clemente should know this week Assemblymember Rocky Chávez Introduces Bill to Stifle Transportation, Traffic THE LATEST: Surrounded by dozens of “No Toll Road Through San Clemente” shirts, signs and stickers, State Assemblymember Rocky J. Chávez, R-76, announced a new bill he introduced that would limit the efforts of The Toll Roads in Orange County.

The bill, AB 382, which is being attached to legislation already underway in the State Senate, would prohibit the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), the administrator of The Toll Roads, from forming a new faction in an effort to construct more toll roads and it limits the TCA’s ability to increase its debt in order to pay for the roads. Currently, the TCA may have billions in debt obligation, according to a 2015 Orange County Grand Jury report.

Chávez said the bill would also remove all transportation planning functions from the TCA, “leaving the TCA with the ability to service their existing toll roads and complete their debt obligations before the existing toll roads are returned to the public,” Chávez’s prepared statement read.

The notion of returning them to the public stems from the original intent of the TCA, which was to make the roads free after the debt is paid.

A press conference was held on Tuesday, May 8 at Vista Hermosa Sports Park, where nearly 100 people from San Clemente and surrounding cities joined together to announce the introduction of the bill.

Since 2016, the city of San Clemente has been fighting against proposals for toll roads by the TCA. Some of the roads are planned to be studied through San Clemente and would require, in some cases, the use of eminent domain. Many residents in San Clemente have fought against what they see as environmental hazards from the highway and increases in air pollution.

The TCA argues that traffic is slated to increase 63 percent by 2040, but the city of San Clemente recently commissioned a study that differs, showing no significant increase whether a toll road is constructed through South Orange County or not.

Joining Chávez at the press conference were San Clemente Mayor Tim Brown, City Council members Lori Donchak and Kathy Ward, Rancho San Clemente Community Association board president Vonne Barnes, and Coalition to Save San Clemente leader Eva O’Keefe, who initially contacted Chávez about the city’s toll road debate.

First American Flag Raising Ceremony Honors Al Ehlow THE LATEST: The South Coast Detachment of the Marine Corps League conducted its first Flag Raising Ceremony on April 27 in honor of a San Clemente veteran. The first veteran to be honored was Al Ehlow, San Clemente’s Police Chief who worked in various capacities from 1962-1992. Ehlow served as a Marine from 1950-1953 and was Commandant of the Marine Corps League for many years.

In attendance at the ceremony were a number of former San Clemente police officers including Richard Corder who read the eulogy; Captain John Coppock, former Police Chief OCSD San Clemente and the current Police Chief OCSD San Clemente, Mike Peters. Also a number of current OCSD deputies, Marine Corps

League members, and many of Ehlow’s family members. Mayor Tim Brown and City Manager James Makshanoff attended the ceremony.

The Flag Raising Ceremony is conducted by the South Coast Detachment of the Marine Corps League and is available to any San Clemente Veteran who has served their country honorably and upon the passing of their dedicated service and life to this country. WHAT’S NEXT: The next Flag Raising Ceremony will honor San Clemente’s own Fred Dungan World War II Flying Ace, Navy who passed away in January. The date has yet to be announced. THE LATEST: The city of San Clemente will hold a community meeting on the California Coastal Commission (CCC)approved Draft Local Coastal Program (LCP) Comprehensive Land Use Plan (LUP) update. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an overview of the CCC modifications to the LUP and to provide the community with an opportunity to discuss any comments, questions or concerns with the proposed changes to the city’s LUP. Following the community meeting, the City Council will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, June 12 to consider adoption of the CCC modified and approved LUP. Public comments on the LUP may be emailed to Carl Stiehl, senior planner for San Clemente, at stiehlc@san-clemente.org.

National Beach Safety Week is May 22-29 THE LATEST: Last year, San Clemente lifeguards rescued over 1,700 swimmers in distress from local waters, according to a press release from the city of San Clemente. Lifeguards estimate that 80 to 90 percent of these rescues were swimmers caught in rip currents.

Because of these dangers in San Clemente and anywhere there is open water, May 22-29 has been designated as National Beach Safety Week.

WHAT’S NEXT: In recognition of the week, lifeguards will host a free open house at the Marine Safety Headquarters on Saturday, May 26. The event is an opportunity to tour lifeguard headquarters and to talk to some of the lifeguards.

They will share ocean and beach safety tips with visitors. The open house will run from 9 a.m.-noon. All ages are welcome.

Fire at Dana Point Neighborhood was Caused by Human Action, Firefighters Say A fire that broke out May 7 shortly after 1 p.m. in the 34100 block of Capistrano by the Sea in south Dana Point was contained about an hour after it was reported.

Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) received a call at approximately 1:15 p.m. that a fire had broken out in the brush behind residences atop the hill behind the Chevron station at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Del Obispo.

25 OCFA firefighters worked to keep the fire contained and away from residences, and the fire was put out after OCFA dropped water from a helicopter.

Orange County Fire Department Public Information Officer Steve Concialdi said that the fire burned one-eighth of an acre of eucalyptus trees.

Concialdi said the cause of the fire was yet-to-be determined and that the Orange County Fire Investigation team is currently on the scene investigating.

San Juan Capistrano City Council Votes No to Issue Apology to City Staff After Councilmember Alleges City Staff ‘Stole’ $600,000 A divided San Juan Capistrano City Council voted no to a resolution on May 1 that would have formally apologized to city staff on behalf of the Council after Councilmember Pam Patterson alleged that the staff “stole $600,000,” at a City Council meeting on July 18, 2017.

The $600,000 was revenue originally allocated toward street projects that came from a landfill agreement on April 19, 2016 with the county on imported waste.

However, due to unanticipated expenditure increases—namely law enforcement contract increases, decreased sales tax and delayed development fees—city staff proposed via a budget amendment to address the $1.2 million funding gap for the fiscal year 2017-18, Assistant City Manager Jacob Green said.

“Those adjustments include, among other things, retaining the estimated $600,000 in landfill revenue in the general fund rather than allocating it to street projects,” Green said.

The proposal, which city staff brought to the City Council on June 20, 2017, was approved in a 4-1 vote with Patterson opposed. At the July 18 meeting, Patterson claimed that the $600,000 was stolen by city staff.

City Manager Ben Siegel replied that although City Councilmembers are entitled to their opinion, the remarks were offensive.

“To allege that staff is somehow mismanaging the city’s finances and has an interest is frankly offensive and I don’t appreciate it,” Siegel said. “I don’t think it is good protocol and I don’t think it is good for the morale that I always hear is trying to be built and cultivated in this community.”

At the May 1 meeting, Mayor Sergio Farias said he brought forth the resolution to apologize to city staff on behalf the City Council because Patterson has had multiple opportunities to apologize for the accusation but has not; and that a San Juan Capistrano resident has repeatedly asked that the City Council issue an apology to the city’s staff.

Patterson said she would not apologize and would stand her ground. However, she did instead use the word “misappropriate,” throwing out her initial term of “stole.” She added that she felt the funds were misappropriated based on “misleading” information.

20th Annual Teacher Appreciation Award Ceremony Teachers in San Clemente were honored at the 20th Annual Teacher Appreciation Award Ceremony on May 5 at the San Clemente Baha’i Center. About 150 students, teachers and parents were in attendance. The emcees of the event were students from San Clemente High School (SCHS). A few prayers were given by three students, music was performed

by SCHS students and a presentation was given by a young woman who is a university professor.

A brief statement by students about their teachers was read, and then the teachers came to the podium to be presented with a plaque. The awards ceremony was started two decades ago by students who wanted to show appreciation for their teachers. The annual event is hosted by the Baha’i community of San Clemente, located at 3316 Avenida Del Presidente.

Group Wants High School Jazz Returned to Pier A group of people have started a petition to send to City Council for the return of the summer jazz concerts at the San Clemente Pier. The petition, which can be found at www.savejazzatpier.com, achieved more than 400 signatures as of Tues., May 8.

San Clemente City Council voted earlier this year to have the high school jazz band perform at North Beach, possibly during The Market at North Beach, but people who want to see it remain at the Pier gathered May 8 to discuss bringing the petition to the next City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 15.

“After several attempts to resolve this issue with the City Council and the mayor of San Clemente, we are forced to ask the residents of San Clemente and surrounding communities to sign this petition,” a San Clemente Times May 10–16, 2018

The group is requesting a Friday, May 25 performance date.

City Talk to be Hosted on May 16 All San Clemente residents are invited to learn about the city departments, programs and community outreach. Residents can learn how the city operates and what projects and programs are underway.

Guests can also gain an understanding of the nonprofit organizations the city works with and supports too. Light refreshments will be served following the program.

Mayor Tim Brown and fellow City Council members will be presenting to a broad view of the city’s departments and programs as well as community volunteer opportunities. The meeting is from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16 at the San Clemente Baha’i Center, 3316 Avenida Del Presidente.

San Clemente’s Corrie Penraat Named Grove City College Woman of the Year The 2018 Grove City College Senior Woman of the Year award was presented to San Clemente native Corrie Penraat on May 4 in Harbison Chapel on campus.

“The award is among the highest honors that the college bestows on students,” a press release from the Grove City, Pennsylvania college stated. “Selections are made on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service. The candidates are voted on by students and faculty.

Penraat is an international business major with a concentration in French.

At the college, she is involved with student government, the law society, orientation board, okello and is a lifeguard. She served on business department student leadership teams and a student conduct appeals board, and is a member of ODK, Mortar Board and Delta Mu Delta honorary societies. She has earned a spot on the dean’s list with high distinction for four

years. She also sings and plays guitar with worship teams and at coffee house events and has travelled internationally for school and missions work.

After graduation, she’ll be working at Mercy Warehouse in Laguna Niguel, Calif., serving the community and homeless by means of food distribution, donation sorting and assisting with the thrift store while applying for internships with Samaritan’s Purse and World Vision. She plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in international missions.

“I’m thankful, humbled and honored to have received this award. I could not be more appreciative for my time here at Grove City College,” Penraat said in the press release. “It is the people here that have made my time here so unforgettable.

God has been so faithful over the past four years bringing us through the highs and lows that accompany life’s journey. May we continue to walk in faith even when we cannot see.”

State Sen. Patricia Bates to Host Opioid Awareness Forum The public is invited to learn more about the dangers of opioids at a free event on Thursday, May 10. State Sen. Patricia Bates, R-Laguna Niguel, will host an informative forum that will feature experts on the topic of opioids, including a mother who will share her son’s battle with addiction for 13 years.

Bates will be joined by Summer Stephan, the San Diego County District Attorney; Mark Wallace, M.D., University of California, San Diego Health, School Resource Officer from Carlsbad Police Department; and Aaron Byzak of the North Coastal Prevention Coalition.

The forum will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, located at 1775 Dove Lane in Carlsbad.

There will be a drop box available to dispose of expired or unused medications.

Mother’s Day Summons Memories of Life Experiences

I

had a very smart mother, and I was her first child. She stayed home learning how to be a mother and took her role seriously. She taught me how to talk and write. I also began drawing things with crayons. She would show them to family members and hang my pictures on the walls. All this took place before I entered school at age 5, and I had one sister at that time. I enjoyed school and got good grades. I loved painting too.

At some point in time, my parents had me attend a Saturday morning painting class for children in Los Angeles. The teacher was a nice woman with a lot of patience. She had numerous postcards and pictures we could select to paint copies on a canvas and take home when we were finished. Our class was two hours every Saturday. I think my paintings took months to complete. My mother and father appreciated my efforts and hung my paintings with a frame. I continued with my Saturday morning painting classes and each picture was larger and better than the last one.

I was thrilled that a good friend of mine

When I was about 14, my Saturday morning teacher suggested to my parents that I should attend art classes given by the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. My parents made an appointment with the president of the school and I took my latest painting.

He observed it and suggested I enroll in the evening painting class when models were available. My parents agreed to deliver me on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and pick me up at 10 p.m.

On my first night, I entered with my paints and a new canvas. I asked the receptionist where the painting class was located. She directed me to the first door upstairs on the right. I went upstairs THE VIEW and opened the door.

By Herman Sillas There, in the middle of the room, stood a posed nude woman surrounded by adult artists next to their canvas paintings. I closed the door and dashed downstairs to confirm I had the right location. The receptionist confirmed that I was in the right room. I went upstairs again and introduced myself to the teacher. He said to set up where I could and to commence painting. I did and felt that my face turned red every time I looked at the nude lady.

When I was picked up by my parents, they of course wanted to see my painting. I was in the back seat. I said my painting was not very good. My mother insisted on seeing it as my father drove the car. I handed her my painting. She didn’t say anything and showed it to

my dad. Not a word was said on our trip home. I went to bed and figured that my artist career was over. The next morning my father said, “We don’t know that much about art. But if these classes are taken by artists, we agree you can go to these classes.”

My mother said I was to place the nude paintings in my closet out of view. My close buddies came by to view my nude paintings every week as I continued with my art. Eventually, I received a scholarship from the art school. Ultimately, I went to the University of California, Los Angeles and on to its law school. I became a lawyer, but I never quit painting. When the Chicanos became active in the ’60s, I began to represent a lot of them and their teachers. My art background became a way for me to convey to Chicanos, Mexicans and non-Mexicans, the times we were all having to address as young Mexican-Americans. My years as an art student helped me convey on canvas my feelings to our generation and the general audience at the time.

Let your children and grandchildren explore their dreams. My parents did and I thank them for letting me explore art. Every Mother’s Day, I’m reminded of my mother’s decision that had such a positive effect on my life. That’s the view from the Pier.

came to me to protest that your publication allowed me to label the left-leaning liberal Democrats as those who are to blame for the leniency toward the homeless and their behavior. He said that the conservative Catholic Church is who’s to blame and they were in a lawsuit about something or another. He also said that Ronald Reagan was to blame for the current situation of homelessness in our state.

He went on to say that the Santa Ana riverbed was cleared out because the Angels wanted to build a bigger stadium.

But because we are friends, we can have a great discussion and still get along.

My point is that there might be a lot of readers who disagree with me and say that we have bigger issues in San Clemente, and the homeless population is not the highest priority. I agree!

Nuclear waste at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is first and forefront.

Everything else comes second.

Toll road issues go to the bottom of the list, for now.

Safety, there is not enough pedestrian traffic safety. We need more flashing lights and crosswalks.

Another kudos goes out to the sheriff’s deputies in town. I see them questioning transients on a regular basis without a complaint being called in. If you look out-of-place, they have the authority to interrogate you. If there is an issue, then you deserve a free ride.

About two years ago, I made a suggestion that if the city and churches or some organization would take charge, I offered to contribute the first $100, if the homeless would volunteer to get help and work on their problems. That offer still stands today.

I don’t have a solution by any means, but if the state is going to just dump these people anywhere we should have our own plan for San Clemente.

I can’t stay silent in the face of all of the blind hatred of homeless people I see among some in San Clemente. There aren’t any homeless shelters or hospitals for mental illness in South Orange County.

Every community in OC fights tooth and nail against opening any near them, so as a result, the growing homeless population gets shuffled from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. They face public hate, harassment and scam rehab clinics that siphon off their Medicaid.

Having homeless addicts and mentally ill around is dangerous from a crime and public health perspective, but the homeless people themselves are the ones with the least power to do anything about it.

Compassion is clearly too much to ask for, but at least have common sense. Railing against homeless people themselves isn’t going to solve anything. It’s like beating your head against the wall; if they were capable of caring for themselves, they wouldn’t be homeless. No one is so lazy they dream of sleeping on asphalt every night and getting spit on by wealthy beach dwellers.

I read with interest last week your brief article regarding a bill, AB 2796, introduced by State Assemblyman Rocky Chavez of Oceanside. The bill is the most definitive opposition to the proposed SR-241 extension into San Clemente yet seen by any elected public official. Calls to elected officials, other than those already in opposition, regarding their respective positions on the extension through the heart of San Clemente have been met either by silence or obfuscation. Mr. Chavez has stood the test by the language in the bill which would stop the 241 at Oso Parkway, period. Not a lot of mincing of words.

It should be noted that he is a candidate for Congress in the 49th District, which includes San Clemente. He certainly knows how to reach out to his voters. Bravo, Mr. Chavez!

Marlo is reluctant, but eventually gives in and hires 26-year-old free spirit named Tully (Mackenzie Davis).

unniest Housewives of OC, a female comedy group that plays on stereotypes with a variety of hilarious housewives, is coming back to The Coach House at 7 p.m. on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13.

With a handful of characters ranging from ‘Dysfunctional Housewife’ to ‘Hippie Housewife,’ the show is relatable to all families, particularly mothers. Nearing the group’s 10-year anniversary, the performance of Funniest Housewives on Mother’s Day will be a perfect “girls night out,” said Julie Kidd, CEO of Funny Mom Productions and producer of Funniest Housewives.

“Women are funny,” Kidd said. “It’s just one laugh after the other.”

Kidd, who plays the ‘Dysfunctional Housewife,’ said that every show by the Funniest Housewives is unique in that the group of comedians rotates for nearly every show. At the Mother’s Day show, the featured guest housewife is Rita Rudner, who performs comedy regularly in Las Vegas.

In addition to Kidd and Rudner, there are three other housewives: Frances Dilorinzo as ‘Hyperactive Housewife,’ Amber Rose as ‘Curvy Housewife’ and Karen Rontowski as ‘Hippie Housewife.’

“It’s hard to pinpoint what the magic is about the housewives, but it’s such a popular show here in Orange County,” Kidd said. “I think it’s the chemistry of the housewives, or the female comedians (in general), is something spectacular. It’s a great girls night out.”

Also at this show, half of the proceeds from all ticket sales ($25) will go toward Cheyne’s Brain, a foundation that advocates for support and education in the field traumatic brain injury.

STARBUCKS 620 Avenida Pico San Clemente is slated to see its eighth Starbucks erected in the near future. On May 2, the Planning Commission voted to approve the permits for a location at where the old Carrows Restaurant was located.

The existing structure will be demolished to make room for a 2,400-square-foot, drive-through Starbucks that will be built in Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture.

This is not the first time the city has looked at the Carrows location. It almost became an In-N-Out restaurant and a Chick-fil-A restaurant, but City Council members, at that time, were worried overflow traffic would spill onto Avenida Pico, causing problems with the Interstate 5 traffic that commences nearby. This was before the HOV lane-widening project on I-5 was complete.

Since then, the lanes at Pico had been widened and the design of the new structure would be a bit smaller than previous applications, according to city of San Clemente officials. www.sanclementetimes.com

Regardless of Age, Pursue Your Passion

“N

ow that you are retired, what do you do?” is a question I’ve been asked often in the last three and a half years.

My answer is always something like this. “I keep my body moving and my mind active. Those are my top two priorities.”

I was strongly reminded of that answer while reading an article titled, “Why Does Willie Nelson Still Do It?” in the May 2018, online version of Texas Monthly magazine.

Writer Michael Hall included in his article a video interview with Willie Nelson.

I’ve always admired Willie, and after reading Hall’s article—and watching the video—I have even more respect and admiration for him.

But, first, some background.

In August 2015, Willie Nelson, at 82, was scheduled to perform at the Orange County Fair.

My life partner Greta and I and our Dana Point friends, Ron and Lee Cohan, had tickets for the concert at the Pacific ON LIFE AND Amphitheatre. The four LOVE AFTER 50 of us realized it might

We were in our row-two seats; the band’s instruments were in place on the stage. Then, it started raining hard; the show was canceled.

Three months later, the same group— Ron, Lee, Greta and I—attended a Jan. 6, 2016, Willie Nelson and Family concert at the Grove in Anaheim.

On the night of the concert, it rained again, but the Grove is an indoor venue, so we knew the show would go on, although the possibility of a rain cancelation crossed my mind.

Frankly, my expectations about Willie performing were modest. I imagined that his family members, including his sons Micah and Lukas on guitars, and “little sister Bobbie” as Willie calls her, on piano, would be the primary performers and that Willie would sing only a few songs. After all, he was 82.

When the lights dimmed, Willie led his band onto the stage. He was wearing a T-shirt with “Maui” on the front and his usual red headband.

Willie picked up Trigger, the name he’s given to his ancient Martin N-20 classical guitar that he’d had for 47 years—the one with a gaping hole and faded autographs from famous people such as Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings on it. He began with one of his classics, “Whiskey River.” The four of us were pleasantly surprised. Willie

and his band sounded great. Again, I wondered if that would be the last time I’d get to see him perform.

He was on stage nonstop for over 90 minutes. He sang: “Georgia on My Mind;” “On the Road Again;” “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground;” “Crazy;” “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die;” “GoodHearted Woman;” “Always on My Mind;” and about 25 other songs, all of them familiar.

He was gracious and personable. Fans kept tossing cowboy hats on the stage.

Willie would wear the hats for a couple of songs and then toss them to the crowd Frisbee-style. He also threw five headbands to the crowd.

Now, this August, Willie, who turned 85 April 29, (Trigger, the guitar, is now 49, and “baby sister” Bobbie, is 87) and his family are coming to Southern California again. He will be at the Orange County Fair Aug. 10, but we aren’t going to see him there.

Instead, the night before, he is performing at Humphreys by the Bay, a cozy, intimate, outdoor venue cuddled next to yachts in San Diego. Our friends, Ron and Lee, purchased a package that includes dinner, an overnight stay at the hotel and row-two seats. We are going with them.

To make this concert even more special, singer Alison Krauss of the group Union Station is also performing.

I’ve learned to stop wondering if this will be the last time I see Willie perform.

Written on the tickets: “Humphreys/ Rain or Shine.” So, it can rain all it wants that night.

In a Texas Monthly article, Michael Hall writes that Willie says he keeps entertaining because it makes him happy. In the video, Willie adds, “I think that has a lot to do with keeping you alive—keeping busy, doing things and being creative.”

Willie is 85 years of proof of the need to keep our body moving and mind active as we age. He’s an inspiration to a lot of seniors.

Large and In Charge San Clemente powerlifter aims to own national competition

T

hey are massive human beings.

Jake Johns of San Clemente and Kevin Torres push their bodies to the absolute limit in an effort to prove they’re the strongest of their class.

Torres and Johns met while playing football at Saddleback College—Johns was a defensive tackle and Torres was a running back. They both enjoyed working out, and eventually they were inspired by other YouTube and social media sensations who were posting their own powerlifting videos and promoting different products.

Both of them will compete in the Kern U.S. Open of Powerlifting on May 12 and 13 in San Diego as well as the expo to promote products from the company Strength Cartel. Johns is the proprietor of Strength Cartel, a company that produces supplements of Johns’ design as well as apparel.

“Because I’m from San Clemente, I wanted something that had an S and a C in it,” Johns said of his sports a hat with “1903” on it: 19 representing S in the alphabet and 03 representing C. “The contest for powerlifting is a max of three lifts,” Johns said. “So your first one is a max of squats and you get three attempts to get your best lift. The next is bench press and then deadlift. It started out as invite-only, like the top five in the world, but they opened it up to more people.”

Johns took first place in the competition last year and is seeking success again.

He’s currently ranked sixth in the world in his open weight class and Torres is ranked second in the 165 division, but he’s trying to move up to the 181 weight class.

There are various federations throughout powerlifting, and Johns has world and national records in respective disciplines.

He’s ranked sixth all-time for super-heavyweights.

“We saw other people getting the whole Instagram thing going and everything, and we thought, shoot, we could do that stuff too,” Torres said. “People putting pictures and videos, now it’s so easy through social media.”

Torres is a personal trainer at Motiv8 Performance Athletic Center in Foothill Ranch—where both of them train—and Johns works through his supplement company, which includes pre-workout and post-workout nutrients.

The Drive The Kern U.S. Open in San Diego is one of the premier competitions Johns and Torres prepare for each year. It pits some of the world’s most elite competitors against one another.

“I’m going to go down and see how I fare this year,” Johns said. We’re competing in two different classes this year, but I’m trying to go down a weight class.”

The mental hurdle is one that each of the competitors face. Powerlifting is not a team competition.

“I guess you have to have your training in mind, you have to be confident in your training,” Johns said. “For me, I try to clear my head and just go through the lift. It’s kind of like how I approach sports, replaying the same play in your head over and over, just relying on what you’ve prepared for.”

He may make it look easy, but after even one max lift, that’s a day’s work for Johns.

The competitions are intense because they have to max out on several disciplines.

With all that stress on the body, Johns said the crew typically tapers down its workout sessions the closer they get to competition.

“There’s no certain thing that I do. I just try to visualize the lift over and over,” Johns said. “The technique that we use, you really have to focus on that. For a long time, I know myself and Kevin, we would just come in and try to lift. We were already really strong, so we tried to lift

as heavy as we could. But to be like elite, next level, there’s a lot of technique.”

Motiv8 Performance Center is a unique gym with all of the equipment they need to get in peak performance.

“There’s a lot of little things that play into getting to an elite level,” Torres added. “Even resting more, getting a good night’s sleep, which will help you get ready for that big lift. For the big competition like this, we take like seven to eight days of really light lifting. In the gym, we squat and work out and then we go home.

But at the competition you have to squat, deadlift and bench, so it’s way harder in the competition. You’re pushing your body to the absolute limits.”

The competitions are strict. Powerlifters must get to that maximum lift or they can drop down lower quickly.

“Pretty much you can’t mess up; you’ve got to have a really good day,” Torres said.

When they don’t have a competition on the horizon, Johns said they get at least six days of work outs in each week.

“It’ll be a battle,” Johns said, adding he thinks that he should do well. “It just depends on if I can perform on that day. I think I have a great chance of getting first.”

Torres said the preparation is very similar to team sports he played in high school and college.

“Like any given Sunday, anything can happen,” he said. “The No. 1 guy could get hurt in the very first lift, so you just can’t

really be worried about the competition; you just have to be worried about yourself and do the best you can.”

The Prep The nutrition factors are not like bodybuilding where competitors have to monitor every morsel they consume.

“We don’t really count calories and things like that,” Torres said. “For me, it’s like if I eat four meals a day, that’s like maintaining my weight. If I want to gain weight, I have to start forcing that fifth meal. It’s got to be consistent. It can’t be where you do one week with a fifth meal.

It has to be every day.”

The two competitors are very aware of their body and when they gain and lose weight. It’s imperative to their success.

“It’s basic stuff. We try to eat more proteins rather than carbs and fats,” Johns said. “We don’t do it for looks. We do it for performance.” SC

Pak Takes Second Place at CIF-SS Regional San Clemente junior Alex Pak shot a score of 67, 5-under par, to take second place at the CIF-SS Boys Golf Southern Individual Regional on Monday, May 7 at the Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Pak sank six birdies with one bogey and finished ahead of 125 other players.

Pak moves on to the CIF-SS Individual Championships on Thursday, May 17 at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara. The top 28 individuals will advance to the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional on May 24 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Girls Runners Pick Up Four Wins at League Finals The Triton girls took individual league titles in short and long distances at the South Coast League Finals on Friday, May 4 at Trabuco Hills High School.

Junior Emilie Bennett took wins in the 100-meter and 200-meter, senior Chandler Horton took the 3,200-meter and sophomore Hana Catsimanes grabbed the 1,600-meter.

girls to a third-place finish overall.

Bennett set personal records in both of her wins. She ran 12.15 seconds in the 100 and 24.75 seconds in the 200.

Bennett also helped the Tritons to third place in the 4x100 relay (48.95 seconds) with senior Rylee Kerr and juniors Lila Ord and Siena Keck.

Horton won the 3,200 at 11:16.49, and Catsimanes won the 1,600 at 5:06.20.

Kerr took third in the 400 at 57.79 seconds.

Freshman Natalie Vissman earned second place in high jump with a clearance of five feet, one inch.

On the boys side, senior Jack Shippy grabbed a pair of silvers in the 100 and long jump. Shippy ran a personal-record 10.85 seconds in the 100 and jumped 21 feet, one inch in the long jump.

Sophomore Burke Dambly took second place in the triple jump at 43 feet, 4.5 inches.

an Clemente boys swimming coach Thomas Dollar had not seen a league championship in all of his time at San Clemente High School.

The Triton alum entered the school as a freshman in the fall of 2004 with San Clemente’s last boys swimming league title in the spring of 2004. The San Clemente girls last won league in 2003.

That all changed in a big way on Friday, May 4 at El Toro High School.

San Clemente won the boys and girls Sea View League swimming titles on all three levels—varsity, junior varsity and open—to pull off the full aquatics sweep following league titles for both water polo teams in the fall and winter for the first time in school history.

“Our victory is really a credit to a culmination of our city’s aquatic culture,” Dollar said. “All aspects of San Clemente’s aquatic lifestyle are represented in our swimmers, and it’s great to see their skills put to work and rewarded.”

It was only the second time in school history that both the boys and girls won league titles in the same season with the first in 2002.

The boys took the title over Laguna Hills, 566-548, and the girls beat San Juan Hills, 476-437, to complete the feat.

The Triton boys had a huge day with four wins and 13 podium finishes.

Senior Weston Rowan was the star with two individual victories in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke.

Rowan also took a leg in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle medley.

Rowan is seeded third for the 200-yard individual medley in CIF-SS Division 1 and seeded fourth for the 100-yard backstroke.

CIF-SS Division 1 prelims are Thursday, May 10 with finals on Saturday, May 12.

Both events are at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.

Senior Boston Williams also picked up an individual win with a time of 46.20 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Williams also took second in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.21 seconds. He is seeded seventh in the 100 and eighth in the 50 at CIF-SS Division 1.

Senior Taylor Bautista and Juniors Spencer Burress, James Garnette and Dorian Johnson are also headed to CIF with podium finishes at league as well as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Colin Snyder, Luke Christl, Keith Christl and Reily Herbert.

On the girls side, it was a freshman with the lone individual win.

Stella Copeland took down the 200-yard freestyle field in 1:53.63 for the gold. Copeland also grabbed a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:06.36.

Junior Daisy Frauenzimmer, sophomores Katie Faris and Grace Pelkey and freshman Lang Csira each earned individual podium finishes to advance to CIF-SS prelims. Freshman Alexandria Higginson also advanced to CIF with the 400yard freestyle relay team. The 200-yard freestyle relay team also advanced. SC

Softball Finishes Third, Waits for Playoffs San Clemente came into Tuesday, May 8 with a shot at the league title, but the Tritons left the field against Laguna Hills in third place.

Laguna Hills broke a 1-1 tied in the fi fth inning with a RBI single and a three-run home run to defeat San Clemente, 5-1, in a South Coast League game at San Clemente High School.

Junior Sydney Kowalski scored the lone Triton run with a home run to straightaway center in the third inning.

Aliso Niguel (18-7, 6-2) claimed the league title. Laguna Hills (14-7, 5-3) finished second after sweeping the season series with San Clemente (12-9, 5-3). All three teams earned CIF-SS playoff bids with San Clemente slotted in Division 2.

Playoff brackets will be released on Monday, May 14.

San Clemente’s boys and girls swim teams both celebrate league titles at the Sea View League Finals on Friday, May 4 at El Toro High School. The boys won their first title since 2004, and the girls won their first since 2003.

The Can’t-Miss Summer Surf Photography Workshop Legendary surf photographer to host workshop in Mexico

A

nybody can take a picture. If you’ve got a smartphone in your pocket, you can fire away until your hard drive’s full. But to compose and make photographs that tell a story, convey emotion and capture the essence of a person or place, that’s art.

For over half of a century, Art Brewer has been making photographs that have moved the surf world. One of the first photographers to shoot for SURFER Magazine back in the ‘60s, he grew up in Laguna Beach capturing surfing’s early golden era. He spent time in Yosemite studying with Ansel Adams and has traversed the planet with all the best surfers in tow. He’s been published everywhere and satisfied big-time corporate clients.

Now, he’s paying it all forward.

In recent years, Brewer, along with co-collaborators JP Van Swae and Joanna Miriam Valente, have teamed up with the School of Visual Arts in New York City to

offer workshops in the art of surf photography.

“I had to figure so much of it out on my own when I was young, when this opportunity came up I saw it as a great chance to share everything I’ve learned over the years and help those aspiring photographers not just take better photos, but also how to manage the other aspects of the profession,” said Brewer from his Dana Point studio.

Some years back, Brewer was in New York giving a presentation in a space right next to Carnegie Hall. A few months later, he received a phone call from Malcolm Lightner at the School of Visual Arts inquiring if he’d be interested in putting a workshop together. Brewer then reached out to Van Swae and Miriam Valente, who also live in Dana Point and have spent considerable time working and training under him. Collectively, they hosted their first workshop in Puerto Rico. It was a success, and in subsequent years they’ve landed in Bali, Indonesia and Nicaragua.

“This year we’re going to Salina Cruz in Mexico,” Brewer said. “We try to go to locations that provide great waves, but are also rich in culture and have a lot of other aspects that make for interesting subject matter. We also team up with surf talent that can provide the photographers with the surf action. Whether it’s shooting water or from land or pulled back lineups or whatever, we try and provide a lot of eye candy to encourage creativity.”

Home to some of North America’s best sand-bottom right points, Punta Conejo Surf Camp will play host to the week-long workshop from Aug.12-17. While a lot of the inspiration behind the curriculum is inspired by surf, it’s not strictly for aspiring surf photographers.

“One of the things that was really

important to me when we were putting this together was to make sure that our students left with a comprehensive understanding of the photography business,” Brewer said. “We go over trademarking images and how to protect your rights as a photographer. We talk about the importance of making connections and how all of that works in relation to getting your images used in magazines or commercial projects.

“JP and Joana both bring a lot of experience and expertise to the table and together we’re able to make this a really all-encompassing week of study and work,” Brewer continued. “In some instances, we have students from around the world coming back for multiple workshops because we’re able to provide them with all of this important information that isn’t readily available and they don’t teach you in school.”

While it’s still three months away, Brewer’s workshop fills up quick. There are still a handful of spaces left in the fiveday course, but he cautions that anybody who’s interested in getting involved do so sooner rather than later.

“The tuition covers the workshop, a stay at Punta Conejo, meals, guides and all that stuff. We make sure all of the details are ironed out before we go so we can make sure everything goes smoothly when we’re there and we can really focus our time and energy on getting work done,” says Brewer.

We’re living in an image-based world and for those that are keen to make the most of that fact and still keep their feet in the sand, a sprint down to Salina Cruz with Brewer and company could well be worth the time and expense.

hen last we saw Dana Point’s Bella Kenworthy she was on her way up the mountain. She still appears to be well on her way to the top.

Coming off of duel runner-up finishes in the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Southwest Division season finale in Ventura, Bella’s been on quite the roll. She recently won the Western Surfing Association’s under 12 and under 14 girls divisions. While that would be reason enough to celebrate, Bella did it by sweeping every event all season long.

“She didn’t lose a heat all year long. I told her at the beginning of the year that if she didn’t drop a heat all year, we could go on a surf trip to Indonesia. It was just something to motivate her…then she actually did it,” said her father, Jason.

Bella also finished second in a recent USA Surfing Prime, which is no small feat either given the level of talent and pressure of the Prime events.

When it comes to riding a skateboard, she’s not just rolling around the block. Bella’s fresh off a win in the under 14 division at the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic. SC
