2021 Annual Report Colorado Outdoor Education Center
Western Camps

Dear Alums, Parents, Campers and Friends,

Greetings! Since camp ended last summer the most common question we have been asked is “What was different because of COVID?” You will be pleased to know the answer is “not much.” The amount of work that went into opening was amazing, but that work was behind the scenes as we prepared for “normal” days at camp. Our staff had contingency plans for their contingency plans; the effort was staggering. We had no positive cases and our summer staff demonstrated a level of commitment to keeping everyone safe that deserves recognition. A number of lessons were learned including more efficient ways to deliver healthcare that will carry on to future summers. It is important to recognize that our senior staff led efforts statewide (and, as usual, were a national resource) to create a safe environment for operating camps. They partnered with state and local officials to ensure we were ready to open and able to stay open.

Obviously, there were practical accommodations to the pandemic including testing, changes to drop-off procedures and initial cohorting. However, the most important message is that camp was camp. 14ers were summitted on chilly mountain mornings. Tubes floated down the river. And, horses carried riders through mountain meadows and pine forests. The special experience of camp, learning to live together in the outdoors, was more alive than ever. Connections were made and friendships renewed.

Importantly, we had high enrollment from many returning families as well as a significant number of first-time campers. These things were a strong affirmation that our mission remains critical for young people. Camp is an experience that parents value highly, especially after the isolation created by the pandemic.

Now we look forward to 2022! Many age groups have been filled since fall and we are taking lessons learned from last year as we prepare for the summer. A new, and much needed, health center is under construction at Big Spring and a new high ropes course

will be built by summer. The staff is being hired and hours of effort are going into making sure our program is the best.

Our middle and elementary school partners have reaffirmed their commitment to our outdoor education programs, which enjoyed a great fall season. Preparation for spring HTOEC programs is in high gear.

The Nature Place, our conference and retreat center, continues its rebound as travel and meetings come back. Many businesses and groups are excited to use our wonderful facility for team building, leadership and educational programs.

Financially, COEC remains in a strong position. Thanks to very prudent expense management by our leadership team and the efforts of our Board Finance Committee, we are exiting the pandemic in a strong position and remain debt free. The generosity of our donors was critical to our ability to emerge from the pandemic with this strong financial foundation - THANK YOU. Giving has become a critical pathway to renewing our infrastructure and expanding our scholarship programs.

Again, I want to thank our senior leadership team for their efforts over the last 24 months. Maintaining COEC’s strong foundation took a tremendous effort with lots of twists and turns and this team proved that they are agile, flexible and innovative. Finally, on behalf of my fellow trustees, I want to thank each of you, the members of our camp community; your support (in too many forms to list) and belief in what COEC does has sustained all of us in these challenging times,

And, now, it is on to summer 2022!

Regards

RELEVANCE

RELEVANCE RESULTSRESONANCE reflections on our mission...

It is time, once again, to look back on the past year and celebrate the successes, acknowledge the challenges and extend our gratitude for your support. Beyond the standard operational office communications, a consistent theme in our conversations and reflections has been about our original mission: To live together in the outdoors building a sense of self, a sense of community, a sense of the earth and a sense of wonder through fun and adventure. This mission that Sandy and Laura created in 1948 continues to demonstrate its importance and its continuing relevance with each passing year.

Our mission remains powerfully relevant because it is grounded foundationally in the human experience. We are grateful to have been entrusted with a mission that guides us and drives our organization forward. It is, as one staff member said, “A mission worth remembering and sharing.” After the past two years of isolation and distancing, many children (and adults) have felt a decrease in their sense of self and purpose, a lack of belonging to communities, an inability to let the mind wander and wonder past the necessary day-to-day, and they have had to dig deep and look hard to find the fun that used to be woven into their lives. Fortunately, at COEC, those experiences are just beyond the Aspen grove by the front gate.

As we move towards normalcy, with our mission being more important than ever,

we continue to find reasons to be passionate about what we do. Our mission resonates with our staff, with our campers, with our alums and, ultimately, results in making the world a better place. We have the opportunity to help people remember what normal is, to pull on the foundational threads of the human experience and to take time to tie those threads together. We get to build competence and confidence in people that helps cultivate a strong sense of self. We love connecting people and teaching the skills needed to be a contributing, valued member of a community. We are here to keep introducing and exploring the natural world with others, sparking a sense of awe and wonder that gives us a greater perspective of our place in the universe and develops future stewardship of the Earth. And where better to rediscover a sense of fun and adventure than around a fire, on the trail, or camping under the stars.

There are times when we can immediately see the result of spending a summer at Sanborn, time at The Nature Place, or a week as a student at High Trails, through high-fives, hugs, in-depth conversations and expressions of gratitude for the experience. Yet, not all the results are immediately seen. Sometimes they are experienced, internalized and later resurface as people move through the world. They are embodied and carried forward when our campers, staff members, clients, guests, and students become educators, mentors,

sustainable architects, community advocates, and naturalists. This is how Sandy and Laura hoped to make the world a better place: by helping to create better people who could care about others, the world and maintain a childlike sense of wonder and awe in spite of challenge and difficulty.

Through the generosity of our alums and camp families, it is clear how much each of you value this experience. Whether you have painted buildings and moved logs during one of our Alum work days; or have hosted or attended a virtual camp movie show; or have consistently donated to the Annual Fund or to a Capital Campaign; or have introduced your neighbors to camp and your colleagues to The Nature Place; or have liked a costume-heavy photo on one of our social media sites–we can tell that you care and that you have been impacted by the mission. What we do at COEC is within each of us: a sense of self, community, earth and wonder. How fortunate we are to be a part of something with such deep roots and so essential for our future. Thank you for believing in what we do.

Sincerely,

J

ust thank you. We had so much fun hearing all the experiences and memories he created at Sanborn during our 2+ hour ride home. He has never talked that much, like ever! He had such an amazing time. He even referenced his tough times as a source of pride because of how resilient he was to get through them. All the triumphs and challenges he had experienced made him feel better about himself and the world around him. We couldn’t ask for anything more from his time at Sanborn.

SANBORN WESTERN CAMPS

“To live together in the outdoors building a Sense of Self, a Sense of Community, a Sense of the Earth, and a Sense of Wonder through fun and adventure.”

-Sanborn Western Camps Mission Statement-

I have three very different children but they all seemed to get what they needed out of camp. Whether it was connecting with old friends, making new ones or experiencing camp for the first time, it was so valuable. Especially this year. Not only did the kids need to be kids and forget (as much as possible) about the COVID chaos, but we parents needed a break as well. My kids got to do so many things with friends and the best counselors that they can’t here at home. Sanborn is not just a 2 week or month long experience. They reminisce about camp all year long and look forward to their next summer at camp.

-2021, Camp Parent-

My daughters had an amazing summer this year--they came back more confident and more independent. In their first days starting high school and middle school, they are more outgoing in their approach to making new friends.

A Message from Our Director of Development

• Forty-seven campers attended camp in 2021 with tuition aid from Sanborn Scholarship Funds.

• Forty-nine campers will attend camp in 2022 with scholarships.

• Fifty students attended High Trails Outdoor Education Center last fall with full scholarships provided by the Sanborn Scholarship Fund.

• In 2022, more than 100 students will attend HTOEC with full scholarships in our spring and fall programs.

• We provided Outdoor Afro with prorated programming at The Nature Place.

• We provide significant discounts to local students from Guffey, Lake George, and Cripple Creek so that they can experience an HTOEC program.

• We created and conducted a Leadership Day training for high school students who served as counselors in the HTOEC fall programs.

• We have begun construction on a new state-of-the-art Health Center at Big Spring which will have an incredibly positive impact on the health care we can provide for campers and staff.

• When our ropes course inspection revealed that it was time for a new course, we could immediately start the process and will have it completed by this summer.

• We are taking advantage of a 60-40% grant to work with the Coalition for the Upper South Platte to complete a 15-acre forest mitigation project which will help protect our facilities from wildfire.

• We have two new vehicles, donated by alums, in our fleet.

Things are moving fast in the world of camping, as they are in other parts of society. Although we are able to pay our operational costs each year with the revenues from our programs, we often rely on donated funds to innovate, improve our facilities, preserve our land and expand the reach of our programs. We are incredibly grateful for the help of our alums and camp friends who support our mission.

Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you!

2021 FINANCIAL OVERVIEW: COLORADO OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTER

Colorado Outdoor Education Center’s programs are thriving despite the significant impact of the pandemic and the financial losses incurred in 2020. Two PPP loans and the generosity of our alums allowed us to maintain a quality program and cover expenses in 2020-2021. The majority of our operational costs in 2021 were covered by program tuition and other income.

Donations support scholarships for the camps and for High Trails Outdoor Education Center. Charitable gifts also support major renovations to aging facilities and purchases which have a significant impact on the quality and the long term sustainability of our programs.

2021Charitable

Due to COVID uncertainty, with the exception of scholarships, we did not commit donated funds to capital projects until the end of 2021.
