E

very spring is exciting as we make plans and preparations for a new summer season, but 2018 has reached a new level of anticipation as we look forward to our 70th anniversary. The communities at Big Spring and High Trails are more than 90% complete for this summer and we know that our campers and staff will bring enthusiasm, humor, fun, and an immense amount of positive energy to our 6,000 acres in the mountains.

We are also super excited about our gigantic alum reunion in August. Alums are currently signed up from every camp decade from the 50’s to the recent 2000’s and it promises to be a remarkable celebration. To sign up, you can go to the alum section of our website or use the handy-dandy form that is included in this Alum News. If you would like to check out who is coming so far, we have a list in the alum section of our website.

A third reason this promises to be an exceptional year is that we will be inaugurating our brand new Jumping Juniper cabin at High Trails and can’t wait to see it filled with happy campers. So many of you contributed to the building of this cabin with your donations over the past few years, and we are truly grateful.

It is also very reassuring to realize that, as we approach our 70th summer, the mission and vision established by Sandy and Laura in 1948 are more important and relevant in today’s world than ever before. Young people need access to the natural world—they are strengthened by the chance to sleep under the stars, walk through the forests, and climb the mountains.

Children learn important social and emotional skills in the nurturing community at camp—resilience, perseverance, empathy, collaboration, and many more. And they have a chance to put away their smartphones for a month and explore the joy of sharing real adventures with peers and supportive adults. All of us at camp feel fortunate to be a part of such a rewarding and transformative educational journey.

Dear Alums, Snickerdoodles, Red Velvet Cake, Chippy Dippy Bars. Got your attention didn’t I? The iconic desserts of camp are a big part of our memories .

Do your memories include the aroma of Chocolate Chip Cookies coming from the bakery ovens? Or the S’mores or Banana Boats after the great meal shared around the campfire on a campout? How about platters of Red Velvet Cake passed around the table with all that gooey white icing? Speaking of gooey, remember Rip-and-Tear Cinnamon Bread before dawn as you started your ascent of that fourteener?

Vickie Martin currently presides over the bakery at High Trails, keeping the cookie jar filled for anyone who has an excuse to be in the bakery. She’s turned out desserts, cookies, pies, cakes, cobblers, breads, and rolls for all three seasons since 2003. She tells me that Chocolate Chippers top the list of favorite cookies. Of course, she makes many versions – banana, pumpkin, oatmeal, original Toll House, and chocolate/white chocolate. Also, her signature Gingersnaps, Lemon Bars, Snickerdoodles, Cherry Turnovers, Meringues, Rice Krispie Treats, and Oatmeal Butterscotch are high on the list of faves.

The ladies in the bakery have a special place in the hearts of many alums.

prehistoric : pre-1974 TRIP FRIENDLY (BS 67-73) recently joined the Board of Trustees of Midland School, which shares the values and spirit of Sanborn Western Camps.

DIANE BROWNLEE (HT 70-73) Ginther and husband, Paul, are looking forward to retirement. They will be moving in the Fall of 2018 to their mountain home outside of Asheville, NC, to start a retirement of hiking, volunteering, watching the sunset from their deck, more hiking, etc! They will first come to the Sanborn reunion in August to give those hiking legs a real test, not often found in Kansas where they now live.

RON (BS Staff 72) and SANDY OLSON FEDERSPIEL (HT Staff 64-65, 72) are living in Bend, Oregon, and enjoying grandchildren Laurel, 5, and Eli, 3. “We are in our 49th year of marriage and it has been a very good ride.”

GAIL GALVANI (HT Staff 65) West is enjoying a busy retirement in Frisco, TX. She is volunteering, participating in clubs and the church Pre-School Board, as well as singing in the Frisco Chorale and church choir. She loves spending time with her five grandchildren, including Poppy Mae Atkinson, born last August.

CATE NOYES (HT 69-71) Boddington and husband, Tim, are “enjoying life” in Colorado Springs. Cate is very involved politically, designed a collection of resistance posters last year, finished a novel, and is learning to play piano and produce podcasts.

Tim plays ice hockey, is busy on the UCCS Arts and Historic Preservation Alliance boards, manages their

AirBnB cottage, and crafts furniture in his all-hand-tools workshop. Son, HENRY, (BS 92-98; Staff 02-03) works as a carpenter and does interior construction/remodeling in Denver.

He also creates delicate jewelry and unique sculptures. WILL (BS 92-98) is an actor and stuntman in Los Angeles.

MARY (HT 95-98) owns and operates the 35-year-old famous locals bar, The Talk of the Town, in Crested Butte.

SARAH “BOOTSIE” (HT 96-04) is the manager of the Dogwood Cocktail Cabin in Bend, OR, and maintains a line of her unique copper, silver and stone jewelry in three shops and online at DesignsbyBoots.

KEN WASHBURN (BS Staff 58) and wife, Sally, returned from Colorado to Missouri in 2008 to be near their children and fourteen grandchildren. They stay busy in retirement with tutoring, Meals on Wheels, cycling, pickleball and golf.

LEO GROSS (BS Staff 68) sent some memories: “I had the great privilege of being a camp counselor the summer of 1968. I was a counselor in Quandary with the best boys imaginable.

We had so much fun, and I guess I just want to say emphatically that the summer of 1968 has thus far been the most enjoyable summer of my life. I especially remember the gentleness of Sandy, and Jerry’s ability to make sure all ran well and smoothly, and the tasty, tasty meals especially the daily homemade buns made by the bakers in the kitchen. I still remember the horse assigned to me. Her name was Sandpiper. Loved that horse. Loved everything about Sanborn Western Camp. I remember especially waking up all five of my boys about 2 in the morning, then sneaking to the the girls’ camp, hiding the clanger which

was attached to their bell, getting into their kitchen and helping ourselves to all kinds of good food, and loosened the covers of the salt and pepper shakers. The next morning at our camp’s gathering, Sandy mentioned what happened and he was not very happy about it, but the boys and I managed to keep the identity of the perpetrators all a secret---until now I guess.” (ED note: Leo, you will be glad to know that the Statute of Limitations has run out on your misdeed) Leo lives in Aurora. He and wife Lorraine Kraft, who passed away in 2001, have three sons and three grandsons.

ANNIE GARRETSON (HT 65-71; Staff 72-77, 82-83) spent an afternoon in March with our year-round staff teaching (or re-teaching) classic camp songs, some of which have strayed a bit from the original tunes over the years.

She is also working on a CD of camp songs which will be available at our August reunion!

GRETCHEN HUND (HT 72-73; HTOEC Staff 79) is still working at the Pacific Northwest National Lab on nuclear nonproliferation (making sure goods aren’t diverted and end up in places like North Korea). Her husband, Ted, is an organic herb farmer.

Gretchen has two daughters—Robin is a lawyer and Ali is doing a renewable energy masters at the Design School at Stanford.

THERESA MARIE RHYNE (HT 67-71) is excited that her book “Applying Color Theory to Digital Media and Visualization” has become a bestseller (Top 25) in the physics-professional reference category.

• CHARLIE SCHWEIGHAUSER (BS Staff 56) and wife, Barb, traveled to Vienna, Austria, in June to see five operas at the Staatsoper then headed to Santa Fe in July for five more operas.

They are also season ticket holders at Lyric Opera in Chicago, so added eight more performances in the spring and fall. In addition to attending operas, Charlie taught Huckleberry Finn and 1984 at the Pleasant Plains Library and gave many talks about the August total solar eclipse. He and son, BOB SCHWEIGHAUSER (BS 70-76; Staff 77, 79), enjoyed a fishing trip to Alaska and brought back 132 pounds of silver salmon fillets.

Brooks Range and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Gates of the Arctic National Park. Their other big adventure was a 5-week trip to Nepal where they spent 14 days on the Annapurna Circuit Trek and rode elephants in Chitwan National Park. They also took a few river trips including through the Grand Canyon.

Darcie and husband, Barrney, spend summers in Copper Mountain, CO, and winter in Tucson, AZ. They are active hikers, skiers, cyclers, and tennis players.

KATE “KASSIE” MARSHALL (HT 70-71, 73) “had a long and busy year” renovating her new condo on the Plaza in Kansas City. It is finally done and she loves it! Son, DAVID KATZ (BS BS 06; Staff 14), graduated from Tulane with a BS in Linguistics and Psychology and now works in marketing in New Orleans. Daughter, EMILY KATZ (HT 04, 06-07; Staff 10-13), completed her second summer in Moab, Utah, on staff with Outward Bound, leading groups up canyons and down rivers.

Son, Nick, is enjoying San Francisco and working hard as an analyst at Eventbrite.

Warren and JUDY SMITH (HT 6569; Staff 70, 74-75) Schoedel headed south to Arizona (from their home in Buena Vista, CO) early this year to attend the Jerome Film Festival near Sedona. Judy contributed to a short Western film called “Common Threads” which is playing at the festival. Son, TAD SCHOEDEL (BS 96-01), finished his ophthalmology fellowship program for glaucoma at the Henry Ford Vision Clinic in Detroit.

In August he began his professional career at the Vistar Eye Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Daughter, HEIDI SCHOEDEL (HT 96-03; Staff 09-10), completed her 500+ hour yoga teacher training course in July in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. She is now certified to teach many different kinds of yoga classes to a variety of students.

ROB FRIESEN (BS 62; Staff 65-68) retired last summer after 41 years at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the whole Friesen family gathered to help celebrate the event. CONNIE McWILLIAMS (HT Staff 66-68) FRIESEN claims that she has “tolerated Rob’s increased presence around the house very well.” Rob has maintained a connection to work as Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, and Connie continues to create beautiful photographs and art greeting cards and maintains a lovely garden.

RICH BUCHOLZ (BS 62, 64-66) continues his clinical interest in functional neurosurgery with a large clinical practice dealing with brain stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease. His research interests center around several startups dealing with everything from vagal stimulation for rheumatoid arthritis to working with a team of medical and engineering studies to improve postop neurological monitoring. Wife, Kathy, is busy with a variety of projects researching the development of alcohol problems and disorders across the lifespan, writing papers, teaching graduate and medical students psychiatric epidemiology, and mentoring fellows. Rich and Kathy especially enjoy reunions with their children and grandchildren.

dark ages : 1974-1991 JEN SCHOFIELD (HT 85-90; Staff 93-95) Law received a promotion this year and is now the HR Director for Vail Mountain, while husband, Pete, continues to support Law Co. Daughter, Jacqueline, 15, has her driving permit and has started speech and debate in addition to skiing and golf. EMILY (HT 14-18), 12 continues soccer and hockey and added volleyball too! The Laws enjoyed trips to San Diego and Sanibel last year, as well as starting the college search in Washington, DC. SUZANNE GEPSON (HT 86-90) Hagen and family had a “fun year with lots of adventures!” They visited the Olive & Sinclair Chocolate factory with their Nashville cousins, enjoyed time in beautiful northern Minnesota with lots of Hagen relatives, exhibited genuine silliness with Burnham cousins at all family gatherings, hiked & boated in Door County, and explored mid-coast Maine with Suz’s best friend, NANCY TALBOT (HT 84-86; Staff 92). Suz and husband, Chris, have two sons: Timmy, 8, loves 2nd grade, dancing and playing piano; Will, 5, loves art, playing with Timmy, and learning a million things at preschool every day.

JIM (BS Staff 77-80) and STACEY SCHAFFERT (HT Staff 77, 79-80) STREET have both retired from teaching. They moved to Centennial, CO, from Kodiak, Alaska, and are trying to get used to living in a city again.

They still have their family cabin near Florissant, which Jim claims is a “lifesaver”. Stacey works for Visiting Angels and has three clients not far from their home. Jim keeps busy updating their house, helping with his mother, and other family things. Son, Mike, is married and doing cyber security for Ratheon in NC. “We keep hoping for

grandkids but no luck yet.”

LAURA FRIESEN (HT 83-88; Staff 90-94) continued her art studies in New York last summer, passionately participating in drawing marathons and creating large-scale landscape paintings. She returned to Denver in the fall where she balances work with yoga, photography, and drawing.

CARRIE BROWN (HT Staff 86,88)Wolf sent a newsy Christmas letter about her children. ELLIE (HT 07), a sophomore at the University of Colorado, is interning with CU Gold, offering leadership training programs for campus organizations, and plays ultimate frisbee and broomball. TYE (BS 09) is attending William and Mary in Virginia, tutors at a local middle school and debates on the WM team.

Last summer he spent 4 weeks in Guinea with his best friend and family.

OLIVIA (HT 11-12, 14-15, 17) “found her happy place” as a JC at High Trails last summer. “In addition to school and skiing, she worked at a chocolate shop all fall—reaching her dream job at age 15.” In January she headed to New Zealand to attend school for 6 months as an exchange student. Carrie and her family live in Vail, CO, where husband, Dan, is an attorney.

JULIE HESS (HT Staff 81-82) Farnham and family moved to a new home in Colorado Springs last year and are enjoying it even though they are rarely home. Husband, Stu, still works for the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command as a civilian and travels about 60% of the year. Julie was able to join him in Norway and Hawaii last year. Son, BEN (BS 99), is currently stationed in Corpus Christi, TX, as an instructor pilot but soon will

move to Norfolk, VA, and join the USS Eisenhower carrier. Nate graduated last summer with a Masters in Sports Administration at Northwestern University and now works for Sponsor United. Nate has a daughter, Halie Elizabeth, 1 ½, and Julie and Stu are loving their grandparent role. Daughter, Elizabeth, is pursuing a PhD in Marine Biology at Victoria University in New Zealand. Julie and Stu have visited her twice and are looking forward to future trips.

RODNEY (BS Staff 88-90) and LAURA HITE (HT Staff 91-93) HARGRAVE did NOT write a Christmas letter this year because “Bragging about the kid’s accomplishments is more and more a shameless act of child exploitation.” So they didn’t mention that daughter, Lilly, traveled to Belize on a mission trip, graduated from high school, had a summer job, and was on the Dean’s List for her first semester of college at Texas Tech. Or that son, Henry, was confirmed in their church, became an Eagle Scout, earned college credit in his junior year in high school and got a job. They also didn’t say that Laura is now the Director of the Covenant Presbyterian Church preschool, overseeing 17 teachers and 120 students “Yes, she’s a big deal, but wouldn’t it sound just a little too prideful to document that in a cheesy Christmas letter when you could just see it on LinkedIn?” And they really didn’t say much about Rodney except “Hair loss. Hearing loss. Lost the car in the grocery store parking lot.”

MEG VOGT (HT 76-79) lives in Portland, Oregon, and has had a dog daycare business since 2004. Her Magic Bus for dogs looks pretty fun!

KRISTY BORNHOEFT (HT 8687, 89; Staff 93) Sands and husband, Craig, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary last year with a vacation to Kauai. Craig works in commercial real estate and Kristy writes her blog at kristysands.com and keeps up with the activities of their three daughters.

EMILY (HT 13) plays field hockey as a freshman in high school; Katy, a seventh grader, also loves field hockey and soccer; ASHLEY (HT 17) made the 5th grade basketball team and also loves to sing. The Sands live in Denver.

The Rowley/ Middleton family live in Big Sky, MT, where Taylor is the General Manager of the Big Sky Resort.

SHERI BONE (HT Staff 8082; TNP Staff 07) Fedorchak and husband, Rich, continue to enjoy living in Estes Park, CO. JOE “JODY” JENKINS (BS 74-76; Staff 77-79, 92) and wife, Stacey Nakasian, are grateful for the many friends and family who supported them following the loss of their son, SAM (BS 11-13), in a skateboarding accident at Swarthmore College last spring.

Daughter, MADELINE (HT 08-10; Staff 13,15), is working as a paralegal at Peckar & Abramson in Washington, D.C. and preparing for the LSAT. Daughter, NORA (HT 16,18) began her freshman year at La Salle Academy in Providence, RI, was elected vice-president of her class, and joined the freshman cross country team. The Jenkins live in North Kingstown, RI. GEORGINA BLISS (HT 78-79) Marshall and husband, Rick, live in Rock Hall, MD. “Our place is rustic and there is always a pipe rupturing.. but it’s very pretty here. I’m now working at Washington College in Career Development. I love it!”

JULIE HARDESTY (HT 69-76; Staff 78-79, 82) Ferman and husband, Gil, moved from Los Angeles to Santa Fe and Julie is now bringing her expertise as a Matchmaker and Dating Coach to New Mexico—she has over 1180 marriages to her credit. Julie and Gil are both outdoor enthusiasts and love living in Santa Fe. BRIDGET GILBERTSON (HT 81; Staff 82-85) Russo and husband, Chris, live in New York City. Their daughter, Amelia, graduated from high school in 2017 and is a freshman at Northwestern. Son, Christopher, is a sophomore at Princeton.

Laura and Joe are both avid bird watchers and met through the local Audubon Society. The minister, a long-time friend of the Legett family, and the groom both wore cowboy boots.

Son, Dean, 12, is active in the student council, plays the bass in the Roaring Fork Youth Orchestra, and dances with Ballet Folklorico. Andy, 10, plays baseball and soccer, is learning to play the marimba, and is creating a school project on the history of baseball.

RICK FRIESEN (BS 96-99; Staff 0205) finished his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Hospital Colorado last June and moved to Seattle to work at the children’s hospital there.

He and Nicole Poole, a pediatric infectious disease doctor, have announced their engagement.

PAT PERRY (BS 89-96; Staff 98, 00-05, 14-17) transitioned into a new teaching position at an innovative outdooreducation based school called School in the Woods near Colorado Springs.

Brother, PHIL PERRY (BS 88-93; Staff 95-96, 99-00, 03) is with Wells Fargo Bank in Denver and his wife, Katy, teaches at Cornerstone Montessori.

Their most important role, however, is as Dad and Mom for Lucas, 6, and Jacob, 3.

JOSH WINSTOCK (BS 92-93) is living in Nashville, TN, and works for a food service company that manages kitchens for private schools across the country. He and his wife have two children.

ELLY BUCHOLZ (HT 97-02; Staff 05) is chief resident in plastic surgery at Saint Louis University. She will graduate in June and move on to a fellowship in reconstructive surgery in Kansas City.

ETHAN BUCHOLZ (BS 99, 02-05) and his wife, Catherine, are living in Flagstaff. Catherine works for the Grand Canyon Association where she is involved in the planning for the Centennial Celebration of the Grand Canyon in 2019. Ethan is working on his PhD thesis in forestry.

THE BIG THARPS (“Anita Dasi” ANN THARP (HT 89-95), JIM“Bozo” THARP (BS 91-98), JULIA “Jujubee” LEGRAND (HT Staff 99-02), “Wild” WILLIAM THARP (BS 93-99) and friends were excited to visit the ranch last July for adventures with future campers, Luca and Aria Tharp. Activities included surviving rainstorms while camping at Potts, climbing A-Bluff, surprise-visiting cousins KELSEY (HT 15-18) and ETHAN MILLER (BS 13-18), climbing the tree house, enjoying spectacular sunsets and skylarking (with glow-sticks and lasers). They can’t wait to see everyone at the 70th reunion!

TAYLOR WATSON (HT 99-05) lives in San Francisco where she is a corporate communications professional at the Abernathy MacGregor Group.

She works with several client teams to manage financial public relations and investor communications for publiclytraded companies. In particular, her team advises companies on their communications and investor relations needs ahead of a planned IPO. Prior to Abernathy she interned at Brunswick Group, a corporate and financial communications firm in New York City.

CLAIRE DONOHUE (HT 90-92, 94) works for Save the Children and spent much of 2017 in the Middle East including Yemen, Jordan, and Turkey.

She also managed to work in some visits in the US with family and friends.

New Jumping Juniper is Now Open

S

tudents in our High Trails Outdoor Education Center program are now living in a brand new Jumping Juniper cabin. (Historic Note: For the first few years of High Trails, the cabin we now call Jumping Juniper was called Pooh Corner) Last November, immediately after the last week of the HTOEC program, a machine which looked like a T-Rex demolished the old cabin, which had been in service since High Trails opened in 1962. We did, however, save the historic moss-rock fireplace from the original cabin, and over the winter, built an entirely new cabin around it.

Designed by alum architect Dan Miller, the new cabin has many upgraded features while maintaining the rustic look and feel of the original cabin. Large windows and elevated ceilings in the bunk rooms provide a light and airy environment and a new outdoor patio provides a fun outdoor space for cabin gatherings. The bathroom is tiled and includes state-of-the-art fixtures and plumbing.

The cabin is ADA compliant and has two large private bathrooms as well as the normal shower and toilet stalls. It also has a fire suppression system and meets all 2018 codes. Our school groups are loving it, and we can’t wait to welcome our Sanborn Junior campers to their new home on June 10.

We are extremely grateful to all the alums who contributed to COEC to make this project possible. Special thanks to the estate of Bob Bucholz, and to Dan and Ashley Miller, Bill and Edie Miller, and Caroline and Jim Tharp who donated all of the windows and doors for the new cabin.

WARD LAWRENCE (BS 53-57; Staff 58) February 28, 1941--February 6, 2018

Ward was born in Wichita and earned business and law degrees from the University of Kansas. He spent the majority of his working career applying his legal and entrepreneurial skills to commercial real estate development.

Ward enjoyed an active retirement pursuing his love for golf in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and also in the deserts of Arizona. He loved road racing his Porsche 911 Turbo and serving as captain of two different boats while sailing in the Bahamas. Ward and wife, Jody, moved to Sun City West, AZ, in 2005.

• Ward is survived by his wife Jody and three children: daughter TAMMY LAWRENCE (HT 75) McLemore, son MIKE (BS 76) in Wichita, and step-son Dan and his wife Misty in Oklahoma City; sister Gretchen in St. George, Utah; six grandchildren: Melissa, SARAH McLEMORE (HT 08), Matthew, Greta, Ben and Aaron; and great granddaughter Elizabeth. A loving husband, father, grandfather, companion and friend, Ward will be remembered for his commitment to faith, family, friends, food and fun.

on’t worry! It is not too late to sign up for this rare and amazing event. We are building a waiting list for housing at The Nature Place, but there is still plenty of room at Big Spring, High Trails, and the camping out option.

Imagine rolling through the iconic aspen grove on the road into camp, knowing that you CAN be a camper again for 3 glorious days. You can choose from all kinds of adventurous activities like rock climbing, mountain climbing, bike riding, and horseback riding. You can decide to hike to Top of the World, Fishcreek, the Bat Caves or any of the other beautiful places on the ranch you remember so well.

If you are happier with a more sedentary program you can choose short, gentle walks, crafts, van tours to various places, or even sitting on the front porch talking with a friend. There are no counselors roaming the woods to tell you that you need to be a certain place at a certain time! (There are also no counselors who will tell you to brush your teeth or take a shower, but we hope you will.)

And, by the way, for the reunion, Big Spring and High Trails are NOT two separate camps.

Meals will be delicious, as always, with plenty of home-cooked foods, those famous rolls from the bakery, and the mouth-watering desserts you remember—snickerdoodles, chippy dippy bars, red velvet cake and more. And the dinners will include a “happy hour” with adult bug juice.

The great thing about the reunion is that you will be surprised by how many new friends you make, including people from other eras—it is CAMP, after all!

The Dreamers loved being in the woods & in the snow

• DANARIA “DANI” FARRIS (HT 88-94; Staff 9901) McCoy provided a “priceless” experience for 60 sixth graders from the Rocky Mountain Dreamer Class in Longmont, CO, by providing the funding and organization for this group to attend High Trails Outdoor Education Center in late March.

• The mission of the “I Have a Dream Foundation” is “to motivate and empower children from low-income communities to reach their education and career goals by providing a long-term intervention program of mentoring, tutoring, and cultural enrichment.” Dani immediately contacted us and the head of the Rocky Mountain Dreamer Class, making all the arrangements for their three-day outdoor education experience.

The experience was a huge success. Our HTOEC staff loved working with this group and the students and teachers reported that “It was AWESOME!!! This experience was priceless.”

Thank-you, Dani, for making a difference.

Dani works for NewMark Merrill Mountain States, a company that owns and manages shopping centers, including several in Colorado. Through her company, she was given $10,000 to donate to any charitable organization she wished.

Dani, who had already been volunteering with the “I Have a Dream Foundation of Boulder County” knew what she wanted to do.

The 2018 summer will be our 70th in operation, so we are celebrating with a massive, stupendous, exciting and fun reunion from August 16th-18th (see previous page). This partnership allows the dollars donated to our scholarship fund to support the camp experience for twice as many outstanding young people.

I

n 1996, Sanborn Western Camps had the honor of being selected as an associate camp of the John Austin Cheley Foundation (JACF) – a public charity with a mission to change kids’ lives by providing camperships to high-quality summer camps.

Our community is stronger for this relationship. We have benefitted from the diversity these campers provide, from their enthusiasm and energy, and from the lifelong friendships which are formed. And, we have had the immense satisfaction of playing a sometimes transformational role in their lives.

We have welcomed 52 campers from the Foundation in the past 3 summers alone, but 2017 was a milestone summer – marking the 200th campership awarded to a Sanborn camper by JACF! This represents a large investment in our community - resulting in untold impact upon the lives of those fortunate enough to have grown and developed at Big Spring and High Trails.

Our ties with JACF run deep, our relationship is thriving, and as a result wonderful children whose families could not otherwise afford it have been able to experience the magic

I

f you are reading this, there is a good chance you had some powerful moments that connected you to the Sanborn camp experience in memorable, transformational ways. That, plus Jerry and the office staff are remarkably good at keeping up with address changes when those birthday cards get returned.

You, and/or your children, have spent at least four (or a lot more) weeks of your lives at camp.

Over time, those weeks have been distilled down to memories which tend to focus on “the peaks, the pits and the transitions.” So, no matter how many summers you were at Sanborn, you will recall certain moments--but not others.

In their new book, The Power of Moments, Chip and Dan Heath tease out how our most powerful and lasting memories come from both profound and simple moments that have four elements in common.

For a moment to become meaningful, it must 1) involve a “peak” experience, 2) provide individual insight, 3) evoke a sense of pride or gratitude, and 4) be shared with others. If you consider those elements, it is obvious why you remember--in such detail--the summit of your first Colorado 14er with your camp friends: 1) it is literally a “peak” with aweinspiring views; 2) climbing a mountain requires personal fortitude and chutzpah (especially if you are 11 years old); 3) you are surrounded by people who are suffering and celebrating with you; and 4) it gives you an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment. Even the “pit” moments can become memorable: a terrifying lightning storm that caused the horses to run away becomes an experience that bolsters confidence, pride and community because we not only survived, we had fun doing it.

The Power of Moments isn’t just a “why you remember stuff ” book--it is a call to action for businesses, organizations, educators, families and individuals to intentionally craft and create more memorable, powerful moments in our everyday lives. The book includes a “three-part recipe” to create moments of elevation. If we 1) boost sensory appeal, 2) raise

• the stakes, and 3) break the script, we can create novel, memorable experiences for ourselves and those around us.

If we can “boost sensory appeal” by wearing costumes, playing musical instruments, changing our environment (often by going outside), then we renew our curiosity and awaken our sense of wonder. If we can “raise the stakes”, push ourselves physically or mentally, add healthy competition, or accomplishment deadlines (how much can we do by then vs. we have to do this much by then), we create buy-in and excitement for ourselves and our teams.

The most memorable thing one can do to create a peak moment is to “break the script.” Imagine you start driving your kids to school on a Tuesday...and then end up in the ski hill parking lot. Breaking the script requires planning, effort and coordination--but for any of you who had counselors who woke you up to watch a meteor shower, who (as a surprise) carried a whole watermelon/inflatable alligator/ sparkling cider/stove and hot chocolate to the summit, who asked you to come down early and help the wranglers with chores at the barn, or who cultivated a living unit built on respect, fun and community--you already know the power of script breakers and dream makers. We know that “the world of children is made possible by the world of adults” but, sometimes, those adult-y adults need to mix it up a bit for the amazement and sense of wonder of the other people around us.

In order to craft these moments, it is essential to “beware the soul-sucking force of reasonableness.” What we do at camp (climbing a mountain with 12 ten year olds) is always safe, but rarely “reasonable”. In contrast, a high school principal quoted in the book said, “We run school like it is a non-stop practice. You never get a game”--students rarely experience “peak” moments in school and most of us rarely experience peak moments in our workplaces...yet it is these moments that make life fulfilling, rewarding and aspirational.

Dan Heath gave one of the keynote presentations at the 2018 American Camp Association conference and he admitted he was in a room with a group of people who “already know a lot about creating meaningful moments.”

He acknowledged that “camp people” are really good about building peak moments because we often have the tools and the time to be very thorough and intentional about crafting those moments and traditions. Yet we think EVERYONE can be “camp people”--and the Heath brothers have provided a road map...just don’t forget the skis.

Me and Old Mose

[Author’s note: Old Mose was a grizzly bear hunted and killed by Wharton Pigg and J.W. Anthony in 1904 near Black Mountain which borders Park, Teller, and Fremont Counties (not far from camp). Believed to be one of the last grizzly bears in Colorado, Old Mose was reputed to have killed four men as well as many calves, sheep and other livestock. Local rancher and prospector, Wharton Pigg, hunted Old Mose for many years and was joined in the final hunt by professional hunter J.W. Anthony. Any HTOEC alumni may be familiar with Jim Perkins’s book, Old Mose, which resides in HTOEC’s library. I also examine and critique the hunt for Old Mose as a snapshot of whiteness in America. At this point in the essay, my hunting partner, JEFF KRUEGER (BS Staff 09-10, 12-13; HTOEC 10) (aka: The Kroog), and I have recently discovered the possible death site of Old Mose based on a photograph from his book featuring a local man named Everett Lowry who showed the site to Perkins after finding Pigg’s hunting knife left in a tree some eighty years after the hunt.]

roog look,” I said, pointing to a wobbly aspen tree then to a fallen, decomposing conifer, “this is where they took the picture.”

We had found the place where James Perkins (author of Old Mose) had taken Everett Lowry’s picture. The conifer behind him was still there, more decomposed.

Other smaller conifers at the time of the picture were nearly twice as tall and could now be identified as spruces and firs.

Even the aspen tree with the one dent in it developed other twists and turns as if people had wrung its trunk in their hands.

Old Mose had been chased into this aspen thicket. He had been killed down there and dragged back up, carried through the streets of Canyon City. We were going to find him.

Walking into the aspen thicket, I thought about what Wharton Pigg felt when J.W. Anthony killed Old Mose--when Old Mose had been Pigg’s to kill. On the afternoon of April 30th, 1904, Anthony and his pack of hunting dogs cornered and killed Old Mose with two bullet wounds. Later, a picture with Old Moses’s hide showed J.W. Anthony looking into the camera, touching the bear while Pigg, instead, glared at Anthony. This prolonged stare seemed to burn into Anthony, whose actions determined that the first time Pigg saw “his bear” was when the bear was dead.

At the end of Old Mose, the reader learns that Perkins felt sorry for Old Mose and that he cared for Pigg and Anthony as authors care about the people in their stories.

In the way that no one is only good or bad but both, I found myself, too, lamenting Mose’s death, sad that Pigg did not get the

final kill, frustrated that Anthony was the one to lay Old Mose to rest. The beauty in this is that Pigg and Anthony are like us: obsessed, misguided, sad at the end, but, ultimately, passionate. Not that they were lacking humanization, but they dutifully received it.

Those who suffer at the hands of people in power (other people, first off, animals a distant second) require the same immediate and consistent humanization that white men like Pigg and Anthony have always received. While we have historically received and created this humanization, I find this story to be remarkable because it humanizes Wharton Pigg, someone whom I would have dismissed at first glance.

That humanization of an “other” allowed me to understand that the deeper we travel into the wilderness or the deeper we travel into our own or someone else’s neighborhood the closer we get to something relatable. As Eula Biss concluded in On Immunity: “In the garden of the body, we look inward and find not self, but other” (162). What a treat to discover the similarities between ourselves and authors, hunters, bears, the rich, the poor, and the urban.

The day after Old Mose’s death, after the parade and the skinning and Anthony’s departure, Pigg rode back to the aspen thicket, alone. He blazed three trees labeling one where Old Mose died, one where Anthony fired the final shot, and one as the final credits: “Old Moses’s Last Bed J.W. Anthony and W.H. Pigg, Hunters. Ray, Ring, Ginger and Dummit, pack April 30, 1904” (Perkins 65).

When he left, he would live and hunt for another 26 years, dying on March

15, 1930 from meningitis contracted while trapped in a blizzard during a hunt. After he died, his children learned that it was not him who had killed Old Mose, but Anthony. As Perkins explained, “it was not that Wharton had lied to them about it; he simply could never talk about it” (85) because he had told his truth to his first home and family, to Old Mose’s home, to the place where he found—and where later I would find—relatability to otherness: the forest.

The Kroog and I spent close to an hour looking for one of the trees that Pigg had blazed. It was not long into our hunt, however, when I remembered the lifespan of an aspen tree. We would not find the tree 106 years after it was carved because it was most likely dead. Plus, Pigg likely chose a mature tree that had a broad surface area to carve his message; those messaged

• Later, The Kroog would show me a map of the Pacific Crest Trail that he was preparing to hike. It was my first time examining a map of California and I was amazed at how much could be in one state. When I finished Old Mose, I learned that his hide was at the University of California, Berkeley.

Between this information and The Kroog’s map, I decided that I could not settle until I got to California. I did not know how true this would be: I met my wife in California where we now live.

We briefly lived in Oakland, not far the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) at UC Berkeley.

trees would definitely not be alive. So we started bending over, laying on the ground looking at fallen aspen trees. We looked at nearly every tree. We knew we were in the right aspen grove, but without these trees we could not find the exact spot.

I sat down on a stump, deciding to eat lunch before heading home. As I looked up at the aspen tree in front of me, I found it carved: “Old Mose ’94.” I looked to my left and found a similar carving with a similar year. Turning around, I discovered even more trees; I had sat down in the middle of a circle made of Old Mose commemorations. Remembering that Old Mose was published in 1991, I realized that I was not alone: other people had sought out this spot and realized (or just decided) that this was Old Mose’s death site.

“Kroog! I found it!”

We ate lunch together there in the middle of that circle. The Kroog and I had joined a small group of people who had also paid homage to Old Mose. People who had hiked here like us to find Old Mose, and consciously or not, connect with otherness. I do not know who these people are (surely one was Perkins), but we found beauty in our collective home. We found beauty in a bear mistaken for a villain.

We ate our lunch together surrounded by those initials, a part of the same circle other lives shared.

After a series of emails with the head of the MVZ, I was granted permission to come see Old Mose. The MVZ is not a public museum but one for research students and others in the zoology field hence the permission required.

I left work early one Tuesday in May to meet my wife in Berkeley. I had quipped that since Old Mose had influenced me to move to California, that Old Mose had led me to her. She had to be there when I saw the bear for the first time.

Once inside we were brought through a series of locked doors and elevators. I had to sign a release form agreeing that I would not publish any of the pictures I took without the written consent of UC Berkeley. A true Noah’s Ark of zoology, the room we were led to held pelts, shells, paws, and skins hanging in rows and filed away in shelves. And there, spread on the floor, after my own seven year journey to find him, lay Old Mose. In addition to pictures, I was allowed to measure him, gently lift and pet parts of him. The best way I can think to explain that moment is to provide a sample of my notes that I took during the thirty minutes while my wife and I were with him: Deep brown coat; smells like closets at camp; head feels heavy; laid out flat like he was shot from behind; claws marbled like the aerial view of a terrestrial planet; paws rock solid; haunches have darker fur; incredible chance to inspect a predator so large; “the devil incarnate” seems a placid follower of

time; claws immobile and missing on left hind paw; edentulous, gaping maw; cavernous nasal passage; drapes of hide; fur moves in grassland waves; on the medical tile floor in between rows of animals (the bizarre prestige of being the only thing not hanging); gargantuan compared to all else, not even the background desert tortoise shell, tiger, alligator, or polar bear come nearly as wide: stretching between past and present; note on tag: received from J.W. Anthony’s trust in 1949; fur coarser near the rump; front right paw leaning into a drawer of vulpes vulpes necator (Sierra Nevada red fox) and back left paws outstretching hallway (Mose is 75” at his widest…hallway is 56” wide!); back right haunch is ripped up to what could be vertebrae; front right shoulder has an indexfinger-wide hole that is probably from the fatal shot; stiff, wooden ears.

I put my hand on Old Moses’s forehead, thinking of my time at camp, teaching, and finding his death site with The Kroog.

I thought about meeting my wife. Then I felt responsible for Old Mose. The white people that I have been chosen to be the cultural progeny of have taken without reciprocation.

So here is my repayment: returning, to the best that I can, something that was taken from the mountains of Colorado and, in turn, returning a belief that we are not unmixable.

Just as we know that the juniper berries a bear eats benefit from an aspen tree’s shade, we can now understand that the existence of one group of people can be confluent with the existence of another.

But for this to happen, power and privilege needs to change. People with privilege and power--white people--need to not assume natural ownership of others, accept critique, and work with the oppressed to help them discover their liberation that we have withheld from them. That type of whiteness will then be one of pride.

he following is another in our series of memorable articles from previous editions of the Alum News. “Great Moments in Sanborn Driving History” was originally published as a two-part series in 1990-91. (Don’t worry, Great Moments in Driving History have continued to occur from 1990 to the present day—maybe we’ll write about them in a future Alum News (Once the Statute of Limitations has run out, of course.)

Great Moments in Sanborn Driving History 1820 Ute Indian backs travois into tree by Potts Spring, causing much modern speculation as to why that tree has a scar on it. Scien-

tific researchers name such scars “Culturally scarred trees” and deduce that the Utes damaged the tree bark to get sap for basket waterproofing.

1948 Elmo Hammer drives bulldozer across cesspool near Big Spring house/office and disappears from sight.

1950 Mart Allen, inventing a more efficient way to clear snow from the Big Springpond , attaches a plow blade to the Model A and

sinks through thin ice. Mart escapes but the Model A is not recovered until Spring and has a fishy smell for the remainder of

its days.

1960 Sandy drives the Zorro into Fishcreek and walks home 1967 Jerry McLain drives away from gas tank and hooks hose with bumper causing elevated gas tank to tip over, causing a gasoline

spill still being investigated by the EPA. 1968 Sandy drives the orange VW bug into Fishcreek and walks home.

1969 Jim “Hercules” Roth, Mark Morton, Ned Douglas, Rick and Sandy Sanborn and others set all-time quantity record by getting

seven vehicles (including the Apache 10) stuck in Fishcreek at the same time. Road is diverted forever.

1971 Sandy drives the blue VW into Fishcreek and walks home.

1972 Sue Springer Trummer and Judy Jarrell Pallet leave the Gold Bomb out of gear near the High Trails Crafts building. Gold Bomb

rolls down the hill to the stables, taking out a luggage tent and several aspen trees.

1972 Mark Pallet and Jane Sanborn, while loading up outcamp supplies at the Chalet, come within inches of making the Gold Bomb

the new trophy over the fireplace mantle in Sandy’s office.

1973 Sandy drives the yellow VW bug into Fishcreek and walks home.

1976 “The Thing”, a new volkswagon run about, is purchased for Laura on her birthday by Sandy.

1976 Sandy runs into a tree while driving “The Thing”.

1977 A Big Spring Ridge Leader backs “The Thing” into a tree by the Big Spring Lodge.

1977 Laura pulls the keys on “The Thing”.

1978 Sandy drives Laura’s new Jeep Wagoneer into Fishcreek and walks home.

1979 Jan Sanborn VanWest moves the beams of Gold Hut six inches with top rack of medium Ford bus, also removing the top rack

in the process.

1980 Rick Sanborn drives the yellow VW bug (hand-me-down from Sandy) into Fishcreek and walks home.

1981 Jan Sanborn VanWest drives The Thing into a tree near the dump.

1981 Laura pulls the keys and hides The Thing 1983 Bill Geiger, driving the garbage truck, knocks Torreys II completely off its cinder blocks. Shock waves felt in Buena Vista.

1984 Raft blows off GMC driven by Posey Hedges, temporarily blocking the windshield of Bus 69B travelling behind, eventually is

retrieved from cow pasture near Lake George.

1984 “Plump Penelope” (the bus) has a fatal breakdown on Ute Pass on a Big Spring Town Day. Sandy hurriedly buys another bus in

order to continue the trip. This bus is known fondly and realistically as “The Rust Bucket”.

1985 Laura Sanborn, while “running into” the bank to get cash for a camp trip, removes ladder from the side of the van and knocks

over outside teller machine. Bank refuses to provide lollipops for the 14 girls in the van.

1985 Rick Sanborn drives his Subaru into Fishcreek and walks home.

1986 Barbara Rowley backs The Thing into a tree in the “Subdivision I” parking lot.

1986 Laura removes all four wheels from The Thing.

1989 Rodney Hargrave, dutifully locks all the doors of the van he drove on a camp trip to Breckenridge. Is on the ski lift near the top

when he realizes there is one small problem. The keys are still in the van and it is still running.

1989 Jane Sanborn, while retrieving J.C.s illicitly visiting the Outbackers, backs the van into a tree near Grizzly, stopping the respon

sibility lecture in mid-sentence.

1990 Kent Schulte, after picking up birthday cakes at the HT Bakery in “The Plum”, avoids a head-on with Sandy at the bottom of the

High Trails hill by running over several small and one large aspen. Birthday cakes and aspen are totaled. The Plum, returned to

Leo’s in pieces, emerges after several weeks as a cherry red pickup.

1990 T. J. Johnson, using Heisler Hall in lieu of brakes on small Ford bus, removes southwest corner of building. Sandy decides to put

major addition on Heisler rather than repair the corner.

1990 Rick Sanborn drives hay truck into Fishcreek. Gets it out with new winch truck which promises to revolutionize Sanborn

driving history.
